Launch Steam then launch Steam VR. Next go to Setting, then Video and look for Enable Custom Resolution and make sure to check the box. Then a slider will appear and you can adjustment the resolution above 100%. I use 130-140%. Cleans up the image and still runs smooth.

What the hell is going on with the image at 6.20. Something is way off on the Rift S, it is loosing detail of the ship too much. Turning black.
@@TheBaldrickk Its actually the most accurate out of the three headsets. Look at this video, ruclips.net/video/RLIBabGOclo/видео.html. You will see that the game is much darker.
For anyone that’s used the vive does the black bar actually flow down the screen, I might be purchasing a vive soon so I wanna know if it’s just the camera
Question to Tyriel or anyone. Why didn't the Rift S show all the orange colors of the spaceship like the other two headsets did? What is that Spaceship from, or what game? just curious.
Very dark screen on Oculus rift s, is there a way to pop it up a little? Do a refresh rate test on a driving simulator 80hz I don't think is going to be good for it or fast moving objects.
Tks man for this comparision, great work. Nevertheless, the text photo of the Samsung Ody+ text it's not in the correct angle, we can see some chromatic aberration due to this, the photo doesn't seem taken on the sweet spot
This is spectacular for the Index. Index having the Vive Pro's resolution with the same (or I assume it's the same?) subpixel layout as the Rift S (Which has a marginally lower resolution) is rad.
Actually the rift s with its LCD looks the best, which actually makes me even more excited for my Valve Index with also has LCD and the Vive Pro resolution. Also I feel like LCD will be less straining on the eyes for longer play sessions
There are quite a few games that you can modify the contrast and color, anyway rift s has not come out and surely updates will be released throughout his life to correct all your problems.
Am I crazy or does the Rift S have much better clarity? Like the difference in the comparison of the menu in Elite Dangerous is night and day compared to the other headsets.
Great video. To me, the Vive pro wins hands down. The price is high, but for a quality monger like myself, it seem near worth the extra cost. If It could afford it. The Odyssey Plus seems to be the next best thing for price and quality, and no prob to set up. The Rift S looks nice, and likely much better to view in person with it on, but it looked overall darker in this video then the other two, making you miss some extra details. I would go with the Vive if I had the cash for it.
The Vive Pro is outdated tech; if you want a look at the best displays on the market, take a peak at the valve index! Same display tech as the rift S, but in far higher resolution, a vastly higher field of view and with dual stacked lenses per eye for screen door effect elimination and clarity.

Can you do a video on mobility as well? I’ve seen vids that show tracking on the RiftS is bad (lose tracking) and could make or break for competitive gaming.
Which videos? Every video I've seen has said that the tracking is really good and much better than expected and that the only game with any issues is echo vr and even then it is rare that it is much of a problem
It has a better tracking volume so better high speed reaction passing motions behind your back still work in software if done quick but depending on the game you play I would say give it a shot and ship it back in 30 days if it's not up to standard.
Correct me if this is not possible. Can the Rift s having a smaller resolution but have better clarity than the Vive pro and Odyssey plus because the quality over quantity of pixels is better?
AMOLED screens(Odyssey+ and Vive Pro) has 2 subpixels per pixel. LCD screens(Rift S) has 3 subpixels per pixel. 2880x1600x2 = 9,216,000 subpixels for Odyssey+ and Vive Pro. 2560x1440x3 = 11,059,200 subpixels for the Rift S.
Very good video Tyriel on comparing these 3 VR headsets all 3 are not bad. To me it looks like the Rift S is pretty good with Text compared than the other two especially with the Big Text test screen. I dont know why the Rift S didn't fill/show more in the Orange colors with the space ship like the other two VR headsets did. With Assetto Corsa video with the cars moving, It looked like the Vive and Odyssey+ colors looked better,brighter-The Rift S seemed to look darker and not as clear as the other 2 Headsets when doing the 2 games this time. I am surprised with the blacks with the Rift S are darker than I thought they would be(very close to the other two VR headsets). I dont know if actually putting on the headset looking through the lenses would even look better than your camera captures. It will be interesting when I do my own compares with the Rift S vs my Odyssey+ so, Right now, I mainly do SIM racing with the Odyssey+ and also like the Visuals I get the headset. The only 2 things that still wondering about the Rift S compared to my Odyssey+, who has the larger FOV? and with the Rift S since I have an IPD of 60, how good does the software adjust align my eyes to the sweet spot. I will know soon when I get my Rift S which is on pre-order. So the Rift S is looking pretty good with your comparisons against the Odyssey+ and Vive Pro. Need to watch this video a few times more to get a feel of what I am seeing also on my 4k monitor screen down stairs hooked to my gaming computer. I know if you did a comparison to the HP Reverb, the Reverb will have way better resolutions than all of these, but I dont think I have the computer horsepower even with my GTX-1080 to get all the benefits that the HP Reverb has to offer.
