I have a feeling that once you get used to running without music/podcast/etc, you'll love it even more. It's just you and the world. Took me maybe half a year before I got used to it.
i went the other way :( ...i wish this could be the case with me. when i started running i wouldnt listen to anything, i even did 50km (about 5h run) with no music/podcasts etc and completely alone. Now a few years on i almost always listen to my fave music/podcast. Its like a bad habit i didnt used to have but now i do find it so hard to stop. i dont want to....but i get too bored now 😅
Honestly, as a cross country runner, the best thing I can say for a new runner (or someone in their off season) is to just run. Don’t have a super specific distance or time in mind. (For instance, instead of saying “I want to run 3 miles today” or “I’m going to run a 7:30 minute mile today” say stuff that has room for leeway “I want to run at least 2 miles today.) It might not seem like a big difference but not putting pressure on yourself makes it more enjoyable. Listen to music, and make sure it’s something you really like. Make sure your shoes fit properly and your clothes don’t annoy you because you think that slightly itchy tag is fine right now, but while you’re running, it’ll be all you can think about. Find somewhere you enjoy running, and try not to do the same thing every day. I hate running on treadmills, so I run around parks and things like that, and I find I enjoy it more if it’s someplace ‘new’. (Different route, or just a different place to make it interesting.) If you want some more specific tips I’ll be happy to give some. Happy running!
I would LOVE a book (or podcast) video! I've commented before asking for one, so I'm all for it! Totally loved this video. I never thought of making a bucket list , but I will plan my run at a local park tomorrow as opposed to going to the gym like I planned.
This summer I challenged myself to run a half marathon without any headphones in my ears. At the end i was overatimulated by the people around me and just wanted to leave 😅 but as a chronic "I'm getting dressed. Better put on a video!" i was pretty proud of myself!
Just going for a run without a pace or distance in mind is so good for you. I just started doing this recently, and it's made me start to enjoy running again!
I restarted to run few weeks ago and adopted the “boring podcast before fun music method” and this week, scrolling to all your running videos, you were explaining it ! You are my “boring” podcast when I start to run hahaha, you give me so much focus !
Great tips - one I’ve adopted is rewarding myself when I reach certain milestones! It’s been humbling getting back into running with a lot more weight than when I used to run years ago..but listening to my body and strengthening certain muscles (all of them) instead of running through pain has been life changing. I’m so glad your channel exists!!
I LOVE a good rawdog run. No headphones or anything but me moving. Sometimes I don’t even really have a plan of how far or where I will go. I was told once this is a form of active meditation and I often feel really good when I’m done. Worst case I get a little bored for the last mile but the other 3-6 always are nice.
Especially for winter, I like to get some fun clothes. Like I just bought a reflective jacket thats rainbow colours when you shine a light to it. Maybe it is silly, but it makes me so happy to run around wearing it lol
I love the one on looking for a specific color (like blue). I do a similar thing with different perceptions: notice particular sights, sounds, smells, shapes, movements, direction of sounds, people/trees/cars/buildings (pick any to look for), etc.
In the past I didn't enjoy running, because I always pushed myself too hard and forbid myself to listen to music to concentrate more on my breathing to get a better running result. I didn't enjoy that. Someday I went for a run and thought to myself just go as slow as you can and remind yourself to slow down while running. And with that I enjoyed my music and since then I love running 😊 Love your videos! Thanks for sharing :) ❤
I’ve been running on and off for 10 years or so and it’s been a very recent change to going on a “kind run”. I can stop, slow down, cut it short or just keep going rather than hitting a fixed goal every time regardless of how my mind or body is feeling or how much rest I’ve had. Seems silly but it’s a massive change for me too.
Great video! As a former hater who started running half a year ago I can approve of these tips 😄 I especially recommend podcasts/audio books. It makes it more enjoyable and it's easier to keep a steady pace compared to listening to music which changes much more. (But I also listen to music every now and then to mix it up). I would also say it's important to start slow, especially if you're not super sporty. Start going on walks regularly, then start fast walking (so you sweat), then mix running and walking until you're ready to run for longer at a time. Also important to prevent injuries. And really don't care about your pace. I hated running because I always thought I need to run as fast as I can every time and then would feel completely exhausted and that's of course not enjoyable at all. But going for a run where you give your best according to your individual level is actually quite nice I found. Anyway, again, great video and appreciate all the running content! 😊
Kellie this was amazing! I have not run in a year and now my son and I are training for a 5k turkey trot. I have never been a good runner but I try. One important thing I learned is to slow my pace a lot lol and that has helped me tremendously and I love running so much more ❤️
Cold hands hack. Before you go out, put your gloves in your layers. I unzip my coat and tuck my gloves at the top along my shoulders/top part of my chest and let them get warm while I grab the last bits of my kit or go for my last pee/warm up. Then I put on one glove before going out and only put on my dominant hand glove after I start my run tracker (Strava). That way, both my hands are as warm as they can be at the beginning of my run. I put my gloves on the opposite side of the body as it makes it easier to grab, and I do this while I run if I need to take off my gloves for any reason. Learned habits make things easier. I hope that makes sense.
