CORRECTION: Holding the Backbone button does in fact take you to the Playstation Home Screen. Hold the Backbone button for about a half second to access the PS5 Control Center sub menu without using the touchscreen as mentioned in the video. Sorry for the confusion.
You can still do this as well. A short hold (1 second) pulls up the control center and a long hold (2 seconds or more) takes you to PS home. It takes a second to get the timing right but the feature is most definitely there
@@c_l_a_d_d_i_x Got it. Thanks for the tip. I edited my comment to reflect this. 🙂
Who remembers having a psp ?
Not me. I was a broke college kid. 😂 They looked cool though.
Still have mine
@@redneckpotatoe3549 Nice.
Still have 2 of mine lol
Heck yeah!
Thanks for this video! I also was not aware that I could take off the rubber pieces!! Helped a lot thanks again!!
You’re welcome! Glad I could pass the knowledge along. 🙂
Thanks for your review, Bo. Had I not already ordered a Backbone One, I would have used your affiliate link. You did a very thorough review and brought this subscription model that I otherwise didn’t know about to my attention. I appreciate that, so I dropped a like and subscribed to your channel. Thanks and take care!
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind words, like, and sub! Have a great weekend, and happy gaming. 🙂
This is actually a thorough review and it's very helpful and I'm looking to get one. Ps. It's a 1 year free trail and then it's $40 a year.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the review helpful. It's definitely worth considering the one-year free trial offer and then deciding if the $40 a year is worth it for you.
Thanks for this
1 month free trial**
Good work Bo you just blew my mind. I had no idea they could detach that way! I literally did the same thing you did and stopped myself because I was in fear of breaking the controller!
I totally understand. I was afraid I was going to break it at first too! Glad I could help you figure it out. 🙂 Happy gaming!
bro, thank you for this. OK my dad got me one of these for my birthday and my birthday is in nine days and I was so worried about it not being perfect or being uncomfortable or anything else but now that you’ve showed this video and made it feel so relaxed now knowing that I can realize that my parents didn’t waste $100 and I knew they weren’t now that you’ve done this. I feel so relaxed knowing that I can actually sleep, knowing that I’m going to have one of the gaming consoles in the world
Hey bro, happy early birthday! Your parents nailed it with the gift. Game on and have a blast!
Thank you this was actually worthwhile
YW. Thanks for watching!
The backbone button actually works as a PlayStation home button if you press it for about 3 seconds it exits the game I wish they did something a little different but it does work
Thanks for the tip. I did eventually figure that out thanks to viewers like you! Kind of a hidden feature. Wish it was a little more obvious. Thanks again!
I'm so glad i watched your video as i had no idea about those fiddly black things around the usb plugin. I've been taking my case of every time since today 😅
Awesome that the video could make a difference for you! No more case-off struggles from now on!
Have you tried holding the backbone button for a couple seconds? I think if you press and hold the button it will act as a PlayStation button or Xbox button depending on what you’re playing on ( ps remote play or Xbox remote play or cloud gaming on either )
Yes! 👍 I’ve tried it. Some others in the comments suggested that and it works. Thanks!
good vid thanks man
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Do otter box cases fit, i tried but i cant get mine to fit not sure if its just to big of a case
First, make sure you've removed the pre-installed adapters. You don't want any adapters. Second, really thick cases still don't fit. I know Otter Box makes different styles. If you have their thinnest case it might. Not sure. Their cases are generally beefy.
If you uninstall the backbone app the orange button becomes the ps button but have to hold it for half a second inside the streaming/remote play apps.
That’s an awesome tip. Thanks for sharing!
Does the usb port on Backbone supports audio or only for charging? I've always use a flat usb dongle for my wireless 2.4ghz earbuds when I play on my phone.
Sure I can use the headphone jack, but now I prefer the dongle because it's wireless and has lower latency than Bluetooth.
That’s a good question. I’m not sure, and I don’t have a way to test it. Theoretically it could work. You can use that port to turn it into a wired controller, so it can transfer data. But that feature is also blocked behind a pay wall(their subscription service). But I can’t say anything for sure. If you buy one and find out, I would be very curious to know the answer!
10/10 video
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I say this is a 10/10 comment from a 10/10 person. 😊
Wow everything about that controller seems really cool except for that goofy feature of not allowing you to use it on PC unless you pay a subscription, that's just unnecessarily annoying lol
Completely unnecessary. Which is a shame, because it’s a really nice controller.
Got my Nintendo emulator on my iPhone now I just need the backbone
Delta does support controllers like the Backbone. I did a whole video about it a couple of days ago. 🙂
If I already subscribe this month and unlock the feature to use it in ipad, then I unsubscribe the next month, would I still be able to use it on my ipad?
Good question. No, it will disable that feature without the subscription.
FYI guys the L2 and R2 button double as your start and select buttons in some games.
👍
Can i ask if it has vibration? In the remote play?
