Nice work Fil. Very cool paint work with the two colours and the white 😎 Like your idea of tackling the body shell first so when the chassis is finished it is time for rocking! I am going to give that a go pal 👍🏻
Thanks pal! Yeah there's no better feeling than being done with a build, then just popping a nice, freshly painted body on, and seeing the entire kit done. 👌
I probably should paint the body first as I always seem to procrastinate painting them or run into rainy, yucky weather and have to wait to paint. I will have to try it on my next build to see if it helps!
I started doing it this way because, like you, I would procrastinate, then the weather would be crappy, then I'd rush the paint and screw it up. Now, I start the paint first, take my time, and I'm always a lot happier with the end result. 👊
Great video.. thanks. 2 questions for you. Do you wash the shells before or after you cut them out. 2nd question. What are you using to mount your cars for your display.
Always, Always, ALWAYS wash the shell before cutting. After cutting they're usually good to go, but occasionally I'll wipe the inside with rubbing alcohol to remove finger prints. I mount my cars with "closet organizers" I found at Home Depot. :)
I was thinking about using Lexan paint on my tire letters for my mustang rather than using Paint Pens. The paint from Paint Pens doesn't seem to last. It cracks and flakes off even during normal driving. The letters come in white, and I figure I can spray some of them, then glue them to the tires after. With your opinion: do you think the Lexan paint would do better?
That's a good question. The additives in the lexan paint would lend themselves to better adhesion than the paint pens, so in theory, it should work well. Keep me posted on how it goes.
Hi Fil, Thanks for the helpful video! I’m getting back into the hobby and picked up a Squash Van. Question: the paint on your Squash Van turned out really nice! Did you use the same techniques that you showed in this video - ie same masking tapes and stuff? Thanks from a new subscriber!
New Subscriber, right on! Thanks for coming on board, Simon. For the Von Squash, I used all the same tips and tricks that you see in this video. The key for a really crisp line between the two colors is to use the blue fine-line tape, and make sure it's seated really well before you start spraying. A hair dryer works perfectly to help the adhesion. When you're happy with that, the less expensive, wider tape can be used to mask of a large area, like the white part of the SV.
