In the 80s, Neil gave away several of his drumsets in a solo contest by Modern Drummer. The winner of the Slingerland kit never played it and sold it last year on Ebay for $26K. The owner made some repairs and displayed it at PASIC09 in Indianapolis. For a small fee, going to charity, you could play the kit. I had to work in Indiana at the time so I stopped by and spent quite a bit of time playing on Neil's kit for the first 4 Rush albums. I got to keep the sticks as well. I had a fabulous time!
I used to play this back when it first came out...and this MoFo is right on the money..his timing is flawless..the first 32 seconds are out of this world..and when he starts running the ride at 45 seconds it great!!! Neil will work you hard...
whoever is outside of that big window is either loving every second of it or runnin for cover!!!! Here's to good neighbours! btw...great playin keep it up! I can't get enough of the oddtime start of this song!
This just goes to show how far ahead Neil Peart was of his time, even back in '75 when Fly By Night came out. Your drumming just makes me appreciate him more, but I'm already of fan of both of you. Keep it up!!
why is it that I only really appreciate the complexity of Neil's drumming after watching somone else try to duplicate it? He really makes it sound so seemless and effortless. Thank you Astrotama you are amazing!!
Because his ( Neil's) chit is a friggin' work out to try and play ... I'm a seasoned/accomplished metal player of 40 years, and Neil's stuff still bends, twists, and pushes my limits on certain passages.,..HempopotamusLoudspeakers.com
Great job man,... I'm a 42 Yr. old drummer who's been playing RUSH tunes since I was 14, when I first started watching this, I noted right off, that you had excellent control, & timing, and that made me want to watch the fill, & solo at 3:17 & 4:08-4:13 respectively,... I wasn't dissappointed. Excellent WORK, my friend. ~S.
Yessir, that was awesome. You and your skill are a great tribute to Neil and to drumming as a whole. Rock on and please post as much as you freaking can!
Great job, I've seen alot of drummers here playing RUSH songs, but they never seem to be able to duplicate Neil's feel. You've come as close as Ive seen at being able to do that.
Astro is correct. The basis of what became 'Anthem' was being worked out by Lee and Lifeson before Neil joined, and one of the signs that he was going to work out with the band was the fact that 'Anthem' started really coming to life during the audition. Alex recalls how he was kind of taken aback by him: "He played the crap out of those drums!"
And to think Neil was 23 years old when he wrote that drum part. Well played Astrotama. That is one busy song and that ride cymbal is nasty stuff..LOL. I agree that was one of the songs played during Neil's audition for the band.
I am also a drummer (so old I have the original albums, I got them new :).) Your skill is astonishing. What I enjoyed most is that like myself you are a perfectionist who has to play the song exactly the way you hear it.Congradulations, you are in a very elite class of drummers. Myself no longer included.Keep pushing, thats what I did,you definitley have the talent.Might I suggest some ELP, try Karn Evil 9, First Impression.I burned my arms out joyfully to that song. Again, congrats,& good luck.
Thank you so much for sharing your skill...maybe now after Neil is gone, if Rush were to ever go back on the road, I'd like to think you'd be in the conversation given your skill-set, passion and time-frame on this channel. I realize none of us can ever replace Neil, but having someone as skilled as you with the love for Rush should be given an opportunity.
I always wondered how Neil could play entire concerts with drumming like this, but the more I see you do it, the more it looks so damn fun to do. I guess it's that mix of the progressive rock and a gigantic drum set
i wish i could play my kit HALF AS GOOD AS YOU BRO!!!! you are shap!!!! you make it look too ezzy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy New Year to all and GOD BLESS US ALL!
@rushfanbytor Thanks! I used to have a Rush tribute band here in Tucson but we had to quit due to multiple medical problems with the members (including me and my lower back). :( I might try to do it again later on. The last two songs you mention have been done here on YT....
It sounded very very good. Not super-resonant but a deep, well recognized pitch kind of sound. The sound we all got used to hear on the first four albums, in particular on "2112". What a blast it was to play on this kit!
Good morning, congratulations on good technique, shows that you are dedicated enough, congratulations for the beautiful drums (I have a Sonor), tastefully muisical congratulations and congratulations for that shirt Sepultura. Signed - Dracu of Brazil.
Astro, I have been watching ur stuff for quite awhile and must say youmake all us Rush fans proud with your passion and entusiasm. Glad to see someone pick you up for a tribute band and I wonder if Niel has seen your stuff? Would be neat if called you and gave you kudos for a job well done......
@SIERRAHPBT This is not an easy question to answer. I started playing a long time ago, way before I ever heard of Rush. So, when I first tried to play Rush songs - in 1981 or so - I already has some good drumming basics, experience with other musicians on stage, etc. So I could play along a bit. Neil's playing of course pushed me to develop a lot more speed, complexity, independence, power and understanding of odd time signatures. It took years to be able to play the songs with confidence.
Very impressive, way to cover this song, do you ever play at shows or in a cover band. I love your vids and cover song. Best I have ever seen on the net. I would like to see you cover by-tor, circumstances and grand finale. I now listen to rush watching you jam.
MAN!!!! That has got to be the most fun to play over all others. I think with the exception of Hemispheres., this song I have played the most at full volume. That last kick at the 4:07 mark was what I was waiting for and you nailed it.. And the first 35 seconds you did the whole song justice. Your talents are toooo grate to waste. Hope you are out there using them daily/...
AT, I'm thrilled you got to play Neil's old kit. You deserve (and earned) that opportunity. Please let us know when the Rush Tribute band is gigging. I will fly out from Denver to catch your show. Fantastic job on Anthem!!! I agree with two of your fans below...can we expect Xanadu or any Dream Theater? Regardless, keep the Rush coming...you're awesome and thanks for the inspiration!
Hey there Astro......Been viewing for quite some time and have to say that you are a very gifted musician. Always fun to watch...Let me throw something at you, have you ever thought of covering Roger Daltreys Under a Raging Moon???? I know its a different style for you but I think you could nail...........
@charlesfdecker Not the entire song but some of the parts of the songs are based on what the band and Neil played during his audition. I'm sure they had no lyrics then but I can imagine easily that the riffs at the beginning had been ready to go way before the album, just waiting for the right drummer to show up.
In the 80s, Neil gave away several of his drumsets in a solo contest by Modern Drummer. The winner of the Slingerland kit never played it and sold it last year on Ebay for $26K. Anybody else came back to this video after Neil passed away?
I did, incredible this guy, nails it
I used to play this back when it first came out...and this MoFo is right on the money..his timing is flawless..the first 32 seconds are out of this world..and when he starts running the ride at 45 seconds it great!!! Neil will work you hard...
This guy rocks on the drums, wow !! I'm blown away......just like Neil !!!
I always totally enjoy watching you play!! Thank you for another great performance!! You really are awesome!!!
Geez, I keep forgetting how much energy it takes to play the beginning.
Excelente lo que hacés!!!!!
Sos un increible baterista!!!! Desde Argentina mis saludos para vos y segui subiendo videos!!! Sos Excelente!!!!!
My favourite Rush into EVER !!
Well done, young man! One of my favorite Rush drumming songs. You can certainly hear where he was influenced by Keith Moon. Especially the opening.
Damn.... I gotta check youtube more often. AWESOME JOB!!!! Love that song.
Holy crap!! LOVE it!!!! From one Rush fan and drummer to another!!
My wife got me drum lessons for my 40th birthday. Had my first one last night. Dude, this totally inspires me. Keep 'em coming.
wow!! amazing playing!!!
whoever is outside of that big window is either loving every second of it or runnin for cover!!!! Here's to good neighbours! btw...great playin keep it up! I can't get enough of the oddtime start of this song!