Hey Tyriel, do you think Samsung is coming out with something soon that will be a game changer again? They seem to like to be the better company. I wish the Odyssey came with 4 cameras at the time and the Odyssey + was a lot more comfortable than it was. I can't decide to get the index or those controllers yet for I think there will be something better by the end of this year or next year.
The Rift S is slightly clearer in some shots (at least where it's in focus compared to the others) but I think the Vive Pro actually had the nicest overall image here.
Are people looking at the same video as me? The rifts seemed to loose out on nearly all aspects appart from fine text. Lack of contrast and brightness really had failing points
Odyssey Plus all the way, so smooth and realistic, colors and anti SDE, not to mention 90hz and better built in audio than rift s, cheaper on amazon now too.
I tested those VR headsets at a local electronics store today, the Rift felt like the most sensible to me. And on sale, around 360 €. That's a pretty good deal imo.
Could you please provide commentary about how they compare in real world use. While these comparisons are fantastic, things like exposure and the camera you took the pictures can make it differ from real world use. It seems like the black levels on the Rift s are better than the Vive Pro, but that doesn't really make sense. Also, is the Red spaceship model the same between the Rift S, Vive Pro, and Odyssey? On the Rift S it is black in the center and certainly looks much different.
I sold my Odyssey + to upgrade to the HP Reverb, but unsure about the mura etc. After seeing this video, I want to know if the display is as clear as the Odyssey? They both have 600~ DPI, but no where I have searched tells me what size the panels are in the Rift S. Anyone know? Thanks.
@@drivinginmorocco4706 I own a Rift S now. Posted some pics on Oculus forum for everyone to see. Pretty impressive display with the extra sub pixels. So to answer my own question, it is better than the Odyssey + in many ways.
hmm at first i was like wow rift plus looks great for text then onto game play its the worst lol how does that work ?? either way ill be using my odessy plus for a few more years till the come out with something that is major leap forward and not 1-5k
Amazed at how awesome the s looks. But what was up with the orange ship at the 6min mark? That was the only clip where the s looked awful! No detail, just a dark silhouette?
People were so worried about the lcd display with the Rift S and honestly I think the Rift s has the best blacks and colors. It’s amazing for just 400$ the vive pro is waaay overpriced. I’d rather get the new Valve index than that shit.
I think the Rift S has a lot more realistic colours. The Vive and Odyssey look like they are doing something to the colours which makes them look fake, but the resolution is way better; but even then, the Rift S still has way better text reading.

You got that the wrong way. In this test the Rift S is fucked up in its colors look at 6.20... it is like it is using a completely different shader there.
I'm getting a Quest but if I was going PCVR there is no doubt that I would be getting the Rift S. It either holds it's own or is better than all the other PCVR headsets I have seen comparisons to and it's way cheaper with no base stations needed. How it would compare to the Index, I dunno but that is 600 dollars more that the Rift S! Is it better? Probably but 600 bucks worth of better? I doubt it!
Great video! Vive pro is sharp but has SDE, Odyssey + looks blurry, Rift s less resolution but much less SDE without being too blurry. Leaning toward the Rift S as it will be less taxing on my system, its cheaper, easier to set up, good support, good controllers etc. One question: Why is the Rift S video so much darker than the other two?
