It’s hard to argue against such great sound quality plus a strong mediatek processor, and compared to Google’s Nest Audio, I would go for the 4th gen Echo Dot in a heartbeat.
The satisfaction you gave me when you said the part about not buying the Echo 4 just for the sound when you can plug in your speaker to your Echo. Man that was good to hear! Thanks for the review!
I actually think the sound demonstration in this video the 3rd Gen actually sounded clearer than the 4th Gen. The 4th Gen sounds louder and has better base but the voices actually sounded more muffled on the 4th gen than the 3rd gen.
I bought one the other day 4th, Gen Echo dot. Luv it. I’m still learning how to use Alexxa. Love the sound quality. I listen to it when prepping meals or cleaning.
Thanks mate :) I'm buying one for my dad for Christmas and couldnt decide which to get him. I'm 100% going with the 4th gen now. Have a good Christmas!

I literally got mine today for £35 in the UK for the 4th gen. I think it's a better buy due to those improvements. Also I never used Alexa before so wanted to get myself the best possible (within those tiny products range) experience.
Same here, a mate at work recommended them so I got one for my kids and one for my lounge, both £35, great bargain, back at £50 now. I’d never used it before and I’m still learning but it’s already been a worthwhile purchase!
4th gen sounds a lot better, but I already have a 3rd gen dot and regular echo. Don’t want to spend more money on new ones just to trash the old ones since echos are tied to your account and are not really resellable, or they are but it’s a huge hassle. I never used the line out feature, and you just gave me a great idea to just keep the previous gen echos, and just upgrade the sound which I will look into doing. Thanks.
I just bought an Echo dot 4th Gen and to be honest despite the size my Altec Lansing speakers are 100 percent better with sound quality. With that stated the sound quality of the Echo is not bad it's just not really solid quality. The other issue I have is after the second day it picked up on my Bluetooth and interrupted with my current speaker running on my PC. These speakers are meant to be used throughout your home and I get it but why did it cut off my speaker to my PC without me connecting my Bluetooth to it? Weird!
Hey Si, thanks for your comment. Some people have started to report that. I personally haven’t had that issue. That’s interesting though. Thank you for watching! 😊
Hmm the 4th gen sounds way better than the 3rd which sounds ridiculously muffled compared to mine. Did you have the bass and treble at max on the 3rd gen as it doesn't seem so 🤔
Excellent video. Thanks for the comparison. I'll stick with the gen 3 as I agree with all the points you made and it's helped me make my mind up. Worth a sub for sure :)
Great rundown and demo! I've got 2 - 3rd gen and just ordered a 4th gen.... 1/2 price sale, so it was only a couple of dollars more than another 3rd gen....
That's Amazon sending software update to slower it down so you will upgrade. When I first got my 3rd gen it was quick to respond but after many updates it is slowed down. I wish there was a way to turn off automatic updates so they couldn't screw it up

