WHAT YOU CAN DO WHEN THE TOILET FLANGE OPENING IS TOO BIG (5" TOILET FLANGE).

  • This is a way to solve the problem when the original 4 inch closet bend pipe in the flange was not brought up to the proper level. I have seen people refer to this situation as having a "5 inch flange" when they're trying to figure it out and they don't understand plumbing. We plumbers know there's no such thing as a 5 inch toilet flange. The 4 inch pipe is supposed to be brought up to the same level as the flange or slightly proud so you have a nice wide, positive seat for your wax ring or whatever seal you choose to use. It's a pretty common problem and this is the way that I deal with it.
Also, if you have an ABS flange that has this problem, with the pipe not being brought up to the same level as the top of the flange, you can do the same thing. Just glue the short piece of ABS pipe inside the flange to bring it up to the proper level and that works great in that situation.
I have been using the Fluidmaster "better than wax" seal on 90% or more of the toilets I install and I get great results with those. Sometimes if they just don't fit right or if the flange is way out of level or there are other factors, sometimes I will use standard wax.

Thanks for uploading this. Ran into this today with the notorious NE Philly leak in main bath. Found the 4 main supplies you used at HD for 40$ had to buy a 2’ pice of 4”. Leak is repaired, looked like the last install used about 3-4 wax rings. This seems like a much better option. 👍🏼

Was wondering if you can just jam the spacer in there

Yes. Center the spacer within the existing pipe and fill in any gaps with the mastic. Ideally, you would give the mastic some time to dry if you can.

If the spacer is already tight anyway, then you'll be fine.
