- In Matthew 22, the Pharisees attempt to trip Jesus up again with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Attempting to trap Jesus with a question that has problematic consequences no matter how he answered it if he would have answered it directly, Jesus tells the Pharisees and other listeners to render unto Caesar that which belongs to Caesar and to God that which belongs to God.

@@Dannyboy0202 Yeah their cult has some real whoppers as you will discover. I must admit I didn't know a big lot about them; especially how flaky they are; until Tony hinted at their weirdness then I went on a voyage of discovery:
1) They think Jesus and St. Michael the ArchAngel are the same being!!!!
2) They believe Ellen White's messages (her book the Great Controversy) are on par with scripture.
3) They believe in 'soul sleep'.
4) The Investigative Judgement; which believes Jesus is currently judging all souls alive or dead right now. It is possible you are being judged right now and your fate set even before your life is over.
5) It will be Satan and not Jesus who will bear our sins (probably in line with many of their satanic beliefs)
6) The reason for the commandments and Jesus incarnating was so God could be judged by the commandments and prove Himself before the rest of creation (as if God needs our approval).
7) They only believe in Sabbath Keeping because Ellen had a false or demon-induced vision where she saw the commandments in the Holy of Holy's and the one about the Sabbath had some sort of Halo above it. So they now keep her version (not the biblical one) of Sabbath Keeping.
8) Their sect thinks abortion is morally acceptable and advises their members as such. There are restrictions but it is still outright child sacrifice (which in the bible was to the demon Moloch).
9) They don't believe in an eternal hell; instead they believe Ellen's word over the bible and say that souls will cease to exist (be annihilated) rather than what the bible teaches and say the damned will spend an eternity in Hell.
I am sure to find out even much more as I go through their twisted beliefs. Between his childish poor understanding of Catholicism and now this junk; no wonder Tony is so screwed up in the head. I somehow pity the poor guy but he has only himself to blame now.

You got it pretty much spot on, I think you missed why the Pharisees and Scribes marveled. In essence, Jesus told them this, but in fact, he knew that the learned Pharisees and Scribes would intuitively understand that "ALL WAS Gods" and nothing is Ceasars. In other words, he gave them an answer they couldn't entrap him with, but also an answer that basically stated, all is God's, and you very well now this to be true.

Never looked at it that way, I couldn’t grasp the part of give God what belongs to God before.
I heard protestants use that part to explain the giving of 10 percent of their salaries but that never sat well with me for some reason.

I think this is the most important verse to bear in mind when engaging in politics. If democracy is the new caesar then voting is giving it its due, but we should remain detached from identifying ourselves by political party because we serve God first.

Dr. Pitre, thanks for the invaluable insight. Please make a video on Papal Infallibility. There are a lot of cults these days pulling Catholics away from the faith by stating that the Infallibility of the pope is blasphemous(I'm not sure if this is false either, considering the shocking events of the pagan goddess pachamama worship by pope Francis). Apostasy is on the rise. I'm positive you'll clear a lot of these doubts. Thank you.

What great context! To add in a way, by saying 'Render unto Caesar what is caesars, and to God what is God's," he is saying "Caesar may claim himself a god, but Caesar is not God."

This is exactly what Saint Augustine said : Caeser wants his image ( coins and taxes ) And God who created us on his own image, and that image which was disfigured by original sin, also God wants His image back from us. Now our Lord Jesus Christ is the perfect image of God ( Colossians 1:15-17 ). What does all this mean someone might ask? Well, if we want to become again an image of God, we need to be born again from above and become adopted sons of God in the only begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ. And the more Jesus increases in us and the more we decrease ( John 3:30 ) , the more we turn back into the image of God that God created us to be. But we cannot do that on our own: For without Him there is nothing we can do ( John 15:5 ), but we can do all things through Christ who strenghtens us ( Philippians 4:13 ). Again, this is why, for us Christians, grace comes always first...
This reminds me of Saint John of Damascus's quote, "The whole earth is an icon of God."

This is a great verse, and an okay teaching.
The audience should be aware that the same culture that deified the Caesars declared that Jesus was divine at birth over 300 years after crucifying him. Prior to that it was a topic of debate, after that such debates became heresy and punishable by death. Declaring (after the fact) Jesus was the “one and only son” keeps him on a pedestal where he can only be accessed by the religious institutional elite (modern day Pharisees).

