Yea shit happens brother, but if you’ve seen the rest of the DR Nova videos it all worked out in the end. This converter and welded trans has been doing good for almost 2 years now. 👍
I also broke two ears off my 80e from not having the converter all the way in.. which in the process crushed the pump gear a little causing a little burr where the converter goes into. Had to change the pump gear to get the converter all the way in after that, or file down the burr I created first lol.
I believe that may have been the issue as well. We though we had it clicked in 3 times but the first “click” was iffy and it was awful close to the flexplate when we were putting the bolts in. At the time we could still turn it and thought we were good because we though the belhousing was already flush with the engine. One of the hazards of working in a tight space where we couldn’t see all the way around. 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah Jakes performance has a video of converter installation and basically says the three clicks means nothing, and that you should always measure. Wish I would have know that before I broke two ears of my bell housing. But I really feel like that’s the same thing that happened with yours. So if you do get your bell housing welded you may either need to swap the pump out of just swap the gears like I did. I filed the burrs I created off the pump gears just to see it actually fit onto the converter but still used new pump gears.
Yea it sucks. Probably gonna be a few weeks before I can get any time off to go back over there and mess with it. 12 hour shifts 7 days a week are wrecking my whole summer.....not to mention my RUclips channel. 😒
Ya that sucks I hate laying down working on transmission i just had to pull my trans from one of my suburban to replace my other suburbans transmission on a piece of plywood and both were oily
Yeah that does suck when that happens. As long as the break is not catastrophic, a compentant welder should be able to weld it up and the trans be just fine. If you weren't so far away, I would weld it up for you.
Yea I think he was about 8 beers up before I even got there. Lol. After the bellhousing snapped, the moonshine came out though. It’s been a really rough Sunday. 😜

I just installed my Total Transmission Converter. Thanks for the stamp of approval. Just a quick question, I have 1/2 Gap between the Converter and Flexplate. Did you experience anything like that?
You want between 3/16-1/8” gap between the converter bolt pad and the flexplate. If you have 1/2” gaps then you need to use a washer that’s about 3/8” thick on every bolt between the flexplate and converter to put you at the 1/8” of in and out movement.
Actually, after re-reading my explanation I really don’t feel like I explained that well. So I’m case anyone else reads this I want to clarify. You want about 1/8” of pullout from the transmission. So basically if you push the converter all the way into the transmission, you want to only have to pull it back out about 1/8” to bolt it to the flexplate. So you make up that difference with washers/spacers. When you said you had a 1/2” between the converter and the flexplate, I assumed that meant with the converter fully seated in the transmission and that’s what I recommended adding 3/8” worth of washers because that would allow you to pull the converter out 1/8” and bolt to the flexplate. Hope that makes sense.

I would just give them a call. Ask for Tony. They may not be building them at the moment because of the shutdown. They ARE in Chicago so...
Ok Tony just reached out to me. He is in fact being flooded with calls about this converter. He has informed me that while he is still building converters, the manufacturer that supplies some of he “kits” that he uses to build these converters is currently shut down. BUT he is working with a local manufacturer attempting to find a way to replace those components. My personal opinion is if you aren’t in a huge hurry then I would just hold out till this virus thing blows over and he starts pumping these out again. They really are a terrific bargain in my opinion. They can also build even beefier triple disk versions if you plan to make more power than these can handle and from what other have told me they are well under “competitors” pricing at that level as well.
They’ve been on back order for three months now brother. Sonnax supplies the heavy duty parts used in these converters and they were shut down over the virus several months ago. @@BadLuckGarage i just called them and they said they wont have any til june, im just gonna wait. I was about to order a circle D for 700 bucks but i saw your video and i really liked the way it performed, thanks👍
Yes sir. If you don’t mind, share this video or better yet the second video where we actually tested the converter at the track and get the word out. These things were selling like hot cakes after I made that video until this Covid crap started. Now I’m getting blown up with messages and emails asking why they’re out of stock. Lol.
He said it ain’t that much fuckin lighter 😂😂😂
That’s a fact Jack! 🤣👍
Have the same flag in my game room!!

@@chrismigl27 ah ok,lol. I was about to rewatch the video to see what you were referring too. Yea Rays had that one for as long as I can remember. I’ve actually caught some flack for it in other videos where we’ve been working in his garage. But everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose. Even if it has nothing to do with the videos. 🤣
You didn't show the part where you actually removed the old torque converter, you just cut ahead and skipped the removal. That was the most important part. that's what the DIYers want to see.
Thanks for watching. Glad this video helped you out.
@@BadLuckGarage I mean, I don't want to be the stereotypical internet a-hole, but I said that it didn't help. I said the most important part was skipped.
@@William-the-Guy Thanks for watching. I’m sorry you weren’t able to grasp the actual purpose of this video. “The most important part” was the fact that 3 years ago when this video was made, this way by far the best deal you could get on a performance converter for a 4L80e. I outright said in the video “this isn’t a tutorial”. The purpose of this video was to show people there was a budget option for a converter..not to show them how to install it which we’ve shown in detail dozens of times on multiple vehicles already on this channel.
how is it holding up?
He drives it to work everyday and it’s been good for almost a year now. You can see more videos of the car in its playlist including the video where we track tested this converter.

@@BadLuckGarage they are still out of stock:/ any info? when they will be back
@@dannyboyrides4507 Yes, look for Texas Eagles comment on here and read my replies. I get several people every week asking me about this. Basically Covid caused a parts shortage from Sonnax and a huge demand for this converter after I made these videos at the same time so theres a huge backlog now.
HOW THE HELL CAN ANYONE BITCH AT YOU FOR NOT SPENDING THE BIG BUCKS FOR YOUR CONVERTER ? It's YOUR money and YOUR car ! YOU can do anything you please, any way you want to. All the naysayers can just yell at their mamas to throw another cheeseburger to 'em, down the basement stairs !
It happens all the time brother. But nobody wants to foot the bill. LMAO. 🤣 I think a lot of people think I’m making a bunch of money on RUclips or something but the fact of the matter is, at this point it would take almost 3 months of RUclips revenue just to buy one of those $650 converters. This ain’t Cletus Mcfarland over here. 🤦🏼♂️
I need a 4l60 converter
They make them as well.
Link?
I have no idea exactly what you want or need. Click the link in the video. Then goto total transmission Chicago’s ebay store. They make several different ones with and without balloon plate and different stall ranges. You can find one that suits your wants and needs. 👍🏻
You need to change the name of your garage.
You need to watch more videos and you’d understand why I named it that. 🤣👍
Boo there outta stock!
Dammit Man.. so frustrating when your doing great,, and then , Bam.. straight to crap.
Yea that’s life brother. We’ll get it worked out.
They're $445 now, just an fyi
Brother this video is over a year and a half old. Prices go up. But even at $450 its till $100 cheaper than the nearest big name built to the same specs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one for that price.
@@BadLuckGarage plus, they're in stock now. I wonder if I went through his website if it would be cheaper?
@@claytonhaske I think its the same price either way. I just use ebay because its easy and I can track all my purchases in one place for tax purposes.
Probably should not be drinking beer working under a car breaking shit !
Probably shouldn’t be doing at least half the shit I do....but I keep doing it.
Oopse and outch
Yea that sucked at the moment, but as you can see from the follow up videos we made it work and that transmission and torque converter is still in the DR Nova 3 years and thousands of miles later!👍
The flag 🤕
So let me get this straight, you watched a video about a great budget option torque converter for a great price but your worried about my uncles garage decor? You’ve got some issues brother. 🤣