hey very well done matey. i'm a thrash head drummer of 47 years but still love rush and this is my fave song by them. you played it very well.
why is it that I only really appreciate the complexity of Neil's drumming after watching somone else try to duplicate it? He really makes it sound so seemless and effortless. Thank you Astrotama you are amazing!!

Sick drumming! Neil's my hero too !💘

wow you are amazing! I love jamming along with this on the guitar and hearing you nail Neal's parts with close to 100% perfection. Sheer talent!
Yessir, that was awesome. You and your skill are a great tribute to Neil and to drumming as a whole. Rock on and please post as much as you freaking can!
This solo is so physically demanding. Superb job my friend. Bravo!!!
Thank you!

WOW!! Just amazing man! I've been a Rush fan since '78 and you nailed it! It's really rare to find guys who can play as well as you! Cheers!!
And he does it again! Super job, man!
It sounded very very good. Not super-resonant but a deep, well recognized pitch kind of sound. The sound we all got used to hear on the first four albums, in particular on "2112". What a blast it was to play on this kit!
just brilliant
Never forget the Neil was also the primary lyricist of the band.

Awesome as to be expected. Have you thought of an overhead camera and split the view so we could see both perspectives of your playing?
Hey there Astro......Been viewing for quite some time and have to say that you are a very gifted musician. Always fun to watch...Let me throw something at you, have you ever thought of covering Roger Daltreys Under a Raging Moon???? On this album Neil was pounding like a maniac :D Great job as always Astro!
Keep it up, man. One video better than the other
