    If you could do this project over, what would make it easier? I’m genuinely considering making a mosaic using your method. Would you bevel the tiles again? Can you see the bevel after the grout has been applied? Such beneficial & unique content you’ve shared, thank you!

    • @PotterytothePeople
      @PotterytothePeople  Год назад +35

      thats such a great question. You CAN see the bevel and it looks nice, but I’m not totally sure it was worth the labor haha. I think if I did it again I would do everything the same except just sponge the edges smooth, not bevel. 😄

    • @walkerpottery9296-Natalie

      @@PotterytothePeople Thanks for the feedback, I’m going to try it out with just wiping the edges smooth. My idea is to make a bazillion tiles and just glaze a few at a time when I’m glazing other pieces. When I have all the bazillion done I’m going to create some sort of mosaic with all the random colors. 🩷❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🩵🖤🤎

    If you had a tool that cut a v you could bevel the lines before you cut them apart. It’d save you lots of time.

    Hello from McMinnville, Oregon. I just discovered your videos as I was recovering from big toe joint implant surgery. Ice and elevate…no stairs. I have enjoyed watching you think through each project, problem solve and make a difference in your surrounding and your business. When there is a mistake you learn from it and your enthusiasm and gentle voice is easy on the ears. You are a joy to watch.

    My guess for the board size is that you ordered it with the tile size of 3cm. Then using the 3,1 + spacing, it adds up until you don't have space anymore

    Nice work! I used to do a lot of tile and mosaic work, darker grouts usually crush it with most designs. Grey or even charcoal grout is my fav, really makes the colors pop. Schluter edging will also tie it all together nicely. Another tip because I'd love to see more of your homemade tile and designs: lay your tiles out face down on big sheets of clear packing tape, glue mesh to the back, cut to easy to move size pieces.. flip..boom easy to install sections. Move them on plywood boards. I've done some huge mosaic installations this way. One was over 14,000 pieces. I also highly recommend mapei products. Glad to see you mix your own grout instead of premixed 😩

    • @PotterytothePeople
      @PotterytothePeople  Год назад +4

      genius! thats amazing. I thought about using a dark grout but then I chickened out haha white felt safe. But I’m totally hooked so this wont be the last :)

    • @chompers11
      @chompers11 Год назад +1

      @@PotterytothePeople exciting. I think a lot about really odd shaped pieces fitting together. Also mosiacs for outdoor installations, your work would look so good in a garden. Pick up a cheap mapei color matching kit for grouts, they have like 30+ colors. You can do some amazing stuff

    I just watched your latest tile video and clicked to watch this old one. I’m only just in the start of this vid but you’re dipping again, then wiping the bottom clean.
    I wonder..
    Why not just dump all the tiles into the glaze then pick them out and wipe the bottoms?
    I love your channel.. you’re brill ❤

  • @Worrier629
    @Worrier629 Год назад +3

    Wonderful that you’ve finished the sign and simply pushed ahead in doing so :-)
    I make mosaics and I’ve been trying to figure out tile making so it was useful for me to watch your project. It’s always useful for me to watch your videos :-)
    I’d have only insisted that you stick the tiles to a fibre mesh sheet instead of dry-laying them on the table. Then the fibersheet mosaic could be stuck to a board (to keep it movable) or to the wall directly. PVA is ok for indoors but we do let the glue cure over 24 hours before grouting…PVA is water based and the grout introduces moisture so it can dislocate the tiles. Many mosaicists ‘polish’ their grouted mosaic tile by tile or in small sections with a soft rag to remove the grout haze instead of using a damp sponge. But…you did so well and the sign is up and shining. :-)

    I remember that the Art Department head at my community college (I took a ceramics class) said that she paid for all of her schooling by selling the tiles she made. She got her degrees in the 1990s but she mentioned that it was how she glazed her tiles that was the major selling point for them, she went into detail about how to get a good glaze and how glazes work. That information is gone from my brain, but I do remember the bit about the tiles.

    13:19 If the tiles are 3.1 and you want a 2 mm grout line then each grid square should be 3.2 not 3.3. With 3.3 you end up with a 4 mm grout line. It looks like you have about 25 or so tiles per row. With an extra 2 mm in between each tile, that’s an extra 5 cm.

    Because you didn't use "Thin Set" under the tiles, you used "cheap craft glue," the weight of the tiles plus the grout will pull the tiles off of the board. Guaranteed. Glue won't hold tiles plus grout. It looks cool, but give it time.😮 I wouldnt have used a wooden board. I recommend using Backer board, Fiber Board. It absorbs the tile and thinset to the board and holds it firm. Then grouting won't pull the tiles off.
