  • Quality teachers are the hallmark of an education system. How do teachers in Finland address the diverse learning needs of children in a classroom? What are the challenges they face?
The Lien Foundation took two Singapore educators - Dr Jacqueline Chung, Academic Director at St James’ Church Kindergarten and Ms Tan Sze Wee, Executive Director at Rainbow Centre which runs three special education schools - to find out what Singapore can learn from them.

wow 👏👏 "the teachers are not only performers, but researchers. so they can reflect on what they're doing and develop their own work" bravo!! that's how it SHOULD be!! i remember thinking in high school that a couple teachers hadn't updated their teaching methods at all IN 30 YEARS! which is appalling!

Oftentimes, I would hear teacher refer to other teachers in the same school where he or she teaches as co-teacher, which means readily as a teacher who teaches in the same school. This Episode has introduced me to another concept of co-teaching as partnership in handling classes, in preparing class instructions, in discussing relevant concerns in classroom management, in building consensus for learning and in many other things. What seems new to me is the presence of special educator partnered with a regular teacher: the latter being the head teacher in the class handling the whole class instructions, while the special educator handles smaller groups and even going individually for the concerns of the learners. This partnership or collaboration is something that teachers in the Philippines may look into to strengthen, not just partnership in teaching, but sensitize learning based on the special needs of learners. The Philippine education system may consider training all teachers to be special educators not just for learners with special needs but for all learners. This may carry big implications on curriculum management, on economic or financial aspect due to special trainings that teachers should undergo. It excites me to say that teachers must all be oriented if not skilled special educators. That ALL TEACHERS ARE SPECIAL EDUCATORS.

In Finland the students are blessed. They are never urdenized and thay totally have the right to be whatever they want to be in the future. In Pakistan the educational system is the exact opposite of Finland. As soon as a student gets into their HS he or she has to attend lectures upto 11 hours everyday.Thats only the total time of lectures. You have to self study for the tests and the homework other than that.I am a sophomore student in Pakistan and I have gone through a year of this hectic routine.I can clearly see all my creativity and love for arts has simply vanished since I am given no time for them. There is much much to rant about but it doesn't matter to anyone.

How big is this school? Total number of students in the school and the number of students per class. Most importantly what is the student teacher ratio?
    Thankyou in advance

Hey! I am a special educator student on my last year in Eastern University of Finland. Usually one teacher has 20-25 students but it depends on the age group. There are also schools which practice more inclusive schools where this kind of co-teaching is done with two primary educators and one special educator so then they can 40-44 students in class. The classroom is open but there are ways to make smaller spaces. If you are interested on that I recommend to check Eastern University of Finland - Rantakylän Normaalikoulu 😌 Hope this helps!

30 out of 1000, it' means you invest in 1000 ppl to get only 30. Waste of money then. What the point if you give high standard education to your child and at the end they can get a job

My son is mixed race when I came here from US the teachers asked me to have my son in special education. Because he was not fitting in...yep we had been here from US for two weeks so of course he wasn't fitting in. And it was a racist decision as they did not know where or why we were here. So racism is a big issue here. I refused and of course it was an English school and my kids soon settled down. and if I had not pushed back he would have been misdiagnosed especially due to his mixed race status. Not all Roses. As for all teachers having a masters degree it was only recently when Finland had to go in line with EU so until only recently Finland did not have bachelors degrees. Only Polytechnic diplomas or Masters degrees no in between.
