After 14 years I'm still beyond grateful for and amazed by what I've learned from content creators. "Simple" things like this are not simple until people like yourself help us make it simple. The time I spent watching this probably saved an hour, and possibly kept me from making a mess of my new body. Cheers
A few things about protection: paint can be bad for skin, so wear gloves when painting. Also, paint above surfaces you don't want to ruin or protect them. And I hate to see poked bodies, so I prefer to use magnets instead. Great video!
I remember my first polycarbonate body shell, I didn’t realise there was a protective film on the outside so I applied the decals then noticed what I’d done, I peeled off the film and all the decals came off with it!!! 🤣🤣🤣
OMG it all makes sense now!!!!My Nissan skyline had Japanese instructions 🤣I painted the exterior with hardware spray paint...This video saved me for the future Thank you sir 👌😉
Great simple video for the beginner. Would have painted the outside for sure without knowing inside only. Have just ordered a few parts from you guys for my first drift project.
This is a good general video of how to paint your rc body. Doesn’t have to be a drifter body but all sorts of other lexan bodies. I think I’m ready to paint my first crawler body now
Had some bleeding but that’s because I didn’t press hard enough on the masking tape but aside from that I’m impressed. 3 coats wasn’t enough. 6 layers or coats was just right.
These guys don’t know what they’re talking about. You paint the outside for most paint jobs but people will “back” their chosen color with a different coat on the inside. It makes the coat on the outside “pop” and adds a lot of depth to the color. It has nothing to do with protecting the paint job!
I used to watch Kevin Talbot a lot so I knew a couple things but this video cleared up the murky water, I also bought a couple parts from Hobbies Direct and it's really good quality, thanks for everything love the work.
Here's a trick that has worked for me for years. Rather than purchase a bunch of expensive dinky spray cans of Tamiya or Pactra polycarbonate paint that doesn't coat properly. Simply purchase one can of clear coat and give the inside of the body a coating of that. That will create a perfectly good base for other paints to adhere too. I myself recommend either Krylon 2X or Krylon Fussion paints... I have never had a problem with the Krylon paint chipping or peeling using this method.. Once again you need to coat it with polycarbonate clear coat first as a base
@@ado3769 If your talking about using actual automotive paint like on a real car? I couldn't say for sure but I wouldn't use it. That stuff is pretty thick for RC bodies. But the real person who would know about it's flexibility should be the guy painting your daily driver. And if he does fine detail air brush work for designs or pinstriping, That paint is usually thinner and might be ok if done in light coats.. But once again he would know more about the properties of that paint than I would... All that said, I have a thing that works for me, But I'll never claim to be an expert
@sleepy jaguar All I can say is I've never had a problem with it, But then I only apply it in no more than two thin coats.. And that's only after applying the clear polycarbonate as a base for the Krylon to adhere to.. And I drive a 2wd Slash basher if ya get the idea, And not once in several years of doing this have I had any chipping like one might get if they used for example regular model paint which is definitely way to thick
You gotta love the psychology behind why us boys play with these things. Drifting and hip hop music might not be your thing but country rock and buggy bashing in the bush might be 🤣
Great. Just wanted to add a tip. May avoid 10-15 min waiting between coats. I use my wife's hairdryer to make the paint dry quicker blowing about 20 seconds.
I do the same. You can get 3 light coats done in about 15 minutes. When drying with a hair dryer you can actually see the paint shine go flat letting you know it's dry. Allow 2-3 minutes for the body to cool before applying the next coat.
I’m about to paint my first RC body, for my new to me Scx crawler, Jeep Wrangler body. Can’t wait to get some paints and give it a go. Thanks for the very helpful video. 😃
you would’ve saved so much time masking the hood and painting it black after the orange if you wanted a black backing for the last layers, thanks for the help!
very nice video got a new body coming soon and ive never painted one, watching your video has give me confidense to do so :) great stuff guys liked and subbed
I just bought a Nissan Z 2023 body for my 1/8 Vendetta and some new body posts from you guys. Should be here early next week!! - * deep breaths, here goes nothin* wish me luck.
I just bought a Mitsubishi Starion body and gonna do red with black hood scoop and accents. Your video helped tremendously for me to roll the dice and start.
Omg i’ve been waiting for a video like this so I can learn how to paint my body thanks u so much every video I’ve seen does not show you step-by-step how to paint a body
As others have said, this is incredibly useful. I'm about to paint my first clear shell, and would absolutely have used the wrong paint if not for this advice. A couple of Qs though - if you don't get window mask stickers with your shell, any tips on masking from scratch? Do I just need to cut masking tape to fit? Also did you paint the black window surrounds with a brush at the end? Cheers.
Hi Adam, thanks for your positive feedback and comment. Yes, If your clear body doesn't come with factory window masks, you can use masking tape and trim the edges to fit the window lines. Just be careful not to layer up to many strips of masking tape as the tape can lift/raise leading to paint to bleed. Nah, I didn't brush on the window surrounds, this particular HPI body came with window stickers. If your body doesn't come with window stickers like this one, you can brush them on or use a black permanent marker.
Michael Brind I used the tamiya yellow tape and the adhesive reacted with the acrylic paint and messed up my project , did some research and found it to be a common problem
I have a question. I have a tamiya body that comes with side mirrors (like all of them). If I were to paint the body blue then back it with black, how would I make that same dark blue on the mirrors? Note: I can't go back I already made the holes for them.
That was actually awesome and so refreshing to hear an Aussie accent. I missed the bit on how you did the black window trim. Also, I want do the exact same paint job just with the main body Tamiya Dark Metallic Blue. Would I need to back it with black or would that turn out crazy dark? Thanks guys, good job.
If you have a steady hand you can score the cut lines with an xacto knife then bend and break the lexan along the lines and no sanding is really needed.
Hi, I'm restoring an old rc car... Any tips on repainting an old rc car body (obviously by applying paint to the exterior)? Any special kind of base coat/clear coat and paint formulation that would provide a hard, durable finish that may not scratch or scuff too easily? Thanks for any info...
Soild Video , I did my paint job on the outside because i do my own personal details but i coat it with a few layers of top coat but i am going to do the next one like you did i think its better all around. What drift spec chassis are you using in this video?
Nice vid! I have a question im using fluo yellow and backing it with a good coat of white butt i really want to have it black for finish cause i bash in the woods and dirt is less shown on a black finish does that affect the brightnes to be less or does it not matter cause i already have used the white backing?
thank you for the vid, i was wondering how to do the "carbon fiber" body panels. i will likely test out some color backings for a certain reddish pink hue on the fender cutouts.
Can you paint over the stock rc body? Like the name and designs it comes with out the box. Could I just throw some paint over it or would it be a different process???

