I was at the site of the fabulous Oregon Star Party a few days before the event and met a long time organizer. When I asked, "How much is party and how much is star?, she answered, "Its all Party and all Star." Great answer. I live over four hours travel from any club but like to travel to the star party at Bruneau Dunes, Idaho, USA hosted by the Boise Astronomical Society. They are a friendly and welcoming group.

Starparties are awesome. I had my first one back in 2006 when I was just starting to get interested in the night sky. Even as a beginner I was welcomed with open arms. And here in the Netherlands it is easy to keep in touch in real life because we live with so many people in so little space. Of course that gives us some of the worst skies available as well... I have made many friends for life on starparties and I've been on several astronomy holidays with some as well. Even better, I've met my wife through astronomy.

The local party of favor in my neck of the woods (Oklahoma, US) is the Okie-Tex Star Party, held in September or October each year at Black Mesa in the far NW corner of the Oklahoma panhandle. It is hosted by the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club. Black Mesa is a premier darksky location in the U.S. and, if the weather cooperates, it's a wonderful opportunity for starlight-shadow quality viewing. Highly recommended if you ever get this direction.
As always, thanks much for sharing.
    Steve

    Nice star-party Dylan!
Me too, just got back from astro-party in Negev desert by local astronomy association .
Actually, it was a bit overcrowded for me, about 200 people showed up.
Couln't get this feel of almost intimacy with night sky we all know.
Most of them were observers, so the sky near them looked like a laser show.
Had to move from them a bit to start our astrophotography magic :)
Ended up with good 6 hours of Bubble nebula data.
...Ehhm, Just figured out - it's another gem hidden from southern hemisphere.
    Totally amazing object!

what amount of time do astro imagers at a star party typically spend on targets? , do they spend all their time on a target or two or just seek out as many as they can? coming from a bortle 6 i typically spend 14 hrs on a target ,how well would a bortle 1 scale down on my integration time?

    • @DylanODonnell
      @DylanODonnell  5 лет назад

So many variables! Each imager is different. But the total time isn’t as important as number of subs. Aim for 40 subs on each channel. The total time varies depending on length of each sub to get the signal you want for the target you’re on.

Why? Light pollution or general social apathy?

Ok here’s my long post... I did promise not to make any more long posts. Just a hi and great video post. But I’m a true liar. Anywho... I stopped bring my stuff to star parties. Why bring my stuff when I can use other people stuff. Sorry I just dropped you eyepiece. Stop bring food... why should I bring food when I can just ask if I can have a piece of your pizza or chicken... you not going to be rude and say no... or are you... cooler with beer in it is free game to me... KIDS! I have my get off my lawn sign for that! As for paying to get in... no way... I just do what we did way back when getting into drive in movies as a teenage... hide in the trunk... that’s boot for all you British speaking people. Showers... we’re civilized... showers are there... there are some showers outside too... wear shorts or optional be naked... we’re all adults. Lastly, I have my stupid questions when moving from scope to scope... how far can you see with that thing... can you see the flag on the moon... blah... blah... blah. People just don’t hang with me at star parties for some reason.

All kidding aside... my first real star part was the ‘Winter Star Party’ in the middle of the Florida Everglades back in the late 80’s. I think the Everglades is the world’s biggest swamp full of mosquitoes, snakes and alligators. After the first couple of star parties it moved to the Florida Keys, a tropical paradise. I used to give a talk on digital imaging and video taping the night sky. I even came up with the idea to stacking video frames way before anybody else. Back then we used a computer board called a frame grabber... basically making a screen shot of the image. Oh the good old days of 640x480 6.35 mm CCD chips.

So...did I get that right. If you use White light a mop of Aussis will shout at you...but...A bunch of drunken Aussies around thousands of $ worth of stuff...is accepted?!?! I would go nuclear if a drunk got near my stuff.
