Possibly the most touching thing about Sgt York was when he returned from the war and they held a big parade for him in New York City. In his charming naivete he assumed they had such a parade for all vets...
This is my father's favorite film, after my mother ran off on him he had to deal with me as a rowdy young buck. I still come back to this film and think about honor, integrity, religious convictions....basically what is right and what is wrong.something people in this country dont seem to grasp.
These days, too many people just get handed too much on a plate, without either having had to work for it, or care about having any of those virtues, of which you wrote.
@Harikus Hacksaw Ridge. The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss , who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.
I’m 42 and this is way ahead of my time but wow these old movies are phenomenal, I just finished it’s a wonderful life ! And when I was younger I always hated movies like this. And now I love them.
These scenes touch me deeply. In my 20s I was something of a conscientious objector -- which hurt my bird-colonel father something fierce. The poor man had to humble himself before the Adjutant General of the State of Tennessee to get me an honorable discharge from the Air National Guard. (As a hippie in California I actually [stupidly] threw away some family firearms into a canal.) I didn't get my head straight on the subject until after I was born again at age 36. Thank God Dad and I were reconciled well before his passing. Reading the Word without the Holy Spirit can be dangerous!
@Real Thailand Jesus Himself said the Way to Life is narrow and few find it. That Way is not a religion but a living Person, the Creator of all. He has a clever enemy who invents religions that appeal to human pride. When I was lost I thought the devil was a myth. I dare you to read the Book that bears the signature of God in a thousand ways.
@Real Thailand Jesus also said unless a person is "born from above" he or she cannot SEE the kingdom of God. So we are all born (the first time) spiritually blind.
I'm from Oneida TN and I knew Alvins Son. Alvin sent the movie back to Hollywood until it was as it happened and no lies were in it. They gave in and could not afford to spend anymore on it and thought the truth would fail. But Academy Awards followed.
People who understood the threat to freedom back then wouldn’t recognize today’s govt. or nation. We take so much for granted with so many people who’d have zero spine to defend their freedoms today. Thank god for those earlier generations willing to stand up to the tyranny so many seem to embrace today.
After watching this and thinking back on the Oscars this year, it's really sad to think that the Hollywood that once was, will never be again and may even disappear completely.
There were perverts, drug addicts, and communists in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s. They just weren't allowed to use the film industry to push their agendas. These days, anyone who is straight or Christian has a target on their back in Hollywood.
I saw this about 40 years ago IIRC. I was very different then, and serving the in the British Paras, ergo aggressive, but even then I was utterly impressed by Gary Cooper's brilliant and sensitive portrayal of an uneducated man struggling to make sense of his conscientious objection. I can't remember the end of this film, but it's getting late and this will have to wait until tomorrow, but it's a wonderfully feel-good film to sleep upon, no matter how it ends, it's uplifting that someone struggles so deeply to follow his own conscience, and that his CO doesn't berate him for doing so. Good night all, may we all awaken to a more peaceful tomorrow 🙂
This is one of the greatest movies ever made with a simple message. I love this movie and this scene, it inspired me to join the service and serve our country. Thank you for sharing.
I get all choked up when i see that scene. Especially when the major says. " that's your heritage and mine too and every American. But sometimes the cost of that freedom is high sometimes it cost everything we have even our lives " God Dam. My eyes water up. : ) i first saw this movie as a lil boy at my Grandpas on reel 8mm. garyd044 You like this movie about an American hero and a devout Christian, yet your profile picture seems to glorify Lenin and the Soviet Union? Do you see the irony in this?
The only film maker making movies close to this today is Mel Gibson. No irony. No sarcasm. Just love of storytelling of a pure hearted protagonist. Beautiful movie.
Gary Cooper was one of my favorite actors growing up on old sitcom and movie reruns , amongst Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson , Chuck Connors and Clint Walker.

I saw this movie with my dad when I was a kid. Used to go to York theater at Fort Bragg. Camp Gordon I was there took basic and Camo training it's an honor just to know who he is.
9:089:11 I truely wish i could be been more like Alvin. He was a simple man and his faith unbending. Still working on it. RIP Cousin Alvin. I'm sure your in Gods loving hands. I stop by his grave every time head home. I was at his funeral.
