like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
This guy is literally so cool, he just does smart home stuff and that’s all, keep up the good work, I like that your not trying to be anything else like other you tubers
It's great to hear your thoughts about the Zigbee hub. I had similar connection issues which is odd since I hadn't seen those before with the 2nd Gen Echo Show. Your end clips are the best!
The hub aspect was the bit that ALMOST made me jump for it. I've paid the "early-adopter-tax" before and now I'm a touch more cautious. I'm sure they'll sort compatibility and automations out. My 2d gen dots are begging to be upgraded (as soon as I find a way to re-purpose them too). I'm really excited for it, and with Zigbee the possibility of fast, local control exists. I saw another video where it was hard to watch the delay and it reminded me of the Wyze Band and that was really disappointing BUT, it is an early unit and will hopefully get better.
Hey Reed, Can you please make a video talking about best ways to automate a bedroom with the google assistant or the apple homekit. this would be REALLY helpful.
Just bought one, Black Friday, for $45, to function as my ZigBee hub to manage motorized shades from Smartwings. This saved me thousands compared to the same vial Lutron Serina. The price was definitely right!
lmfao I swear I asked me echo dot what the temperature is today at the exact same time you did and it freaked me out and had me wondering why my echo was responding through the dot and through the TV. It took me a second to realize you had asked it the same question because I wasnt paying much attention to the video at the time.
If you want to know if Alexa is listening to you without seeing the light, just enable the “start of request” sound, because it plays a little sound after saying the wake word. (I’m not saying you have to, just a little info I might add.)
Echo sounds bigger and with way more bass than the new dot. But it's really bad at picking up my voice. Even when I'm being loud. My gen 3 dots pick me up way better from further away.
About control. With Zwave, it is tightly controlled and they have to buy the radios from Zwave. Amazon doesn't have any direct control over it. Zigbee isn't controlled in the same way, just a standard, and they can make their own hardware and do more proprietary things with them. Lack of control here is why there is often more capability issues with zigbee. Ring had already developed their alarm Zwave before Amazon bought them. Interestingly, the alarm base station is said to have a zigbee radio but apparently isn't turned on.
Just got Smartbot temperature sensors and considering Sonoff Zigbee sensors. Amazon Prime Day should result in a ton of new Zigbee enabled Echo devices. I think I have over 50 items sending RF around the house.
Reed, as a Hub, I’m curious if it can strengthen my connection between Wyze sensor and a Wyze bridge that works sometimes. If it can, I’ll be all over it.
Yolink also goes a long range. And they already work without going into a sidewalk platform. Able to use echo to make yolink announcements also. The yolink speaker hub also announces.
Hi I follow every video of yours Love from India It will mean the world to me if u answer this I have an iPhone XS Max but it’s not always at home can I write nfc tags from it and then use them with my iPhone 8 which I always have with me Pls ans
Great Video Reed, I’m still having a hard time deciding if I should go into the Alexa or Google ecosystem. I have some of both. It really is between the nest and Ring smart home stuff. I like Google’s but am hesitant as they canceled their alarm system. Google seems to give up and abandon certain projects to easy. Thoughts?
Heres the thing. who says you can't go with both? My main ecosystem is Google and their devices. They only tend to kill projects that they don't see beneficial, but they will pretty much always support a previous device even after they make a new model thats typically how it goes with Google. For me I love the assistant cause it comes on my pixel natively and is super helpful when I need to know how to do something or whether I'm navigating my phone hands free but I'm planning on adding this 4th gen to my smart home. The automations and routines are on another level plus with the hub and local control with some ZigBee smart lights should be a breeze. That's why I mainly want it for and I'm hearing that it will be able to use ultra low frequencies to detect whether your home or way. Instead of phone proximity. If thats true, imagine the automation possiblies especially when matter comes around.
Can you please tell me can this echo device run a 3rd party tuya compatible app for me and eg all my wifi smart bulbs connect directly to that and not crowd up my wifi network etc and also operate if the internet connect was down? i want a hub that can keep my home network more isolate from my smart bulbs etc thanks in advance and love the videos !!!! :)
I think the mission with the echo fourth generation is to help assist far as a hub and Wi-Fi extender. It’s not meant to connect 1 million things. That’s why you have the echo show in the echo studio that could take on. With you having the echo fourth generation premium sound it should give you music in close proximity where you are in the house like your bedrooms small little rooms. But I believe they building a system to ask Bacon or mesh together and play as one home theatrical system throughout the home
I'm having real trouble with my Philips Hue bulbs. It just won't discover them at all despite making them discoverable, turning bulb off for 10 seconds and back on. Moving echo 4 closer to the bulb etc. Echo dot 4 is fine detecting them on Bluetooth. Crazy.
If Amazon added as Zigbee, ZWave and WiFi protocols in their devices and integrate with Samsung, that would be a game changer. Presently, I’m a Google fan, but they are getting too invasive.
