After 14 years I'm still beyond grateful for and amazed by what I've learned from content creators. "Simple" things like this are not simple until people like yourself help us make it simple. The time I spent watching this probably saved an hour, and possibly kept me from making a mess of my new body. Cheers
A few things about protection: paint can be bad for skin, so wear gloves when painting. Also, paint above surfaces you don't want to ruin or protect them. And I hate to see poked bodies, so I prefer to use magnets instead. Great video!
I remember my first polycarbonate body shell, I didn’t realise there was a protective film on the outside so I applied the decals then noticed what I’d done, I peeled off the film and all the decals came off with it!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Here's a trick that has worked for me for years. Rather than purchase a bunch of expensive dinky spray cans of Tamiya or Pactra polycarbonate paint that doesn't coat properly. Simply purchase one can of clear coat and give the inside of the body a coating of that. That will create a perfectly good base for other paints to adhere too. I myself recommend either Krylon 2X or Krylon Fussion paints... I have never had a problem with the Krylon paint chipping or peeling using this method.. Once again you need to coat it with polycarbonate clear coat first as a base
@@ado3769 If your talking about using actual automotive paint like on a real car? I couldn't say for sure but I wouldn't use it. That stuff is pretty thick for RC bodies. But the real person who would know about it's flexibility should be the guy painting your daily driver. And if he does fine detail air brush work for designs or pinstriping, That paint is usually thinner and might be ok if done in light coats.. But once again he would know more about the properties of that paint than I would... All that said, I have a thing that works for me, But I'll never claim to be an expert
@sleepy jaguar All I can say is I've never had a problem with it, But then I only apply it in no more than two thin coats.. And that's only after applying the clear polycarbonate as a base for the Krylon to adhere to.. And I drive a 2wd Slash basher if ya get the idea, And not once in several years of doing this have I had any chipping like one might get if they used for example regular model paint which is definitely way to thick
These guys don’t know what they’re talking about. You paint the outside for most paint jobs but people will “back” their chosen color with a different coat on the inside. It makes the coat on the outside “pop” and adds a lot of depth to the color. It has nothing to do with protecting the paint job!
Great simple video for the beginner. Would have painted the outside for sure without knowing inside only. Have just ordered a few parts from you guys for my first drift project.
You gotta love the psychology behind why us boys play with these things. Drifting and hip hop music might not be your thing but country rock and buggy bashing in the bush might be 🤣
This is a good general video of how to paint your rc body. Doesn’t have to be a drifter body but all sorts of other lexan bodies. I think I’m ready to paint my first crawler body now
Had some bleeding but that’s because I didn’t press hard enough on the masking tape but aside from that I’m impressed. 3 coats wasn’t enough. 6 layers or coats was just right.
OMG it all makes sense now!!!!My Nissan skyline had Japanese instructions 🤣I painted the exterior with hardware spray paint...This video saved me for the future Thank you sir 👌😉
Great. Just wanted to add a tip. May avoid 10-15 min waiting between coats. I use my wife's hairdryer to make the paint dry quicker blowing about 20 seconds.
I do the same. You can get 3 light coats done in about 15 minutes. When drying with a hair dryer you can actually see the paint shine go flat letting you know it's dry. Allow 2-3 minutes for the body to cool before applying the next coat.
I used to watch Kevin Talbot a lot so I knew a couple things but this video cleared up the murky water, I also bought a couple parts from Hobbies Direct and it's really good quality, thanks for everything love the work.
very nice video got a new body coming soon and ive never painted one, watching your video has give me confidense to do so :) great stuff guys liked and subbed
you would’ve saved so much time masking the hood and painting it black after the orange if you wanted a black backing for the last layers, thanks for the help!
I’m about to paint my first RC body, for my new to me Scx crawler, Jeep Wrangler body. Can’t wait to get some paints and give it a go. Thanks for the very helpful video. 😃
I just bought a Mitsubishi Starion body and gonna do red with black hood scoop and accents. Your video helped tremendously for me to roll the dice and start.
Michael Brind I used the tamiya yellow tape and the adhesive reacted with the acrylic paint and messed up my project , did some research and found it to be a common problem
If you have a steady hand you can score the cut lines with an xacto knife then bend and break the lexan along the lines and no sanding is really needed.
Omg i’ve been waiting for a video like this so I can learn how to paint my body thanks u so much every video I’ve seen does not show you step-by-step how to paint a body
Clear body. A bucket Oil based spray cans(chosen colour) White or grey primer spray(plastic) Fill the bucket with water Use your oil coloured spray paint spray the surface of your your water Make sure to wear gloves If so tape the windows or parts you dont want to get affected. Put the body in the water at a 45° angle. There you go hydro dipped your shell easy peasy.
Cut your body posts down.u did all that great work only for it to be overshadowed by those ugly posts. I dremel the tops off...then sand for a nice surface.
I have a question. I have a tamiya body that comes with side mirrors (like all of them). If I were to paint the body blue then back it with black, how would I make that same dark blue on the mirrors? Note: I can't go back I already made the holes for them.
I have a tamiya subaru impreza monte carlo 99 and i have done 5 coats in tamiya ps16 metallic blue but when i hold it up to a light i can still see trough it. I dont know whether to back it with silver or just leave it
That was actually awesome and so refreshing to hear an Aussie accent. I missed the bit on how you did the black window trim. Also, I want do the exact same paint job just with the main body Tamiya Dark Metallic Blue. Would I need to back it with black or would that turn out crazy dark? Thanks guys, good job.

