      I'd be curious how far that tang actually goes. Maybe a magnet test? As a $10 knife... does it measure up to the same quality as a Mora Craftline Basic 511? Would you have put the same stresses on a Mora 511 as you did on the Cold Steel Budget? How do they compare?
      That being said...I'm generally pretty leary of "Walmart anything" as far as lasting quality is concerned outside of some staples. Most stuff will make do for awhile... but I usually am not expecting is to last for years of hard use. I've never bought anything from Walmart and put it through hard use testing and expected gold. Press board bookshelves have held up... but not without needing to turn the shelves over occasionally to get the "bow" out of them. Cargo Shorts have lasted for awhile... but not without fading colors and replaced buttons. Kitchen pans wear out faster than quality versions, budget electronics fail after a couple years...etc.
      It's only the most basic stuff like lodge cast iron, steel bowls, glass cups... that generally hold up well. After awhile you kinda know what will universally hold up well no matter where you buy it.
      I'm much less pessimistic about Cold Steel selling out than many people. Just because Lynn isn't the owner doesn't mean that there aren't some of the same people in the company still doing the same quality control. Granted I haven't looked into the corporate structure of Cold Steel... but that usually doesn't change over night. If Cold Steel suddenly started to really suck... there would be outrage videos and reviews all over the internet and I haven't seen anything so far. So adding "Budget Cold Steel" through Walmart doesn't surprise me... as there have been other brands that have extreme budget branded stuff through Walmart without the overall product quality going down on their mainline products.

      Agreed 20 bucks for 2 beaters that will actually take a beating that's a good deal in my book. People get all elitist and snobbish about their knives but honestly I end up using my cheap ones more often than not because I don't care if I break them or scratch them up. If I break a 200$ knife I'm going to be upset. 10$ knife no Fs given. I like to keep my racing knives mint "just in case." Lol I for one am pretty excited to see an ultra budget option from coldsteel.

      @@sinisterswordsman25 doing bushcraft with stone age/bronze age tools really opened my eyes to how unnecessary it is to have some super steel knife with full tang. I get the survival aspect but make no mistake a lot of it is just equipment sport. I get that if you actually craft things with your knife like bows you want to have good steel but most people just carve feathers and cut notches. It's one big game of optimizing the technology to give maximum performance. I don't care if I have to sharpen my knife once in 25 minutes. I have time. The reason I am in the forest is that I wanted to escape the clock.

      @@ReasonAboveEverything that's really interesting man. The quantity and quality of knives we have nowadays is pretty substantial. Even cheap ones are pretty durable. I bought one of those cheap schrade "scimitar" machetes at Canadian tire like 10 years ago. Yeah it chips a little and the edge rolled or bent I guess is a better word. I just put it on my anvil(again cheap) and hit it with a hammer. It's still good and the steel is soft so it's quick and easy to fix and sharpen. It cost me 15$ I think and I've beat the hell out of it. That said if I was being left on dessert island or something and I was "trusting my life to it" I would want something higher quality. but realistically we're not doing anything like that.

    Sad to see cold steel go this way but it is what it is. Cold steel was the company that actually got me into quality folders and dog got me into fixed blades. I remember my first cold steel was a recon one and I loved that knife though I eventually sold it lol. Now a days my tastes in knives are refined slot more so honestly I haven't bought a cold steel knife in a long time bc I just don't like that crazy over the top stuff as much anymore though it's still badass and mostly functional. The cold steel lawman was also a great folder from cold steel, it is a little sad they've went this direction as I'm sure in another decade we will all look back and think, man I miss some of this badass knives cold steel use to make.

    I totally agree with what your conclusion is here. Branding is branding, but I've always suggested to our customers not to buy brands... buy products. Product quality varies even within individual brands. You can't judge an entire brand just by one product, because there are many different quality levels that a brand will slap their name on. 3CR13 is 3CR13; fairly rust resistant, easy to ReSharpen. But bravo to ColdSteel for making a budget option fixed blade. This is nearly a wholesale cost for a 2-pc knife set of this size and style. I would compare it to a lot of the Master Cutlery or Wuu Jau options for fixed blades, that have the same blade steel.
    You get what you pay for, in terms of materials. This set looks awesome for an entry level consumer as a gateway drug or cheap gift. If you want something that will last many more moons, most definitely choose something with a better blade steel. Sanrenmu offers 8Cr and Sandvik options for a few bucks more, and without the lower-end injected nylon fiber handle scales.

