Hey Despoina! Unless you have a kiln at home, it's unfortunately not possible to glaze at home! (but lots of people DO have kilns at home!) The final temperature necessary to make it food-safe depends on the clay, but it will be at least 1000 Celcius, so unfortunately firing in a kitchen oven won't work. You CAN finish your piece in a kitchen oven with various materials, but it will never be safe to use with food or drink. If you don't have your own kiln, and wish to fire your work to food-safety, I suggest you check with a local school or ceramic studio to see if they have a public kiln.
I had the sane question :( I really sad, I would like make my own ceramic, but I don't have anything to make it food-safe, and I have big ideas for my own cups 😆 ☹️
This old video came up, and I'm really loving watching it and seeing how you're doing a lot of the same things you still do today, but you're doing them using a knife and fork and a little jar of slip, instead of a big fancy studio! Like, I did already know that pottery was accessible to people without fancy tools, but it's one thing to know and another thing to see it in action.

So thankful I found your channel!! I just started handbuilding clay and I tried making a mug using the slab method. After attaching the bottom base to the main body of the mug, I really find it hard to clean the inside part. Every time I try to clean one part, I just end up leaving a new mark on another area. I hope you can give me tips on which tool I can use especially when the mug is tall and narrow. Thanks so much! Your help will be much appreciated :)
There are tools you can buy which would help. I'm thinking of a wooden tool whose name I can't remember lol. Also, let it dry enough so you aren't leaving marks when you touch it. 🙂
There is a much easier way to acheive a miter joint. Roll your clay to overlap each end and make one slice from top to bottom, at the appropriate angle, through both layers. They will then have identical join surfaces👍

Hi Rebecca, I don't have the dimensions anymore, but on average the clay will shrink 10%. So you can measure the size you want, and then add 10% onto it when you're building it. With some simple math, you can get the circumference, etc.

I know you touched upon it briefly about safety and clean up in your first vid - but could you do a working video of how you safely clean up after yourself once you have created a cup/bowl? I'm cautious of the paint brush i use for the slip, the excess pieces of clay on the fabric or the dirty sponge/cloth etc etc.

That's a totally different kind of pottery I don't feel confident enough to teach, but I'm sure there's loads of demos here on youtube, just search for "slip casting".

Thanks a lot! Anything that touches food or drink needs to be fired in a real kiln. But other things like sculptures and stuff can be done with air-dry or oven-firing clay. I will be sure to touch on that :)

Hi, which paint is food safe or which one do you recommend I saw one comment here when you said that our pieces must to reach 1000°C to be food safe because of the glaze I think but I wanna to know if I use acrylic paint it will become food safe if they reach the 1000°C? I wanted to do all the steps of doing a mug at home but if unfortunately it isn’t possible I’m going to search someplace with a kiln, idk.
What clay is this? Can I use Bentonite? Is there a clay that I can use that xan be lead safe, and also use it without a lead glaze? I am new to this, I love the smell of clay pottery, but I need to avoid heavy metal for personal reason.
Of course. Lead is sometimes in the glazes, but it is banned in many countries. I use stoneware clay. I recommend getting your clay from a ceramic supply store.
why would you let your waste pieces dry out to reclaim ? just wedge them into a ball and add it back to your hump ... also i would wait for the clay to be leather hard ... its easier to controll and that way you have less warping during firing....

If you cover the rim, it helps the cup dry evenly. Sometimes rim part gets cracked cuz it dries faster than other parts

No! Please don't try to eat/drink out of air dry clay! It can be toxic.
