Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and mixed bipolar episodes in adults or used off-label for children over the age of 12.
It is also used for episodes of acute mania, depression disorders in adults and in children 10 years old and up. It is often used as an augmenter with antidepressant medications for treating depressive disorders.
There are several off-label uses for Seroquel which are being explored but remain outside of FDA approval, such as for insomnia, the treatment of dementia, addiction, delirium, and personality disorders.
At present, these off-label uses are being cautiously examined due to a lack of established dosing parameters and their effects on metabolic side effects, extrapyramidal adverse effects and potential safety concerns.
    Seroquel (Quetiapine) Withdrawal Symptoms
As is the case for most prescription psychoactive medications, using them for some extended period of time, i.e. several months or longer may lead to physical dependence. If the decision to come off the drug is made, stopping should never be done abruptly. Always seek medical oversight and guidance for safety.
Even when slowing the tapering off a drug, there can still be some significant withdrawals, which may be more severe if the prescription was for a very long time, such as years.
When withdrawing from Seroquel, the following symptoms may occur:
    Suicidal ideation or behavior
    Seroquel Withdrawal Psychosis
    Mania
    Insomnia
Hypersensitivity to light, sound, temperature, all sensory perceptions
    Vomiting
    Headaches
    Racing heart, tachycardia
Unusual mood swings, can change rapidly
    Slowed heartbeat
    Nausea
    Dizziness
    Anxiety
    Agitation
    Loss of concentration, can’t focus
    Depression

@@AlternativetoMedsCenter I have never seen a medication as strong as this one. Since I'm in hypomania, my doctor switched me to insomnia 25mg. I felt very bad: totally sedated, without concentration, sluggishness in the body, I slept for several hours straight, difficulty getting out of bed, tremors in my hands. The impression is that I had used a heavy drug

Starting at 15 years old I begin being heavily medicated, one of them being Seroquel, for various psychiatric disorders. I recently started Lamictal and my psychiatrist, whom I was only seeing for my second visit, told me to start up again on it for sleep and anxiety. After doing some research I decided to cancel our follow up and begin tapering back off the Lamictal. What myself and so many other children and adolescents are forced through by physicians due to psychiatric disorders is medical malpractice and abuse for our developing bodies. Ten years later and I am only now starting to understand that the many changes in my brain/body at the time were not simply normal parts of puberty and adolescence, but were from the so called "treatment" through extremely powerful psychiatric pharmaceuticals. I will never fully come back from everything my brain and body went through. Exposing the truth so we can make informed decisions is an extremely noble thing to do. Thank you.

Hey im now around 2and a half years on seraquel( for sleep)
I was instituted for depression and suicidal , not bi polar not scizo not anything just on the spectrome of spme sort of personal dissorder and i was a zombie for 4 months they justpumped me with300 mg of seraquel , 100mg morning lunch and evening , now ive went through some changes when i got out they switched it to 300 XR then( after a few months) to 200XR and 100 regular and then like 8months ago to 100mg and 100XR but at the same time ( at night) now about 4days ago idecided that because im still on thewaves of good ( relative good)and bad that this thing isnt helping so its time to try somthing else and got my psychiatrist to lower this thing sothe 100XR is off the table and wow what a dopamine rush actually thought i was manic for a while( never been manic b4)
And he the DR gave me zyprexa to help gettting of seraquel and maybe transition to it which after one time of taking i said fuck no , side affects to much for me aint happening so will see what will happen .
But dam i thought it was for my depression not for sleep but no one thought to tell me and i like a sheep blindedly followed orders.well not anymore time to get my life back

I came off Serequil! Withdrawal was awful. Once that went away I felt so much better. Serequil hurt my energy and took away my enjoyment of life. I didn't want sex with beautiful women. Serequil made me sleep eat and it was sugar I wanted! I gained weight. This drug is not worth the Risk!! You will sleep your life away and be groggy and a blank person. Withdrawal was bad migraine headaches, felt like I had the Flu! It was awful for the first week. I pushed through it and it was so worth it. I got my life back. Say no to Serequil or work with your doctor to taper off it. Once i was taking 600mg at night. I went down to 25mg and decided to stop before going down to 10mg. It is always gonna be hard. Fight through it. The withdrawal goes away and you will come alive again. Serequil just makes you a blahh person!!

