- I buy my first PTO powered attachment for my Kubota LX2610, a used Woods BrushBull 60” rotary cutter. The price was right, but was it really a bargain? It definitely had a major flaw! In this video I detail all the decisions and costs associated with my purchase. You decide if I made a major score, or major fail!

A few final thoughts...
I did purchase and install the aftermarket U-joint and the repaired drive shaft worked perfectly. It will serve as a spare.
If my use of the "coupon" really bothered you, the full price without it ended up being $1197, which Is still an excellent deal based on all the ads that I saw in my research.
Hi Chris. Nice job and a good deal. One thing people that fix stuff tend to devalue is their time. I'm sure you have a few hours and a busted nuckle or two in a project like this. You could probably figure that into the price. Great video. Thanks for putting out great content.
Thanks Jason. You are correct, although it's hard to say since filming really skews the time it actually takes. In the end, I just chalk it up to a fun project that kept me from having to do "honey do" projects. Heck, I'd pay good money to get out of that! 😉👍😂

Many thanks Phil. The seller did provide me with the original manual, although it was pretty clear that it had not been stored in the tube as it lays nicely flat. I'm going to print a copy (I have the PDF) and keep that in the tube.
I do have forks, but they are only 42" so I would have needed chains either way and the bucket has chain hooks. Point taken though!
Ross said orange too! Actually, I'll probably repaint it the original Woods color. My real challenge is finding the decals. Most folks wouldn't worry about it, but as previously mentioned, I'm a bit anal-retentive. 😉😂

Woods makes great mowers. I used one for years mowing interstate right of way for a state DOT. That type of mowing is the acid test for tractors and mowers
The cutter looks in great condition. It is always a gamble buying something that needs work but I think you got a good deal. We find that by repairing something you get a better idea of how it works and how to best maintain it. We have looked at a few cutters and as you mentioned, it is hard to find a good secondhand one that is good value for money

With new equipment prices you probably did pretty good on this deal. You’ll not find a better built deck then the brushbull. You pretty much have a brand new unit now.

When you were adding up the pto shaft parts, I was thinking, why didn't he just buy a new shaft? I bought the Vevor shaft as well, when I started pricing out a new yoke and shaft. cover. 👍
Thanks Rudy. You're right, the Vevor shaft was really a no-brainer. 😉😎 And, yes, I will match the paint. Well actually, it's all faded a bit so I'll respray the whole thing with a close match to the original Woods color. Right now my challenge is finding the "BrushBull60" decals!

That's a good deal, Chris. I recently purchased a cutter (a Woods 60 if I remember correctly) for $500 for my son in law. I never ran it but was told it was in working order. I never asked my son in law. That was 2 or 3 years ago, just before prices went insane.

I can tell you Noel, if I used this on my yard at home mowing would take about 3 minutes! It's hard enough to justify my ZTR! My main use for this will be at the Overlook to cut along road. And I agree with you, if I wanted to sell it I could get a pretty good return I think! thanks for watching. 👍😎

The only other thing that I might add would be a slip clutch at the gearbox. This will protect your investment in the event you hit something that doesn't move.

I could use your help. I am new to tractors and all things that connect to them. I just purchase a rotary cutter using some of the criteria you were using when shopping. I wanted quality construction and not all beat up. I was able to obtain that. However, West of the Mississippi and further West of the Colorado, and way South of San Francisco (San Diego) where there is little agriculture these days, attachments/implements are really expensive even very old and beat up. I thought I did good until I discovered my Rotary Cutter company was no longer in business. Maybe purchased by Rhino or their parent company. Mine is a "Servis S-5" (five foot). I have no clue where I will get blades (it needs them) or the pivots. Also, the connection of the top link (I don't use Quick Hitch) has been modified with an additional part by the previous owner so I am not sure where/how it is supposed to pivot up and connect to the top link from my three-point as there are no other pivot points. I can connect it, but it will be rigid and even I can understand that would be bad. Is there a book, a website, anything that I can use to understand the geometry of how the top link is supposed to connect to the top of the Rotary Cutter?
I really love the construction of my Cutter. It is super well made with very heavy gauge steel for everything and chains to prevent things being thrown out at me or anything around me and Zero rust anywhere with good paint. The gear box and blade assembly turn easy and smooth with no noise or play. The PTO shaft looks nearly new and has all the guards and quick connects. It is shear-pinned but I think I am going to purchase a clutch (old tractor with an over-ride clutch for the PTO Shaft) to protect both my Cutter and especially my Ford Jubilee (with update PTO spline size).
My older Brother would always tell me growing up: "The first thing you learn about a new Hobby is you bought all the wrong stuff". I don't want to prove him wrong once again. Thoughts? Thanks!
Sounds like you got a nice unit. I am unfamiliar with that brand, but that doesn't mean much...I'm certainly no expert. A quick Google makes me think you may be correct about Rhino, and if so, I'd start there. I did find a reference to Servis models Saturn 5 and 6...maybe that is the "S-5"? Just a thought. All you have to do is remember that what you have is a Woods Chris. The best don’t come cheap. I think you have a winner here... and a bargain at that.

