- We're doing a tire swap, and these babies ain't light. All tires we're swapping are loaded, and one set has 300lbs of wheel weights on each tire. So we thought about it for a minute, then realized this was a perfect job for our friends over at Meekhof Tire in Mattawan. They're used to jobs of this size (and much larger), so we thought we'd see how they do it. Adam Tuinstra handled the work, and has handled so many others we've brought him over the years. He made short, easy work of this hard job, showing how years of experience and the right tools can make a tough job easy. While working he answers common tractor tire questions, and we learned a lot listening to him and imagine you may also.

Thank you for watching!
Adam really knows his stuff. Good video.
Thanks Neal!
I put 4 inch spacers Front and back on my JD 3046r with cab.!!! Thats what the owner of Bora recommended on my model and I'm glad that I listened to him.!!! Its a very stable tractor now.!!!
I just (last night) flipped the rear wheels around on my 3320 that I've had for 5 years. I have a hill on my property and the rear was really narrow. I got "tipsy" quite a few times...not just on the hill, but with loads on the forks/bucket. I do have 110lbs of weight on each tire, and a grader box that lives out back with an extra 150# on it, but it wasn't enough. During my "test drive" after flipping the wheels and reinstalling the weights it felt MUCH more stable. I'd been playing with fire much too long.....
Thank you for the videos!
Nice. Adam is a hard worker. I sure would feel lazy around him. I love the fork lift attachment for moving tires.
Definitely. Almost felt like I would slow him down trying to do anything. He was in the zone 😂
@@GoodWorksTractors For sure. When I got the R14T tires on my tractor I just stood back out of the way and watch these 2 young guys go at it. Pure professionals.
GREAT video! People should watch past what (appears to be) the end, because then we learn that IF you're going to fluid fill, ONLY use a metal valve stem. (Gotta go check my Kubota now--LOL). Also, GREAT tip about not picking wheel spacers wider than the width of the FEL's bucket. Also, I know that rear wheel spacers can cause your tires to contact the anti-scalp wheels on some mower decks, so check with your dealer, etc..., on that issue, before just ordering your wheel spacers. Courtney's channel and "Tractor Time with Tim" are are the tow, best channels for sub and compact tractors on YT, IMO!
Haha, thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
Our construction company uses the Meekhoff Saginaw location for all of our equipment. Great company! Another good vid, too! 👍🏼👊🏼
Very cool!
Hello Good Works Tractors,
Could you please do a video on emissions/pre-emissions tractors?
-Advantages/disadvantages
-What year/models did things change
I think it would help a lot of folks.
Great video . I may have to get those spacers pretty soon. thx ,have a great guys and be safe. Tim
Thanks Tim!
That thing oughta do really well in the high banks of Talladega.
😂
Wow! That really made a big difference. I think I would also use anti-seize with the aluminum spacers on the lug nuts as well as the mating surfaces of axle and spacer. Dissimilar metals tend to oxidize when mated together and it may make them difficult to separate.
Why wouldn't a manufacturer that's been making spacers for 25 years include this in their installation instructions? Seems like they would if it had repeatedly caused their customers issues over the years? They call for anti sieze with the steel spacers, but not aluminum.
@@GoodWorksTractors That is a very good question.
@@GoodWorksTractors The aluminum spacers are anodized. The anodized surface is non conductive, non corrosive and extremely hard. Nothing better for corrosion protection than anodized aluminum, not even most stainless steels.
Fyi, in structural engineering we call it Galvanic corrosion and its where two dis-similar metals come into contact with each other. You can prevent that with rubber or neoprene spacer. Plastics usually do not weather well.
@@GoodWorksTractors anti seize for sure! Many things that require anti seize things rust. I anti seize most things just because a manufacturer doesnt recommend something dont mean chit!
I have been looking for wheel spacers for my John Deere 3038e, thank's a lot. Keep up the great videos.
Glad you enjoyed!