Can you please answer these two and a half questions? 1. Can you pair two of these for stereo sound to a TV via Bluetooth? 2. Can you pair a Hue Bulb without having to download the Hue app? Is it 100% free from the Hue Bridge setup?
For the first, yes and you can do it with no latency using the Fire Stick. www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GDFMQWDYT5MCAEA4 or just pair it with another Echo device as well. Second question, yes you can pair the hue bulb without needing the hue app or hue bridge. The Echo is all of it in one package.
Sidewalk mode should be opt in NOT opt out, I IMMEDIATELY deactivated it, no thanks big brother, I already have a dozen mics in my home and now you freely let others near my house have a back door access, wow idiots approved it to be implemented this way.
If I get anymore Alexa's, our lass will leave me, got about 8 in the house and 1 in the car, Amazon cant make the delivery till Friday, so I've got to put up with her a little longer😉
I am attempting to connect this Echo 4 (hub) to my Schlage electronic door lock. Alexa says it is connected, but always tells me there is a problem with the lock. The lock works fine with my ring alarm app. I am assuming the problem is really Alexa. Hard to find much info on the web concerning this.
I wonder if a connection can be made between the spherical shape and the Amazon Spheres in Seattle or if it was purely a functional move to get better sound.
Hey, would you consider this a worth while upgrade to someone (such as me) who already has an Echo Plus 2nd Generation, and an Echo studio? I know I could upgrade the Echo plus to this and keep the temperature sensor, and hub, in one unit, but would it be worth it? and would I gain anything. Thanks
Hey I have a question, I have Alexa dart and I just want to know with this fourth generation echo does it have a belt and recorder camera? And also how is the quality using this when if you do record? Because when I had my eye vision I was always using video editor to sync the music into my timeline which I can’t do that anymore so I’m just wondering does this have like a belt in the camera so we can actually record for you I lost my eyesight back in 2018 and has the mic and how many miles does it have i’m using my voice over from my iPhone and it messes up sometimes so if my words don’t make sense it’s my voiceover. Thanks
I had no idea that Echo and Echo Dot were two different things 😤 Well, I did but I thought the Dot was the short, cylindrical device. I've been over here ripping my hair out trying to get a stupid DOOR SENSOR to hook up to my "4th Gen Echo" BECAUSE APPARENTLY ITS NOT AN ECHO AFTER ALL 😤
I haven't bought anytime yet ... I don't know what's wrong with me I buy Amazon by the truckload every year you have calculator. I just don't know I don't know if it's a shape or if I'm getting old or what or if is the shape of the world right now. Still great review catch you later
So I am reading that this could let you use your Hue bulbs without your Hue hub. Do you know if this is true and, if so, how many bulbs/lights could it support? I am up to 2 Hue hubs right now and would love to get one of these Echoes if I can phase out 2 other hubs.
Any idea how to query the zigbee channel used by the Echo 4 zigbee hub? Is this chosen dynamically by the Echo or is it fixed and the same with every Echo 4?
I've been using Google Home and Alexa during the whole pandemic for a load of things including controlling my TV. The AI on Alexa is so poor compared to Google's, I don't know how some people online can recommend it, let alone say that they're similar. Take public transport queries, directions, like what bus to catch to X theatre or train station. Alexa can't do it. Google on the other hand understands exactly what info you're asking for. Don't get me started on Alexa's TV control... At least this one has a hub for those that want it. Still, I'd rather buy a separate hub and stick with Google.
Hi. So I have connected a few wall light switches easy with the Alexa with the built in hub. And they all work fine. But how would I then install them on to a separate app ?? For example to create scenes with sensors. Or can it all be done through the Alexa app ?? Thanks 👍
can you do a video on how to return a home assistant?. Is there anything to delete? Will everything I programmed on the app still work on a replacement device?
Just bought the echo 4th Gen. It came with a hue bulb so I thought I'd buy a sonoff sensor and connect it so the light would go on and off by itself. However, I am completely at a loss as to how to do this. I downloaded the eWelink app but it doesn't recognise any devices. Am I supposed to add the echo as a device then the motion sensor. If so how? If anyone can help us be very grateful.
Especially with the introduction of IFTTT Pro, Amazon could full a big gap in the smart home world of being the easiest way to do automation. Great review!
@@SmartHomeSolver If Amazon could make a system to manage routines via voice they could really take over automation. Think if you could just say "Alexa, everyday at sunset, turn off the family room lights" to setup an automation or even more advanced stuff like "Alexa, disable my Family Room Motion routine for 1 hour". If Amazon could create a system like that it could really help get automation to everyone and take hold of what IFTTT left in the space.
There are some people, specially in Brazil, complaining about the mics of the Echo. They are saying it is terrible, worst then echo dot 3. Is it good to you? Is it like Echo 3rd? Thanks in advance!
im looking at this to replace my Wink hub, its on its second time down for over 2 weeks now and the people at wink have no idea when it will be back up. so do you think this would be a good replacement?
