I have one . Its apart now. Not due to failure but upgrades. Hi comp pistons ... 1198 cams .... but I made sure to lighten that flywheel down to about 6 lbs ...... and will go heavy on the thread locker on that nut ....
How did the rebuild project go? Thanks for showing us the tear-apart and providing the running commentary. It's nice to have some independent opinions on the construction and maintenance of this bike.
@@WingstoWheels I wrote Ducati through my local dealer, no response. This has happened to other people also, My theory is the flywheel nut came loose because of a rattle I heard the day before. Did it get Tq to 330 NM? who knows.....

Hey! Watching in 2023! Thinking about buying a project diavel, I'm a mechanic and going to do the repairs myself I was just curious if you had any digital copies of any of the tech repair manual items you used for yours! If you do would you mind PMing me and we'll talk! Thank you!
Good day sir, Retired mechanic myself, I had no manual for tear down, what kind of project? crash rebuild? I since sold the bike to buy a crate LS7 for the Vette.
@@BretMech No crash rebuild, guys got a 2013 diavel for $2k but needs a crank, sheared off at one of the ends but I wasn't sure if it would just need a crank or if it could possibly need a complete motor rebuild
@@WyoMoto I looked into replacing the crankshaft myself, but it would be thousands of dollars to do a proper rebuild. I found a used engine on the Bay easy drop in replacement.
Hello there. I have a 2013 diavel Carbon. All maintenance was done in the service. While cruising at speeds over 200 in 21 thousand KM, suddenly the crank broke. I applied to Ducati. Ducati repaired the engine block as part of a goodwill guarantee. Many parts have changed. Even the starter motor has changed. But I'm worried. Will it break again in the future? Should I use it or should I sell it? I love my Ducati.
Look into a light weight flywheel, some have done a mod. there is too much mass on that thing. My flywheel nut came loose before the failure, I heard a rattle the day before and can see the markings of where the nut ran up against the case before the failure, I think the harmonics against the splines ( back and forth from nut not holding flywheel to crank) amplified the molecule hardening ( work force embrittlement) and caused the fracture.
@@BretMech Thanks a lot for the answer and explanation. The part code of the newly installed flywheel is different. I hope you noticed the error you noticed and a more durable flywheel is installed.
Good day, the retaining nut that holds the flywheel to the crank came loose first and the flywheel was then allowed to rattle on the splines witch amplified the TQ pulses, this nut was to be TQ to 330 NM, and it came loose before the crank failure. I heard a rattling noise for 2 days before failure....
I am so sorry for what happened, I have an ST3, ST4 and 2019 MS Pikes Peak which has similar engine to Diavel. I hope Ducati can foot some of the bill!
Here is the finished product, ruclips.net/video/n8XeBOQ_B5Y/видео.html Bought a 2015 engine with 2200 miles and used my fuel and IGN setup. the only mod was adapting my Coil over plug to connect to the plug wire that goes into the smaller spark plug hole, ( the 2013 COP will not fit in the 2015 spark plug hole in the head. I dont know what is going on with Ducati, but I think emissions laws are detuning these bikes, 2013 had lower compression than 2015, but their HP stayed the same, with my original 2013 fueling and IGN timing installed on this 2015 higher compression engine, the bike is faster than before. No expert but if you can feel a difference it has got to be at least 10 or 20 HP, and why does the 2019 1260 Diavel have less HP than the 2013 1200 CC engine? I am totally satisfied with my 2013, and one more note, I have read that they put a lighter flywheel on the 2015 engine....maybe to combat this crankshaft breaking issue.
Yea I agree nitrous caused it. Nitrous is notoriously problematic on bottom ends. Quick explanation ....Flywheel side took extra nitrous load from drive side and load was amplified by flywheel itself, that’s why nut loosened and BOOM. Flywheels chatter just like clutch baskets chatter. When add more and more power chatter becomes more and more pronounced. This is what loosened nut. I would say the crankshaft would have held up well if nut didn’t come loose.😎. Very sad to see this though. Hope all goes well and you get it back together quickly.
Thanks for the input, the Nut that holds the flywheel was loose upon disassembly. the tq specs are 330 NM, i heard a rattle noise the day before Wich confirms the loose flywheel. the heavy flywheel inertia was micro hammering the splines from the fire combustion impulses, this caused work force embrittlement and fractured the splines on the non tq side.
You explain it much better than me but yep, that’s what I was trying to say. Really don’t think anything would have failed if it wasn’t for that damn nut coming loose. I raced super bike in the 90’s, had to be my own mechanic and had to troubleshoot some very strange engine failures. Anyway, love Ducati engines especially the Desmo system. Hope you have the ol’ girl back together by now. Thanks for the reply.
Same problem down here in Brazil (São Paulo) with my MTS 2013 with only 15k Miles on it.... its ridiculous such issue... Ducati so far have not offered any help, etc...! I'm Just never even consider any Ducati bike in the future at all... shit bike !!!!
Was the flywheel nut loose? mine backed off and allowed the flywheel to harmonic rattle on the splines until failure. Bought a salvage engine off eBay, only 2200 miles and still going strong. sorry for your loss, I did not get any support from Ducati either.

How much did it cost you to repair it? crankshaft
Parts were more to rebuild it than a used 2015 motor out of a crashed bike, 3500.00 for motor with 2200 miles on it
eBay is your cheapest option...but if you want new... overseas cost nearly half as much as stateside does...can recommend star twin dot com