@@watershedoverlook I’d definitely give the dealer a call and see what they say. You never know when you might need a warranty claim. I’d ask if the gearbox seals are covered in the warranty too.
I ordered the same size at the woods company, brand new and they delivered it to us for $1600. So far you spent over $1200 on a used one, plus I don't know how many hours you worked on it. You actually lost money with this used brush hog but you did a great job fixing it.

As to losing money on this, we'll have to agree to disagree. I've got roughly $1200 in a rotary cutter that is all new, except for the deck shell, which has some surface rust and faded paint, but is solid and straight. Charging myself for labor kinda defeats the whole idea of "sweat equity". So we have basically the same unit, but mine is not quite as shiny. As to your cutter, all I can say is that price is astounding. I can't find any listings for a new BrushBull 60 selling for less than $3,100. Whoever you bought it from...you better save their number! 😉👍

@@watershedoverlook I went from using shear pins to the slip clutch and oh man I should have done it long ago. Just remember every season to loosen the clutch and slip the clutch then tighten. Other wise the glitches and get rusted together defeating the purpose of slipping in the first place lol

For my tractor a new 4 foot rotary cutter is about $1800. Makes no sense to mess with someone else's problems. Usually if I run across a rotary cutter listed for sale used, it has a blown gearbox, or other major damage....I'd spend the money up front and know from day 1 how the implement was used and treated, rather than going blind into someone else's problems, and that's the only reason you typically find them for sale used, they broke something expensive and didn't want to pay to fix their mess.
I agree William...I don't want to deal with someone else's problems. In this case though, I knew going in that I was going to be replacing the gearbox, which is the biggest and most expensive point of failure. I think I'm sitting pretty good--basically everything is new except the shell which is in excellent shape. Even without my "coupon" I'm only in for $1197. IMHO, that's a bargain compared to $3500 for a new one. (A new BB48 sells for around $2700). Appreciate your feedback William. Thanks as always for watching! 👍😎

I've been tossing around buying a flail mower or a rotary cutter, and given the size of tractor I have, a rotary cutter would be a terrible idea, I'd have to have the loader on the front for ballast, and then have that cutter sticking 6+ feet behind the tractor...the flail mower would be a better solution for me since I mow in tight spaces quite often...and I'm not out trying to mow down small trees HAHA!! BETSCO has a 4 foot flail mower for around $2500 which is what I'm leaning towards...my dealer quoted me almost $8,000 for a flail mower umm, wrong answer LOL. Another channel has the Betsco flail mower I'm looking at and has done a couple of videos using it, and it seems to work extremely well...plus you can run knives or hammers depending on if you are cutting grass or grass/brush with it.
A rotary cutter would be fine for mowing wide open fields, which with my tractor size I don't care to try LOL. Dealer quoted me about $1800 for the 4 foot rotary cutter, not too bad, and its just the standard duty, but for my tractor, you ain't doing anything more than standard duty in the first place HAHA!!
The gearbox is the most expensive part on the whole rotary cutter...there was one here locally with the same issue, great condition but the gearbox was toast, looked up the replacement cost and it was near $1800...umm nope LOL.

I like the idea of a flail mower too but I've seen very few used ones here and a new one is NOT in my budget right now. And honestly, I don't really NEED either one, but, just like the tractor itself...I seem to be able to justify it anyway! Cheers. 👍😎

Beware using the tools for bush hog repair for other mechanical work. I bought a 1" impact wrench from Princess Auto. It promised 1000 ft pounds of torque. It was perfect for removing bush hog blades. It destroyed a wheel stud on my Porsche Cayenne, though. It also destroyed the bolts holding the control arm on a Tundra.

The last 4 brush hogs I ever bought were no more then $500 in working order.. I actually bought 2 of them one time for $500 one was like brand new condition... Would love to have a brand new brush hog for my brand new tractor but then prices are just insane... Neighbor wants to sell me one for 809 feel that's too much for a used one... But it might have to be... Wasn't that many years ago brand new one for $495

What is the total weight of the complete Brush Cutter with PTO driveshaft?
The best number I could find was 560 lbs. No idea if that includes the shaft or not, but if not, I'd guess a max of 600 lbs all in.
