  • What do you have to say for yourself? Glen, look at me. That was very bad. You know better than to walk in on someone like that. That room is private, extremely private. Well, that's all I'm trying to say. Now look at me. Don't you think you owe me an apology? Well?
    I'm sorry.
Well, good. That's not the way to behave, okay? Now... It's all right. I'm not angry anymore.
    You're pretty.
    Well, thank you, dear.
    Really pretty.
That's sweet of you to say.
    How old are you?
Well, I'm the same age as your mother. How old is your mother?
    She's 32.
    I'm 28.
Your hair is so beautiful. You look like a princess.
Well, I don't know about that.
    Can I have some?
    What?
Can I have some of your hair?
    Glen, no.
    Just a little piece?
    Glen.
    You won't even miss it.
Now off to bed with you. And no radio.
Because the babysitter had canceled, Helen begs Betty to keep an eye on her son, Glen, while she heads to the Kennedy headquarters. Compared to the Draper residence, Helen's house is a mess. Glen is practicing the piano when Betty arrives. Betty has Glen watch TV, while she heads off to the bathroom. Inside, she cannot resist to explore and she finds birth control pills in the drawer. As soon as she sits down on the toilet she is interrupted by Glen. Betty is shocked when he deliberately walks in. Glen stands at the doorway and watches her on the toilet, like a little pervert. She yells at him, and closes the door. He is upset and cries and apologizes. She accepts his apology. Later, he asks her for a piece of her hair, which she cuts off a small lock and gives it to him.One of the most bizarre moments is the show.
It says a lot about Betty’s character and her emotional maturity level that she relates so well to Glen, who is far younger than her. She was so alone, so unhappy that the only person she could turn to for comfort was a child. She had no one else. And at that point, with her mother's death, her childhood, her current life, Don's infidelity, her own mental state was pretty child like. That car scene when she tells him "I'm so sad" is one of the most effective and moving scenes of the show, reflecting Betty’s deep loneliness, suburban isolation and perpetual state of arrested development.
Betty has a very strange infatuation with Glen, despite the fact he is a child, which leads him to fall in love with her and do everything possible to be with her one day. It starts off incredibly strange with Betty cutting some of her hair off for him, and it doesn't get any less weird anytime they interact. This is most obvious in the final episode when he reveals he is heading to war, and the two have some very close, and very awkward encounters.
Elizabeth "Betty" Draper is a fictional character on AMC drama television series Mad Men. She is wife (and later ex-wife) of main character Don Draper and mother of his three children. Blonde and beautiful but emotionally distant and immature, she spends the bulk of the series slowly growing as a person amid the social and political turmoil of the 1960s. Her character's appearance is often compared to that of Grace Kelly, with the similarities between the two also drawn during the first season of the series.
Helen Bishop was the single mother of two children. In 1960 she had a son Glen who was about 9 years old, and another child who was a baby. At that time she recently moved into a house in the same neighborhood in Ossining as the Draper family, having recently become divorced after her husband's infidelity. She worked in a jewelry store and volunteered for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Helen's status as a divorcee and her habit of taking long walks alone garnered criticism and suspicion from women in the neighborhood. At least one of the married men in the neighborhood made a pass at the recently single Helen.
Initially, Betty Draper was scornful of Helen, looking down on her for her divorced status, but she acted outwardly friendly towards her and helped her out by babysitting. A permanent rift developed between Helen and Bettty when Helen found out that Betty had given Helen's son Glen a lock of hair while babysitting him one evening. When Helen confronted Betty at the grocery store, Betty slapped her in the face. Helen’s ex-husband worked in the insurance industry.By several years later, Helen had gotten remarried and her son Glen expressed dissatisfaction with how he was treated by his newly remarried mother and her new husband. Soon afterwards, Glen was sent to boarding school.
