  • After its founding in 1965, Ruth's Chris Steak House grew from one New Orleans location to more than 150 restaurants all over the world, thanks to the talent and vision of Ruth Fertel. Fertel, who died in 2002, turned Southern hospitality and sizzling steaks into an empire.
Ruth's Chris is typically in the news for announcements of new restaurant openings or a creative menu promotion. But in 2020, the chain saw a massive backlash when it became engulfed in controversy over taking federal loans meant for small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ruth's Chris Steak House's history is as eccentric and exciting as the city where it was born. There's a lot even the chain's biggest fans may not know about it, like where that weird name came from. So here's the truth about Ruth's Chris Steak House.

The day I arrived home from a combat tour in Iraq in 2007, my then wife, took me to Ruth's Chris, for the first time. I was in uniform, because we stopped there straight from the Armory, on our way home. As we were waiting for a table, the hostess, asked if I was on active duty, I said I had literally gotten off the plane from Iraq not more than an hour earlier. Not only was my meal comp'd, every staff member came to my table and either shook my hand or gave me a hug to welcome me home. It was a very pleasant experience.

Was fortunate to meet her when I was on the opening staff of the first location in the NYC market. I think the staff did not know what to make of her this older southern woman. That first day she went into the kitchen to cook staff meal for us. Well I not being shy and curious approached her and asked what she was cooking."Gumbo" she replied. "What's Gumbo?" I inquired. " Well you make it with okra" I said Ms Fertell you're in NJ we have no idea and she laughed and explained the dish to me. I became a fan of NOLA cooking after meeting her. Visited there around 20 times including several Mardi Gras and eventually managed a NOLA inspired restaurant and jazz place. Thank You Ms Fertell you were an inspiration.

I barely got one minute into the video but hats off to Ruth's Chris in Las Vegas in the Harrah's Casino. I had a reservation for 7 people then later found that 6 more of our family made a separate reservation same time (my daughter's 21st birthday just this past summer 2021). When we approached the host and asked if by chance we can be seated within the same proximity they went a step above. There was a single private room they allowed us to dine together as a family and we all thought it was a nice gesture by the establishment to provide that. The visit was so on point with the service and food! We look forward to another visit soon!

Don’t confuse snobbery and criticism. Helpful criticism is how we learn to correct mistakes, should they be determined to BE mistakes, after which we never make that mistake or those mistakes again. Which improves us. However, being human, there will always be more mistakes. Except when criticism is offered in social media. People don’t see it as an opportunity for improvement, they see it as a personal insult/attack. When did society get so thin-skinned?
OTOH, I have zero criticism about the food or service at Ruth’s Chris, but I sure as hell have bones to pick with the way upper management handles public relations. Accepting and profiting majorly from PPP government assistance by finding and exploiting loopholes is opportunistic, uncaring,, and just plain shitty. What do the CEO and their immediate lower-level staff rake in each year, compared to what we Working Class minions earn just to make ends meet? This is how the vast majority of corporations operate; I’m sorry to hear that Ruth’s Chris is another predatory entity, although with great food :(

About 30 minutes later his much younger wife came in with her date and were seated across the restaurant. Neither knew the other was there. Ruth Chris is such an amazing restaurant the steak is amazing and I have tried multiple steak places in DC. Whenever I am feeling a steak and do not want to cook my own I just make my way to Ruth Chris . It doesn't even have to be an occasion I just go because I want a great steak and my palate wont allow me to get anything less !

I lived in the 4th largest city so no short of big names steak house, but RC is my favorite. Their NY Strip steak is consistent, firm but tender, and served in a hot plate. Their cocktail shrimps is the best in the world! Large fresh jumbo size and the meat are firm/crunch served along with baby arugula lettuces is a must for me at RC.

Best Steak I’ve ever had was just off the highway somewhere in Nebraska
A massive Barn converted into a restaurant literally across the street from a cornfield. Tacky pictures of cows & Steer Heads all over the walls, 50-60 picnic tables lined up in rows & an open kitchen at the back. Not really a kitchen just a massive 20’ grill, huge pots of steaming corn & potatoes wrapped in foil baking in this large wood fired oven.
All they had on the menu was Steak, Baked Potato, Corn, Burgers & hot dogs for the kids & the Desert of the day! That’s it…..Nothing Else….Ever.
The Menu was just a list of the different cuts of beef & the price per pound.
    I’ll have a 1 1/2 Rib Eye” ….A 3/4 lb NY Strip” ….“ 2 lb Porter House” etc.
The taste of the beef was like nothing I’ve ever had before & just fork tender & juicy.
Anyway, Ruth’s Chris cooks a great steak but I thought the steak at this barn/restaurant in the middle of nowhere Nebraska was even better.

I don't. A steak has to "rest" to be in a condition to eat. Otherwise, the contracting proteins in the meat will squeeze the juice out onto the plate as soon as you cut it and it will be dry in the middle.

For a special first date, wanted something special for us. Had the worst steak of my life served to me at Ruth's Chris Steak House. Filet Mignon, burnt on the side, raw inside, not just bloody but appeared to have been just cut off the cattle, throw into the cowboy firepit, and tossed on a plate. So bad, I showed my waiter who was shocked. They comped my meal and served a perfectly delightful replacement. So that's the good and bad of my first and only experience.

Regardless, almost everyone can enjoy an expensive meal at a nice restaurant on occasion.