    I had bought a pair of these at WalMart and earlier today I took the red one out with me to use as a mini machete. It worked great cutting briar laden vines and shaved the grey off of my fatwood gatherings. It actually split a very nice piece of fatwood without any batoning. In rsgular wood it does make a deep cut. I use a Wal Mart hand axe for harvesting fatwood and a Hawke saw that eats up fatwood without any problem cutting through the stumps. I did have to sharpen the blade on the Cold Steel mini machetes before I could take it out, the factory edge wasn't up to my specs. For self defense these knives would be great just push and twist. These are not bowies and the only category they fit is the machete category and so far they seem to be great for that purpose. I am not unhappy with my purchase. I have to disagree with you about them not being cold steel knives because they are wonderful machetes that can be used in tight places where a long machete would be too cumbersome. Lynn at Cold Steel had assured his following that there would be no difference in quality and that some new innovations would be coming out by the new owners who promised to keep the quality Lynn based the company on. It might be a good idea to call up Cold Steel and give them some feedback on these knives. I am sure they would appreciate it and they can inform you of what direction the company is going. Again I believe these were meant to be mini machetes, a niche in the knife market that was sorely needed. Bowie knives can do tbe job but not as nicely as a much thinner blade. The steel used in these knives and the temper and flexibility are a great combination. Thanks for the heads up video, I have been interested in finding out what others think about the knives or mini machetes. They are superb in shaving bark and skin off of wood. They are also great at cutting small twigs and limbs off of trees and saplings. They are great at cutting viney thorns and things that get in your way, some vines will even trip you while others may scratch or cut your face or swipe your hat off or get caught in your back pack. The woods I usually trapse through are very viny here in NC. Take care ! A friend always !

I expected them to have higher function than other knives in the same category (price and style). Why? Because I don’t think the guys at Cold Steel would enter this market without something in the design that makes it better than most $10 knives. And I say so far I was correct with that assumption. I actually really like the feel of the knives, only I would like it to be a little heavier, but that’s just preference. I can appreciate a light knife, but if I got a big un, I like some heft to it. • @ordinarynonplayercharacter2142
      @ordinarynonplayercharacter2142 Год назад +1

      You can carefully remove the rubber grip by folding and sliding the one piece rubber over mold down. The guard is held on by a tiny block of steel welded in place. If the guard is loose the block could of been welded bad, wrong, ect but you could easily fix it by carefully heating the guard and using silver solder to fill the gap that’s allowing it to move. Then put the rubber over mold back on.

    • @garageman_
      @garageman_ Год назад

      @@ordinarynonplayercharacter2142 Thank you for the advice, but the rubber handle is still very attached, the guard rattles when I chop but from what I can feel there is no play in the rubber. Any ideas for a less "invasive" measure to fix it?

    • @TheScotchaholic
      @TheScotchaholic Год назад +1

      @@garageman_
      Your best non-invasive move to stop the rattle is to use rubbing alcohol and thoroughly clean the guard and it's surrounding areas, let dry, then apply a high strength liquid epoxy, that you have to mix. See if you can find Devcon 2 ton epoxy.
      Apply on both of the guard connecting to the tang/handle, of course. Apply as much or little as you want, and use a razor or sand paper/Dremel to remove the excess after the epoxy has hardened.
      Just be careful to avoid hitting the guard when using, since epoxies are the quick method of "welding".
      Good luck!

    There is a old adage in advertising ........." You don't sell the steak , you sell the

    that sells knives . Big difference .

    • @michaelbeams9553
      @michaelbeams9553 Год назад

      With all due respect , you take
      the term " To make " too literally .
      Of course there wasn't a Cold
      Steel factory , they sub contracted
      out the work (often to Cam.), but
      if C.S. had a vision for a knife ,
      had that design manufactured to
      their specs. , they caused that
      knife to be made . I don't care who
      cut out the blade , cast a guard or
      hammered a rivet .
      I do however see your point , in my poor word choice . Thanks for the
      reply . Peace , Be Free .
