    I bought 3 TP-Link Matter/WiFi bulbs, 3 TP-Link Matter/WiFi plugs, and 3 NanoLeaf Matter/Thread bulbs to give Matter and Thread a try. I was motivated to do this when I realized that the Feit smart bulbs and plugs that I purchased from Costco are dependent on the Internet to work. I have had all kinds of problems getting my devices to stay available. They seem to be settling down over time. My big test was when I unplugged my modem to see if I could control the devices. That's when I learned that Google Home and Google Assistant appear to be dependent on the Internet meaning I could not control any of the devices. I need to check if I can control them via their apps. A follow-up video regarding Matter without Internet would be great.

    Nice! Not everyone can just set up a smart home. Hopefully matter smart devices will solve that problem 🙂

    Seems like more of a mess using Matter. Can you demonstrate how Google can control wifi devices when the internet is down? That would be a game changer.

    • @MarkMcGuireD

      Wouldn’t that require thread?

    • @Ndlelex
      @Ndlelex 7 месяцев назад +2

      It would probably work; you don't need to be internet enabled to have local devices liaise through wifi. Also, Thread and Matter are not interchangeable terms; it is as much possible to have thread without matter as it is to have matter without thread. Depending on the device, thread or wifi could be used as a comms channel for it to speak Matter with another device (you can speak English with me using email or telephone, as an analogy).

    Can you voice controll the light bulb just by it self or you need another thing for it?

    I'm pretty sure a thread border router and a matter controller are not the same thing, even though they can be in the same device. A thread border router is just a router that connects Thread devices to your normal Wifi/ethernet network. A matter controller runs the server that Wifi and Thread matter devices actually talk to.

      If you set the device up in the manufactures app, you can then find a matter code on the settings of the device.

    Few months late with this question but in Gwen's room where you setup the light switch. You didn't mention it but curious what kind of bulbs you are using because that dimming doesn't work on regular bulbs. So the bulbs you are using would also have to be setup correct? And if yes then why do you need the switch?

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  7 месяцев назад

      That is actually a smart switch with dimming capability, so I don't need smart bulbs. The bulbs in the fixture are just normal dimmable LED bulbs.

    Can any dimmer light switch be used as a ceiling fan switch?

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  7 месяцев назад

      No, I would look for specific devices that are able to control fan speed or are fan supported. You can also find rf modules that have a remote that add this function.

    I was reading it up, it seems you can skip the hub thing in the new ios18 update and directly control the peripheral from the homekit app. Not sure if Google Home already has this? 🤔

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  3 месяца назад

      Yes, Matter allows you to connect directly to Apple Home if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer with iOS 18.

      @TechWithBrett  4 месяца назад

      Sorry if I didn't say that correctly, but Google says, "Some Matter controllers can also be Thread border routers. For example, Amazon and Google have updated their Wi-Fi routers to be both Matter controllers and Thread border routers."

    It's a pity that you didn't automate with 2 different companies, for example, once door sensor from mi and one from the lamp from the tplink when the door opens, the light goes on etc.

    So I cannot simply use the Matter Plug and the Phone itself, I need to also buy the "Hub" separately - what a bad thing....
    I mean why not to simply allow the direct connection from the device (Matter plug) to the Phone , without the need to buy something extra...(hub). I have exactly 1 device , which i need to connect , not the "Full house of IOT device" , I don't need the Hub....

      @@TechWithBrett Hi , just feedback on my question. I am back from holiday and my house sitter was not able to use the Google Home App to view security cameras and doorbell . When I "left the home" my google account that is linked to the Nest account was disconnected from the "home" do all the cameras became nearly useless, 🤦‍♂I then had to spend hours reconnecting them when I returned🤦‍♂Next time I go away it might be easier to have her just turn off the cameras that are disturbing her privacy, like in the kitchen or doorbell. I didnt want to be notified everytime she had a visitor . I wish nest and home were one thing not a weird mish mash. Any way , thanks for the work you do, love your channel.

      Oh no Brett! Sorry you had to go through. I was wondering if that was a risk. Yeah that might be the best thing to do or even show they are unplugged for indoor cameras. Thank you for teaching me this time.

    I have identical time triggered routines/automations in Alexa and Google Home. The Alexa routine runs reliably every day, whereas the Google one runs some days and not on others. There are many people complaining about the same thing. Google's answer: reboot device and check wifi setting. Rubbish, it's a Google problem. No point in buying a Nest Hub with this happening.

      I have a similar issue, I have 34 lights connected to google home with matter, about every two hours I have anywhere from 5 lights- all of them saying they’re unavailable.
      I have another app call AiDot, connect the lights the same way. I haven’t had one issue. Smart hints is the same way. It’s purely a google home issue

    Im still not convinced matter will matter long term.
    The utopia matter purports to market,ie you will no longer need multiple apps on your phone doesnt match up with the reality that smart device manufacturers need to differentiate themselves.
    If i can get all features on a google home hub , why would i spend money on premium devices with great feature sets.
    It just seems to be a race to the bottom on prices and lack of features to me.
    In the matter utopia i dont see an incentive for device makers to innovate.

    You failed to tell all of us, that we actually need a matter hub that actually works locally especially when the Internet goes down!!! 👎🏽😡
    No Google hubs can do control locally, they are NOT matter compliant... I dare you to use a Google Hub when the internet goes down!!!
    And you lied about not having to download all the apps because yes you do because matter does not completely control all the aspects of the devices. Only the apps do!!! You failed us once again...