That's what its for! 🙂 Glad to have helped.
Thanks. If I didn’t watch this is would just be painting my body from the exterior 😂
Bro same 😅
Lol i did
GA_Erik 🤦🏽♂️
I was about to do the same
That’s what I would have done too! Lol

Great video!
Great advice!

Hahahah ono thats mustve been a pain.
Maybe you could've used an a razor blade and saved your decals but darn that sucks
Mr Doofa rip bro
Same lol i apply the paint on the outer part of the body then i peal the protective layer
Shit...
Great video, gave a first time RC builder, like myself a lot of helpful tips.
Just finished my first kit and it came with a clear body. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
wow, great job with the spray painting, i'm surprised you got no paint on the table you were working on!

Spindrift2018 I plan on having my painter use the same paint he’s doing on my daily driver should I still do this method

Body paint work has been very helpful.
Happy New Year.
Thanks for your comment. Happy new year to you too!
@@HobbiesDirect Hey Just wanted to ask what is the reason for painting the inside?
@@crocodylinae4161 I'm pretty sure it's because if you crash the car and it's painted on the outside the paint job will scratch off
painting the inside of the body will prevent it from damage the paint when you crash it

One of the best instructional vids on painting I've watched.👍👍🔥. Subbed.
Thanks heaps for your support, we're looking forward to doing more helpful videos soon 😃

Must be proud after painting your own car
This is a good general video of how to paint your rc body. Doesn’t have to be a drifter body but all sorts of other lexan bodies. I think I’m ready to paint my first crawler body now
How did it go?
Had some bleeding but that’s because I didn’t press hard enough on the masking tape but aside from that I’m impressed. 3 coats wasn’t enough. 6 layers or coats was just right.

I cant even say how much you helped me with making my first body with this tutorial. Much love :)
Glad to have helped!

No worries! Hope all the videos help :-)
Thank you! I was looking for advice on cleaning the body so the paint would stick. Good old dawn and water! 🙏👍💯
you would’ve saved so much time masking the hood and painting it black after the orange if you wanted a black backing for the last layers, thanks for the help!

