Scrap Brain is kind of GOATED thanks to this video. That 50 ring elevator was arguably the coolest thing I've seen in the classic Sonic games. The sheer fact that rings had a purpose outside of lives and special stages is mind blowing.
I came in all smug, thinking you couldn't outwit me. And then you brought up the useless platform in SBZ3. Over twenty years of experience and I never knew this...
Right off the bat, I didn't know you could clip through the spike platform in Marble zone. But I knew literally everything else in marble zone! Arghh!! If you had just rearranged the order of all the marble zone tips, I would've lasted longer going into this video blind 😭 side note, I'm always happy to see you in my notifs
I didn't know that you could skip 80 seconds of waiting around in Act 3 by going through a secret passageway. Though I did know that you could skip waiting on the block to get through the lava. Turns it from a waiting game to blocky platforming which I guess is an improvement.
What's funny is that this can _only_ be done in the release version. If you try this in the prototype, you just can't pass through on either side of that spike crusher.
Interesting, I had no clue about the Scrap Brain 3 platform! There was a mod for Sonic 1 2013 dubbed "Cybershell's Ring" that restored the single ring on the alternate path of Labyrinth 1 to the 2013 version, I believe named as such due to Cybershell making that single ring more well known. I patiently await someone creating a mod called "RedHotSonic's Platform", to restore our glorious platform so it can finally be seen the way it was meant to be seen.
@@rjd-kh8et That's what I want to know. I think I recall someone said they put the ring back, but I didn't make the jump when I played through so I did Labyrinth the normal way. Though I also redid the special stages to beat them all first try, but they added a 7th emerald to the game so you can turn Super Sonic. Even if it's non canon (given the ending cutscene shows the 7th emerald pop up from the ocean while flying to Westside Island.)
You forgot some things: a) The infamous Illegal Instruction crash which occurs in Labyrinth Zone 1 and 2. On Act 1 is easier to reproduce it than on Act 2. b) The erroneous Camera-Y moving up under the start in Marble Zone 1 near the green rock - which kills Sonic immediately if done correctly c) The "pit of death" in Green Hill Zone 1 due to immense speed on a loop d) The secret path near the ending of Spring Yard Zone 2 (that one with a lot of rings) e) Sonic can kill himself falling onto a pit if Eggman is hit on his departure sequence in Final Zone. If not hit, nothing special occurs if you try to jump off the platform f) In Green Hill Zone 3, near the boss you will traverse a bridge... If you fall from a very high altitude, you can bypass the bridge collision and lose rings or shield instead. Sonic will not die because the pit is, actually, filled with spikes! Regarding Scrap Brain Zone 3 platform, I really didnt know that :o However, I remember seeing that thing in Sonic Jam or another hack that I forgot the name...
The only things I didn't know were the Labyrinth and Star Light death glitches! I never hear them discussed because most people don't like discussing "bad" glitches, I guess XD

See, this is the nice thing about Sonic 1: The speed is still there, you just have to use your head in order to get it, rather than it just being given to you.
Very ironic to say "Use your head" when these secrets make no sense. Random hidden walls with no indication of it existing or seemingly deadly pits that give you no reason to check them.

That Final Boss glitch! I remember playing it and was like Hang on, haven't I hit him like 20 times?! Thank you for explaining and validating my experience!!
I adore sonic 1 so much, such a great childhood game that has surprised me a good few times in all these years, I did not know about the access to the scrap brain 2 monitors until just the other month when playing casually and seeing the invisible block appear because I felt like standing still for a moment!

