Actually this interview takes place after his accident. You can tell he’s getting interviewed about his film, and his accident took place months before ANH even hit theaters
He's still very well spoken. I think it's because he's been around. His dad was a naval officer so he's lived in a lot of places, and he's picked up a well rounded worldview I think. But obviously a certain amount is just given to him, some people are naturals
Maybe that accounts for Linehan being a little flustered at the beginning of the segment with Ford and it's the only time I've ever seen that happen with his otherwise calm, composed demeanor.
I'm astonished everytime I see him that young. He has that pureness and innocence (back then and still today) combined with some kind of relaxed serenity. And everything crowned with positive vibration.
I must say. The high standards and quality of interviews back then are sorely missed. What passes for Interviews these days ( insert talk show) is absolute garbage.
Male celebrities usually hold eye contact with interviewers for 2 or 3 seconds at a time with long intervals of looking elsewhere in between. But Mark locks eye contact for extended periods. To me, this signals that he's very open and engaged in the present moment. No shit Sherlock. Wait... did I just insult my own comment in my own comment? Hmmm... ok.
Yes she was.... so sad what drugs and alcohol do to the body.... it prematurely ages you. She was 60 at her death and looked 75.... she was beautiful. Her daughter Billie is pretty too but I think looks nothing like her......
I was turning 12, my older brother brought me to see Star Wars before my birthday. I fell in love and saw it a total of 13 times in the theater. I was a complete geek from the getgo.
"Star Wars" continues to be my FAVORITE movie of all time! I was so sad when Mark was injured filming "Corvette Summer". I'm glad he continued acting afterwards.
Tbf he was 35 when a new hope was released. Ford found fame quite late in comparison to most of actors and actresses. He's always looked 40 because he almost was 40 when he became famous lol.
This interviewer is intelligent, informed, and knows a hell of a lot about his subjects. The one thing he lacks is a sense of form. His interviews are a lot of random questions that don't lead his subjects progressively from one related topic to another - so they seem a bit startled at times by the sudden switch of focus. Hamill is even surprised that their time is up, even though seven minutes is a fairly usual slot for this kind of interview. If Linehan had led him naturally to a conclusion, Hamill could have seen it coming, and finished with some kind of summation. But that's all denied - a shame because these years will never come again.
Brian Linehan wasn't the typical interviewer. He was meticulously prepared and did his homework on each subject. He engaged in conversation, rather than formulaic interviews. The reason why Hamill was so surprised that the interview was over because he was engaged in an interesting conversation that he enjoyed. The other thing about the seemingly random questions is that by varying the questions, going from professional to personal and back again, he kept the subject slightly off balance so as to provoke genuine reactions and answers. If the subject is too prepared, you don't get as genuine an answer. And Linehan was very skilled at how he did it - never alienating the subject, but engaging them. Look at how he got Harrison Ford to open up personally like he did - that's a rare feat, and Ford was notoriously more difficult an interview in his younger years than when he got older. Not coincidentally, Linehan was a favorite by many celebrities for his interviews - not because he was easy, but because the conversations were deeper and more interesting.
Interesting how Carrie Fisher says “Its time for that anti-hero thing to take a back seat” when now lots of films are going back to that now. And like she also says, films are meant for escape. Interesting how a lot of films are unfortunately not doing that anymore too.
10:07 i do think there are alot of similarities between George and luke skywalker. They're both very resilient. George got put through shit while making star wars but never gave up. Same goes for Luke. Also in 1977 Mark and George looked very similar: their heights, bodies and everything else.
This is one of Nardwuars inspiration to do interviews (in his unique way). Brian Linehan always does deep research. You can see Carrie Fisher wanting to see all of Linehans notes.
You would think that Mark Hamill, looking the way he does, would display a shy, reserved, and gothic personality similar to that of a rock star. But he’s very likeable and charismatic like Cary Grant or Elvis.
I'm certain that car crash, and the facial damage it inflicted, was the reason Hamill's film career went nowhere after Star Wars. The difference in looks between SW and Empire is considerable. So glad he got back to the big leagues with the new trilogy, regardless of quality.
Even in esb and rotj he was very handsome. I think really he enjoys voice acting, he's got a part in the new Hayao Miyazaki film, and he's considered prestigious among voice actors.
This was just before Mark Hamill started work on "Corvette Summer," referred to here as its original title, "Stingray," during which he crashed and wrecked his face.
Yeah, I see on wikipedia that you're right. That's really weird, because his face looks dramatically different in ESB compared to this video, but his description of the injuries seems so minor.
It's a shame the URL has to be so high up on the video. What is the point of sharing this if you obscure it. A watermark in the corner (like they do on television) would have been a better idea. This is sadly just a commercial. Carrie Fisher (as does Hamill and Ford) deserves better than this.
Apocalypse Now, ironically also. A George Lucas project which he had planned to film in VietNam during the war. He turned it over to his pal Francis Ford Coppola and Harrison Ford, from Lucas's American Graffiti, had a part. The main character is Benjamin Willard.