Over 20 years taking this drug and I’m still at 25mg. I’m not working now, so I am going to try to kick it one more time. I also take 75mg of Lamotrigine and am very slowly tapering off that, one more time. I stopped vaping nicotine and dropped it to zero. I stopped drinking coffee everyday and drink one cup of tea. I can’t put my finger on why I’m doing this now. I think it is a overwhelming need to get back to my authentic self, which is the little Nora I was before things in my life accumulated beating me down. I feel for each and every one of you.

thank you for this, I have been on 900 mg of serequel for close to 10 years. My psychiatrist got my blood work in and freaked to see my cholesterol levels were off the chart and told me to cut out my mid day dose. I feel horrible, super restless, headaches, body aches, nausea, dizziness, nasal drip. She never told me about anything I should suspect. I had originally came in to complain of other issues. Like waking up with a nose bleed and then falling into a wall and my dresser.....crawling skin, freezing cold and then unbearably hot. My Lithium levels were fine, so they suspected my Neurontin....but asked if my side effects were worse than me feeling suicidal. I feel like no one is listening...no one gets it, and then I come to find this video and it is a breath of fresh air. Thank you a thousand times over.

Prescribed for sleep: When I was truck driving my hrs were almost from midnight to 4am in which we had to get up and get ready, and drive till we were done. Then in 2015, when I was no longer working, I have prescribed it for my sleep problems.. Within 15-20 minutes it would knock me out, but effects would make me tired into next day. Very potent. So I was switched to Ambien... I had issues because of the hrs that I worked. Sometimes I'm up and almost any hr of the night or getting up and can't sleep, but then end up sleeping during the day at various hrs.

I am diagnosed with BiPolar-1 and CPTSD. To say that I used to be highly unstable, emotionally and behaviourally, would be a massive understatement. I also have a near psychotic aversion to sleep; more than simple insomnia. I have been on 600mg of Quetiapine/Seroquel for around 13yrs now. My psychiatrists put me through the usual mill of drugs that were worse than the disease over several decades. I finally had Seroquel suggested to me and my first 50mg tablet flattened me out for an entire weekend. My BP1 and CPTSD disturbances settled down, virtually overnight. I would describe the state I was in as 'feeling normal' for the first time in my life. That sensation of normality lingers still. I have no particular side-effects to speak of.
So, having watched this video and read my way through the comments, I'm wondering about the people having trouble cutting back on Seroquel. To be honest, I wonder if they're having trouble because the dose they're on is actually the RIGHT DOSE for them? Most have described the sensation of their underlying condition rearing it's head again, and I thought that was unremarkable. I was thinking it would be the same as if I had a toothache but cut back on the dosage of pain killers. With respect, am I wrong in this thinking, and why? Thanks 🙂

I'm diagnosed with Borderline/emotionally unstable personality disorder. I believe that I have complex childhood PTSD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The most quetiapine/Seroquel I ever took was 200mg. I had a traumatic end to my former marriage and ended up being homeless three times in a year. This led to a psychotic break. At the time of this psychotic break, I was on zero medication. I just wasn't sleeping. The chronic insomnia and lack of therapy cause the psychotic break. I've just over 90 days off of quetiapine but I'm currently on Zoplicone every other day but my doctor and I are going to try more intensive sleep skills to try to get my brain to re-wire. I would have never come off quetiapine without psychotherapy. the lack of sleep and other withdrawals are brutal and it's only by using therapy skills that I'm able to stay grounded. I have a lot of support, clinical, employment and from other mental health peers. I took Quetiapine/Seroquel for 8 years. I'm definitely not against medication but it really is a short-term solution and people should be intensive therapy....especially if they have a severe life-threatening diagnosis.....long term psychotherapy is the only way forward I believe.

I was not psychotic, or manic, I just had sleeping problems due to drinking. and since tapering off seroquel I have the absolute worst mania spikes, anxiety I've experienced I believe (went through alcohol detox cold turkey years ago) To me, the mania in itself and sudden dopamine reuptake is SO scary, it's overwhelming, I want to tell people how crazy this is but they inevitably end up seeing that im manic and then I get more paranoid. I'm going through withdrawal now. I've gone through withdrawal from amphetamines, alcohol, benzos, nicotine, etc.. I must say, Seroquel withdrawal is seriously nasty. I'm experiencing nausea, headaches, insomnia, shakiness, all sorts of issues with my digestion, agitation, memory issues, and am struggling to concentrate and make decisions. The dishes are piling up. I have to go back to work in a week. I'm trying really hard not to take a dose, because although it's not addictive, the withdrawal almost makes me miss it. It's also worth mentioning that I tapered down to 25mg before going cold turkey. I have missed higher doses before and experienced nausea and discomfort the following day, but I'm currently about a week into stopping a low dose and am sick of being sick.

