- In this video I wanted to see if the Sawgrass SG500 was really worth the money. People complain about the price of the machine and how expensive the ink is but, how many prints can the ink give you before needing a refill. I have the SG400 and print primarily mugs. I’ve now printed over 500 mugs and probably 50-60 other prints and my original ink supply is now down to about half. So far very impressed.

What ink do I you use and how do you adjust? All of my prints look faded.

Last time I watched this I was deciding what size printer to get. I did get the sawgrass 1000. Absolutely love it. This time I re watched to see how many prints you got, as I now calculating cost for the things I making. 😀 Watching your videos from the start of me only thinking about sublimation, has brought me this far. I know its only slow but I do now have a few orders for my memorial slates. It's a start and with my disabilities at times slowing me down, this is enough for me right now. I thank you sir all the way from England.
I just got my Sawgrass a few days ago. This has been on my mind since I bought it. I was second guessing my purchase because the ink so expensive. Great video!
Second guess no more. You see how many prints this thing just kicked out for me and still had more ink left. I would suggest getting more paper cause your gonna run out of that before you run out it ink. I need more paper now. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏾
I have a sawgrass sg500 and my question is, do you have to use the sawgrass ink or is there another ink that works just as well or better?
I couldn’t answer that question because I’ve only used heat transfer warehouse ink. Also if you use unauthorized ink when you call up for customer support it voids the warrantee.

I recently purchased this exact printer. In less than two months I have made my money back.Great investment. And I prefer hard wired instead of wireless. Printer seems to respond faster. Thanks for the video!

What was your final findings?
Still using the same cartridges as of 1/16/2021. Yellow and black needs to be replaced, the lights are on but I’m still getting prints so i haven’t changed the cartridges yet I’ve been using the printer on average about once a week printing like two sheets on average. Most likely I’m getting the left over inks left in the tubes but i wanna use every drop before I put a new cartridge in.
Thanks for sacrificing your ink to do this video. I was skepical about buying this printer because of the cost of the ink. I don’t sell, I make gifts so it should last me a long time.

I am happy to have found your video. You have actually convinced me to buy the SG 500 sublimation printer. I could actually see your points on why this is a great buy. This was a question I asked myself as to how many prints I can get and you are right, its worth buying. I bought the epson eco and because I am not printing often its clogged up. That's wasting time to clean and to maintain. This does not need the maintenance the converters need so it makes sense.

Thanks for explaining that the ink level drops to half right away because it transfers a bunch to the tubes. That had concerned me as I thought it had used half the ink on very few prints! phew!!!
It’s also $$ comforting to know it can do so many before replacing.

It’s a few years now sense I got my printer. I can say that it depends on. The quality of the ink you buy. You should buy sawgrass approved ink only for the best results. Other ink seams to be watered down and also voids your warantee.
I know this from last year but new to sublimation. Thank you so much for all the info. I’ve seen the printer for $700 and ink $100 each. I’m glad you posted this because I’ve only had mine since Christmas and it already says my ink is almost gone and I’ve only made 8 tumblers, 4 mugs and a few keychains lol!! I was freaking out that it was going to be out soon.
It only takes about 45 seconds for my prints to start from within my Silhouette software, which still uses the PM - I do NOT use the Creative Studio. Conde will tell you NOT to connect WiFi with this machine. I was told by Sawgrass that using PM does help control the ink used. Printing directly from Photoshop, etc, is going to use a lot more ink. I have the software directly installed on my PC - it's not running over the Internet.

Thanks for the video! But, if I could suggest one thing... Edit out the parts where you're just sitting and waiting. This video is 35 minutes long and could have easily been done before 15 minutes with a little cutting on an editor. Otherwise, I enjoy your vids. Thanks again!

This is the same thing I've been saying to everyone. Get "about" 400 prints off one set of inks. I always tell people to "DO THE MATH".
Thanks for this video, I was very frustrated to see how little the starter inks had in them and then the price of the refill ink. This at least makes me feel better about how many prints I can get before needing to refill. but you were forgetting about the cost of the blank shirts, which aren't cheap, so you'd need to probably double the amount of shirts and finding that many customers can be a challenge.
I get what your saying but this is all about the ink cost. To factor in other costing would be complicated as they can be purchased at many different prices. I have made many shirts ect as I sew, so cost again be very different. Ink & printer are main concerns as to how or where people get the medium to print on is too vast.
@@DenisePoole-Closet-Crafts But the video talked constantly about selling for 20$ and ignoring the other costs and then proclaiming that by selling 45 of these magical free and new t-shirts you found and printed on, you can make back the money you spent on the printer.
Obviously the ink is going to last you hundreds of sheets but at least use a benchmark of like $5USD for other material costs just to make the claim more realistic.
Also the question in the video title is "How many prints until you need a refill" and the video does not answer that question unless you consider "more than 60" a sufficient answer.
If you know a ballpark average ink cost per design (using a normal page yield standard for example), you could count how many prints you can make with standard size cartridges. For anyone curious the answer is around 600-700 prints for the 31 ml and 400-500 for the starter inks.

