I had the subscription for a year, and will admit they sent me things to make that I would never have thought of on my own. My issue was the value, for the kit price alone it started slipping and only off brands or clearance yarns were being sent. I think they are great for beginners and people that enjoy that mystery.
Now that you opened it, I only got two yarns and the scrubby. In pink. Yours is so much prettier.
I like your outlook. I watched another channel reviewing the august kits (they pointed out they even used the same photo of the knit pattern on the crochet pattern. That’s just lazy lol. And ahh started typing my comment before you opened your crochet kit. Yep…) And that reviewer was totally disappointed and I do believe he had a point that at that price they could’ve included a few more balls. You know Mary Maxim is paying less than the $2.50 for those when they’re buying them.
I think I’m sticking to my own tactics for now. I’m so low income I heavily buy my yarn on sales and clearance but that’s another way to try new yarns or sometimes colors I may not have otherwise picked. And eh it’s a treat to myself if I find a pattern first/ have a project and then buy yarn but more often I’m buying the yarn I find cheap and then figuring out patterns and projects that work for it.
I might try a kit at some point. But in general too, I’ve found most craft kits more than anything lead to just hoarding unused craft supplies. But very smart if you can keep up with it to survive some months and pause or stop it. There are freaking boxes full of scrapbooking stuff in my parents basement they’ve been holding for over a decade for me because I was in a popular little club at the time. At least that brand was so trendy and did a lot of special releases for their kits so if I ever had the energy I suspect I could sell parts of it for decent money- especially the limited edition stuff. But yeah. Too easy to lose track of subscriptions and they pile up. That’s my biggest problem.

I wouldn't buy from them if the yarn value wasn't more or the same as the kit price. Love how honest you are that's why I watch you channel. Like to go to shops to get my yarn then I can see what the price and what the yarn feels like.
I cancelled a couple of months ago. I loved them for years, but have become disillusioned. I made some beautiful sweaters with the knit kits, and I bought all my specialty yarn from them (i lived in an extra small rural town in the 70s and 80s) not a yarn store in sight. I'm glad I missed this one. I also have skin issues and the scrubby yarn gives me chills to look at, never mind touch. 💜
I would be so disappointed to feel like I'd been ripped off of the dollar value of these kits.
That's exactly why I don't do monthly kit programs. I have tried knit clubs, crochet clubs, card and paper crafts clubs, scrapbooking clubs - and all of them have disappointed me. There is no way that the cost of the products can total what they charge, and they gouge you on the shipping. So I gave up on all of them. And they do tend to stack up. I would rather buy kits that I choose and pay actual shipping (which is often less).
Without even finishing the video yet, yea! I was so upset that knit and crochet kits were identical, AND the price of the yarn just didn’t add up. 😢
I used to buy the kits when I first started to crochet but they started piling up so i canceled mine also. I totally agree with you that the kits should be different

Huh! I've seen a lot of scrubby-type yarn lately. I was in Michaels a few days ago and they had a whole bin of it. They never had that much before....in that store. There was no incentive to buy it like a discount on coordinating kitchen cotton so I passed and picked up a really nice book on granny square patterns instead.
I just signed up for the club. Mine came with purple I was so disappointed. Istarted to crochet it and stoped right away. Yuck
Another surprise Sunday video. I could get use to them. I wondered if the kits were worth the money. I think I pass on them for now. Thanks for the review.
I’m glad you did it. Hopefully they see it. We all feel the same way. Canada here, so our price is 19.99 plus 6.99 ship, PLUS 13% sales tax. And, Canadian dollars, so really….you know the words.
I had originally posted about the knit kit that for the price they should have sent you two sets of yarn in 2 different colors. Then you opened the crochet kit and there was the second set of yarn in a different color. Noooooo!
I've heard a lot of people are disapointed in the kits this month. I haven't looked at any other videos about it.
Sorry about the bummer kits. Honesty is the best policy. I haven't joined any kit club because I have 'start-itis'. No time. Plus the longer I crochet the pickier I get about what yarn I use. I'm not being snobby, or maybe I am. Either way, I like picking what I use, almost as much as I like to crochet. It's half the fun😊. A mysterious stranger making a kit won't know what makes me happy and I like to pick my mysteries too.
I thought it was just me getting picky about my yarn the longer I crochet and I am not afraid to use the term yarn snob🤣
@@wildflower-spirit-creations Yeah. I guess it is a little snobish but only for myself. Everyone should use what they like best. Kits seem like a good way to explore but my pickiness about projects and yarn keep me busy on its own.
Sorry for your disappointment. It's disheartening when you're expecting something better. I do love your honesty. After you make the hand towels, you should rename them "crying towels". I bet you could sell those. LOL
I've watched Ross open a lot of Mary Maxim kits and it just always seems like a lot of their discontinued stuff they are trying to get rid of. It always felt like a scam to me. I just think there are cooler kits out there.