I preordered a pair of them... My biggest complaint is the fact that you cant pair two echos together and then pair those echos to a computer or non firetv in stereo mode. I still got a pair of them for my firestick since I can just watch my movies from there via plex. Then when I need to I can just connect one speaker to my laptop which it sucks that I cant use both but it is what it is.
It’s now mid January 2022 … the last week I have tried to add several zigbee items to my echo 4th gen which I also bought in the last week. NONE of them connected. I tried to connect each item over 40 times! Extremely frustrating and time consuming for absolutely nothing. I deliberately chose the echo because of the internal zigbee. Seriously thinking of returning the echo 4th gen and just sticking to sengled light bulbs, my plug sockets and my 3rd gen dot. I wanted to do a fair bit more, but can’t see it without spending an absolute fortune, which Alexa echo 4th gen makes out is possible.
Is the Zigbee hub really a plus when the Connected Home Over IP standard is still at least several months away from being published, never mind that hardware containing the standard is even further out?
I have two of these and they have been a pain. Drops off my network, are slow, and the Zigbee hub won’t hold the two lights that came with them. I’ve spent hours with Tech Support and they still screw up.
So I'm assuming the skills will be the same terribleness just like on my older Dot? I can't use it to turn on 1 Hue light, only all of them. Tried everything to get it working right. Tile's never able to find my keys or my phone. I know it's not just me both skills have lower than a 2.5/5 rating with 100+ reviews. Searching random skills it sure seems like a ton of them have a rating of 2.5 or less too. I'm talking skills with a good number of reviews not 2 or 3. Maybe the inclusion of the Zigbee hub will make intergrations better, because with the skills I've used to control smart devices I wouldn't touch this. But your mortal enemy Paul Hibbert doesn't seem to like Zigbee that much, I've never used it myself so I dunno if he's just ranting like he does with Hue though lol.
Hello, i have question.. Imrotant for me.. Can i use echo 4 hub for philips hue like philips hue bridge ? i own two philips hue bulbs and Philips tv abilight, so a need connect my bulbs to TV and expans ambilight,,so can i use echo insted hue bridge to make this work? thx very much
I got my 4th gen Dot today, but noticed when adding it to announce in a routine that it was grayed out , any way I can fix this? It announces when I select all devices but not individually help
I noticed that too on mine. Must be some issue with the new devices since I checked that my settings were right. At least I think they are. It’s annoying either way but I’m sure it will be fixed soon.
I need something like zigbee wach to use it as schedule source for automation offline ..... 😕is it Amazon echo have this option or any solution please ???? Thank's for every thinks
I tried that and it didn’t work the first time so I did it in the app and it worked. I think I read on Amazon’s site that it’s better to use the app for it, but I’m not 100% sure.
@@SmartHomeSolver ah okay. I’ve never had a need to use the feature so I was unsure. I’ve only ever linked devices where I had downloaded a skill first.
If Alexa routines were more advanced, could you use this as your main hub?
I dont think so. Im unsure if i should buy smartthings
Not everything works with Alexa. I personally think unless you can attach something like Home Assistant to it I don’t think Alexa will ever be a hub.
I'd use Home Assistant as my automation platform, but Alexa as the hub.
Not really because the status of devices is real time in smartthings, the alexa app is rather poor.

I find it odd that Amazon made this Echo a concealed Zigbee hub and didn’t also include ZWave as that is the system that Ring, an Amazon entity, uses.

Thanks for sharing. Great video.
Is the Zigbee hub really a plus when the Connected Home Over IP standard is still at least several months away from being published, never mind that hardware containing the standard is even further out?
Is the speaker much better then the cheaper version of the 4th gen?
It’s too bad that Hubitat doesn’t streamline the set up for end users for simplicity because it seems like it would be a way better choice for a “hub”
What's your take on this after a year of updates?
Echo is a Low end smart home automation.
Prefer a commercial grade smart home installation , like in modern homes.
Can Tuya zigbee devices be connected to the zigbee hub within the echo dot? Or would I have to get the Tuya hub?
Is it just me, or is the Echo and the Dot sound the same?
You can hear the difference if you're using headphones to watch this RUclips video
Will it work with my old hub
Are the sound quality the same?? It’s just louder and more bass?
This is lit 🔥 I pre-ordered one.
Question, the led circle on mine got lower how can I change it back to the original strong glow?
I wonder being as these have a Bluetooth low energy hub inside will they be able to control a switchbot bot ?
I need something like zigbee wach to use it as schedule source for automation offline ..... 😕is it Amazon echo have this option or any solution please ???? Thank's for every thinks
I ordered it. I need suggestions
Great video. Could you have just asked Alexa to find the devices?
I tried that and it didn’t work the first time so I did it in the app and it worked. I think I read on Amazon’s site that it’s better to use the app for it, but I’m not 100% sure.
@@SmartHomeSolver ah okay. I’ve never had a need to use the feature so I was unsure. I’ve only ever linked devices where I had downloaded a skill first.