Rift S doesn't have as much brightness because it's an LCD panel. The other two are using OLED panels, which have brighter colors and deeper blacks. The tradeoff is that the LCD panel has better subpixel density and so offers better overall clarity. Personally, I wouldn't say either is "best" because it greatly depends on the specific games you intend to play. I prefer the OLED displays for space games, but prefer the LCD panel for racing games. Ultimately, you gotta weigh the pros and cons to decide which gives you the better experience personally, most likely according to the games you'll play most. Everyone will prefer different things depending on what is more important to them after all.
@@HealyHQ Yeah I do know about the LCD difference, but Im not talking about depth of color or black. I mean like the whole image looks like the gamma is set wrong and there is black crush. Like the spaceship at the end looks black on the Oculus without a lot of detail, where as the other two are clearly red with detail. Like that but in every one of the comparison videos.

Oculus Rift S has very nice lenses quality, very low chromatic aberration, sharper on the center and also in the corners. I'm going to order one today, waited too much to try VR :-)
Good vid.. Gotta say though, it's odd how the Vive Pro and Odyssey+ look washed out here compared to the Rift S. With the Rift S apparently (in this vid) offering better contrast and black levels? Seems odd because one would expect quite the opposite would be true, considering their respective display technologies.
Nice comparison! Thanks for that. I sim race mostly and I'm really digging the Rift S over the Odyssey + in this comparison. Rift S has better clarity and easier on your eyes even though the screen resolution isn't as good as the Odyssey +. Also with lower screen resolution we will be able to run higher SS without taxing our GPU's as much. Looks like I'll be getting the Rift S. Thanks again
Exactly, mainly sim racing use too. People seem to have forgotten the second part of the fidelity equation, which is AA implementation, detail settings, super sampling etc, it's never been about pure pixel pushing. I went for the Rift S for those reasons, leaving myself plenty of headroom for in game goodies plus inside out giving me a simple transition to try other experiences as opposed to that sensor stuck on top of the rig.
@@numbersevenhull2540 So Im in the market to get a headset purely for simracing. I think you are making a good point on the pixel pushing. I take it for a pimax this is even more of an issue? On that topic, is the pimax any good for simracing?
@@MVHStudios Don't go with the pimax, take that one off your list. View Windows headsets with some caution as its messy with drivers etc, oculus much better and user friendly. I don't think you can beat the S for value and what you get, it's a big step up from the CV1 for sim racing. Love mine. As a first VR headset I'm not sure you can go wrong with it.

I know this vid is a bit old but its worth mentioning that the Vive Pro is defaulted in Steam at 140% Super Sampling. Where as the Odyssey+ is defaulted at 100%. If you turn up the SS on the Odyssey+ to 140% it looks as good if not better the the Vive Pro with less screen door effect.
Just curious, where are the settings for the ss?
Launch Steam then launch Steam VR. Next go to Setting, then Video and look for Enable Custom Resolution and make sure to check the box. Then a slider will appear and you can adjustment the resolution above 100%. I use 130-140%. Cleans up the image and still runs smooth.
What the hell is going on with the image at 6.20. Something is way off on the Rift S, it is loosing detail of the ship too much. Turning black.
Definitely Exposure - either camera settings changed, or the screen is just darker.
@@TheBaldrickk Its actually the most accurate out of the three headsets. Look at this video, ruclips.net/video/RLIBabGOclo/видео.html. You will see that the game is much darker.
Will Oculus follow the same model lettering as TESLA and go for "S 3 X Y" lol ;)
I ordered a RIFT S so I get warranty on the cable.
For anyone that’s used the vive does the black bar actually flow down the screen, I might be purchasing a vive soon so I wanna know if it’s just the camera
Honestly they all look pretty close. Much better than the original Rift and Vive.
Can we get a comparison next to the Pimax VR headsets next?
I just wanna say, That i LOVE these videos. I am a member of some VR groups and i always refer them to these videos for buying new headsets. Thank you
Why is the Rift so dark in ED?
Question to Tyriel or anyone. Why didn't the Rift S show all the orange colors of the spaceship like the other two headsets did? What is that Spaceship from, or what game? just curious.
What is the FOV like wearing the Rift S? Is it any better than a WMR or original Rift?
Text is rendered so much clearer, plus it seems like there is more depth to the blacks.
I have the rift s but text get blurt after a few meters away is this due to the resolution of the headset or game
Very dark screen on Oculus rift s, is there a way to pop it up a little? Do a refresh rate test on a driving simulator 80hz I don't think is going to be good for it or fast moving objects.