Loveee your enthusiasm! Wish I had half your energy! Great post. I had a hip replacement 3 1/2 years ago, so I stopped running. I miss it, so planning to get back into it…on a cushiony track in my park. Gotta try to keep it as gentle and low impact as possible, but I’m excited! 🤗
So, today “Ooh, it’s Sunday! New Keltie video day!!” (Australia) Last week, did my first runs ever. And I mean EVER! At 44 years old. This was greatly inspired by you. So, I’ve been looking for videos that support my journey. Again, you came through!! During the video - Is that Notion I see? I’m a Notion girly. As for eating dinner while watching a video and scrolling on your phone, that my dear is ADHD and I do it all the time… in fact, I was doing it while watching your video and eating breakfast… it’s okay… our brains are busy. @@KeltieOConnor I cannot live without Notion. I have two kids with ADHD needs, I have multiple medical needs, I work a very demanding job and I study at university. Notion keeps it all under control! As for the run, thank you so much!! Whoever would have thought I’d start running at age 44?!
Happy you posted Keltie 😊. Would you consider doing a 30 day rebounding challenge? The research on how good rebounding is for you is so fascinating to me but I never see anyone younger than 45 talk about it. Lol.
I treasure my mental freedom when I run. I can think, look at my actual surroundings. It’s a forced break from the screens or podcasts. I don’t get bored. Try it.
I accidentally rawdogged my first ever half marathon because my phone was out of power like 1 km into the race- it endet up being my best run ever (feeling-wise)😅 Since then I regularly do this and it absolutely made running more enjoyable for me!
me in the suburbs with basically nothing to check off for a running bucket list 💔. i make the best of it though. i have found enjoyment recently by just running without my phone & just raw digging it with my thoughts. it’s so nice like i can’t believe i can say i enjoy running now. i love your videos & energy. it’s great, the jokes I LOVE
I was thinking of skipping this video because I'm not allowed to run, but decided a lot would apply to my weighted walks. I just love the book idea, do episodes every quarter or every month about what you are reading! Glad I watched.
I did a long run without music and wow it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! Definitely makes you more present and mindful! I also felt safer bc I was more aware of my surroundings.
7:43 it took me about 1.5 years to transition from heel striking to mid foot striking. I felt like I had to as it was too taxing on my knees. It was hard to change a habit of a lifetime
Books!! Definitely. What sort of advice would you give to someone who can’t hear their music or audio books over traffic noise? Have I got the wrong sort of headphones?? Prefer not to raise the volume too high, need to protect the hearing I have left, lol!
Little tip for the tracking..nfc tags .. just tap them with your phone or smart watch and it notes it for you after a run...easy yet cool to look into afterwards
I am a recovering running hater and started my journey a few weeks ago. Running is actually fun I never thought I would say this someday. Never say never. Doing yoga will improve your ride.
i dont own headphones; in the gym i'm watching people and listening to gym music. i used to go silent on runs but then started listening to playlists with my phone in my bra , it really helps with my pace, breathing, and motivation.
I never listen to anything when I run except my own ragged breath😄 For shoes, if you are fortunate enough to live near a running store staffed by actual runners just go there. They'll size you, assess your gait, discuss the kind of running you do and you will leave happy and not overwhelmed. Otherwise its trial and error.
I love driving down to the beach and running on the boardwalk. I also love my local park, lots of animals and nice trails but sometimes I wish I could run in a city just to make fun pit stops!
If im running on a treadmill (if the weather is particularly bad outside!) then i put a film on (action or musical) if its action then i run as fast as i can for the fight scenes or running scenes etc. if its a musical then i run when they sing. This is the perfect way for me to do a long distance run! I love it 😂😂
54321: five things I can see, four things I can hear, three things I can feel, two things I can smell, one thing I can taste. Totally keeps me present. No work drama and no personal drama ruminations allowed while exercising! 😂😂😂😂😂
I’m 100% team raw-dogging your runs. I even raw dawg my long (half marathon +) runs. It’s genuinely no less enjoyable to me and I feel like it’s the only time I practice getting away from screens haha
I loved this video ad your running cloth always look so cool 😁🤩 I need a west like that. What helps me make runs more fun is sing a song while I'm running because that also helps me slow down so I can actually sing and be in that zone 2 xD
I started my running journey about a month ago and my goal is three times a week, but I don’t try to pressure myself into running three times. It’d start to feel like an obligation otherwise 🤷♀️ This could be a piece of advice for people who are thinking about starting to run, because nobody likes the feeling of another obligation when there’s already so many obligations in life.