Yes! 😂. A family friend- and bless her she grew up dead and is rapidly loosing her vision so pretty cool that she’s crocheting at all- got super into make washcloths so I have so many of hers. I didn’t think I’d ever make any.
Then I found a designer on Ribblr who has a bunch of free filet crochet patterns for washcloths. I’ve been making a few of those because it was a fun and easy way to try out filet crochet and now I want to design a few of my own. I also picked up a bunch of the Lion Brand scrubby yarn (Scrub off or whatever it’s called lol. It’s a lot softer than most scrubby stuff and pretty colors!) on clearance so I have that to play with at some point too.
But for real. Two months back to back for both kits when so many folks subscribe to both is overkill.
Creative Grama also gets there kits and she has stopped getting them at times.
This was the first month I received of the kits. MM has two more months and if I don’t feel better, I’ll be canceling. We’ll see how it goes.
I always thought the point in a subscription was to get a better value and that has been my experience, I have never cared for their subscriptions for this reason, but every one likes different things and has different reasons, so to each their own. I get the yarnYaY subscription and I have loved most of them and the rest were nice but I don't think I have ever been disappointed in a box; but I have followed Vickie Howell since her "Knitty Gritty" show days and consider her my 1st knitting/crochet guru lol.

I ordered a kit from hershners and 2 other balls. I got the kit with one ball short and only one of my other balls
That is very disappointing especially for the price. I don’t want to take the chance of getting something that I don’t like so I don’t try the kits. 🙏🏻💜

I don't do their monthly kits. But i have purchased many regular kits for like sweaters, afghans, and things, love them, no problems. Annies isnt much better. However, i have made afghan kits where you get so much each month, like and are beautiful.
Hi! I’d use the blue scrubby yarn 🧶 for accent decoration on a Christmas project. Like a Christmas ornament or something like that.
Is it grapefruit ? In your crochet kit ? That one works up so pretty.
The zip bags also cost look up the price according to the bags measurements. Herrschners also sells the zip bags.
They get those bags in bulk, im sure it costs pennies for those. Certainly not enough to make up the cost difference
They could have had a knit and a crochet version in the same kit. Which ever version you do follow the instructions for it. I have always found their kits a little over priced, but you have to consider they are a business trying to make a profit the kits they sell.
Years ago I did mail order fro a Hershners catalog I ordered a ripple afghan in pinks to crochet It was the worst yarn ! Was so disappointed ! I was on a strick budget and I learned the hard way I made it but it pilled etc I never did that again ! I was hoping this would have improved but I like working with nice yarn and my hands approve ! Now I know how much to buy for va project and when I see it get what I need If you're not happy with the yarn it doesn't get done Thats a waste of my time Gotta enjoy the process 💯❤❤
I got this kit in orange colors. Made pumpkins out of the cotton. Will make a scrubby out of the scrubby yarn.

You should try to return both skimpy kits. Just think how much nice yarn you could get for 40$, or how much food!
The August crochet kit was my first kit to receive and I'm disappointed a little too! I'll give it another month or 2 to decide if it's worth it. 😢

Hi Jen, soooo so sorry .It was not right what they did. I do not think they thought that someone would be getting both club kits at least I hope not. 😮 look at it as a confirmation that canceling of a while was a good thing 😊
I just got my August kit yesterday, 9/2. Mine is a pink, red white & blue and varigated pink for the cottons and a rusty dark pink for the scrubby yarn. I have also been avoiding scrubby yarn because my skin is very thin. Time will tell if I make them.
Estelle Sudz is nice yarn. Estelle is more available in Canada. That said, I would still be disappointed in the value of that kit for sure. You could just go buy a bunch of nice Estelle cotton for that price.

Great review! I love cotton so it would have been fun to receive that brand. It’s nice to see what is out there. The scrubby stuff is a dud as who can actually touch that stuff. Be Well.
That is disappointing, I am sorry. I had a subscription from Annie's and basically the price verses value (in yarn or even ideas) was just not there. I hung on for six months and finally gave up. Pretty cotton yarn though. I haven't tried holding the scratchy yarn with the cotton before so I might try that . I have scratchy yarn from mystery bags and such. I took the green and made a "grass mat" for a young photographer I know that does stills, she loved it lol Hope you and the family is doing great. Jennifer have you had your iron and vitamin D level checked lately? Might be the reason for energy drain?? Much love see you next time!!

Oh my thank you for showing us this video. I was thinking about signing up for their knit club, but I think I'll pass. I think I'll stick with Aberdeens wool co. Surprise bags. They have nice patterns that will go with the yarn. But I will go back and watch your other videos first before my final decision. Thanks😊

I'm not happy with the dishcloth knit kit from mary maxim either. Too common. I don't blame you. I can buy yarn cheaper and don't need patterns for a dish cloth or face cloths.

Hey Jen ... I am sooooooo disappointed also. But be glad you didn't get the colors I got. Scrubby is black, the cotton one is black. One is speckled with black, dingy white and grey. The striped is dingy white, dingy dark purple and dingy light purple. 🤢 Sorry you got duped twice!!! I am seriously thinking about canceling the subscription. 😢

I have to say i have never liked mary maxim ( i live maybe an hour away from a store in Ontario) so many kits you cant exchange colours or you cant get the pattern without the kit...so yeah not on my radar at all

Sorry about your bad experience with mary maxim. But you shouldn't feel bad for giving an honest review. And, you are braver than i am i wouldn't order from them again if. 8 were you . I have seen othe mary maxim reviews as well, i wont buy from them ever. Never have