This is such a beautiful portrayal of a simple man with little former education from the sticks with principals. Sergeant York was no coward and wanted to stick to what was right in his heart. So many Scotch-Irish that were from those kinds of environments back then were such good people that looked out for others and wanted to love, be decent, and do what was right. Now you have these trashy Jerry Springer types. Notice he can read?
Lots of backwoods folks learned to read with the King James Bible for a primer. Many back-country families would sacrifice everything they had for a Bible of their own, and use it to teach their children in the English language. You can see that archaic turn of phrase from the KJV turn up in American writings as late as the early 20th century as a result. As a result of the back country love of the Bible, literacy in early Americana was actually pretty solid, with most villages achieving a literacy rate of somewhere between 50 and 75%, which in an agrarian era was pretty solid. That and the proliferation of public libraries in the late 18th early 19th centuries (and a large assist from the Catholic Church of course) actually allowed America to stay pretty close to the forefront of education through the Agrarian and Industrial eras
@@alekzander2010 The name "York" indicates at least one English male ancestor. However, the prevailing culture in that part of the country was Scots-Irish. When other Americans moved into that region, there was still a strong tendency to be assimilated into the prevailing local culture. Also, the Scots-Irish were a unique people, neither true Scottish nor true Irish. The Scots-Irish were lowland Scots who were relocated into Northern Ireland to help establish a stronger British claim to Northern Ireland. The Scots-Irish were mostly Presbyterians who had differences with both the English Anglicans and the Irish Roman Catholics. More than a few English people who rejected the established Church of England also moved to Northern Ireland. Check out the miniseries "The Story of English", especially episode 4, here on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/Lbr148pL21o/видео.html
I can watch this movie all day long. I live not far from Sgt York lived. My in-laws are from the county he lived in. York was a great American Hero. That’s a fact. He came from the hills of TN like me.
This is a film we should be showing our children and especially our grandchildren. And we should be with them whilst they watch it. I may not go back as far as the events of this film but it's so important for our young people to appreciate that what they have today was worked and fought for. Now that we are afflicted by a world wide pandemic where things could possibly get a lot worse, they must be prepared for a time when what they have taken so for granted can no longer be obtained and the ease with which they could once have what they needed or wanted now has to be worked and, if necessary fought for. This film also teaches that soldiers are people and citizens, not robots or cannon fodder to be expended at the whim of ambitious despots.
I saw the old Sgt. York movie maybe for the first time. Whether or not every detail is factual, it is an inspiring and worthy watch, depicting common decency, respect, Biblical morality and ethics, and simple and humble patriotism! All of which is polar opposite attitude of the current culture. Too bad this is not still championed as the *right way*. Look at our crumbling society.
I was just noticing that York is wearing the canvas gaiters which were worn in the US only. When the troops went overseas they wore puttees. The more I keep seeing this film the more I am impressed with their attempt to "get it right", with some deliberate "realism concessions". The three best known are York's use of the 03 Springfield rather than the m1917 "enfield" he was issued, his use of a Luger in the combat scene (he actually used a Colt 1911 .45), and the lack of light ground snow.
This should be required viewing in every high school and for every person about to enter the armed forces! All Americans, in whatever form, need to fight for what makes this the greatest country ever created. God bless America!
Here's George Clooney from my neck of the woods northern Kentucky in response to Trump and you idiots who call him Hollywood elite:. Clooney said, “Here’s the thing: I grew up in Kentucky. I sold insurance door-to-door. I sold ladies’ shoes. I worked at an all-night liquor store. I would buy suits that were too big and too long and cut the bottom of the pants off to make ties so I’d have a tie to go on job interviews. I grew up understanding what it was like to not have health insurance for eight years. So this idea that I’m somehow the ‘Hollywood elite’ and this guy who takes a shit in a gold toilet is somehow the man of the people is laughable. “People in Hollywood, for the most part, are people from the Midwest who moved to Hollywood to have a career. So this idea of ‘coastal elites’ living in a bubble is ridiculous. Who lives in a bigger bubble? He lives in a gold tower and has 12 people in his company. He doesn’t run a corporation of hundreds of thousands of people he employs and takes care of. He ran a company of twelve people! When you direct a film you have seven different unions all wanting different things, you have to find consensus with all of them, and you have to get them moving in the same direction. He’s never had to do any of that kind of stuff. I just look at it and I laugh when I see him say ‘Hollywood elite.’ Hollywood elite? I don’t have a star on Hollywood Boulevard, Donald Trump has a star on Hollywood Boulevard! F-k you!”

