    I'm in my mid 20s, currently a PCT and an undergrad junior following the premed track for the PA program. I was bit discouraged starting out a PCT going full throttle to the PA program but watching this video has gain me inspiration going forward. This was very insightful and useful knowledge tips, so thank you for this

    First off, what an awesome and informative video! I just wanted to let any high school seniors know that I am currently going through the interview process for PA school and have gone through things such as research, shadowing, PCE, and the GRE. I am part of an organization called MED-ED and we are a group of students from different medical backgrounds that come and speak to high school students from medically underserved areas about different careers in healthcare. I am obviously the PA student representative of the group but we have students that represent the M.D, D.O, P.A, OTD, R.N, and N.P professions. We are based in Pittsburgh and would love to come and speak to schools about medical-related careers but we also do Zoom meetings at any school in the country! We talk about the differences between professions such as responsibilities, education requirements, and compensation. On top of all of that, we walk you through step by step on the process to becoming a P.A or any other medical professional! If any of you are interested you can follow us on Instagram @ _med_ed and message us! we would love to hear from all our future healthcare professionals! Thanks for reading!

    Best Major For Anyone trying to get into Medicine in My Opinion is nursing. You get majority of the PA pre reqs (besides Chem 2, Orgo and Gen Bio), and YOU WILL HAVE A JOB AFTER GRADUATION (one of the highest paying jobs for a bachelors degree too). You also can go NP, CRNA, PA, MD, DO, Perfusionist, Pharmacist and will have more experience and knowledge than most of your counterparts applying to schools. No other Bachelors degree prepares you more than nursing both clinically and in didactics. If i could do it again I would had majored in Nursing as an incoming freshman instead of doing an accelerated program post grad, it might had mad more sense to do PA in my situation. But if you are HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PICK NURSING or even an associate degree in Respiratory Therapy (RT's is great experience especially for Perfusionist school).

    • @saragreen1143
      @saragreen1143 Год назад +1

      I actually wouldn’t recommend this. The prereqs don’t match up very well with a nursing degree, and people are going to ask you in interviews, “why did you become a nurse instead of PA/MD/DO?” Nursing school is also very challenging and harder to keep a good GPA with.

    • @dgray3412
      @dgray3412 Год назад +1

      @@saragreen1143 I don’t think you’re aware of nursing pre reqs then or you didn’t look at the pre reqs I stated you will have to take if you went to nursing school. Most nursing students will only be missing Chem 2 , organic chemistry, Gen bio , and Genetics. You can easily take one or two of those courses during the summer of the 4 years of nursing undergrad and a few while you’re working as a RN. And do you honestly think schools will question the RN to PA/DO/MD as opposed to praising the decision. A nurse has been through the trenches they know exactly what they’re getting themselves into to take this next step. A kid majoring in bio who had high grades and was a medical scribe may do very well in PA school DO, and MD school but they lack that real healthcare experience. Plus what if you don’t get in to school? What are you going to do? Nursing/RT/ radiology tech/ scrub tech all give you decent paying job options while you wait and the opportunity to have way better letters of recommendations and networks because you’re working with providers closely day after day.

    Im 37, post grad with a Doctorate from law school, however... I worked in the medical field for almost 10 years from 2001 to 2010 I assisted with patients hands on, from icing them after a procedure, to wrapping their wounds etc. The same Doctor I worked with is writing me a recommendation for PA school (but I am NO WHERE near being ready to apply I still have about a year of pre-reqs) can my former boss/ doctor that I worked for attest to my hours OR must it be on my record. I have a record of employment of course but there's no "log" of my hands on experience. How do you prove it? I have a long way to go but hey... it's never too late. Especially because I am going to go into studying longevity :) OHH I failed to mention by actual job was NOT a medical assistant, I was the manager HOWEVER, I was trained under the doctor and she trusted me so it was not what I was paid to do, it was extra.

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  4 года назад +2

      So, it sounds like you were doing partial patient care experience and partial healthcare experience. Patient care experience is better than healthcare experience. I guess in your situation, you could try and guesstimate what percentage of your time was spent doing either. The application will simply ask you the number of hours you worked and the number of weeks worked and multiply these two numbers to give you your total hours. It’s a pretty informal process, but you’re also asked to list your supervisor or doctor as a contact in case anyone would want to look into your hours. I honestly don’t know how often this even happens. You’re not required to upload any documentation of work logs.

    Quick Question: I know that most schools require 1000+ hours of hands-on experience to get into a PA, how did you manage to get those hours while in school since most of the jobs require at least a certificate which takes 6 months to a year to obtain a certificate for the job to start working.

    Hey Braedon, thank you for the helpful video! What would you say to someone interested in PA school that has PreReqs that are more than 10 years old? Many programs have this requirement. Going to check on tuition reimbursement with my employer. Classes are pricey and I don't have much savings. What are your thoughts? I may just have to bite the bullet, save up some money, and retake the classes. It just seems like such a daunting task at the moment...

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +2

      Yeah, most if not all the programs I applied to required your prereqs to be within 10 years. You could try to take some at a community college to save money? You could potentially take all of them through a community college. I’d talk to a few programs you’re interested in first and see what they think about that decision. Some programs aren’t crazy about seeing a lot of prereqs from CCs

    I work as a Medical Assistant in Dermatology, where I work under MD's and PA's. When you mentioned getting shadowing experience, would my current job qualify me as having experience "shadowing"? (considering I work directly for a PA as his/her assistant,-rooming/charting, sending rx's, doing tasks, etc) Or would I need to obtain this elsewhere?
    Also, i'm in the process of starting pre-req courses for PA school, although I fear if I get these done at a local community college it would make me "unfavorable" on my application, potentially having my application denied, due to them not being from a university?
    Thank you!!!!! Your videos are SO helpful!