Is there a through lens video comparison of Quest vs O+?
No bullshit, straight to picture quality comparison in great format. Excellent!
Can you please give us your opinion on the black levels in very dark games and if its comparable to the rift or a clear downgrade?
Thank you!!
Would be very interesting to have a comparison between the Quest, the Rift S and the Go
Wow, thanks! Super happy I went for Rift S! 🎉😁🍻
Me too! 😄👋 []-)
Same! And without external sensors to boot!
And very at very affordable price
Samee no external sensors!!!
Great comparison.... sadly the song is getting old
It's basically Anti-SDE (Samsung Odyssey) or Image Clarity (Oculus Rift S)... Kinda hard to pick one.
Rift S owner. Screen is very clean and sharp SDE is not a concern at all. Completely happy with how everything looks.
what did u pick ?
@@triaxn5472 Neither... they both cost too much. lol
7:17 was not expecting that kind of clarity from the Rift S. Nice Surprise.
Tks man for this comparision, great work. Nevertheless, the text photo of the Samsung Ody+ text it's not in the correct angle, we can see some chromatic aberration due to this, the photo doesn't seem taken on the sweet spot
The sweet spot is too small though
Oculus rift s looking good
I was going to get the discontinued htc vive but i should get rift s?
how come the airplane on the rift s was black
I think every 3 of them looks really good but I'm gona go with the odyssey +
Can we assume that the Valve Index image quality will be similar to that of the Vive Pro since they use a similar panel?
No, they don't at all use a similar panel. The Index uses an LCD panel that's more similar to the Rift S, but with a wider FOV and higher refresh rate
Paulo Alex oliveira no, you are wrong..it is much better... it has more subpixels like the rift s
This is spectacular for the Index. Index having the Vive Pro's resolution with the same (or I assume it's the same?) subpixel layout as the Rift S (Which has a marginally lower resolution) is rad.
What supersampling settings do you use?
As someone who just upgraded from rift to rift s. It is a significant upgrade. Very much worth it
Actually the rift s with its LCD looks the best, which actually makes me even more excited for my Valve Index with also has LCD and the Vive Pro resolution. Also I feel like LCD will be less straining on the eyes for longer play sessions
Rift s has sharp display but the color and contrast not good enough, Is there a software adjustment for color and contrast with the Rift s ?!
Awesome comparison Tyriel. I'm shocked the Rift S' lenses are that good! Waiting for my Rift S to arrive and try it out!
So glad I ordered the Rift S, seems like the best display of every available headset.
The Vive Pro is outdated tech; if you want a look at the best displays on the market, take a peak at the valve index! Same display tech as the rift S, but in far higher resolution, a vastly higher field of view and with dual stacked lenses per eye for screen door effect elimination and clarity.
@@hightoxicity9819 Thanks, I will give the Index a look when it's released. Rift S is my first VR display, seemed like a good place to start out.
everyone was sleeping on the Rift S
still am, it's not very impressive
Why such difference in bloom in Elite Dangerous?
Got email this morning to say my Rift S was being preped for posting and delivery...yay can't wait
And I have to wait till June for my Rift S to finally arrive...
@@TheLauriLepik well when did you preorder it lol as with all new stuff they are bound to only have so many made and allotted for launch. I went onto oculus website it was not listed but litterally second Slater refreshed and it had litterally just been listed so that will be why I was a lucky one
I'm in the UK and I think places like Amazon must have been given a certain amount they could sell and the customers would get on launch day from them a d then the rest would get them in June just like from oculus own site
Though I did notice something odd...when prorders went live on oculus UK....they did not go live on Amazon UK till at least 1 hr later lol
Because of lcd panels instead of OLED display.
AMOLED screens(Odyssey+ and Vive Pro) has 2 subpixels per pixel.
LCD screens(Rift S) has 3 subpixels per pixel.
2880x1600x2 = 9,216,000 subpixels for Odyssey+ and Vive Pro.
2560x1440x3 = 11,059,200 subpixels for the Rift S.
Rift S definitely have fixed most of the SDE, something that vive pro should have done first
Wow the Rift S is pretty clear, especially with reading text.