I purchased sawgrass 500, and I did not get that many prints. Way under 50. The ink was more of a waste for me. My prints did not turn out vibrant. I got in contact with the company they walked me through print manager setup and said that was the problem. However, by that time there was no ink left for me to print. It took me forever to get in touch with the company to troubleshoot. I am not feeling good about purchasing ink for the price it is just because I had a terrible experience with it. It was a waste of money for me. However, thanks for your video, and the knowledge you provided.
That’s unfortunate. Yea. I have the sg500 and sg1000 got well over 100 prints with both. Sometimes tech can be frustrating. I’ve had experiences like that with other tech. I decided that ultimately their are so many other people having great experiences that I need my products to work like theirs so I figure it out and have gotten things sorted out every-time. The alternative is to just quit in the product. I don’t quit. Especially if there is proof that things work. The dtg was a little rough. Now I got it running smooth. Gotta do what works best for you. I have SG-400 and I have now 13459 prints on fullpage international A4 size. I bought the printer in 2020. Today I bought SG-500 too.
Wow! 13,459 pages of printouts? How many times have you replaced the ink? Trying to figure out a cost per print ratio.

Hi! Thanks for the video. My SG500 came with the Sublijet starter ink. Once setup there is only 10% of the ink left. I feel that the printer should come with more ink for initial set up.
Mine I just bought it yesterday and installed it. And the ink came like it's empty. Doesn't look like the one in this video. Don't look like it's a stater kit on his printer. And ink it's so expensive. They should sell it with a new set of ink. And not a starter.
they must have updated the drivers since you made this video, because it goes instantly when i send a job to my sg500, faster than my regular inkjet
This is an oldie and it all depends on colors you are using on what gets depleted. Only way to know is to use just back to see how long black runs out.

I have SG400 and the starter inks are 60-70% used now. I have so far print aprox 330 A4 pages. In dark and light colors.

Hey bud, good video. But with regards to the number of prints you achieved it should be taken into account that you are only using 50% of the print medium ie the smaller the print the less amount of ink used and the greater number of pages printed on. Not to mention that you are limited to printing on light polyester items or shirts.
True indeed. Very true.
Make sure you use this printer and get product out because if you let it sit, it will use ink and fill the collection unit. I only printed about 200 prints and my waste tank is full, I have been through $700 in ink since then as well. Not blaming the printer, i just am always so busy with other types of orders I havent been able to use it as much as I want. This time when I refill it, im going to print the hell out of stuff lol.

hi great video... from my research the starter inks that come with the SG500 have 20ml per cartridge as opposed to 31ml when buying new replacement ones.....further 1ml of ink supposedly equates to 1sq ft of ink. so in the grand scheme of things yes the inks expensive but it goes a log way ;-) just subscribed Tony UK
I don´t read all of the comments here, but i think you forget some realy important things about the cost. You said you sell your shirts for 20 dollars, but you have also cost for transferpaper and shirts! So you have much more shirts to sell, to be in an savezone. ;-)
But i realy like your videos and i will start in 2021 with an small business at my home with the Cameo 4, laser engraving and if i made some money with it also the SG500 ;-)!

doesnt the ink levels depend on the type design that you print out? Like if the image is full of alot of solid colors and takes up a 11x17 page?
There is a couple making shirts and stuff and they posted: Because the electricity is expensive they will print everything on one day a week. xD They are limiting themselves which is fine for me. 10k people in my town so there is not much business here i want to work for the whole country tho. If they don't need it i will take the local business with pleasure if the people want me too. xD btw you just gave me a weird idea xD : A good looking logo put on the shirt's front or maybe the back multiple times and press the whole thing every time you do a shirt you just place the logos randomly that way it's always a unique shirt. . Can be a hoodie and just one logo and bunch of words randomly around it placed in a rectangle frame. :D
I see everyone only printing on white or light color garments though.

I have the sg500 and I have purchased a lot from Heat Press nation. I purchased the mug press that can do Tumblers also, and i purchased a 15x15 t-shirt press and I purchased 10 days ago My sublimation oven which I haven't opened yet. I
have ordered Tumblers, from them, And coffee mug , I also purchased 12 pro Phone cases. I love being a crafter , I am a quilter and and a embroiderer . So I though I would try my Hand on Sublimation I really like it. Thank you for your time and patience. Everyone I speak to that got ink elsewhere has issues. They all run out fast. I’m not gonna go buy something that I think will not work to show you that it doesn’t work if I know better. It makes no sense. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I’m still to this day using the same set of inks from this video. They still didn’t run out yet. It’s worth ever dime. It lasts. Cheaper does not last.

I just started watching your videos and subscribed because I love your content. I found you because I was looking for someone to help me use my EasySubli from Sawgrass for my small business. I still have lots of questions though... such as what size prints should I make for S, M, L, XL etc. shirts. I currently use embroidery and vinyl for my children's shirts.
I am sorry, did I miss the amount you can realistically get out of the SG 500 or 1000? I did see that you printed 60 on camera and 20-30 more before that. How many say full page prints on a starter pack. My brother purchased the SG1000 and I am trying not to panic but it's there. 405 prints okay. 90 not okay. Love your videos. Watch you often. keep it up.
I’m not sure exactly because i didn’t keep track after the video. I would say 2 and a half packs of sub paper little more or less. It also depends on where you go your ink from. Heat transfer warehouse might not have the same inks as the place you got yours from if it wasn’t HTW. This video was ink from HTW. From why I gather in the comments different places use different inks so your results might be different.

Sublimation works best with 100% polyester white shirts. If white is in the logo then you would make that part transparent.

You need more than 30. Because the cost of the shirts and paper. so is a gross income but net income with 30 you still short by a lot.

That might be the issue. Depending on where you get the bundle they use different ink so they can offer different prices. In this case you probably purchased it for less than I payed when I got it from heat transfer warehouse so, you got what you payed for. Thats why I recommend heat transfer warehouse and not amazon. You got the Amazon ink bundle.
I apparently got screwed with my starter kit, I was only able to print under 6 things before it ran out of ink :/
I think I got 15 or 20 tops. So I agree. 😞😭
