For me Sonic 4 Episode 1 is set after this hack:
The rest of the Death Egg Falls into the island forming Mad Gear Zone and the Máster Emerald ends Up in an unknown place,Sonic lands into Splash Hill and sets to stop the evil doctor once for all.
