Carl's body of work covers a lot of ground, but this clip (for me) captures his talent, timing, chemistry, etc. Kudos to the studio for re-introducing Carl to a new generation in Ocean's.
He said during the making of the movie that his character was to bland. He figured if he ate something during the scene it wouldn’t look like he’s just standing around doing nothing
It was more than that. During filming it was very rushed and they never had time to eat. So he would eat as quick as possible and Soderberg just incorporated it into the film.
William Smith seems like everyone’s got conflicting stories, I’ve heard that cause their always seen planning or robbing. They’d never have time to eat, so Rusty always eats on the job
I love the little details, like the dog that finishes about 20 yards behind the rest of the pack. They don’t say anything or call attention to it, just the mention at the start of the race and the “he breaks late, everyone knows this” response. Great movie!
Saul's theme song here is "Blues in the Night", aka "My Mama Done Tol' Me", it's been done by a lot of people/bands over the years going back to 1941, Ella Fitzgerald does a nice version. It's a great tune to jam to, if you got the right musicians in the room, nice bluesy, jazzy shuffle a guitarist, sax, or clarinet player can really sink his/her teeth into. You can also speed it up, play it at a tempo like Statesboro Blues and it really cooks.
Well I am so glad ! Years ago we knew some people who had some Greyhounds that they had caught from a greyhound rescue and people need to know the truth about that industry and how rotten really heartless it can be
This bit with Reiner and Pitt is easy to forget in a movie thats full of them. But, this is particularly old school. like two polished guys doing Vaudville.
I love the little things in screenwriting. For instance, "You're the best there is; you're in Cooperstown." Only recently did I understand what he meant by that.
This is the ESSENCE of fuckin Cool. "That your hound way in the rear there?" "He breaks late. Everyone knows this." Rusty with a KNOWING smile. Whatever. Then after Rusty lays down the tickets he pats Saul on the back almost as a salute to Saul's Cooperstown legendary status. This is how guys MEN are 'sposed to act.
This whole clip is the essence of cool. Well, most of this movie was the essence of cool. I wish I could be 20-something and in Vegas again. Not even robbing it. Just being there in my 20s.
this suit and the one Pitt is wearing when he goes to pick up cloney at prison at the end of the movie are both fucking cool suits. wish I could know what style they are. to buy some
cheapkah lol i read somewhere that because they had almost no time to eat, he wandered around with food, eating for real on set. also because of that, on the final scene outside penitentiary he makes a gesture like of indigestion, as if he had enough (food).
Apparently he did it to add realism to his character. Since he takes one of the main roles in planning the heist, Pitt thought it would be realistic that his character wouldn't have time to have sit-down meals, having him resort to quick meals he can eat on the go.
He did it because he wanted to make sure his character looked like he was always on the fly & never had time to sit down for a decent meal & always snacking
Yes, Saul is PERFECT !!! I am trying to find where he say's in response to whether he is going to the boxing match... "I have no interest in hand to hand combat... " as " Lymon Zerga"
Brad Pitt is eating in every scene cuz his trainer had him on rigorous training regiment, so Brad was saying "fuck you trainer and your exercises" *EATS*
Helicobacter pylori causes a significant percentage of people’s ulcer- Used to be a lot of people couldn’t heal their ulcers for months or years and it was due to the bacteria. Once the Australian doc figured it out and the person takes the proper antibiotics and acid reducers to get rid of the bacteria their ulcers heal. That was in the 1980’s but i bet aaron king was just kidding b/c it sounds funny.
It is amazing when u watch people at the Track .....Dogs & Horses are HORRIBLE bets ...u never win ...ever ...they are all the same and no probabilities ....u win once lose 20 times ...bet Football ....much better !
RIP Carl Reiner. Saul was a great character in this movie.
He truly was....RIP
Mr. Zerga👏RIP
Rip
@@billabongboomerang7704 I've never liked the feel of cold steel against my skin!
Saul was a good man…
so sad to hear of Carl Reiners Passing - his "He Breaks Late, Everyone Knows This!" is the best line at the track ever!!!!
“You could ask him,”
“Hey, I could ask him!”
"I saw you before you woke up this morning" I still use that line.
Best line out there. Especially when someone tries to confirm their alpha status, they just stare in awe.
the funny part is that line actually makes sense to certain people--they wake up ready to take on the day and outfox everyone planning to take them.
lame line i would never use it its not cool at all
I use it all the time 🤣
"I got wall to wall and a goldfish. I'm seeing a nice lady who works at the unmentionables counter at Macy's." 😂

Classic!

