IIRC part of the lore with the figthers is that most (if not all) of them suffered some sort of severe trauma in their lives. So this game is based around traumatized, weirdly sexualized female characters fighting each other in a digital world for... some reason. Wonderful.
If you want girls kissing in your fighting games, maybe make all the characters couples, and all the fights lovers quarrels. Honestly, I actually really like the idea of unlockable police reports and the like as a storytelling method for large cast-centric games such as fighting games. Fits really well with this very chuuni fighting game premise I've been kicking around in my head. That said, the fact that you have to grind points for them and also use the same points for getting other unlockables to buy the reports is... unpleasant, and you really need _something_ to latch onto and find enjoyable and interesting about the characters without needing to read these; else it's like "why should I bother unlocking and reading this?".

Mini what happened from a former majesco qa guy here: This game was part of a contract with us doing another game with the developer. They did a game for us and we published this for them kinda deal. This game was sooo bad in test. We had a bunch of people on our qa team that regularly played fighting games on lunch break and knew the genre. We were writing bugs up along the lines of "the combo meter still goes up but if the opponent blocks midway thru it gets blocked and therefore its not a true combo." There were also some silly interactions with a certain person on the development team in the bug database. Edit: oh yeah the best part of testing this was discovering i think it was the design doc for the game. Apparently several of the girls likenesses were "inspired by" certain internet porn stars. Edit 2: after talking to a fellow former coworker he remembered it was suicide girls, and how he didn't think they had permission for the likenesses.
I felt like a trigger code was activated in me when I learned the KF studio made the Adventure Time Card Wars and TMNT Rooftop run. What a weird way to be reminded of my childhood classics.

I mostly played chaos and they did have hidden moves, I triggered one with chaos but I honestly couldn’t figure out how I did it. I did a combo of around 10-12 hits and the chaos launched the opponent and pulled out an rpg to blast the opponent away. Me and my buddy were both like “how the hell did you do that?”
Gotta be honest, kinda shocked at how relatively restrained the body types were. But the problem was that they all seemed to sit within a set of narrow bounds, their costuming was largely pretty similar and the theming really didn't come through.

Hey Matt. So, there's this fighting game from 1976 called Heavyweight Champ made by Sega that is literally THE very first game ever made where two fighters face off against each other. If I'm not mistaken, it's actually Lost Media, but there does exist some gameplay footage from a news report from 1977. There is only 1 known cabinet still in existence, & it has a smashed bezel & seems to be nonfunctional. I know you really dont cover Lost Media or anything, but i thought that was pretty interesting & just wanted to share 😊
I remember a video of the top ten worst fighting games (Shaq-Fu was number one on it. Feels so long ago.) mentioning this game and bringing up: 1: The game was weirdly hard to find. 2: The characters all use the same base model. and 3: Warchild is 17.
The name of this game just begs to be chanted. Like frat bros repeating "Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!" I can imagine a catfight being egged on by "Girl Fight! Girl Fight! Girl Fight!"
I played Spartacus, not like extensively, but for a couple weeks like 10 years ago, I honestly never thought I would hear of it's existence again just because it wasn't good enough to be that memorable, and not horrible enough to be like, a video essay about.
It usually ends up being a game made for the horniness first, gameplay second. KOF, Tekken, Street Fighter and especially DOA all have their horniness and characters we all think are hot as fuck, but the fact the game is put first and they're just additions is why the game ends up being, y'know, good.
Is it just me or do all of the characters look like identical models? All the same height, wearing the same heels, the same hips, waist and bust and very similar faces. Only the clothing and hair actually appears to be different.