There is no doubt that the wider rear tire spacing provided by the Bora spacers will help for stability. Just be aware that the rear tires will now be outside the width of the standard bucket on the FEL. That can cause difficulties digging and moving material. The extra tire spacing will also put the tires outside the width of your existing 3PH implements purchased to match the standard rear tire spacing.
Every decision has a trade off. Plan ahead.
I had NO IDEA that tire spacers were an issue; in such expensive pieces of machinery. Growing up, wheel spacers were used to accommodate over sized tires for muscle cars; deemed unsafe by many. I fast forward 40 years & here I am reading about these rather expensive pieces of machinery "requiring" wheel spacers to prevent tipping over? Am I getting this right?
This definitely appears to be an above average tire shop.
Haha yes, very above average 😂
If you set the parking brake on the pickup the whole thing won't roll. Automatic trans only has a steel bearing used during Park. You could potentially cause damage not braking.
Nice tire shop never have known how they removed those rear tire.
Yeah makes it easy!
Get some large fender flares on it like the 66R has. That will make it look better. Will the flares on the 66R go on the 4720? I think they will but not 100%. Yes, switching wheels may help too because your 3" looks way way wider than my 3" BORA set up on my 52R. Mine had to be 60" center to center tire tread to be center going down 30" corn or bean rows. Love my set up and love these spacers from Lenny at BORA
I'm curious to find out about the fender flares. The axle in this tractor seems to be extra wide. Kind of strange.
I've had 2 aluminum spacers split at the stud. When you dont have weight concerns steel is way better!
When I blade snow I need as much weight as possible for traction. I even weight the blade with 6 weights. I have loaded front tires to give me some steering and to add dead weight when winching trees out of the woods (need to use wheel chocks in this case). Note Bora does not make spacers for rear tires on JD 670 and there is not enough space to put on chains. Cheers.
That's a bummer! Yeah, probably need spacers just to fit the chains. What about tire studs?
@@GoodWorksTractors I thought about doing studs too as I average 300-400 hours per winter doing driveways with my 3039r but then I'd have to get a second set of tires for the summer, I road my tractor between clients so chains are a no go as wisconsin doesn't allow. I bought a $100 tire groover off Amazon and cut some "x's" in my r4 tires and it was a night and day difference. Haven't noticed any additional wear or negative side affects. I also loaded my front tires to aid in front end traction, I actually drain them for summer use to cut down on wear. I fill them myself with a $8 valve from TSC and use a submersible pump in a bucket with washer fluid. Thanks for the video, I bought some aluminum 3" spacers and WOW what a difference.
@@GoodWorksTractors The weights work out fine. I use 14 weights plus loaded tires and then two large ammo cans of lead and iron. That plus the blade and the snow blade addition gives me plenty of traction for all but on ice. Also, chains would tear up my asphalt driveway and the road.
Probably go with 2” Bora’s on my new L2501HST with the new R14 style tires.
Good luck and enjoy!
Did I miss the size of the spacers? I need to send them to my dealer; I can only go up to 3.5 inches at max per side so they would fit the trailer.
I think I missed it but what size wheel spacers did you install? I put 2” on mine and flipped the wheels for or a total of 3 1/2” per side. Made a big difference. Just need rear wheel weights now.
Yeah I think I forgot to mention...3" spacers
Good job,bat in indonesia
Di indonesia agak susah untuk type r series
Great informative video! Those were some serious Jack Stands! How much does a tractor that size weigh?
Haha, no doubt. Around 6,000 lbs with the cab and loaded tires.
Courtney do you think there is any problem with reversing the front tires on the tractor to widen that stance? There are those who think it puts to much strain on the front axles and bearings.
I think if the manufacturer made the front wheels reversible, then it should be fine. Some will have limitations listed in the manual for when to use or not use the wider stance on the fronts.
My dealer filled my rear tires with windshield washer fluid. He claims that the beet juice is so thick that it becomes hard to pump out on tire change out.
Any opinion on windshield washer fluid for the purpose of adding ballast ? Glad you kept the 4720, I have one also. Regards
A lot of folks use washer fluid. I just had beet juice squirt out all over me last week. I can verify that it remains very liquid, no gelling.