I’m a with you with one little exception. This country is worth fighting for and if need be, making those other poor bastards die for testing our resolve.
Alvin York is one of the few I have been able to look up to. With his isolated upbringing and necessary labors, he was able to understand what our nation is and what is required to keep it. The freedoms and rights we hold have been so eroded over the generations. Our government, schools, and most all of the other institutions have become corrupted by greed and graft. Having a strong sense of duty to god nation and self are now generally held in low regard or even with open hostility by fellow countrymen. So sad. I don't reckon it will be long before its all gone and replaced by its opposite. May God have mercy on us all.
Don't weep stand fast and be heard.Give freedom it's due with whatever strength you have. Your country ,depends on those just like you. You will prevail. God is with you
And add to the emotional thoughts that are going through Alvin Yorke's head play by Gary Cooper, it's Really cool to watch as dog follow him up to the ledge and LAY Down and as soon as Gary Cooper gets up the dog gets up and it's Really a great piece of cinematic history.
Sergeant York is supposed to be in my family tree; a third cousin or something. I knew he was a known war hero. No one talks about him today or when I was growing up, so I didn't understand that he was such a huge deal. I had no idea there was a movie about him. Wow.
It is the heritage of all free men to defend the rights and lives of the down trodden and the enslaved. Being an American means that freedom is our heritage, sometimes at a high cost...sometimes at the ultimate price. It means that our nation was raised up by the the lord God to be a shining light and a beacon for all free men to emulate. God bless the United States and its people.

that moment on the hilltop when the bible hit that passage was the turning point in my life when struggling within in regard to entry into service and the taking of life in combat. but i also did research on alvins reluctance to have any movie made about his life, seems he had 2 demands, 1. that cooper played his part, and 2. that no hollywood B.S. , "stick to the exact facts of his story". i know it sounds corny but its the truth, and i sometimes wonder how many other men of faith had the same experience.

Also during WW2 my Dad was Army his brother was Navy, Sunk by a U-boat in the Greenland Sea in early 42 while Naval Armed Guard on a Liberty ship. He survived, lost toes to frostbite. Was picked up by British Navy ship. 3 firs cousins. 2 cousins of that maternal Uncle served, 1 Navy, 1 Army in the early 70s. I was USAF. Active, reserve, and 73-78 & 83'86. I was R&D and coms. Never fired a weapon except a .38 revolver during ROTC field training..well and my personal shotguns plus borrowed .22 rifles.
Roger that!! You wrote powerful words. Heartfelt. Thank you.
Why just Christian men and women? Ponder that when you comment about the good old days.
Beautifully stated .
Still my favorite movie! When ever i am asked, sadly i have to explain that it is an older movie that most have not seen.
Possibly the most touching thing about Sgt York was when he returned from the war and they held a big parade for him in New York City. In his charming naivete he assumed they had such a parade for all vets...
How different this world would be if we all yearned for righteousness like Alvin York did.
If more men were like Alvin York.
The powers of hell would be shaken forever. Satan himself would have no power over the hearts of men.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund burke
So true
Amen
This is my father's favorite film, after my mother ran off on him he had to deal with me as a rowdy young buck. I still come back to this film and think about honor, integrity, religious convictions....basically what is right and what is wrong.something people in this country dont seem to grasp.
Blessings to you
These days, too many people just get handed too much on a plate, without either having had to work for it, or care about having any of those virtues, of which you wrote.
They will never make films like this again.
We'll never see the likes of Gary Cooper or John Wayne. That's for sure. This will always be a favourite of mine.
@Harikus it is a really good movie. Put it on your must watch list.
Rev, Clint Eastwood came close on a couple.