Thanks. If I didn’t watch this is would just be painting my body from the exterior 😂
Bro same 😅
Lol i did
GA_Erik 🤦🏽♂️
I was about to do the same
That’s what I would have done too! Lol

Great advice!
Great video, gave a first time RC builder, like myself a lot of helpful tips.
I remember my first polycarbonate body shell, I didn’t realise there was a protective film on the outside so I applied the decals then noticed what I’d done, I peeled off the film and all the decals came off with it!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Hahahah ono thats mustve been a pain.
Maybe you could've used an a razor blade and saved your decals but darn that sucks
Mr Doofa rip bro
Same lol i apply the paint on the outer part of the body then i peal the protective layer
Shit...
Just finished my first kit and it came with a clear body. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
wow, great job with the spray painting, i'm surprised you got no paint on the table you were working on!

Thanks for your comment. Happy new year to you too!
@@HobbiesDirect Hey Just wanted to ask what is the reason for painting the inside?
@@crocodylinae4161 I'm pretty sure it's because if you crash the car and it's painted on the outside the paint job will scratch off
painting the inside of the body will prevent it from damage the paint when you crash it

One of the best instructional vids on painting I've watched.👍👍🔥. Subbed.
Thanks heaps for your support, we're looking forward to doing more helpful videos soon 😃
I cant even say how much you helped me with making my first body with this tutorial. Much love :)
Glad to have helped!
Really like your instructional videos. I have seen 2 now and both have answered questions I wasn't getting from other videos. Thanks a ton.
Thank you! I was looking for advice on cleaning the body so the paint would stick. Good old dawn and water! 🙏👍💯
That was amazing work..i now feel confident to get spraying my own shells..

Excellent video mate
I should of watched this 2 days ago 😂😂 my Subaru ended up with some dark blue spots but on the plus side it’s an excuse to buy a new RC

Many thanks...just bought a Tamiya NSU for my first r/c...can't wait.
Very helpful video for a first timer, thanks!
Is one can of tamiya spray paint enough to paint one Tamiya 1/10th RC?
Great video. If we can’t get the paint that you used is regular spray paint from a hardware store ok?
You don't rough up / scourer the inside before you paint?
wait... so, on RC you paint the inside, not the outside? JW, i got my first kit and just built the chassis. Going to paint the body soon.
One of the better videos
Super good video
very helpful video - thanks very much for posting
after removing the tape you used for a mask. Do you need to wash w soap again?
Depends on the tape, some masking tapes can leave some of the adhesive on the body which I clean off with Tamiya body cleaner #87118
I don't think I'd paint it, or at least not all of it. I actually like seeing the innards.

Why did you not tape up the black before you painted the orange?

what tape do you use?
Does painters tape work best?

So do you need to key up the body?
do u have to use tamiya pc paint or can u use different paints as well?
2:01 bro is that a hand operated taper bit?!! 🤯
Can we put anything to protect the paint from little stones or gravel?
You can do additional layers of paint, or something like this: hobbiesdirect.com.au/p/29247/deluxe-materials-body-armour-60g-ad79

thanks for this video