Agreed, He could work a dialogue... once he says his lines they're minted forever - the guy was pure gold
I think Brad Pitt only eats during times when hes being recorded for a movie.
I actually thought it was a coincidence, that they shot a few scenes in a row of him eating something and kept that in as a running gag.
William Smith seems like everyone’s got conflicting stories, I’ve heard that cause their always seen planning or robbing. They’d never have time to eat, so Rusty always eats on the job
i heard he was filming two movies at the same time so he has always rushing to set and snacking while they shot
I love the little details, like the dog that finishes about 20 yards behind the rest of the pack. They don’t say anything or call attention to it, just the mention at the start of the race and the “he breaks late, everyone knows this” response. Great movie!

thank you, to be honest I was about to comment that question !
Rich Sutterfield THANK YOU
re: "it's been done by a lot of people/bands over the years going back to 1941" including Warner Brothers and Bugs Bunny.
Quincy Jones produced and arranged this version, assembling an all-star cast of jazz and session musicians to do it.
Thank you, man!
The “unmentionables” line and “you’re in Cooperstown” always get me for some reason.
so long carl, thanks for all the laughs for 98 years. rest in peace.
What makes this scene is at the end when Saul's dog comes in way back in last. Didn't break late!
RIP, Carl Reiner. Thank you for your incredible work in one of the greatest films ever. It wouldn’t have been the same without you!
I love the shot of the dogs finishing the race in a bunch...and then Saul's dog, way in the rear😆
The funniest part is Saul's dog, despite being a "late starter"... finishes last, LOL. At 2:14.
There will never be another Carl Reiner. May he RIP!!!
What an awesome movie and scene 2000 to 2010 was the best era of movies..
just to note, Florida passed a state amendment banning greyhound racing, so this too is an end of an era scene.
Well I am so glad ! Years ago we knew some people who had some Greyhounds that they had caught from a greyhound rescue and people need to know the truth about that industry and how rotten really heartless it can be

I came to the comments for this
Tom Daines dude I never check the comments. But I automatically started to search for this comment unintentionally.
RIP to an absolute legend
Just when Saul thought he had his ulcers under control. lol

The dog actually arrived 5 seconds after the rest of the group LOL
Rest In Peace Carl Reiner..
RIP Carl Reiner.
rest in peace Carl Reiner
I love the little things in screenwriting. For instance, "You're the best there is; you're in Cooperstown." Only recently did I understand what he meant by that.
What does it mean?
@@Estephan2013 That’s where the (Baseball) Hall of Fame is; he’s saying he was the best in the business 😊
@@GalimodI’ve been wondering what that line meant for 22 years!
Saul still waiting for his dog to break 😂
Saul was the man RIP
This really is a good scene. Getting old and living in Florida I really enjoyed this scene
My favorite scene in the series!
RIP sir
Ah! I play poker here. Had no idea it was the filming location for oceans 11. Love you Derby Lane!!
This is the ESSENCE of fuckin Cool.
"That your hound way in the rear there?"
"He breaks late. Everyone knows this."
Rusty with a KNOWING smile.

michael paulino you ever notice that dog that finishes the race and the end of the scene. It's way far behind...lol.
And he threw away his ticket once the race was finished. His bet was a bust.
This whole clip is the essence of cool. Well, most of this movie was the essence of cool. I wish I could be 20-something and in Vegas again. Not even robbing it. Just being there in my 20s.
I've always wondered what he whispered to Saul
"We're going to hit Benedict, your cut is 15 million, see you in Vagas"
they prob wanted to have a pulp fiction briefcase moment i guess :D
The director is trying to say the audience shouldn't be treated like grown ups
Isn't it obvious ??
oh no!
"Is that your hound way in the rear there?"
"He breaks late. Everyone knows this"
20 sec later - the dog arrives 5 sec after the rest LOL
I saw you before you even got up this morning,
"You could ask him."
"Hey, I could ask him."
They dont make movie like this anymore.
Good old times i really missed.
Rip Carl.
Saul is a god !!
R.I.P Rob Reiner aka Mr Zerga
Saul makes 10, 10 oughta do it don’t you think? You think we need to get 1 more?
You think we need to get 1 more.
All right we’ll get 1 more.