You are right. We just have a few who get the MH. But we have many heroes who don't.
I’m 42 and this is way ahead of my time but wow these old movies are phenomenal, I just finished it’s a wonderful life ! And when I was younger I always hated movies like this. And now I love them.
Those are two good officers. Never forget that subordinates we lead are people, each with their own beliefs, convictions and dreams!
One officer, however, tries to use the Bible as a sort of law book and fails. The senior officer gets to the heart of the issue.
Alvin York gave his allegiance to the United States, and his heart & soul to God.
Go Vols!
A great movie about a truly humble man who answered when he was called for duty.
So was Hacksaw Ridge with Doss.
@@docalexander2853 yea but this is honestly still 1000x better just due to the writting alone
He answered his country and God.
I'm from Oneida TN and I knew Alvins Son. Alvin sent the movie back to Hollywood until it was as it happened and no lies were in it. They gave in and could not afford to spend anymore on it and thought the truth would fail. But Academy Awards followed.
Except the part about being struck by lightning.
God bless Sgt. York!!! For his principals!!! In God and Jesus Christ!!!!
@@drakesucks I always wondered about that part. He may have allowed it for the brevity of it compared to a longer train of events.
One of the most powerful scenes in any movie..ever. KInda puts the world in perspective...
People who understood the threat to freedom back then wouldn’t recognize today’s govt. or nation. We take so much for granted with so many people who’d have zero spine to defend their freedoms today. Thank god for those earlier generations willing to stand up to the tyranny so many seem to embrace today.
Then be the Alvin York you idolize.
After watching this and thinking back on the Oscars this year, it's really sad to think that the Hollywood that once was, will never be again and may even disappear completely.
Lots of truth to that. We don't like to make movies that inspire anymore. When was the last time a movie made you want to be a better person.
There were perverts, drug addicts, and communists in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s. They just weren't allowed to use the film industry to push their agendas. These days, anyone who is straight or Christian has a target on their back in Hollywood.
It is gone.
@@donnaleveron6511 you are probably right..
Decades ago, I used to have Oscar-watching parties. Now I rarely see a contemporary movie, and I don't follow the Oscars at all.
There are men like this in every generation, every community. Rarely are they called, but they are there if needed.
hoodoo2001 I nominate Jordan B Peterson! A father’s voice to many.
Gary Cooper one of the greatest actors' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A female actress said he was built like a horse and could go all night.
The women said he was built like a horse and could go all night. LOL
And one of the great womanizers of Hollywood also.
Wonderful comment.
This is one of the greatest movies ever made with a simple message. I love this movie and this scene, it inspired me to join the service and serve our country. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your service.
This man and others fought for our rights, and freedom.
I am proud to be an AMERICAN!
Lol, enters a European war like 12 months before it finishes and claims they're fighting for their freedom, piss off Yank
All history classes should show films like these historical masterpieces
I get all choked up when i see that scene. Especially when the major says. " that's your heritage and mine too and every American. But sometimes the cost of that freedom is high sometimes it cost everything we have even our lives " God Dam. My eyes water up. : ) i first saw this movie as a lil boy at my Grandpas on reel 8mm. One of his favorite movies.
garyd044 You like this movie about an American hero and a devout Christian, yet your profile picture seems to glorify Lenin and the Soviet Union? Do you see the irony in this?
garyd044
York and ilk , Audie Murphy, were murderers. They may be in Hell
...irony abounds, within and without.
Unlikely, shit for brains.
Doug McGahie the larger give away is gary has no affinity for the Christian when he takes the Lord's name in vain,
How powerful. I wish this movie would be seen by the younger generation and many in DC.
The only film maker making movies close to this today is Mel Gibson. No irony. No sarcasm. Just love of storytelling of a pure hearted protagonist. Beautiful movie.
Yes indeed - Hacksaw Ridge is amazing, as is Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss.
Gary Cooper was one of my favorite actors growing up on old sitcom and movie reruns , amongst Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson , Chuck Connors and Clint Walker.
I came across this movie about a year ago on this here RUclips. Finally saw the whole thing on TV. Recorded it because I enjoyed it. Thanks. Problem is they don't make movies like this anymore.