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +1

      Technically, no as that’s strictly work experience but DM me on IG and I can go into more detail. It’s ok to take courses at a CC. I think to be safe, try to avoid taking all of those classes at a CC, because unfortunately, some programs don’t like this idea. It’s dumb, I know.

    Hello! I’m in a bit of a unique situation as I’m a working ultrasound tech but with an Associate’s degree (Diagnostic Medical Sonography). I’m planning on getting my BS online and this worries me because it may not look good for me applying to a PA program. Currently looking at major requirements that I haven’t taken yet and planning on doing them all at a community college. Any advice on this? Also have you met anyone that has ultrasound/radiology as their PCE? Thank you very much!!

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! It kind of depends how much PCE you have. If you have a ton, it won’t look so bad that your BS is online. I’m not positive how schools will view this. Some programs will frown upon you doing ALL of your prereqs at a CC. For whatever reason, they see it as the “easier”. I know people that have used US for PCE! That’s great experience! My best advice is to find a few PA programs you’d be interested in, and present these questions to them. That’s going to give you the best answerb

    Pretty much every school I look at has a required GPA for the prereqs. I decided PA after I took those courses, and at the time I didn't take them very seriously. My overall GPA is good, but I have two C's in prereqs that need to be B's. Should I still apply? Im totally fine taking another semester of undergrad to retake those courses, but is there a chance I could get in to some schools even though they say B's are required?

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад

      It depends on the program. Some will have a minimum GPA requirement. Others will require Bs or better in any prerequisite courses. There’s still a chance you could get accepted! Just be aware of the fine print when it comes to programs you’re interested in!

Talk to your academic advisor and see if it delays your graduation at all. It might mean that you take summer classes for one or two summers, but those aren’t a big deal! I took summer classes and I honestly enjoyed them more than my regular classes.

I worked as a PT tech for 18 months in undergrad and all those hours are completely transferable to PA school. My advice is to find a PT tech job and just see how you like that, that is exactly how I found out that I didn't want to do PT school.

      That's a great question. I'm not entirely positive, but I would say if your prereqs are all science courses, you can safely assume they'd be pretty similar. Many schools require stats and other random classes, though, making the two GPAs different. For the most part, I'd say they're similar.

    Question : when do you apply for PA school if you’re ideally looking to start the next cycle after you graduate college? Spring of junior year or senior year? I’m confused:)

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +4

      Junior year! You'll apply and interview throughout your senior year. UNLESS you apply to a school that starts in January of the following year. You'd obviously still be in school until May. Let me give you dates to make it more clear.
      Say you graduate May 2020. You'll apply to PA school this cycle (2019-2020). You'll interview at programs in the fall of 2019/spring of 2020 and most will begin in August 2020 (some May/June). The exception to this is if a program begins in January. You would have to apply during the 2020-2021 cycle to start in this program. If you applied in 2019, you'd still be in undergrad when the program started. Obviously that doesn't work haha. Just read that a few times until it makes sense.
      Hope this helps!

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +1

      There are lists out there ranking programs, but I would take these with a grain of salt in terms of what distinguishes one program from another. Obviously, the program's at the top of these lists are good, but I'm not sure how they rank them in terms of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Look at the program's PANCE pass rates over the last few years. Also, see if the program has been around for awhile or is "established". If so, they likely have relationships with my hospitals/clinics which really helps for mapping out rotations. You can also check and see what the incoming GPA is of the previous classes. Generally, the more competitive programs will have incoming classes with higher GPAs/more PCE. Also, reach out to previous students of the program if you can! Use LinkedIn and attempt to reach out. See if the person will give you an honest opinion of that program!

    • @DaywithaPA
      @DaywithaPA  5 лет назад +10

      I never thought I would get into PA school. I’m honestly more pessimistic than optimistic! I compared myself to others constantly, especially the online forums. I’d read others stats and never thought I had a chance when people would post about 5k hours of patient care experience with a 4.0 GPA. Know that so many students get accepted with 3.5s and only 1k hours of experience. It’s a very holistic process and adcoms will consider every aspect of your application. If you can get really good letters of rec and write a solid personal statement, it will go a long way. In the meantime, take things day by day and don’t worry about what you can’t control! Debt can be scary but there are many programs that are “affordable” relatively speaking. For example, if you’re an in-state student at a public school like UK, you pay about 40-50k in tuition. I think the national average now for PA school is around 80k, so that’s pretty good! There are a few scholarships out there, but don’t expect them to cover your entire tuition. One to consider that can have a huge impact is the NHSC tuition reimbursement! I’d make sure it’s right for you though (read the fine print).
      At the end of the day, do your best and work hard in school. Don’t beat yourself up! I love the quote by Mark Twain, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” 👍

      If you are becoming an RN, you are better off going the Nurse Practitioner route. Much more autonomy than a PA. Many states NPs can work autonomously without a physician, and you can open your own clinic. PAs must always work for a physician in a supervised role. No disrespect to PAs.

    • @bellefeu4933

      @@epiduralman Yes an no. While NP's do have more autonomy, there are much fewer positions for NP's in the OR besides CRNA as opposed to surg PA. PA follows the medical plan of care vs. the nursing plan of care; both are similar and different. It is generally easier to make more money as a PA vs NP, assuming you are willing to work 60+hrs/wk - I've seen PA's make 250k/yr., the highest NP I've seen was CRNA also at ~250k. Depends on the program but for the most part you’ll find that gen chem, ochem, A&P, and biology are all required at the least. Many will also req genetics, microbiology, biochem, etc.

      Depends on the program, but I’d say around 3.6-3.7