The Rift S is slightly clearer in some shots (at least where it's in focus compared to the others) but I think the Vive Pro actually had the nicest overall image here.
uh
I thought the pro looked the worst and not even by a little bit, but see what you wanna I guess.
Are people looking at the same video as me? The rifts seemed to loose out on nearly all aspects appart from fine text. Lack of contrast and brightness really had failing points
Vive Pro is superior. Sharp image, vibrant colors. less sde than rift S
The eye chart is the best. Vive is like when I don't have my glasses on, Odyssey is like my old prescription, Rift S is like my new prescription.
👀
Odyssey Plus all the way, so smooth and realistic, colors and anti SDE, not to mention 90hz and better built in audio than rift s, cheaper on amazon now too.
Own a original rift cv1 and Samsung odessey plus. VR is fun . I'm eagerly waiting for a huge improvement before I'll be upgrading again though.
Are you happy with your Odyssey?
I tested those VR headsets at a local electronics store today, the Rift felt like the most sensible to me. And on sale, around 360 €. That's a pretty good deal imo.
A friend of mine has an odessey... He played rift s and immediately placed his preorder and is selling his odessey.
I preordered mine too, I'm excited bro
@@Jay-vf8ue he had to interest in the s until he actually used it
i dont have that luxury your rich friend has.. im staying with the odyssey
@@GeloOfficialPR it's only $399 compared to $500
@@Jay-vf8ue lol ... the odyssey has been on sale for 249 multiple times... i got mine for 200$ used
Could you please provide commentary about how they compare in real world use.
Thanks.
Not just picture make difference, oculus touch are awsome controllers.
Terrific comparison. Can't wait for the rift s to arrive!!
Cmon... Vive Pro al the way...
I just am not sure if I want to spend 2x more for index instead of S... what is fingertracking good for if all You do is hold a gun
hiczok Those times when you need to reload said gun.
I already have WMR headset the lenovo one, Should i upgrade to the rift S?
If it's better why not
@@sasukeuchiha562 well because i do really like my WMR reality headset i was wondering ive it is a upgrade because the resolution is almost the same and i know the tracking is better but is it worth it
@@wesleyhere18 dose your headset have the inside tracking? I've done enough research on the tracking for the oculus rift s and I'll say its alrite. If you dont like it you can always return them on Amazon:D
@@sasukeuchiha562 Yeah WMR also uses insight out tracking and the oculus rift S has allot better tracking and controllers, and its true i could always return them but for me its not that i won't like the headset.i am not sure ive its woth to upgrade because for me to affort it i have to sell this headset first.
@@wesleyhere18 are you happy with the tracking on your headset?
there is no way of knowing which one is better unless you try them all on. i found my odyssey plus to look better especially when you move around alot. i tried the rift and couldnt get passed the sde. it really kills the experience. gotta have a beefy rig to play these headsets at an acceptable setting
Yes!! I did the right choice, can't wait for the delivery bell!!
What did you order 🙃
Oculus Rift S has very nice lenses quality, very low chromatic aberration, sharper on the center and also in the corners.
I'm going to order one today, waited too much to try VR :-)
The rift has a better overall visual fidelity.
Good vid.. Gotta say though, it's odd how the Vive Pro and Odyssey+ look washed out here compared to the Rift S. With the Rift S apparently (in this vid) offering better contrast and black levels? Seems odd because one would expect quite the opposite would be true, considering their respective display technologies.
Glad I got a Rift S coming. 👍 Nice videos brotha.
I love this serie, please keep making them. Still hoping you'll do a Rift S - Lenovo Explorer comparison one day.
So glad you did this comparison, Tyriel!
The Rift S really looks a lot better than I was expecting! Glad I ordered one of those as well!
Great to see that my Odyssey+ keeps up with the newer tech. I am glad because I cant upgrade anytime soon!
@Salt Maker Why so salty?
Best review by FAR. Thank you!
Either Index if you have a 1080ti or high end 20 series card and high end CPU and want to drop some serious £, or Rift S. I don't think you can beat the S for value and what you get, it's a big step up from the CV1 for sim racing. Love mine. As a first VR headset I'm not sure you can go wrong with it.
