I know what you mean about watching this and then not remembering it much days later. But I do remember it being good. Nice to see an actor try something different - which Gibson was definitely doing here.
To me the title was a metaphoric way of the character's life and not just the scars. . Because of the shameful stigma created around him for the apparently abuse committed to the child, He had no face to confront the people with the true event or reason for being with the minor