I have both....the 3rd gen is still way better in my opinion, def not worth upgrading to the 4th gen! I prefer the hockey puck style over the baseball/softball style! Both sound exactly the same as far as sound quality to me......3rd gen wins for me! :)
Great review ... Best one I've watched .. brilliant content and straight to the point. I'm gonna purchase 3rd Gen. Many blessings in the New year ... Stay safe brother.
Thanks this helped me out a lot. Sticking with the third gen. Gotta do more than improve sound to make me move. I guess I was looking for more things that the fourth could do compared to the third.
I guess they need to try to compete with Sonos and other similar systems, but for myself when I listen to music I do it via my AVR system. Ten speakers in two rooms, and another room (open layout) in between those two gets great stereo sound from both directions. And if I Bluetooth it I can pull audio from Alexa into the AVR, which means the same audio from the multiple echo dots scattered around the house… no way am I ‘upgrading’. Totally not needed. Now if it had a simple LCD clock, I might be tempted to put one in my bedroom where I have no tv or other audio…. Oh wait, one does have that….
@@AdamsTechLife it’s typical really. It’s just a 2-zone AVR. As I’m using the full 7.1 in speakers in zone 1 in the living room, it frees zone 2 for a separate stereo amp with two speakers. That’s in the dining room. Between those two rooms is the kitchen, which has no speakers but gets sound from the other two rooms.
Great vid. I've just upgraded one of my 3-ers to a 4th gen and I agree, it does sound better. I got mine in the sales, wouldn't pay the full price either. Have you noticed that the 4th gen has "tap gestures" in the general settings of the App? Apparently you can tap/punch? the devi device to snooze an alarm.
Hey Lester, thanks for you comment. Those sales are always great! I did not know about the tap to snooze, that’s awesome. Thanks for pointing that out!!
I have both, I like the third gen hockey puck better. More stable on a table, smaller for travel,, you can see the ring light, and use it as a nightlight. I got my 4th gens yesterday that I ordered because I cant see (blind) and know there was a differentce and I was like wtf is this> I noticed the better audio quality too but I don't think its worth the other tradeoffs.
why did you not read the technical specifications? How many microphones are on board? Which one can hear you speak better? Considering they're both really not audio systems I would rather have it here what I say and which one would be better would be the most important thing for me… Especially when I'm plugging in speakers to it anyway forget about their onboard
Hannah, thanks for your comment. At the end of the video i share my overall thoughts though it comes down to personal preference. I prefer 3rd gen. Thanks for watching! 😊
Do you think the 4th is a good buy for first timers? Currently going to buy one as a gift for somebody who doesnt have one. Do you recommend the 3rd or 4th
Thank you for the excellent comparison! Super glad to have stumbled upon your channel. Great content and really, really good production quality. Subscribed, and can’t wait for more!
I still have two 2nd gen dots that sound like music plays out of a Tuna can. I'm considering adding speakers to the living room TV with one of my older dots plugged into it. I'll have to switch inputs on the remote between tv and Alexa but I don't mind that.
3rd gen is more bassier and louder if u equalize it also u can make it crispier, and if u try to make the 4th gen bassier it wouldnt be a difference but with the 3rd gen its gonna get a big differcence once u equalize it
I think sound is better in 3rd gen because in 3rd gen I feel bass and vocals are crisp but in 4th gen I didn't feels any bass but vocals are very crisp that's annoying me in 4th gen because of no bass and with only very crisp vocals..
When you upgrade does everything from the old one transfer ( because it's in the app / cloud? Not sure) or do you have to redo everything, as in connecting smart bulbs etc? I have a smart bulb that was really awkward to set up and messing that up by upgrading wouldn't be worth the hassle for me ( unless I ever had no choice)
Hey wolverineiscool, thanks for your comment. I’m not entirely sure to be completely honest. If I was guessing, I would say the 4th gen would be better but I’m not entirely sure. Thanks for watching! 😊
I'm still on the OG dot! Should I get a 3 or just go ahead and get the 4? EDIT: Never mind, just got to the sound test and I think it's the 4 for me! If I had the 3 I wouldn't bother but seeing as I'm on the OG I think it's worth it.

Hello Red, thanks for your comment. That’s interesting, glad the sound test was helpful for you. Thanks for watching! 😊
When you listen to Alexa's voice alone you will notice the clearer, crisp voice.
It could just be the song but the bass is definitely overwhelming the voice in the 4th gen on this one.
yeah i agree 3rd sounds better.. i prefer balanced base and clear sound rather the muffled sound with extra base

Adam, So grateful to you for this, and to my chum Sir Ronald O'Donald for telling me about the device. Now remind me, what does one use it for??
Just about anything you can think of :)
3rd gen is more bassier and louder if u equalize it also u can make it crispier, and if u try to make the 4th gen bassier it wouldnt be a difference but with the 3rd gen its gonna get a big differcence once u equalize it
Thanks for your tip! 👌🏽
How do you equalise it?
@@RMetsy on your echo dot's sound settings
@@Valay. Thank you
Found a 4th gen for 20 bucks but had to drive for it seeing amazon sell the 3rd gen and delivered to me for the same price
Nice! Thanks for watching! 😊
The sound is so much better!
I agree! Thanks for watching! 😊
I think sound is better in 3rd gen because in 3rd gen I feel bass and vocals are crisp but in 4th gen I didn't feels any bass but vocals are very crisp that's annoying me in 4th gen because of no bass and with only very crisp vocals..
Thanks for watching! 😊
All data is stored in the cloud not locally on the echo so everything syncs across. Thanks for watching! 😊
@@AdamsTechLife Thank you for replying....appreciate it.
Qustion which one would you recomend (this would be mine first and in my country the gen 4 is same price as gen 3 and I dont want it on a wall)
The video will answer your question :)
But what about the microphone quality? does 4th gen have better understanding of your voice from farther away?
Hey wolverineiscool, thanks for your comment. I’m not entirely sure to be completely honest. If I was guessing, I would say the 4th gen would be better but I’m not entirely sure. Thanks for watching! 😊
Super helpful! Thanks very much
Hey Richard, thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the video!
The 4 will be a nice upgrade! Thanks for watching! 😊
Thank you for this
Hello L S, glad to hear you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Thanks for watching! 😊
Why did you put the mic 🎤 pickup closer to 3rd version and farther on 4th? Did you use same volume settings on both?
Tried to get equal distance between them. Same settings on both. Thanks for watching! 😊
Great video! Very informative
Hello TheRealAmiiA, thanks for watching! 😊