Duhhh, because they made 911 instead as a recruitment tool duhhhhh
Brilliant movie and a great performance by Gary Cooper and a wonderful supporting cast
This Made me the American I am now, watched this back in grade school and it stuck with me for life! This is what is missing in the world today!
Me too
Hard to find quality men & women with this type of character in today’s society. Great movie, great actors and inspiring story. Thank you for sharing
I respectfully disagree. They are everywhere, but they don't go around thumping their chests like donnie the coward!
Mark 🇺🇸 you almost had my attention until I view “coward” wasup with that comment??? Respectfully, I agree with you on half of your comment “ Chest Thumper”
You take issue with my use of the word "coward", but say nothing about Trump's denigration of our military and others. I have no beef with you, but I won't apologize for a failed human being! (Trump)
Mark 🇺🇸 I agree I have no issue with you or your opinion. I respect difference of each others perspective. No apologies necessary. Currently there’s enough hate and discontent in this world. We don’t need to keep adding to the problem. Have a good week, stay safe 🇺🇸
@@DRFelGood You're right. I can choose peace.
What an awe-inspiring film - great actors especially Gary Cooper, one of my top favourites; wonderful message about faith, freedom and courage; and a story of a simple, honourable and remarkable man! This film is a substantial and nurturing food of the soul! Highly recommended to all!
I’ve been to the Alvin C. York state historic park. If you are the least bit interested in his history you should go there! The guided tour was amazing! We learned so much about his personal life! And as a bonus ,the area is absolutely beautiful! There’s also a grist mill near there that you can walk through!History buffs should make this a bucket list must do!
I went 4 years ago and had the opportunity to meet and talk with Alvin's son. The ranger told me the family comes to the home place museum often.
I'm a WW1 reenactor that has been there a couple of times, sure I portray a German but it's still an amazing experience.
@Just think I wasn't talking about the scene. I was talking about having gone to Alvin York State Park.
Nor did I say anything about the go government.
I'm so glad I was growing up watching these movies, and I still do!!!
It wasn't very long ago this movie was free on RUclips... I've enjoyed watching Sergeant York's movie many times over 30 years. I have this movie in VHS I bought over 30 years ago. I myself was born and raised in the hills, hollers and mountains of Tennessee.
America's masterpiece. No lovelier place in the world than the hills of Tennessee.
I saw this movie with my dad when I was a kid. Used to go to York theater at Fort Bragg. Camp Gordon I was there took basic and Camo training it's an honor just to know who he is.
9:08 9:11 I truely wish i could be been more like Alvin. He was a simple man and his faith unbending. Still working on it. RIP Cousin Alvin. I'm sure your in Gods loving hands. I stop by his grave every time head home. I was at his funeral.
This scene never gets old
The scene where he overlooks his farm, brought tears to my eyes. Absolutely incredible film
With a surname like "York", I suspect he may be of English ancestry as opposed to Scottish or Irish.
What I get out of this piece is humble is not simple and he s humble but decent.
It reminds you that God uses people who for the most part are not famous or popular. These people God used to accomplish great things.
Jeremiah 51:20
He says, "You are My war-club, My weapon of war; And with you I shatter nations, And with you I destroy kingdoms.
One of my favorite movies of all time. They don't make movies or men like this anymore. I wish everyone would think like Alvin.
Maynard G Krebs yeah, real big wuss that can’t hold a candle to York’s truck-sized balls
Maynard G Krebs I was talking to that Leo fella, not you, sorry
Maynard G Krebs take care
I saw the old Sgt. York movie maybe for the first time. Whether or not every detail is factual, it is an inspiring and worthy watch, depicting common decency, respect, Biblical morality and ethics, and simple and humble patriotism! All of which is polar opposite attitude of the current culture. Too bad this is not still championed as the *right way*. Look at our crumbling society.
One of the greatest scenes in movies!
My wife’s kin folk live in the big holler where York’s family and him came from. York was a great American. I love this movie I sure do.
I remember watching that movie, as a kid , before I knew what it meant. God bless our soldiers.
Truly classic movie. Movie like this has no R & R censored. Really enjoy this old classic. Thanks for sharing it. Much obliged.
