    Hey Chris, when I set my EOS-R to 10 bit in C-Log, it's only giving me to options to shoot - 4K at 29.97P, and 4K at 23.98P, neither of which shows All-I and not even IPB. Any suggestions?

    Thank you for such great video - I know that you mentioned that, but just wanted to be clear here - could I shoot 1080p with Ninja and R, will I get the benefits using the external recorder? I do not care about the length of video - I mostly shoot max 5min. But I care about the picture quality - is it better to shoot 4K and downscale (which i really do not want for size-wise reasons) or is 1080p crispy as well? Thank you.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +2

      Hi Matej, I use the Ninja in and the EOS R with 1080p all the time and it is great. The difference in quality is much less noticeable at this resolution though. Personally I would not buy the Ninja V if all I want is "better quality recording in 1080p".
      But if you also appreciate the bigger screen, scopes, and such, then it's still a worth wile investment.

      Hi Mike, the 10bit with the Canon EOS R is only available in 4k.
      Thus you can use 10bit ProRes with 4k at 24fps (and the other available frame rates) but not at 1080p at all.

    Thanks for making this thorough video about this. I couldn't figure out how to get 24 in 1080 and I was pretty bummed. I don't know how people use the massive files of 4k video if they're making a lot of videos. I couldn't store that much footage...

  • @ansonh7495
    @ansonh7495 3 года назад +1

    Armando Ferreira from his video claimed that the 10 bit output to Ninja v is way sharper than the internal 8 bit. Did you experience this at all? From your tests it seems like the internal recording of the R is just not as detail/sharp as external recording regardless of 8 or 10 bit, can you confirm this? Thanks.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +2

      I personally found the difference to be very small in this regard. However, I also do not necessarily punch in a whole lot or do this kind of sharpness pixel peeping.
      Then again, if you are going to shoot 4k, then there is really no good reason not to use the 10bit.
      I personally use 1080p most of the time and thus the 10bit is not even an option because of the EOS R not offering it.
      Hope that helps.

    Great video on specs. Love the test graphics. I just purchased a Ninja V+ and wonder what might be your insight on recommend settings and if we can get any form of C-Log (or RAW) that isn't going to be 12 minutes per 500G card.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад

      Guess that heavily depends on the format you'd like to record as well as the resolution and framerate. If you record the H.265 codec (not sure if that's included with the V+ or if it's a paid firmware feature there as well). But generally the H.265 would be a great low storage needs codec.
      But if quality matters and you really want to utilize C-Log… then you're going to be stuck with huge files in ProRes or RAW.

    @ChrisSpiegl I am wondering if the external recording of C-Log 1080p 8-Bit 4:2:2 with ProRes is so much better than the internal C-Log 1080p 8-Bit 4:2:0 that it would justify buying the Atomos Ninja V? I thought the recorder would make an addition that improves the EOS R very much, but because the 10-Bit is restricted to 4k I can not use it due to the crop. Any insight on this?

      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +1

      @@Petramojomusic Hello, ok, with that I think I can give you a better answer. For the purpose of live streaming, I would not buy the Ninja.
      The Ninja is a great monitor, and it can also apply a LUT and then you can use that in Live streaming. BUT: and that's a big BUT. For live streaming, you will not see a difference - especially once everything is processed and sent through the internet in like 5000 Kbps.
      The Ninja is only worth it if you also want to use it to record the Cameras HDMI feed + have a monitor + want to make use of the ProRes files that come out of it for editing.
      But for live streaming - there are better solutions (and one of which is to use OBS and apply a LUT there). You can still use c-log in the camera that way.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jeetin, yes you can absolutely record 1080p with the NinjaV and the EOS R.
      Please also refer to these videos ruclips.net/video/6CI8YBa1bZw/видео.html / ruclips.net/video/_FlbVRU16fM/видео.html for more details about some special things about that setup (namely that in 1080p you can only send 60fps or exact 24fps out the HDMI port).
      Additionally, the Ninja V will always "record" 10 bit, however, in 1080p the EOS R only outputs 8bit. Which still helps make the recording better to work with and also a bit nicer in in extreme grades, but not that vastly different.

    Biggest bummer....EOS R cant export 4K 60FPS at 10-bit, highest is 30FPS. Sucks for us shooting b-roll to SLOW MO in editing. This doesnt get mentioned much and is just a limitation of the EOS-R. Might have to go R6 or Blackmagic for "budget" 10-bit 4K 60FPS.
    Please correct me if Iʻm wrong.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +2

      Sorry to say, but you are not wrong and I do not think that this is "not mentioned". It's just a fact that the Tech Specs of the EOS R do not allow for 4k 60fps at all, in no way.
      And yes, you would have to go R6 or similar for this if you want to stay with Canon - and you would also get the benefit of 4k Full Frame instead of the 1.8x Crop the EOS R has.
      However, I would hold out if you can a few more months. Maybe - just maybe - Canon will bring a EOS Rm2 and get us 4k60 at full frame? At least I am hoping that will happen.
