Apologies for the later video than planned plus the quality not being quite up to scratch 📽️ I’ve had a bit of a mare this week with my laptop being taken ill 🆘 Video recovered, albeit at a lower quality than I’d have liked. Make sure you select 1080p on the quality setting. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed and thank you for baring with me! Dora 🤎
Morning Dora enjoyed the vlog again i have all raised beds as my plot is quite low lying and is suseptable to flooding but ive been a busy boy and raised the levels 15cm to negate this.Ive found raised beds to be really usful and limits the slug problems good timber to use is scaffolders batterns or old deck boards also im in the process of building a hinged covered top so i can grow aubergines outside.1 thing i found is dont make your beds wider than 120cm otherwise you struggle to reach over even with access either side look forward to seeing the progress take care and have a lovely festive season Aaron
Great vlog Dora always worth the wait . The kitchen segment was wonderful, so pleased it went well . I think raised beds is the way to go . I have all raised bed as my soil was very poor ❤ look forward to the next vlog ❤
Thank you Joanne, that’s such kind feedback - really appreciate it! Great stuff, I think it’s the way to go especially with soil control. See you soon ☺️☺️
@@doras.allotmentI haven’t yet had any slugs or snails as our garden is not prone to them, but I imagined slugs and snails prefer to hide under wood rather than under bricks
Goodness me that’s lucky! I agree, the wooden cracks must be very inviting vs the rough texture of a brick… I think that will have to be my way forward - thanks!
That was a really interesting video Dora. I'd never heard of medlars before; the recipe worked a treat - I would never have thought to put it on cheese - should be very tasty 🙂. It's very satisfying making your own produce like that - I've only had my allotment 2 years, but I've made strawberry jam and green tomato chutney; it's so satisfying. Loving the videos - thanks.
Thank you Steven, so kind of you to share that feedback. I was chuffed with how the jelly turned out, it felt like a long time to make the small amount but it’s worth it. Isn’t it just! Wow, all sounds delicious! Have a lovely week ☺️
Aww thank you! 🥰 I wish I could tell you but I pinched it from my parents as it was an old garden set of theirs. I’d recommend searching for ‘folding wooden directors chair’ x
This is a great video!! So much in it!! Love all the info on medlar jelly. I have some daffs that need planting, I wonder if I can do the same and give as a gift to people (I think mine are full size though not miniature). Such a lovely gift idea xx
Aw thank you Holly, I’m so pleased you found it a good watch. Thanks for sharing! Yes that would be a wonderful gift. You could do full size ones in old terracotta pots and give them as gifts with a bow… people could get going on the window and always put outside if they get too big. Good luck! 🥰
Hi Dora. I use bricks on the corners and random wooden stakes along the sides to keep the netting taught and in place. They act as a form of slug trap and just need checking in damp weather. If I had nice grass paths I wouldn't bother with adding wooden board surrounds but make the ratio of soil to path areas one that suits you.
if you want to move your polytunnel then put that on the left hand bit (as you look at it on the video) of you spare ground as that is clear of obstructions, the righthand bit put put two beds on as that is under you tree and will have a bit of shade then put put your other two beds where the tunnel is currently - shady beds are handy for growing salad crops. Your broad beans - start them off in pots or modules (either root trainers or CWC deep module trays) and then plant them out in the new year . just keep them somewhere out of the way of you tree rat (🤣) and other rodents.
That’s a good idea actually, I’m in 2 minds about having a polytunnel at all next year 😬😬 do you have one? I think I’ll hold off planting more broad beans out until the new year now you’re right! I planted them out from modules in spring last year and they did well. Haha the tree rat, they’re cheeky blighters!