Great work there Hamish love the shell.
I thought painting a body was so hard but it looks easy as long as you take your time
Bro the sticker masking is the worst part especially for a hatchback like my eg6
I can't wait to try this out in the future when I get a tamiya rc car
Hey Hobbies, i’ve just brought the Traxxas TRX-4 Sport body, and this was very helpful! Thank you very much! 😊
Excellent video mate
I just bought a Mitsubishi Starion body and gonna do red with black hood scoop and accents. Your video helped tremendously for me to roll the dice and start.
Awesome! That's what we like to hear!
Is it just me or can anybody else like smell the orange paint it’s like mr sketch markers holy
Nice job.. Very informative.. Thanks..
Very nice result!🤩
Thanks! It's all in the prep 🙂
@@HobbiesDirect That shows! Thank for making this video, really helpful👍
I like to cut LAST, this way I can use the non usable sections to clamp or hang the body for painting or drying.
You are the spraycan master! 😁
thanks for this video
great job so shiny
Thanks! Now I know what this "backing up" really means :D
Michael Brind
I used the tamiya yellow tape and the adhesive reacted with the acrylic paint and messed up my project , did some research and found it to be a common problem
That’s why you use polycarbonate paint
If you have a steady hand you can score the cut lines with an xacto knife then bend and break the lexan along the lines and no sanding is really needed.
Im about to overhaul my old rc drift car and buying a new shell, if i didn't watch this I would be painting the outside 😂
You watched it just in time!
You nailed this thanks very much
Thanks for watching!
This was very helpful. Thanks for the thoroughly detailed information.

Thanks bro u made it hack of easy know I'll paint my own Betty body instead of paying someone, thanks 💯🔥🔥🔥💪🏾🏁
Clear body.
A bucket
Oil based spray cans(chosen colour)
White or grey primer spray(plastic)
Fill the bucket with water
Use your oil coloured spray paint spray the surface of your your water
Make sure to wear gloves
If so tape the windows or parts you dont want to get affected.

Sounds cool, you gotta make a video of it :)
I will be but on a different account it will be a team c clear shell 1/5 so should work great
Andrea Potts can’t wait to see! All the best!
Great I have a shell coming soon, but I will where gloves aswell, thanks
Guys you can also use masking tape if you don’t have window masks
Proline always has that tho
This was a very educational and helpful video, thanks!
Excellent vid mate and thoroughly informative. Much appreciated, thank you.
Kool beans. Very informative
Super good video
very helpful video - thanks very much for posting
I don't think I'd paint it, or at least not all of it. I actually like seeing the innards.
Very good video. Greetings from Indianapolis IN.
Many thanks...just bought a Tamiya NSU for my first r/c...can't wait.
One of the better videos
Only thing id change is id use magnetic hidden mounts instead of putting holes in the body to mount.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks man! Exactly what I needed!
This dude absolutely painted his entire thumb black painting the hood. 😭😂
Very helpful video for a first timer, thanks!
2:01 bro is that a hand operated taper bit?!! 🤯
Thanks This video helped a lot
Very helpful. Thanks
Hey why don't you use a hairdryer to dry it after washing it?
Sweet paintjob it would look better if you cut the body holder mounts down
Thank you.
Great video, loads of useful & helpful info'....cheers!
Awesome info, thank you!
Well this will be very useful next time I do a body project... Cos stupid me did it on the outside 😂
Good job.👍💯
Cut your body posts down.u did all that great work only for it to be overshadowed by those ugly posts. I dremel the tops off...then sand for a nice surface.
sick... i cam here because i have a lancer that need to be red, with a white bonnet!!!
Nice! Hope it turns out great!
Awesome job!
why do people not cut the body posts to lenght on these things i wonder?
Same here
I have a question. I have a tamiya body that comes with side mirrors (like all of them). If I were to paint the body blue then back it with black, how would I make that same dark blue on the mirrors? Note: I can't go back I already made the holes for them.
Awesome !!
Good video. Nice and clear and helpful. Good job.
Looks awesome that track looks even better is there a video on how to build a track
Good video 👍
Is one can of tamiya spray paint enough to paint one Tamiya 1/10th RC?
You don't rough up / scourer the inside before you paint?
Thanks man! I got a 91 forerunner I’m going to paint!
Very informative, thank you!
great video thanks
You fully forgot the black trunk lid also... looks great though
.
Thank u
I can barely cut the wheel wells
This is a good tutorial
Thank you bud
If I decide to do this, I think the only car I would do is an R34 Skyline like Brian’s in 2F2F and in F4
I have a tamiya subaru impreza monte carlo 99 and i have done 5 coats in tamiya ps16 metallic blue but when i hold it up to a light i can still see trough it. I dont know whether to back it with silver or just leave it

Try it backed with black white and grey on cutout wheel arches and see how it looks
Amazing!
