My father worked at CMS during most of the 1980's, and I saw every one of the Camel GT events in person. They were all good racing to watch. This track just made for interesting racing and, unlike most tracks, you could see the entire event from the grandstands. If anyone ever puts up the 1982-1984 races, they were just as good, better even. If anyone ever questioned the skills of Danny Ongais, watch his drive in 1982. He had nearly been killed at Indy the previous year. If anyone has never seen that Indy crash, look it up. How he did not die is a miracle. A year later and still recovering, he showed up at this event, jumped in a Lola T600, and put on an absolute clinic in his first race after the serious Indy crash. But the best race of the group was easily the race in either 1983 or 1984. My memory can't tell me exactly which year, but anyone that has seen it will know what I am talking about. The Jaguar was fast, real fast. But they kept getting onto trouble and knocking the nose bodywork off of the car. The Jag would get way behind in the pits getting a new nose, then storm back into contention, only to lose another front end. The effort by the Jaguar team was epic, but ultimately fell short. Still, it made for what was easily the best road race I have ever seen. I have no idea if the races before 1985 were televised like this, as I was watching live. If they were aired, someone has to have the video somewhere. Great racing if it ever sees the light of day again.
Awesome! I attended this race when 9 years old with my father. He worked at Town and Country Ford for many years and we would always get tickets from Bruton into many of the r aces. So exciting to see this live as a young boy.
Just came across this video and itÄs just amazing watching this on an early saturday morning in full length. thank you for this upload! greetings from germany
I used to run track days at rovals in the late-80's/early-90's. Pocono, MIS, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Charlotte was my favorite because it had the nicest flow to the infield course, but the transition from the infield to the NASCAR banking was very abrupt, and I rapidly learned to take it at a shallow angle to minimize shock to my car's suspension. Many years later, I finally got to run the Daytona road course, and I really liked that place. I have looked at a video of the revised Charlotte roval, and it doesn't look as fun as the old one; there are a couple of slow turns in the infield that will probably not be loved by the NASCAR drivers.
Andy Harman ok so I’m curious, which corners are you talking about being too slow for the NASCAR drivers because the track revision was supposed to get rid of the really slow corners.
I love that a Ford Probe with kicking ass on a Porsche in the beginning of the race lol..Wow, this is back when racing was still racing no power steering even in those cars, almost no suspension..1000 HP GoCarts..Mean machines to tame
Used to love to watch these guys at Mid-Ohio. The names you read about in magazines were out there in these beasts that sounded so great as they went by.
Thank You Marshall ! As a scale model builder use this video for reference when building and painting applying decals. Thanks again Sir ------ the commercials are a bonus !

Incredible flashback! Is it too cliché to say golden years? This was fantastic racing that received due coverage. Back then I must've taken it all for granted believing it'd never go away - sigh... Thank goodness for reunions. I cannot wait to get back to Monterrey.
Many thanks for posting this Marshall. I’m reading Derek Bell’s book ‘All my Porsche Races’ and this brings it to life. He’s very low key in the section about this race though😂. Subscribed and hoping to discover more.😉
Great to see this race from 1986. Great to see these drivers racing that are now long gone into history. I also have to say that Bill Adam had a little daughter at the time and those who follow IMSA today know her as Shea Adam.
It was just a complete jungle out there, no safety walls by spectators, no speed limits in pits, cars dangerous as could be... love it. I miss seeing those camel cigarette ads all over the pits and tracks. Grew up going to road america, was there in 1989 to see the Nissan vs Jag battles.
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
Yeah, but a V-6 turbo.. it was moving along nicely until the turbo died out..I was hoping #52 Corvette was going to take first and give the North Carolina fans are real show..This is back when racing was still racing no power steering in those cars, 120°+ almost 2 lateral G's..Wow..I do love how those Porsche 962's looked back then
These were the glory days of IMSA. When you had many factories building prototypes to take on Porsche. The fields were full of prototypes of every shape and engine configuration imaginable. I saw them every year at Road America. Then something happened and it all went to shit.
I much rather see simple ballast or air restriction than the complex impossible-to-understand bullshit that is communism applied to racing, also known as BoP. Ballast does not hurt you 100%, the weight can be put down in a way that makes the car more balanced. An air restrictor can make your car softer, easier to handle, not always superharmful. A lot of ballasted and/or air-restricted racecars have won races in close-fought competition. BoP is a lot worse. BoP is what gave us the travesty that was Ford GT's "FAKE WIN" at Le Mans after sandbagging all year long.
Just ballast or just a restrictor is not as damaging as BoP. With BoP they fuck a car in like 5 different ways at once, they change a lot of the car at once. With ballast or the air restrictor it is not as damaging, it can help you in some other way.
@@DanArnets1492 YEAH bop is communism applied to racing.. heck any form of handicaping is communism in racing... just won a race??? that's too bad because you've gained some weight. car makes too much power and defeats the ballast??? how about you now breathe from a straw(restrictor) i mean come on.. its welfare for the lower common denominator. but yeah,i agree that the ford gt's were sandbagging to make their pr coup work. and it is BS but gt3 has to be the worst BOP class in the world... bentleys winning races.... in what universe is this suposed to happen?!?!?!?

When you consider the Ford Probe was powered by a 120 cubic inch 4 cylinder is simply amazing. Especially when you consider the fact it's racing against 900+hp V8"s. That means its running half the cylinders other cars have. I think the MODEL T Ford was powered by a 4 cylinder motor too.
Rovals can be cool. Heck, even parking lot racetracks can be good (ChampCar Denver). I am still a fan of the roval in California Speedway (AMA Superbike used it for years and even had nice races there). The problem is that a lot of ovals have awful infield sections.
Bryon Lape The infield road course has been there since the early days of the speedway. In it's time it has hosted IMSA Camel GT Series, SCCA Trans-Am, Can-Am and National sports cars, and AMA National motorcycle races. There is a picture online of two-time NASCAR champion Joe Weatherly driving a British Lister in an early pro sports car race there. The NASCAR race this year will use most of that course in modified form.

I am so glad in 2021 when watching races. The commentators have been stopped from yapping to much. During the 80's I stopped watching racing on TV because your not allowed to think for yourself as the race is happening. Just got so annoyed by all the yapping. Racing became a platform for commentators to promote their yapping skills. No one can focus on the sounds of the racing engine sounds. Too much talking. Ruined it for me for years. They talk to people like we are deaf dumb and blind. Dam they pissed me off. Like a little kid jumping up and down in front of the television while your trying to watch TV. This was not about racing. This was about promoting your talking skills. Great race though. Went and watched Ludwig race in Portland. Enjoyed that. Got to actually hear the cars and focus on the race. By the way I'm counting, I make them turns 7 and 8 in the infield. The 180-degree right and left turns that are the last before re-entering the oval.