Hey Dora Lovely vlog, as always. Naughty squirrel munching the broad beans. That’s disappointing! I really can’t give an unbiased opinion of raised beds. My entire plot is raised beds .. although only pretty shallow. My site here is quite wet though over winter, so it was mainly done to help with that and to give clear margins for the edges of beds. We are all twinning over the black netting aren’t we? I do love it. Medlar jam looks amazing, as do those bridal crown daffodils. Lovely bowl too. See you soon ❤
Thank you Clare 🥰 Aren’t they naughty!! Haha I need a bit of raised bed persuasion and your plot always looks so neat!! I was definitely inspired netting wise from yours ☺️ Thank you! Was so pleased with the ‘wing it’ medlar jelly. See you soon! X
Snow is absolutely beautiful on its first day 😂 until it gets mushy and dirty or I have to go out in it. We luckily haven’t had any yet but it will come. Bulbs are the essence of spring hope ❤. One would think/hope it’s too cold for slugs but alas 😢. Some amazing garlic choices Dora let’s hope they all do well. The kitchen must smell amazing ❤. Have a wonderful week, Ali 🥶🇨🇦
It did remain rather pretty for a few days here which was a treat ❄️🌨️ I imagine it’s a pretty sight when jt snows with you. Bloomin heck the slugs are relentless. Have a great week! 🥰
Hi Dora 👋 Such a lovely vlog as always ❤ I used lolly sticks last year and after a little while the pen faded as the stick got wet and they went mouldy so if I were you just use lolly sticks as a temporary fix and replace with plastic ones. The black net looks so much better than the white ones don't they. We are always battling against the daylight as it gets dark so much earlier these days. Awww the wildlife love broad beans don't they, The rats had mine in the polytunnel and like you I've had to order more. 🙄 Medlar jelly, mmmm bet that is lovely. The quality of your video is fine 👍 Have a great week ❤ x
Hi Linda, good point about the lolly sticks - I might use them and then take a picture and save it on my phone so I know what they are when the lollipops inevitably dissolve 😂 The black netting really is far better! And I love how you can see through this one still. Cheeky rats!!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 for round two. Aw thank you Linda, I was a bit conscious it wasn’t as high quality as I’d planned. Have a lovely week, I’m currently catching up on your last 2 videos and enjoying!
Another great video, thank you Dora . Your medlar jelly demonstration was very educational as well as enjoyable. How did the second batch turn out or are they still bletting ? Good idea to compare the runner bean from last year with freshly sown seeds .
Thank you George! Pleased you enjoyed the Medlar jelly making too. I haven’t made the second batch yet; just need to find a spare few hours (and get hold of lots of smaller jars). I think there will be medlar jelly for Christmas gifts… I’ll be interested to see if the beans revive themselves 🫘 have a lovely week!
Haha I was watching the medlar jam thinking nope that ain't gonna set... And then it did!! 😂 I always make medlar vegan-honey which is basically the jam recipe but it doesn't set 😂 I think raw medlar tastes a bit like cooked apple and banana. I missed the harvest window this year but I still have loads of jars of the honey from last year. Agreed that you should save the good compost for a spring topping. Lovely video Dora ❤
Dora .. Good work .Very nice..I am waiting for your video..I am happy to see your video. I love watching your videos, I am seeking guidance...Your farm is nice.
I am not a fan of raised beds. Surely more slugs with wooden sides. I would go for metal. My plot neighbour has plastic type sides looks awful but no slugs!!!!😊
Hi Heather 👋🏻 I was firstly protecting them from cheeky birds pulling them up and then secondly I wanted to get the netting up in preparation for allium leaf minor (it shouldn’t be a problem now but I know can be an issue at the plot and my leeks have succumbed to it). I do hope to plant some uncovered onions in raised beds in spring too as i love their statuesque nature 🧅🧅 do you grow autumn onions too?

Thanks for the tips Aaron! A very good idea especially with the flooding. You too 🎄🌲🎄🌲🎄
Well done with the jelly and allotment jobs. You make lovely videos.
Thank you so much Brenda! Have a lovely week and as always, thanks for watching ☺️
That medlar jelly looks like a real treat. I love making our own jellies and jams.
Thank you Robin. It’s very rewarding isn’t it 😃
Great job Dora 👏👩🌾
Thank you! ☺️
❤ fabulous vlog, great to learn about medlars. I’d definitely recommend raised beds..saves the back in the long run.
Thank you! 🥰 that is very true, reduced bending would be a bonus

Dora I use a similar netting over the plants to protect them and weigh it all, down with rocks and bricks, as we get lots of very strong winds
That’s a good idea! I think I might have to get myself a stack of bricks 🧱 how do you find them with the slugs?