Although I wasn't aware of a couple of minor things, you get my like because it's the first time I see someone mentioning the bugged monitor in Scrap Brain 2 that I found so many years ago.
I knew about all the shortcuts in Marble Zone and Spring Yard Zone but didn't know you could clip through that platform. Finding shortcuts like that was always something I liked doing in Sonic games and it's part of what makes good level design satisfying. People that don't get on with Sonic games usually have the problem that they feel like they need to be going fast; it's not about going fast right off the bat, it's about exploring and learning a level's layout - then you can go fast.
Fun fact: in sonic mania when 0:26 came back it was blocked so that you needed a fire shield, you would either get the monitors or a big ring depending on the gamemode your playing it on.
I had already hit like by the time you'd said not to hit the like button, but in fairness I didn't know that you could squeeze through that gap in Marble or that the platform in Scrap Brain even existed. Great video, looking forward to Sonic 2 if you do it... that was the start of my gaming journey~
The second one got me here, lmao. I’ve been playing this game for most of my life, so the time I’ve been playing is now getting terrifyingly close to 15 years, but most of these still surprised me.
I actually didn't know about any of these. The first Sonic game I ever got my hands on was Sonic 2 back in 1992, I only played Sonic 1 as a three day rental. Not exactly enough time to discover all the secrets! So thank you for showing these, I'll be heading to Origins again to see how many of these I can grab for myself :)
That first trick shown in Marble Zone takes me WAY back - I actually made a video about it thinking that it was groundbreaking. The method was slightly different but the outcome was the same.
I think I knew half of these and maybe some I'd forgotten about. Secret areas youd.only find in a magazine. Those days are gone man. There was a code that enabled you to add sprites to the map. Cool video
I knew everything that you mentioned lol I'm surprised you didn't talk about Zips or screen wraps. I will not dislike the video keep making these videos I'll keep watching
The big Marble Zone shortcut is actually the only way I know how to complete the level, I've never gone any other way. I appreciate that you take it for granted that we know already why the Press Start Button text is not there normally.
I’ve also been playing this game for over 30 years. it’s my favourite 💜thanks for doing this 🙏I knew most of these. I can never get that floating platform in ‘labyrinth zone’ to work for me though 🤔
I never actually knew you could jump in between the spike thing in Marble act 1 and even less the secrets on the japanese Mega Drive nearly at the end of the video you really made me learn something new and i also played Sonic 1 a dozen of times! Thanks m8 i already left my like soon after the video ended so yeah!👍
First one is kinda interesting. They make it look like you're not supposed to go further, and would likely fall to your death if you tried, but then there's a generous reward for those who take the leap of faith.
The differences between the NA, Europe, and Japanese versions of the game underscore the effects of Sega of America being responsible for game distribution at the time. North America got it first, so Japan got extra features, like the sky scrolling that you showed. I knew about the platform up and to the left in Spring Hill Zone Act 1 and one of the hidden rooms from Marble Zone, but that's it. Some of what you showed off is a fantastic example of how classic Sonic was designed: Sideways pinball with speed as a feature; the player's reward for being experienced with the game.
HUGE props for actually acknowledging there will be people out there who know all of this. Those videos that are titled "things you didnt know" really get under my skin (more than they probably should 🤣). But i actually didnt know many of these myself, to my own surprise, so this was super entertaining. Also, MAJOR THANKS FOR INCLUDING PROPER CAPTIONS! ♥️ I occasionally have trouble understanding a word or two and auto-captions almost never get it right. Thanks for the kind words. As a person who finds it hard to watch TV or films without subtitles, I feel I have to include them in my videos wherever possible. Also helps for other people where English isn't their first language to auto translate them 😅
I already know some chunks of this game but the the ones on marble like passing through small tunnel without triggering the button and super hidden area in scrap brain like 50 rings required to get in there and also some goodies are impossible to get normally! This video is really helpful, I really use to like your straight to point videos, keep up the good work 👍🏻
And I always tho i knew EVERYTHING about this game, been playing it since 92, having it in many versions, and I knew a lot of the things you said, but not everything, and i'm proud, and surprised now.. good video, real hardcore secrets here
Marble zone IS my favorite Sonic 1 level, I regularly do no-hit playthroughs of the game just to amuse myself, and I never knew you could clip through that spiked platform... I've been playing since the game was first released lol
Wow! I've played Sonic 1 more times than I count. Had no idea about that Labyrinth shortcut, or any of the secrets in Scrap Brain Zone! I mean, the elevator can take you to a higher floor...what!?

I've been playing the Sonic games since I was very little back on the original Genesis, & a few of the facts I honestly didn't know about. Like the the disappearing platforms in Scrap Brain Zone. And I didn't realize there were any additions exclusive to the Japanese version. Thank you for all the fun new facts about this game. Can't wait for the Sonic 2 game.
This video is really helpful, I really use to like your straight to point videos, keep up the good work 👍🏻
And I always tho i knew EVERYTHING about this game, been playing it since 92, having it in many versions, and I knew a lot of the things you said, but not everything, and i'm proud, and surprised now.. good video, real hardcore secrets here
Theres a lot here i didnt know. I recently brought it for ps 4, so will enjoy trying these.
Marble zone IS my favorite Sonic 1 level, I regularly do no-hit playthroughs of the game just to amuse myself, and I never knew you could clip through that spiked platform... I've been playing since the game was first released lol
I'm glad to see you uploading again!
The first thing I didn’t know was the first fact you listed LOL
Great video yo!
I like your delivery, subscribed!
Mate, so much stuff I didn't know abut one of my favourite games! Well bloody done. Liked and subbed.
Wow! I've played Sonic 1 more times than I count. Had no idea about that Labyrinth shortcut, or any of the secrets in Scrap Brain Zone! I mean, the elevator can take you to a higher floor...what!?
Most of those time saving shortcuts I never heard about until now.
Ho ho ho, I knew everything in this video, I have too much time on my hands. ,':^)
Edit: If this vid came out a week ago or so, I wouldve been got on the marble zone act 1 clip, but that was covered on a sonic facts acc i followed :)
However, nice to see you again! I first learned of your existance from your playthrough of Sonic Classic Heroes with Razor & Zenon, one of my favorite comfort vids to come back to here and there, glad to see you're still going! ^-^
I knew most of this except the graphical differences, but felt like giving a like anyways,
It's true that I learned things, not everything but some. Thanks, I can't wait for the Sonic 2 video
I'm gonna revisit this ancient game.
I had played that game so many times, I know a number of little facts myself.
The one thing I learned in this video was the binoculars thing. I cannot see them as anything other than binoculars now thanks to you
I love the GG 8 bit Scrap Brain music. The zone is also better than 16 bit
Well, today I learnt something new about this game I must have logged countless hours on. Take my UPVOTE good sir.
This is the first time I'm commenting on your channel. It's always great to have you back and who knows if we will see you for SHC 2024.
Thanks to you back in October 2023 recording erazor on real hardware series, I'm now apart of the erazor team having playtested the seventh release of sonic erazor during its development process. A lot of surprises for you to uncover when you get round to it.
Anyways, take care.
@@ajcox4771 I've been prepping for SHC24 during my spare time and saw Erazor has been entered. I'm looking forward to trying it out again and seeing what's changed 👍
@@redhotsonic Wow that was a quick response after my comment 11 minutes ago. Okay, looking forward to that, see you around!
There were a couple of things I didn't know. You got my like sir.