Could you give me the tire sizes front and rear that you went with on the 4720? I see the rears are 16.9, not the standard 17.5 listed for the original R4s. I would like to replicate this setup on my own 4720. Thank you.
Question on liquid loading: I had the rears filled on my Yanmar YT359 (59-hp, same tractor as Wranglerstar). Normal operation I don't notice much, except road transport. At higher transport speeds I have a vibration that shakes my tooth fillings! Is this a normal downside of loaded tires?
I've not experienced that with loaded tires.
So I recently installed some 2” BORA spacers on my tractor. I noticed the instructions mention that you should re-torque at 5 miles. Just wondering if for a tractor that would be something like 10 hours.
What size spacers are good for an LX2610? I was thinking about 5” in rear and 3” in front
If you operate the equipment within its limits you will have no problem
Accidents can happen even when operating within limits. Hidden objects, equipment failures, and other outside influences equally affect all of us.
I second that. It is by the grace of God that my 3035D did not roll when the edge gave way and it slide down a 3 ft ditch sideways into a tree. It should have flipped. ALWAYS FILL YOUR TIRES. I questioned it on purchase. No regrets now.
I have to say, it is a cool video, but that 4720 looks completely ridiculous with that amount of wheel spacing. But awesome video!
I agree. Completely ridiculous. I'll be rotating the wheels at some point.
Does Adam have any opinions on tire sealants like Tireject or Slime?
Since we’re talking tires, at what PSI are your versa turf set at. I recently added a set for my BX and I have them set at the max as per what’s indicated on the tire, 22 Front and 20 Rear but I find when I load the bucket I’m afraid it might be too heavy for the front tires 🤷🏼♂️🙂. They do give you a different ride compared to the R4. Thanks 👍🏻
I keep my Versa Turfs a pound or two under the max rating. I haven't felt a ride difference, but have noticed a night and day traction difference in all conditions.
@@GoodWorksTractors Thanks Courtney, BTW sorry for your loss. We loss one of our Main Coon cats in April and it was tough. Take care!
Foam fill front tires
What size of pressure washer do you use too washer your tractors
We use an adjustable PSI washer. Not necessary but it gives us more flexibility.
How often do you need to retorque the spacers? Seems like a pain with tires that heavy
If you own a compact Deere there goes your warrantee!!! My John Deere dealer would not add them on to a new tractor (cuz John Deere housings are aluminum) therefore I did not buy a deer!
There's plenty of JD dealers that install them for customers on brand new tractors. I've asked routinely for clear information that spacers void warrt. To this day, I've never received it.
@@GoodWorksTractors ok, but my dealer would not install them and it cost him the sale!!!
Well what brought you to that decision? I have some concern with how much those tires stick out looks like it would cause strain on the axels I could be way wrong.
Is it better to tip over?
Could cost the same to break axels as it would be to tip over obviously if you don’t get hurt in that process. But I was only stating it looked as if it put strain on the axels it’s your tractor do what you wish obviously, take it on out to 18 inch extension.
They are 3" spacers. There's other differences at work. Tire width and dish direction. 2-3" spacers are added on machines every day if the year. If widespread failures were occurring, then you would find stories all over the internet and wheel spacers companies wouldn't exist. Sure seems you're being highly dramatic about a routine modification.
@@GoodWorksTractors not at all was saying it looked concerning with the mod you did or with anyone doing it, merely a comment kinda like watching a tree next to house that might fall on it concerning but it has to come down to aid in keeping limbs off the house for safety. But when it comes to the questions being asked is it better to tip over? Come on now that was a bit smart. All you you tubers say like comment subscribe I commented as you have asked before for general purpose of discussion. You also missed where I was wondering how you made your decision so obviously my concern was not so much the wheel spacers.
Fender extensions next.
I think you're right.
Let’s talk about when the 4066 is going on the website ???
Haha hopefully next week
I’ll be watching, been talking with the local deer dealer and got numbers, so interested where your will come in at. Loved the video and love the channel.