My psychiatrist put me on this because adderall was causing insomnia. I stopped taking it two days ago because I was tired of being groggy all the time and started experiencing psychosis so looked this up. IM Lucky I found this video after only 2 months of taking it instead of down the road. Just flushed my pills down the toilet. I already got a Xanax dependency, I can’t handle both.

they really need to stop overmedicating people. I took setraline on and off for years. It works for me. doctor tried other anti-depressants but I just push for more therapy instead. I had a psychotic break before I was put on quetiapine/seroquel but I tell you what after 8 years of being on it my big stupid brain started to override it! It's a great anti-psychotic/sedative in the short term but in the long term your brain will find a way around it and if your bio-physiology doesn't like it you are screwed. My body seems to tolerate medication well but my bid stupid brain is neurodivergent and will find every which way to diverge from the bio-chemistry of the drug. My neurodivergent brain is happy on psychotherapy though. Lol! It can't override therapy skills. So I'm sticking with psychotherapy from now on and drugs only in a short term emergency on a low dose and not more than 2 types of drugs at once!!! Addiction runs in my family....now I know why....their big stupid brain won't shut up and no one taught them how to make it calm the f down without drugs/substances.

(I'm a very very shy person) I can truly think straight without being too nervous. In stead of losing motivation for things, I actually gained much motivation for many things since my fear and nervousness no longer get in the way of the things I wanna do. It also makes me sleep like a baby.
I tried to get off it. IMPOSSIBLE. I'll be super nervous during the day again. I'll stay up all night. Yes, ALL NIGHT. It's hell.

I had been taking temazepam 30 mg for sleep 15 years without problems by my primary who retired the psychiatrist told me it was too dangerous however the seroquel causes more unsteadiness than anything I have ever used for insomnia. Being on Seroquel has also been like living in a place of no hope or drive to do anything but sit in front of a tv.

I was prescribed seroquel about a year and a half ago when i was like 16, i started at like 300mg, now im down to like 25. there were times where i ran out and couldn't take it, and within a day or 2 of not taking it, i could already feel the withdrawals. it was fuckin insane. i would have insomnia, nausea, and a huge loss of appetite. i was able to sleep completely fine on my own before it, but now ive become dependent on it for sleep. i once couldnt sleep for 72 hours bc i didnt have anymore. lol

Besides it making me feel drugged as well as very tired I have a terrible cough every since I started this medication. It will not go away, it is a dry cough. I just stock up on cough drops. I must say before this I used Xanix or Clonosapam. I've also smoked marjunia to help me sleep. Only sometime that in itself doesn't work either. I sweat profusely from the smallest bit of exercise, severe bouts of mania, literally no happiness from within, as in I can't feel pleasure and use drugs, sex and food to feel anything. I've woken up with severe akathisia to where I freaked and went to the ER dozens of times now. But I have ptsd from a prolonged bout of sleeplessness and any disruption causes severe suicidal ideation. I feel like I'm stuck. 👍

Another possible complication is higher cholesterol levels (currently at 350....yikes....). Mine have skyrocketed from being on being on the Seroquel. In addition, I've been having issues with my heart rate going REALLY high during my runs (I run a few days a week), which has killed my pace and endurance. I'm in the process of tapering off of the medicaiton (had been on 150mg since May, now on 100mg), and hopefully, things will improve there. Thankfully, my EKG came out normal, and so I'm going to be waiting on getting further heart testing done, in case Seroquel is the cause.

I have Borderline/emotionally unstable personality disorder with autistic traits and complex childhood trauma. No one should come off meds alone. I live in the UK and the healthcare is free. I argue to come off as I don't want long-term complications related to the weight gain. I'm 42. I haven't had an inpatient crisis in 8 years though so they know I'm stable enough. Please speak to a psychotherapist who can signpost you with coping strategies every week to deal with the withdrawals. my cholesterol is stable and I refused to let them put me on statins...I told them to watch me lower it with diet and exercise....it's more my diet.
