1981-1991 IMSA GT Prototypes - 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion

- The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion attracts some of the rarest cars and gives some 550 owners the chance to compete in their vintage race cars against cars from the same era and class.
While the largest chunk of cars participating will be sports cars and prototypes from the 1960s and 1970s, there is tremendous variety. Get there early enough, and you can see cars from Pre-1940 battle it out on Laguna Seca’s famed corkscrew turn, sporting wooden wheels that flex and groan over bumps and through corners.

www.automobilem...
that rotary engine, man its beautiful
That Mazda is just wonderful isn’t it. The livery the looks and that noise!
I love that they talked about the liveries, they truly are works of art.
Haha yeah I liked how they brought that up too.
i only clicked because i saw orange and green in the thumbnail
Same
Isaac Brilhart
Yup
Brings back a lot of memories watching these cars on TV when I was a kid, announced perfectly with David Hobbs.
The best sports car/prototype racing of all.time!!!
It's lovely how majestic those classic prototypes are, if only they weren't such rare and classic pieces they could race them harder in these kinds of events, but I'm still enjoying seeing this.
Everyone is talking about mazda orgasmic sound. But no ones talking about that #14 porshe 962c overtakes. Man bruce canepa was on fire.
I was actually kind of happy he had to drop out. guy damn near took out 2 cars in the first few turns...that's way too aggressive in these cars.
Looked like he was the only one racing. Everyone else just cruising.
DHFHades drive it like you stole it😂😂
I want to see these things still race! Parts are still easily found and if your Canepa you can just make them!
He didn't take risks, guys were breaking in places not normal and way early for cars with that much aero.
imagine if the mazda driver runs for real!!
Man, I used to love watching GTP racing back in the 80s. I was still young and single and traveled to a bunch of different venues to watch them. The Mazda didn't race in GTP, did it? I'm thinking it was Group C only. I'm surprised we didn't see a Nissan in the mix. Those were just about as dominant as the Toyotas. IIRC, they were king of the road up until Toyota got into the mix. The Mazda sounds absolutely fabulous but so did the Jaguar. The Mazda is my favorite tune of the bunch, perhaps because I'm biased. /points left
Yes the four rotor rotor Mazda did race raced in IMSA-GTP. Mazda campaigned the Lee Dykstra designed RX-792P.
Some of the coolest racing there ever was.
Stunning cars, thanks to the owners for letting us see these awesome machines racing again!
IMSA camel GT series GTP GTO GTU, Best cars and drivers of all time. Derek Bell, Scott Pruitt, David Hobbs ETC.
to bad the toyota 88c isnt in there but what an epic event , legendary cars all of them
Thank you for putting this up, guys. I never got to see these cars race live, but modern coverage is a beautiful look for these cars
Beautiful cars! Great era! 👍
Beautiful machines ❤️
This white racer with the Canon logo on the body so easily traversed the track and so easily overtook its rivals, as if it were racing with shopping carts.👍😊
Darn it, wish Canepa's 962 stayed healthy, really wanted to see him take it to the AAR!
Yeah he was ripping around hard from the very beginning! Came up so fast on that Coca Cola 962 that it didn't look like he saw Canepa take the outside and bumped him!
Guys, its the 767B!! Big difference here :)
During a race week visit to Motor Imports, the local San Antonio Jaguar dealership, the 44 was fired up outside and the sound caused the big glass showroom windows to wave.
Excellent driving by Bruce Canepa in that white #14 Canon 962. Came up so quick on that Coca Cola 962 that he received some contact cause he just wasn't ready.
There should be an all-prototype racing serie with all the classes such as LMPs, Group C, IMSA and LM GTP cars, LM GT1, Daytona Prototypes, Group 5 and 6, hillclimb prototypes, etc.... With both modern and classic cars.
Everyone: *racing friendly*
Number 14: i took it personality
The best cars IMO
Oh, man! The memories!
Only thing you can hear is that screaming 4 rotor 787b
Danky D it is a 767B.
The 767B would have been too old for this series wouldn't it?
Mark Anderson oh my bad I keep saying 787b
Triangles triangles triangles!!!! 787b
The sacred Doritos of life are in that car.........