This movie was made before my Mom was born but It is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen .
Way back when it meant something to hold to Truth, Honor, and the Written Word. God Bless our American soul. We are His.
This should be required viewing in every high school and for every person about to enter the armed forces! All Americans, in whatever form, need to fight for what makes this the greatest country ever created. God bless America!
Major, we lost that freedom. It is no longer a government of, by, and for the people. I lament that.
Movies no longer celebrate innocence.
you are so right. now. Hollywood is just the opposite. they are a bunch of elitists who think we are too stupid to brush our teeth.
No mate we have not lost that freedom, Freedom is not free... Our republic is very valuable... In a republic we are the government.
We will be again.
We never lost it. We have been encouraged to forget that we have it.
F-k you!”
This is a brilliant film. Timeless.
Major knew when his men started dying. York would defend them with his life...
Great movie, I just re-watched it on TCM. I am glad that Gary Cooper won an Oscar for his role in it.
EXCELLENT MOVIE I'VE SEEN IT MANY TIMES, EACH TIME I SEE IT AGAIN, I GET SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT. I'LL WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN A LOT OF HEART IN THIS MOVIE
How nice it is that there are conflicting quotes you can use any time you feel like it.
God bless Alvin C. York! Hoorah!
Saw this movie as a kid...
Tears in my eyes...
A lot more kids need to know this movie this is my favorite!
Some of the greatest acting I have ever seen.
I ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT FREEDOM ISNT FREE . THIS COUNTRY IS WORTH FIGHTING AND IF NEED BE DYING FOR !!
Bill Huber The Left try and piss this freedom away everyday! Apologies for the profanity.
I’m a with you with one little exception. This country is worth fighting for and if need be, making those other poor bastards die for testing our resolve.
I think reading some of the comments about this segment from Sergeant York is worth your perusal.
I'm gonna be a thinkin about everything in this scene for a long time
Good for you! Thanks for doing that.
May God have mercy on us all.
and today I weep for my country
Don't weep stand fast and be heard.Give freedom it's due with whatever strength you have. Your country ,depends on those just like you. You will prevail. God is with you
And add to the emotional thoughts that are going through Alvin Yorke's head play by Gary Cooper, it's Really cool to watch as dog follow him up to the ledge and LAY Down and as soon as Gary Cooper gets up the dog gets up and it's Really a great piece of cinematic history.
Excellent CO and a strong scene.
How grand it would be if more Americans would see this scene! Great movie. Outstanding message.
I shared it on Facebook.😉
What young people need to see and understand.
Mac, that is not enough to say.
Stand up, and step up...Son of Danel.
This segment should be mandatory viewing for all politicians.
I've only ever seen this film once and I loved it
Sergeant York is supposed to be in my family tree; a third cousin or something. I knew he was a known war hero. No one talks about him today or when I was growing up, so I didn't understand that he was such a huge deal. I had no idea there was a movie about him. Wow.
The mark of a good man...willing to see someone else's viewpoint and consider the alternatives
Boy they don't make movies like this anymore GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY
I will always love this movie!
I LOVE OLD MOVIES LIKE THIS!
First two lines, genius. Third line, Ignorant. Forth is a nice sentiment.
Papa Mac. You have your opinion and I have stated mine.
Hey, thanks for pointing that out Keith.

One of the best movies ever made
that moment on the hilltop when the bible hit that passage was the turning point in my life when struggling within in regard to entry into service and the taking of life in combat. but i also did research on alvins reluctance to have any movie made about his life, seems he had 2 demands, 1. that cooper played his part, and 2. that no hollywood B.S. , "stick to the exact facts of his story". i know it sounds corny but its the truth, and i sometimes wonder how many other men of faith had the same experience.
I have had this battle in my own mind in hypothetical. It's a fine portrayal.
We pass "Jim" Town many times a year going to Oak Ridge and I always think of Alvin York. I'm 70 years old, and graduated high school in 1970, when Alvin York and his heroism in ww1 were still well known
An excellent movie that probably should have been shown in all high schools in the U.S., and perhaps especially shown for the teachers and school administrations.
The best movie i saw.