Thank you sir. Have a great weekend!
How come they don’t use a wheel Jack, would be allot easier
I guess they're a bunch of rookies. I'm sure you would have done much better. 👍
How does a guy get into a business like you.
Calculated risk taking, haha!
Sorry but I don't like how the tractor looks with the spacers.
I'm not concerned.
That will be nearly impossible to roll over (looks a little goofy) but definitely more stable.
Haha yeah I may actually flip flop the rear wheels. Mainly to track better with the fronts. No problems with stability now though!!
Kinda like some of the trucks around here in TN. All it needs now is a way to squat the rear and you'll be one of the cool kids! I bet it is really stable though. Love the videos!
@@RockyX13 It slays me when truck owners make their pickups LESS capable of being TRUCKS (i.e., hauling stuff) by taking out the "rake" the engineers designed into the vehicle. So-called "cool" looks that kill functionality are NOT cool, at least in the REALITY-BASED community.
What's with the accent?
Tire, fire, hire = toyyure, foyure, hiyure
You and Savage Geese have the same accent
Fun fact. Everyone has an accent.
@@GoodWorksTractors I'm just trying to identify the region. Is it just Michigan? Is there a group of States?
I would never buy another tractor with industrial tread tires they're worthless
What is the math for wheel spacers and ballast used in tandem?
Adam is a wheel wizard. I always struggle with my bigger tires. Wish we had a mobile service out here, have to bring them in myself. 🙂
He's really a great guy and great service every time.
going wider does make for more stability but it puts more load on the bearings of dead axles.
Of course
Your new "wide-glide" looks like "axel-snap" in the making. Maybe a set of some out-bound "training wheels" will work too. Other than that, always an informative vidio. Mr. Adam really knows his tractor tire stuff.
For half the video I thought that guy was talking while he was working, and I was thinking " This guy is a freaking machine. He is a machine that way he was slapping those tires on and off, but I thought he was reciting all that tire info while he was running the impact wrench and i was like "Damn!"
😂
Regarding punctures, why not use green slime or another type tire sealant?
How long did it take in total tile to replace them? JD dealer is telling me 3 hours to put on 3-inch spacers, no wheel weights? Took me less than an hour to do the fronts.
Maybe an hour?
@@GoodWorksTractors@GoodWorksTractors, thank you for the reply. I called them back as I thought there was no way they would take that long; they were already finished. It took them 2.5 hours to install 3-inch rear spacers, which is very disappointing.
In an application where people need ballast, which is every compact tractor, why not use steel spacers?
Spacers are so small on most of these tractors, that the weight is insignificant. Steel requires priming, painting, and anti sieze. Aluminum is more straightforward. You're welcome to get steel though!
@@GoodWorksTractors I wish you had explained all these advantages to the aluminum hub-centric wheels on my pick-up a few years back when I had to put my floor jack between the wheel and the spring pack to remove the wheel from the hub:) I think some of this advantage may be due to you changing things so often, aluminum does take longer to be a problem.
I understand that some people need the width to help with tip, but damn that looks silly going that far out.
I'll probably reverse the wheels to bring it in a bit more.
Courtney I know this is an older video but I just ordered a 1025r and my dealer said they could only get turf or r4s but I’m on a farm and could care less about tearing up the grass so I’d like an r1 is there one you would recommend for the 1025r?
I see a way to fix this problem of thorns puncturing the tubes. In the mountain bike world they make a tire liner to protect the tube, I don't see why it wouldn't work for compact tractors too. It was like a very tough plastic that went inside the tire.
I was hoping you'd keep the 4720! Good choice!
Ha, thanks!
Yeah me too. I assumed he’d keep the newer rig!
Great video. I thought i needed to put ballast in my front tires on my 2305 I know now that i don't need to waste the money to put ballast in them. As always if you have a question check on GWT videos the answer is probably there>
That’s his opinion. It does add extra Weight so how is it a waste?
Great video.... and music
Glad you enjoyed it!
