I've yet to hear anyone explain convincingly why we are not on the mountain lion menu. Unless they've been hunted, can't imagine why they would fear us.
Mountain lions in my area seldom attack people as they have ample prey. Usually, they posture and bluff to chase you out of their territory if they don't just run off. In my experience, they just run away and don't look back.
If you are going to do anything outdoors in bear and mountain lion country, have a firearm. Its not about politics. Its about the safety of you and the people around you. Its better to be strapped than to end up being a stat.
I have heard of a solution for mountain lions that makes perfect sense some years ago, and perhaps it would also work on bears. Make sure you always carry a stick. If a cat takes an interest in you: swing that stick back and forth fast enough to make the whoosh sound. Apparently, the cat will stare at that stick as if the stick made that noise, then run off confused by that unusual (to wildlife) noise. We humans are the only specie in the U.S. that can make that noise. I imagine that any ape specie can likewise make that noise, but there are none of those here.
I live in the Rockies and in my area you are more likely to get kicked by a Mule Deer than attacked by a bear or cougar. We have a small herd that likes to hang out in my yard and get on my porch for some reason. I've barreled out of my front door and almost ran face first into a 6 point buck just standing there ... and the last hunter I heard of getting killed by an animal got killed by a deer. The bears are more interested in trying to get into the dumpster than attacking people.
lol yes. Mule deer are so stupid. You can practically walk up to them and yell and most don't even care. And that's not even rut. Totally different than whitetail. I think there is a lot of 'fascination fear' with bears and cougars that isn't always warranted. All you have to do is try and hunt one and you'll find out just how much they don't want to be anywhere near you.
I just want to expand on the video. Personality and breed of the bear matter too. If that bear is approaching you, head hung low, ears back, and you can tell it's not inquisitive? It's likely looking at you like food. There's not much you can do here but yell, scream, slam sticks, and as the video states - look not worth the calories it'll take to fight you. However if a bear is displaying more passive signs, the best thing you can do is make yourself large, quietly and calmly speak to the bear as you back away and out of sight and risk. Bear awareness should be taught in schools. The training is great and I strongly suggest people volunteer for it.
In 1990 on the Louisiana side of the Sabine River in DeSoto Parish I saw a black panther one evening right before sunset. I was riding an ATV and it ran across the dirt road I was riding on and crossed only about 15 feet away. I got a very clear look at it and was amazed! They insist these big cats don`t exist but there are literally thousands of sightings in the USA and even Canada. When I first moved there from Central Louisiana the locals told me about the big black cats. The local high school football team is called the Stanley Panthers and a town nearby named Keachie is a Native American word meaning black cat. I had noticed the huge cat tracks in the area that were WAAAY larger than bobcat tracks and feel very fortunate to have seen one of these mythical creatures. I later moved from the river to town and a guy who knew my dad sent word to me that he`d seen the big black cat in the exact same area while hunting from his deer stand, which confirmed to me that I wasn`t hallucinating, and he promised he wouldn`t hurt it. Type in "BLACK PANTHER SIGHTING MISSISSIPPI" on RUclips and read the comments under the video. There are multiple witness stories.
Do you have problems with wild boar there in LA? They have become a huge problem in Texas, where some of my family live. They are really dangerous and can get enormous! They don't belong here. They were brought from Asia as prey in canned hunts for rich a-holes who didn't care about the consequences of allowing an invasive, dangerous species to proliferate. The Russian boars have crossed with the native wild hogs and even domestic types to breed monstrosities.
You mentioned two things that don't make sense to me. 1. That 99% of the time a mountain lion will run away if you make a lot of noise and get big. I've never faced a mountain lion but I've seen videos where people did and every time the mountain lion was not fazed one bit by the person shouting and getting big. The lions were so calm, focused and determined. So I don't understand your statement with this. 2. Why do you say you don't see mountain lions as a threat. They are afraid of nothing. They are incredibly fast and agile. Have you had encounters with lions and if so how did it go?
I saw one a few weeks ago. It was less than a hundred feet away and we made contact and it gave me a kinda confused and indifferent look and then just walked away, it was walking pretty fast almost jogging. Insanely beautiful creature.
"That may come in handy" - but i'm askin myself - can you scare a predator away with a ferro rod ? striking sparks against it - not throwing at it.......... Question from Germany PS: Really like you upload all your Episodes - "Money cant buy experience" - as I wrote to Mr. Pearson lately
I've lost quite a few of my goats to pit bull type dogs. People dump them up here on the mountain when they can't handle their vicious dogs so they become someone else's problem.
Bears, Deer, Groundhogs, Mountain Lions, etc, use roads and trails, even way out in the woods, it's easier walking for them too, bear for navigating up/down/sidehill..deer walk trails and roads for the open-ness from predators. "People think a Park Trail has a safety net" lol.
"Hopefully, 99.9999 of the time it's gonna take off". Tell me that you've never encountered a mountain lion without telling me that you've never encountered a mountain lion.
That doesn’t seem right. Plenty of videos out there where they stalk along in the middle open roads for long periods before deciding to bluff pounce, which could very easily turn into a real attack before you can even react or determine their state of mind, if you feel you are some sort wildlife psychoanalyst. Something like a bear stopper or high powered pistol type of firearm might be the only realistic option in that scenario, if trying to discourage them with body language isn’t effective. I imagine this scenario is just as plausible and maybe even more likely as seeing them coming out of a tree before you could get a shot off and are forced into trying to use a blade of some type, which sounds absurd.
Yeah, but he's talking about people who want to go out without the need to kill everything that threatens them. I hunt just as much as the next guy, but why blast everything that scares you, especially when they just want to be left alone? And btw, unless you can prove that it was actively coming after you, you'll get fined big time for shooting a mountain lion without a tag. I've seen a lot of long investigations all because someone was scared and shot a mountain lion because their adrenaline was pumping.
Did bro just accidentally admit a face off with either of those predators would mean his death? “I got my knife, I’m not going down without a fight..” nigga it’s a bear

