Off Bipolar Meds: Withdrawal from Seroquel! | SURVIVAL GUIDE

  • When I'm off Seroquel/Quetiapine temporarily it's terrible! Here is what I do to cope with the physical withdrawals, insomnia & manic symptoms. When the Pharmacy forgets to order my meds, I have an early flight in the morning or my Psychiatrist messes up, I have to be off Seroquel for 1 or 2 days. This results in nausea, throwing up, heat flashes & chills, dizziness, out of reality, me not sleeping, going manic, etc.

It has been day five days that I’ve been off of seroquel (200mg). I initially was on 25mg back in 2020, the doses kept inching up and by July this year I was on 800-1000mg. I wish us all the best and no one else can truly understand aside from anyone who has had to withdraw the withdrawal. It has been three nights of no sleep, no appetite and intense sensitivity to light. God bless everyone xx

You really should try to taper, I'm tapering myself from 500mg to 0 but it'll take me about 2 months. It helps so much with the withdrawals. Coming off of antipsychotics is super dangerous if you cold turkey. Please be safe.

Thank you for sharing your tips, I especially like the cleaning one :) I started taking 25mg last year, then started trauma therapy for my C-PTSD, and have been tapering down to 12.5mg then 6mg for the past several months. I just stopped taking it last week and for 2 nights of the week I really struggled with sleep and one night I could not sleep at all. I am continuing to withdraw from this medication, and am finding exercise very helpful for getting rid of excess dopamine that floods the system after Seroquel's dopamine-blocking effects have been removed. In my early 30s now, but I remember taking flights while manic in my 20s and that was not fun. I'm sorry to hear you didn't sleep last night, and hope things get better.

It’s a systemic problem I’ve experienced with pharmacies, the employees are incompetent, apathetic, so rude and lie to you! There are hundreds of reviews I’ve read of other customers having the same problems as me. It infuriates me because I NEED my medications. For some reason, low doses of antipsychotics work on me! I take 300-400 seroquel & 5mg olanzapine. My Psychiatist wants to try to take me off of seroquel, but for now 300 works most nights & I’ve even been waking up on my own without an alarm. Why don’t you tell your Psychiatist to prescribe you a lower dose? If she/he refuses, you should switch to a different psychiatrist! Mine does everything I ask of her.

@@LizziesAnswers I take a lower dose so I don't run out lol. I was on this dose for a long time before, but I got a new psychiatrist, and she upped it. I really do need a new psychiatrist she does not listen to me and a new pharmacy preferably a 24 hour one LOL. I think the antipsychotics help me, but they always make me gain so much weight! I'm on Zoloft, Strattera and Lamictal. I think it helps but I also suffer from ADHD which is a problem because the stimulants make me manic. I might need to get back on a stimulant so I will probably have to get back on an antipsychotic as well. It's hard to find a psychiatrist lately all the offices have long waiting lists.

It usually sets in on the third day of withdrawal and the itch is like nothing ive ever experienced prior to this. The more you scratch, the more it itches so you try to resist the urges which comes and go non stop . The majority of the pharmacy employees I interact with act apathetic and rude when I inform them I’m off meds & currently experiencing withdrawals. They just don’t sense the severity of people not having their meds. Sooo many people have illnesses that they can die from if they’re off their meds. I often have to call my insurance company & Psychiatist office in the pharmacy and then put it on speaker phone, because the pharmacists refuse to call. I am going to contact CSV corporate, because all of their pharmacies have the same issues! My psychiatrist recommended going to a small business pharmacy that isn’t a chain. @@joeking433 I finally did get off it. It took 3 months of tapering down. At 150 I thought I'd just jump to 0 mg which caused immediate mania. Sweats, chills, full body tremors and general unhappiness. It is the worst thing I've ever gone through. I should have gone more slowly but three months felt pretty slow.
I've been off it 3 months now. After two months my thinking became far more clear. I don't think I care to try anymore medications...which leaves me in a sub-optimal situation.
If someone wants to get off, they should do it with their doctor. I told mine I was done and planned to taper off as fast as I could. She said ok. But I went too quickly. If you're tapering, take your time. If I were to do it again (Which I'm not) I'd drop the dose by about 20% every two weeks. I went faster, had to go back on, and then finish the glide path down. My dr wants me to try Latuda which looks promising. However it's $20k a year and I'm with meds. I will do anything to never experience mania again.