When a new reader, reads the bible new testament, Jesus' words are often printed in red so you know when he's speaking. I'll never forget the first time I saw this verse in read his words printed in the book. There's always a few that hit harder than others. Or ones you don't forget. This is one of them for me becausr it presents a human flaw. Some type of human conundrum? It's almost like the end all be all answer for politics. And it always withstands the test of time

The meaning I take from this is simple because Jesus call them hypocrites. They carry coins with the likeness of Caesar and the inscription that says Tiberivs Caesar Divi Avgvsti Filivs Avgvstvs , meaning Caesar Augustus Tiberius, son of the Divine Augustus. The Pharisees were literary carrying an image of an idol calling himself Son of God yet they question Jesus if they should render said coin to the man who's icon is on said coin. They enjoy the money and privileges that the image of Caesar gives yet they want to question Jesus if they should give that coin back.

It is lawful to give Gaius his penny, so the infrastructure can be built and kept in good condition. Clean water, plumbing, heated floors, solid buildings and roads still instact. That's a penny less for the "enemies of God and all mankind" to steal and do harm with.
God ordered forms of tax and graven images. A tenth of production went to support the widows, orphans, sickly, and the serving priests.
That is what was purported reasonable and they misused the funds for which they were responsible. They used this "i'm poor," excuse to ship the nations' coinage to the enemies of hosting nations. They gave nothing for using the nation's infrastructure.
The Catholic Ecclesia provided for everything with a tenth of a tenth. This was at a time when their hospitals were palatial, impeccably clean, and they actually cured people. The schools were merit based, often free of charge, and sometimes palatial gifts of the Catholic nobility. The way of the Christian Ecclesia is Heaven sent.
Why do we say Ordinary Time? Didn’t we call it other things before?

You hit the core message, in the Greco Roman world, man could become god. First it was familial with the Julio Claudian dynasty. Then with Vespasian it became the transition to when the common man ascended to become a divine emperor. In Judaism, man was created in the image of God and walked with God in the Garden of Eden. The Jews were walking with God in Christ Jesus and yet were blinded by the Roman counterfeit displayed on a denarius. Jesus showed them they were in violation of the First Commandment with their idolatry when they planned malice toward God while walking with Him.
They were on the Temple grounds and were not allowed to carry the currency of Rome on their person, the Denarius, as it would defile the Temple which is why Jesus calls them Hypocrites.
They should have produced a Shekel which was the currency acceptable to have on you in the Temple area but Jesus knew they were hypocrites who made up rules to make money out of the poor by having to exchange Denarii for their Temple currency, the Shekel at a fee.
If they did give Jesus a Shekel, His analogy would not have worked but he knew their hearts, they honour GOD with their lips but their hearts are far from Him, as Isaiah predicted.

Great as always, but can we please put to rest the imported and novel idea that in Exodus God commanded no graven images of any kind? This is false. He only condemned them in the context of idol worship. Not imagery or icons or coins. A picture of Benjamin Franklin is not idolatry. Nor is a picture of the Caesar.
Christians over complicate the text, use the coin pay the tax.
Dr Pitre is obviously brilliant, but I'm not sure that Our Lord actually answers (even shrewdly and/or obliquely) the original question.
His answer about rendering to Caesar's what is Caesar's and God what is God's is only intelligible through this lense: EVERYTHING is God's.
Pitre is right that Our Lord alludes to Gen1, but think it through: if your whole self is God's (for you are in Imago Dei), then your possessions are included as well.
The denarius, kept on the person of the Herodian who produced it, is a blasphemy - a blasphemy *in the Temple of Jehova* - and given the coin's value, a blasphemy that evinces the owner sold out.
Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Figure out for yourself what is Caesar's, you collaborator. Throw back at him your ill-gotten blasphemous gain, and your social status, and your corruption. The gods of the Gentiles are idols. Return to the idol what is the idol's and touch not the unclean thing again. Then, now set free for freedom, give everything to God.
God may own a man, and yet he is free. Not so with Caesar. Not so with Mammon. Not so with the Demos. Only with the Father.

How can a man be BORN-AGAIN?

What is repentance?
👉 REPENTANCE! Everyone born into this world is a Born-sinner. Human nature is a sinful nature. Sin in us has defiled us and has separated us from the Holy God!
We have to repent for all the unholy, lawless transgressions of God’s commandments done willfully or unknowingly, in order to obtain mercy and grace so that we might not be judged and fall into condemnation, the condemnation of eternal hell.

What is confession of sins?
👉 CONFESSION! The guilt of sin and it’s condemnation is rolled away if one truly regrets his sinful past and confesses them in the presence of Jesus Christ.

You have to be Jewish in order to understand what Jesus meant. Jesus said the the tax shouldn't be paid. Why ? Because now we have to ask the question what belongs to God and what belongs to Caesar ? The answer is simply this; everything belongs to God and God gave that land to the Children of Israel as an inheritance forever. The Roman Empire fell but Israel was reborn.
