One thing to keep in mind about drinking during this era; when men came home from World War II they had PTSD just like every other generation. Unfortunately they weren't allowed to address it. The war is over! Let's move on and enjoy our lives! They weren't allowed to acknowledge they were traumatized by war which is why they drank as much as they did. As Roger said about his generation and drinking, "We drink because we deserve it"