The episodes on Amazon prime look better quality than the ones here, but I still watch both hah
Right on Les.
I have a rug that's always Lion around, is it dangerous ???
The guy struggling with that mother cougar works for a knife company!! How he was without a blade I'll never know
You mentioned two things that don't make sense to me.
That 99% he’s talking about is a black bear, not a mountain lion.
You won’t hear from those who had encountered one. They’ve been chewed up, swallowed and pooped out.
I saw one a few weeks ago. It was less than a hundred feet away and we made contact and it gave me a kinda confused and indifferent look and then just walked away, it was walking pretty fast almost jogging. Insanely beautiful creature.
When they run away it isn't worth showing...it does work sometimes
"That may come in handy" - but i'm askin myself - can you scare a predator away with a ferro rod ? striking sparks against it - not throwing at it..........
Question from Germany
PS: Really like you upload all your Episodes - "Money cant buy experience" - as I wrote to Mr. Pearson lately
I’m surprised les hasn’t had a lot more altercations with wild animals, he sleeps outside on a lot of occasions, im very surprised
You think they are open to negotiation?
Have you heard of a story years ago 97' Sept. 7th ...a man fighting off a cougar with a fishing rod?that guy was me like to know more?
fitting video. Lions blamed for eating chickens and a Bull Terrier in our hood last week.
How large are your blades?? Thanks
Bear spray is a very good deterrent.
Sounds like he needs to pack a Taurus Judge.
The mountain Lion watching you make this video 🧐
Yep, I never hit the trails without my pot and ladle at the ready.
🤣
Hell ya
id like to see his theory done live on video lol
"Hopefully, 99.9999 of the time it's gonna take off". Tell me that you've never encountered a mountain lion without telling me that you've never encountered a mountain lion.
@@goodday126 ive never seen a koala or a dingo,in the wild
Doesn't consider a mountain lion a danger.... Les has obviously never survived in RDR2..
big cat?...THROW SOMETHING...the opposable thumbs trick!...works every time---so far
I hear that bear spray works...
Carry bear spray!
I love Les, but I think that I have a better way to deal with the animals. A big bore firearm can help even more than a stick.
@@patrickdewhurst3378 It's my word against the dead lion's.

Did bro just accidentally admit a face off with either of those predators would mean his death? “I got my knife, I’m not going down without a fight..” nigga it’s a bear

Do not go silent into that predator's belly.
Cougar mountain 🦁 lion in the middle of the night stalking
It's gonna be very angry When hungry & can't rip the head.

As a mountain lion, I find this video deeply problematic and uninformed.
large loud
A knife 😂😂😂😂 against a bear or mountain lion????😂😂😂
Okay buddy .
Get. . 500 or .45 or .44
People have killed mountain lions with their bare hands, unarmed women fight them off. Les Stroud with that knife would survive it 90 percent of the time. Glad we got your expert opinion though.
lol out of breath just narrating
Or... you could just stay home and leave the animals alone.