I have a love // hate with seroquel, I went into the psych ward in September, and they took me off sertraline cold turkey - I couldn't remember 2 weeks of my hospital stay, just due to very little sleep. After that I went to a mental health IRTZ facility and was up wide awake again for 6 days and was having seizures. I eventually had to go back to the hospital and the psychosis was so serious, more so than before I thought I was in the afterlife and such. In the end I ended up hanging from a parking ramp trying to escape security after my Mom had to call security to keep me safe. I've been so delusional the last 11 years in and out of mania/delusions. Just want this to end, I shattered my heal when I fell from the parking ramp 3 stories up. I just need to stay sober, Seroquel seems to help, and has in the past but, sometimes I feel delusional and I hate the 12 hour sleep and then just want to sleep all day. ehhh i'll be okay i'm sure.

If your pharmacy can use FedEx, I highly recommend they do that. It saves my time; it saves their time. Because I would have to take a 15-minute bus ride to get there. And the day before I would have to go to the lab for blood work. They would be like, "sorry, we never got the results so we can't fill your meds". So, then I'd have to wait. 30 minutes later they'd be like, we have your lab work, but we haven't put your meds in bubble packs yet. Wait another 30 minutes. And then they would have to have a pharmacist check them. It was a nightmare. Now they can just mail them through FedEx on their own time, and I don't have to catch the bus. I would much rather pay the delivery fee.

To all that want to taper off Seroquel here s the way:do it very slowly and you will succeed. The key is very slow taper every time.Lower the dose about 10-20% every time and keep taking the new lower dose for at least 1-2 months.
For example if you take 100mg go to 75mg for 1-2 months at least(if you are good at 1 month go to next level if not keep it for 2 months). Then go to 50mg for 1-2 months , then go to 25mg for 1-2months and then to 12,5mg then to 6mg.Be careful in the end to taper slowly the 25mg and not cold turkey. If it needs to give it a little more time than 1-2 months believe me it will work. This needs time but believe me the success is sure and your body and mind will feel like a 14-15 years old kid after you wean off Seroquel!

Look for Joey Marino’s story in Mad In America if you want to understand the real reasons to never take Seroquel. Joey was the stand in actor for Anthony Edwards on the show ER as well as having his own side roll. Joey came off and developed tardive symptoms. Terrible ones. Akathisia, dystonia, and TD. Just like me, only I got mine from coming off a benzodiazepine. Losing sleep is the least of you worries. Dopamine antagonists should be nightly restricted. One pill can injure. Akathisia is brain injury. TD is brain injury. Dystonia is brain injury. No one tells you that you can have tardive symptoms that erupt months and even years after stopping. Antidepressants are the same way. Tardive akathisia after stopping years of cumulative use is rather common. That inner restlessness can stay for years.

@@joeking433 hey, thank you for taking the time to understand his story. I mean that. I got really injured stopping a benzodiazepine and have been raising awareness. Joey and I both had (well, I still have) chronic akathisia, tardive dystonia and TD in face and tongue. We met in the recovery groups. More like “living with” groups. I’m four years off Klonopin taken 1x/day at night and no where close to okay. Barbaric stuff. The sad part is akathisia is rather common. Anything with an associated “withdrawal” or “discontinuation syndrome” can cause akathisia. Especially withdrawal akathisia. Dr. Stuart Shipko posts in Mad In America. Look up his work with tardive akathisia and antidepressants. “SSRIs elephant in the room: Tardive Akathisia” my friend J.A. Carter Winward writes there as well. Now SHE’s definitely a case of Latuda and other dopamine antagonists. Poly pharmacy injuries and tardive injuries of all kinds coming off them. Most of my worst symptoms did not even erupt until I was 4-12 months off. I had no idea that was possible. Your average doctor or psychiatrist is clueless. Try going into the ER and say you were neurologically injured stopping Prozac six months ago and that things are getting worse. He will refer you to psychiatry and tell you it’s your anxiety or depression returning. I am horrified now having tried to get help. I went in knowing what I had. You reach the end of the internet when you get hurt this bad. Even movement disorder specialists do not have medication harm in their differential when my belief now is that it’s rampant.

I have been clean from Suboxone and Klonopin for 5 years. I used Kratom to get off the harder drugs and used 60gpd of Kratom for 3 years.
During all my withdrawals (Kratom/Kpin/Subs), I couldn’t sleep whatsoever and I was prescribed Seroquil and I would get 6-8 hours of sleep during withdrawal (8 if you take it with Clonidine).
I’m happy to say that I’m 7 days clean from Kratom and the worst of the withdrawals are behind me. I went 5 consecutive days without sleep before I spoke to my psychiatrist. He prescribed me 500mg for 2 nights, 250mg for 2 nights and 125mg for 2 nights. At day 14 without Kratom, I can get off Seroquil and take Melatonin and Clonidine for a few nights before I just take Clonidine as prescribed