Fun fact ..the one of the main developer of this game would eventually make an indie game called yandere simulator...a game that was in beta for 6 years and was eventually canceled before being finished.
The game has one thing going for it... There's a Madcat/Timberwolf from Battletech in the background at the very start, and 5:56 XD EDIT: Hooray! It got called out
I still have this game. I don't think it's too bad. I seen and played worse. But lack of other modes including very terrible story mode and generic characters made this a forgettable title. I remember playing as the blonde and the South African military girl. Battle High is a pretty bland but ok fighting game.
The futuristic or "virtual" menu and HUD design from games of this era now look like the fake imitations of them you saw in TV and movies at the time more than ever.
Oh. My. God. This is all a VR experience? You KNOW that all these "sexy girls" are ABSOLUTELY just guys playing as girl avatars with voice changers. All the "lore" is just their OC work. The lack of variability in the characters? It stems from this universe's equivalent to VR Chat.
holy crap, I was actually thinking about Fight Angel by the end. both games look very similar indeed, but Fight Angel had the guts to go all-in with the sex-appeal aspect by having the characters go completely "naturel" as the match progresses (idk about the Steam version, I pirated it once to see how it was)
i LOVED spartacus legends when i was a kid because it was free, but also because of the execution mechanics. casually popping some guy's head off like i'm scoring a flash knockout in a UFC game felt so good to me then
Want to play a much much worse girls-only fighter? An obscure PC-only game called "Metal and Lace: Battle of the Robo Babes." It debuted on the PC-88, before coming to the US and DOS, which should tell you what you're in for.
Ningyou Tsukai : it's even got a anime adaption... that for some reason has its title translated as "Sexorcist" even through it has nothing to do with magic or exorcism.
I played Spartacus Legends. It went as these games often do. Decent early game. Nice progression and then enemy power creep so extreme that you HAVE to spend money to make further progress. And if I remember correctly your fighters could die or get hurt so if you had a great fighter you could lose him forever. Cant remember how much fun it was to actually play though.
I actually did play that gladiator game. Xbox360 I think... or maybe early PS4? You had to gain and train fighters, who had ARPG/ MMO loot style quality ranks and such BS. But, if you lost, they died(IIRC). And you were pretty much screwed... unless you purchased fighter with OP stats from the shop. So the game pay walled hard! From what I remember, the game play actually wasn't bad. But... the monetization was brutal! So I didn't play more than a few hours.
Another great video. Plus LOVE hearing that "Guardian Heroes" music randomly. Excellent choice, sir. Plus "Heavy Metal: Geomatrix" nailed this cyber world fighting tournament premise with an awesome soundtrack.
The techno bopper during the Mechanics section reminds me a lot of the “BEEP BOOP BOOP BOP BOOP” track from the SpongeBob episode “Robot Krabs”. Also, the transition music between sections also reminds me of the opening riff to Falling In Reverse’s “Zombified”
Not to be confused with Fighting Angels on the PS2 which he should probably cover here. A budget game that's pretty much just fan service and nothing else. It was never realised in the US but us Europeans got it. Yay?

Fun fact ..the one of the main developer of this game would eventually make an indie game called yandere simulator...a game that was in beta for 6 years and was eventually canceled before being finished.
Man, that rabbit hole keeps getting deeper. I forgot about that one, I don't know if it's actually a shame but, shame? it got cancelled.
The game has one thing going for it... There's a Madcat/Timberwolf from Battletech in the background at the very start, and 5:56 XD
EDIT: Hooray! It got called out
I have been waiting for this entry ever since this series started.
Gotta love the game being called "girl fight" but the two girls on the cover don't seem they are interested in fighting..
Matt: You know know better. Mad Cat is an Inner Sphere designation, the Clans call it a Timber Wolf.
Oh. My. God.
This is all a VR experience?
You KNOW that all these "sexy girls" are ABSOLUTELY just guys playing as girl avatars with voice changers. All the "lore" is just their OC work. The lack of variability in the characters? It stems from this universe's equivalent to VR Chat.
holy crap, I was actually thinking about Fight Angel by the end. both games look very similar indeed, but Fight Angel had the guts to go all-in with the sex-appeal aspect by having the characters go completely "naturel" as the match progresses (idk about the Steam version, I pirated it once to see how it was)
Detractor memes will get you banned dood. Another fun video, big ups
See, this is why I just mained Variable Geo.
7:29 made me actually do a doubletake. That's actually just a goddamned Timberwolf/Mad Cat in the background wtf
This series is so entertaining.
Oh boy, the journey to dethrone Iron and Blood begins
I’m SO here for it
Edit: Did I see ALONE IN THE DARK on the list of credited games at 4:17 ?
4:32 and DarksydePhil spends thousands of dollars on it
i LOVED spartacus legends when i was a kid because it was free, but also because of the execution mechanics. casually popping some guy's head off like i'm scoring a flash knockout in a UFC game felt so good to me then
Wait... That Viper chick has same design as Viper Ning from Naraka:Bladepoint which came out almost 10 years later... Dafuq? 😮😮😮
As cheesy as it is, Warchild is pretty rad name.
I cannot believe Matt made this entire 17 minute long video with one hand!
The only good thing about Girl Fight, Gabe Castro released the OST for free.
Dont think I didnt notice the SOR4 training soundtrack in there. Loved it. This video cracked me up as they always do - superb stuff as always man.
That box art isnt a good sign...
You can tell this game hasn’t showered in a WHILE
Don't they know that showering is the sexiest thing ever? The game had one job and it failed at even that!
Wow, I actually remember browsing the marketplace and seeing this game, and proceeding to move onto other more interesting looking games. 😆
I'm trying to find the track name for the music playing during the Mechanics section.
So. Thanks to Matt. I got Fight Angel. It's like 40% half cooked fighting game and 60% fan service. 11/10
Not to be confused with Fighting Angels on the PS2 which he should probably cover here. A budget game that's pretty much just fan service and nothing else.
It was never realised in the US but us Europeans got it. Yay?