Quball87 I did a Google search and I believe that's the store's name. I'll give it another try.
Carl to me was the one who made this movie great
Quincy Jones does the song “Blues in the Night”.
Saul is my favorite character 🤣
Breaks late, everybody knows this
Saint Petersburg was in a classic movie fuck yea
Hahaha. “Box seats” at the dog track in St. Pete
This guy is still alive and he is 96 years old
Not anymore sorry to say
Whats the name of the song playing when saul shows up?
notice how rusty is always eating in almost every scene
there's that orange again. could symbolize the "death" of saul's attempt to go straight.
Saul and his gambling
why brad bitt always eating
cheapkah lol i read somewhere that because they had almost no time to eat, he wandered around with food, eating for real on set. also because of that, on the final scene outside penitentiary he makes a gesture like of indigestion, as if he had enough (food).
Because his character had just stopped smoking, it was on his backstory
Apparently he did it to add realism to his character. Since he takes one of the main roles in planning the heist, Pitt thought it would be realistic that his character wouldn't have time to have sit-down meals, having him resort to quick meals he can eat on the go.
cheapkah lol cause in real life he quit smoking cigarettes,so in order to kill your boredom, eating is the substitution for smoking
He did it because he wanted to make sure his character looked like he was always on the fly & never had time to sit down for a decent meal & always snacking
Brad is so cool and suave
You come here to give me a physical?
ALWAYS wondered what it is exactly Rusty is eating in this scene... is it a frozen peach? A sno-cone? I GOTTA KNOW!
How is Oceans 8 going to beat this!!! They got their work cut out
There is no chance to beat this.
They didn't lol
Did he get religion? Ulcer. The dialogue in this movie is incredible, including the small talk
Yes, Saul is PERFECT !!! I am trying to find where he say's in response to whether he is going to the boxing match... "I have no interest in hand to hand combat... " as " Lymon Zerga"
Me too. Cannot find a clip of that.
grtttttttt movie
Better call Saul!
What is Pitts tattoo in this movie
Saul made big
what did rusty whisper to saul at 2:04?
What did they need Saul for?
They needed an inside man to get the explosives and Chen into the vault.
This is the essence of cool if your an embryo.and there are 4 oceans movie's
There are two. Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Eight are disgraces
Brad Pitt is so cool
RIP Lyman zerga
haha fucken saul at the end 2:28 😄😄😄👍
May they always carry your luggage. 😅
I saw you on my way back
They say Rusty didn't treat Saul like a grownup and only moved his mouth without saying anything
Always got to make us believe we need the joooo🙄
A sad day
What does Saul mean when he says he's got 'wall-to-wall'?
Wall-to-wall carpeting I believe
I live not too far from that track. Good ol’ Derby Lane. I think they’re retiring the greyhounds out of the races now.
Brad Pitt is eating in every scene cuz his trainer had him on rigorous training regiment, so Brad was saying "fuck you trainer and your exercises"
*EATS*
Aç olan Tazı'ya oynarım.
Tok olan Tazı'ya oynamam.
Derby Lane, before greyhound racing was banned
No more Greyhound racing in Florida.
Why? Woke fucks?
Zerga
what is actually rusty whispered to saul?i still don't understand hehehe, someone please tell me
I'm guessing it was something along the lines of "anything's better than sitting on your ass"
This movie was made before they found out about Heliobacter Pylori
Aaron King whst do u mean
Helicobacter pylori causes a significant percentage of people’s ulcer- Used to be a lot of people couldn’t heal their ulcers for months or years and it was due to the bacteria.