AWESOME DUDE!!!!
First ! For the first time! I'm happy!! Really nice cars! Great Video!!
I fxxking love this
this race video was released many months ago, but i guess motor trend broke the videos down into race groups where before it was coverage of the entire day of all race groups. my shelby is parked on turn 3 as you can see it from camera 3, i live 8 mins from laguna seca, i am blessed to live here, canepa would of won if not for engine trouble
Damn, blessed indeed, that's awesome.
Yeah he was ripping around hard from the very beginning! Came up so fast on that Coca Cola 962 that it didn't look like he saw Canepa take the outside and bumped him!
A great Christmas gift MT
This kinda sums up perfectly how Mazda's sports prototypes perform; they'll only gain places when the faster cars in front break down. That's on top of the fact that a rotary moving up it's rev range sounds like the engineer who made screaming at an ever increasing pitch as his testicles are slowly crushed in a bench vice.
Well when you know what's going to happen, why stand in the way? Key aspect of winning is the ability to look ahead and to do it further than your opponent. Nothing new.
Back in year 1992 IMSA races on this track, P.J. Jones Eagle MK3 has set the track recorded 1:11 Sec.,The Eagle MK3 is fast on corner&straight line speed, bc big of down force.
1:11 is absolutely nuts for a track like LS
Nice
That 4-rotor.
Love he 787b
mazda for life
Was that a Police car in the background @ 7:20?
All that's missing are Camel cigarettes, illicit Columbian powder, white blazers, day glow t-shirts, pleated linen trousers, penny loafers with no socks, and Serengeti Driver sunglasses. Those were the days.
race is missing the Nissan's twin turbo's
Quad-rotary engine sound is only thing needed to enjoy any race. And that\s why the hybrid F1 age is awful to spectators, much more without having enough overtakes apart from the DRS made ones. Sound, colors and overtakes-battles are what make motor-racing great.
giorx5 the 4 rotor is inefficient and slower then pistons. F1 was getting 985hp out of 2.4 NA/v8. & 900hp our of 1.6 turbo v6. The rotor is not needed
giorx5 I’ll take the Cadillac prototype that won the imsa championship this year. V8 FTW
Big mistakes that show ignorance of the topic. 2.4 V8 made less than 850 at their best. 3.0 V10 had close to 1000 though. And 787B motor could get close to 900 if let to rev higher. Resticted was 700 for the 24H. F1 engines couldn't last more than 3H there.
giorx5 if let unrestricted theses v8s run 1000hp 20,000 rpm the 4 rotor ain’t reving like that
ruclips.net/video/_HwHgEWnpfs/видео.html
giorx5 the 787b got lucky at Le Mans too!!!
not too sure about their decision to not include 92-93 GTP cars. Also why are group c cars allowed in this if 92-93 GTP cars aren't?
I really don't think getting the decals is one of the harder things to get for these cars, so many custom wrap and decal shops these days, even really high end.
isnt that toyota eagle mk III from 1993?
Remember when he got one Rob Kelsey for the Christmas football party and you have to say honey I got to go upstairs the man's not feeling too good feed
tom dooley must be my uncle somewhere in the family tree
God rotary save us.
The porsche 962 has a boxer 8
Boxer 6'
at first I thought it was iracing lol but it didn't make sense lol
Still working on my toe thyroids to make more cars
It's Forza Motorsport 7 in real life.
I want more cheap truck and roadkill
Listen, the Mazda 767 is the best car in the race, yes? i think we can all agree on that.
How can it be the best car when it wasn't competitive..... It won 1 race out of 23 races in 2 years of FIA championship..........
Spoiler alert!.......Charles Nearburg wins. :)
Just leave Pantera at the salvation army restore let me pick it up for 20 or 30 bucks
Such a great toyota so great it couldn't win LeMans 🙄
The problem with this event for years, is you have a few handy drivers and then 'gentlemen' drivers who are MILES off the pace. Shame really, as it has some great entries, but poor racing.
You always told your wife you want to give me one do you have long car rides only talking about it sing I wish I only can drive it would make me a real man