For me, reading is a huge part of my mental health/wellness routine, so I would love videos on your reading habits. I often read a physical book while walking on a treadmill or on a stationary bike and use audiobooks to decompress or while lifting. I find that if I'm reading consistently, I am generally all around healthier. But please give all the book recs, not just the self help books all the fitness people like to preach. I want to know which trashy romcoms you're into too please!!!!
I'd love a video about heel vs not heel striking. I'm aware about the debate and consensus in the running community but I've been a heel striker my whole life and when a couple of years ago I tried switching to the fore foot, Despite doing short distance on fore foot and alternating heel/fore foot the whole run, I couldn't walk for 4 days afterwards. All the muscles in the front foot/front ankle were really painful. I've switched back to my heel striking and won't ever attempt changing again.
Winter is coming here in Montana, so for my color runs, I'm going with white. I know what you're thinking. But when I land on my back 3 feet out the front door, most of what I'll be seeing is the grey sky. In terms of fitness gains? I'm setting my expectations low in advance.
Of course I want a book video…girl I love how your mind works, you can assume that if you have a video idea I’ll be interested. But I appreciate that you ask and include your community. ☺️✨
I had my longest run today (9K) and decided to make this run a dog run! I counted all the dogs I’ve seen in the park and it actually really helped to shift focus! By the end of the run, total dog score was 102😍
I'm gonna say in regard to your LMNT ad- my husband is a runner and had chronic pain in his lower leg for a good 6 months and couldn't run. turns out he needed insoles and (one day) special shoes! If you have pain that isn't going away go to your doctor if you can or if you suspect your feet may be a problem- a place like fleetfoot! he's finally back to running
I have a feeling that once you get used to running without music/podcast/etc, you'll love it even more. It's just you and the world. Took me maybe half a year before I got used to it.
I think you are right but as a super beginner I sometimes cannot stand hearing my clumsy footsteps

I love running without headphones. The sound of nature is so soothing
City running with no headphones is rough. Out in nature, sure, great. But I can’t reach the mental zone in the city without audio accompaniment.
I hate people. Music makes me
Forget about them
We need a book episode!!

I find that if I'm reading consistently, I am generally all around healthier. But please give all the book recs, not just the self help books all the fitness people like to preach. I want to know which trashy romcoms you're into too please!!!!
I loooove your running videos!!!
I love you love them!
I would love a video about your books
It's in the work!
Omg yesss more book talk!!!
Yes, please share some 'book content', Keltie! 🥰
Love this !! You've helped me so much ! Ath-let-ah...not leet. You'll get it..
Winter is coming here in Montana, so for my color runs, I'm going with white. I know what you're thinking. But when I land on my back 3 feet out the front door, most of what I'll be seeing is the grey sky. In terms of fitness gains? I'm setting my expectations low in advance.
Yes, a book, episode, and podcasts, please.
Of course I want a book video…girl I love how your mind works, you can assume that if you have a video idea I’ll be interested. But I appreciate that you ask and include your community. ☺️✨
Ooooh a book episode would be amazing!
It's in the works now! 🩵
I needed this video today 💪🏼
Happy to provide it!!!
Keltie!! Do you wear your normal running shoes in the rain or do you get waterproof ones??
book episode would be great!!!
You make me want to take up running. Do you have a video showing how to start running so you don’t immediately burn out or injure yourself?
Happy Thanksgiving long weekend, Keltie!❤
Thank you Ervin! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
Yes to a book video!!
I'm never in my life going to enjoy running but thank u so much for trying
I had my longest run today (9K) and decided to make this run a dog run! I counted all the dogs I’ve seen in the park and it actually really helped to shift focus! By the end of the run, total dog score was 102😍
Completely up for the reading video 😍
I'm gonna say in regard to your LMNT ad- my husband is a runner and had chronic pain in his lower leg for a good 6 months and couldn't run. turns out he needed insoles and (one day) special shoes! If you have pain that isn't going away go to your doctor if you can or if you suspect your feet may be a problem- a place like fleetfoot! he's finally back to running
not me watching this on the treadmill haha loved this!!
Would love a video on what you read! You and savy have a great recommendation on your podcast
not a boring run, nature sounds run! focus on your 5 senses, especially smells & sounds ♥️
Honestly you make it sound so good..I may have to try it ...MAY 🩵
Top tip: get a prance-y dog whose ears bounce to the beat of your music so you can giggle the whole time. Never gets old.