No. Unfortunately it doesn't support the haptic feedback of the PS5, so there's no vibration, even on older games like Uncharted Remastered.
please help, just bought my backbone and it is stuck on connect to backbone. i tried power to backbone to see if power is passing thru to phone and it is not! i cannot get it to work
It’s a plug and play device. If you have it plugged in and it’s not connecting or pass through charging your phone, I would contact backbone or the retailer about getting a replacement.
in the backbone app, theres an option to use the 3 dots button on the left controller side to boot up the ps app.
I looked for that, but couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks for the suggestion though!
If you press the backbone button for one second it acts as the PlayStation home button.
Dang and I got the 1st gen of the backbone one like 6 months ago 😢
Oh man. That stinks. Maybe you could sell it and buy the new one? 🤷♂️ 😕
The backbone button works like the PS button. Just have to press it for half second or hold it
Yeah. I realize that now. 🤦♂️ It takes you to the home screen. But it still doesn't open the PS5 Control Center sub menu.
@@BoKnowsGaming it does. Try pressing for half second or less
Holy crap, you’re right! That’s such a tricky timing. Too quick and you go to the Backbone App. Too long and you go to the Home menu. How did you figure that out?!
Does the gen 2 support speed chargers?
I know I plugged in my 20 W charger to the USB-C port and it did charge my phone, but I can’t confirm that it was fast charging my phone. So it did work with my fast charger, but I don’t know if it was throttling the charge or not.
@@BoKnowsGaming ok, thanks!
Can you use this out of town and away from your console??? Can I play games right from my ps5 library while across the country
Yes. In fact I just did that two days ago. BUT, you have to link your PS5 to your phone in person the first time. So do that before you travel. And you’ll need a good internet connection both at home and wherever you’ve traveled to. You can download the PlayStation Remote Play app from the App Store and it should walk you through the steps to set it up. When it works, it’s awesome. 😎
@@BoKnowsGaming sweet!! I want to play TLOU & TLOU 2 remastered on my trip
@@4second405 Nice. Happy gaming, my friend!
I love this controller but as for their subscription, as crazy as it is that it even exist for such an expensive controller, I think they only offer year subscriptions for $29.99 a year.
I could see charging a one time fee of $10-$15 to unlock all the app features. But locking hardware features behind a subscription paywall, at any price, is not a trend I want to see spreading.
Ty for telling about the subscription. I almost bought this controller just for that reason. What BS
You're welcome. Subscriptions are the new accessories, apparently. I even saw an ad last week that was showing off how you can use it to play on iPad. No mention of the subscription in the ad. It's very deceptive. It's a shame, because the controller is genuinely nice.
Just a little step in here, you don’t need the subscription to play the games, the subscription (backbone+) just moves all the games that you own to the app for an easier launching experience, like the steam launcher but not yk?
Do u know if samsung s23 ultra will fit
It will work with it, yeah. Whether or not it fits with a case depends on the case you have.
Do you need a ps5 to play on the backbone ?
No. It works with GamePass, Apple Arcade, or any other mobile game or gaming service that has controller support. It’s pretty awesome. 😎
I love this controller but don’t like that they lock some features behind a paywall
Me either. It wouldn’t bother me if the app was an additional purchase, but the iPad usage being locked behind a subscription is a no go for me.
Is there not another way to stream rather then using there app?
To Stream Playstation? Yes. You need the Playstation Remote Play app. You don't ever HAVE to use the Backbone App to use the controller. They just try to get you to.
For me, until the PS Portal allows Web authentication for public Internet, I will stick with Backbone.
Good call. Smart.
Could I open it and mod it so I can use some of the features?
I have no idea. And unless you really know what you're doing I wouldn't recommend trying. It's an expensive controller.
If i don’t have a Xbox or a ps5 can i still buy this and play apex from my phone?
No. Apex Legends isn't available on mobile phones at this time. Thank you for watching!
Thank you!!
You’re welcome.
HOW DID U TAKE THOSE OFF?
The black rubber adapters? There are three little notches on each one for you fingernail. The you kind of putty them toward the center. They’re in there really tight. Especially the first time.
Not really related but I was flying out of the Denver airport and one of the kiosk ladies was playing PUBG on her phone😂
That's hilarious. Was she using a controller or touch controls?
Can you test if a female usb-c to male usb-c/usb-a connected to your PC through the usb-c on the controller that goes into your phone would work?
It works with gen 1, just curious to know if they blocked this hack with the gen 2 version
That’s a really interesting idea. I don’t have a female usb-c cable though, so I can’t test that right now. I’m really curious to know the answer to your question though. Haha.
@BoKnowsGaming it works on the Backbone One 1st gen. Hence, you'd be able to connect and use the controller on your PC when using the cable I mentioned earlier; bypassing the need for a backbone+ subscription. If you ever try it out, please let me know 🙏
Will do. Thanks for the advice!
I can confirm this works on the Gen 2 with my tab s7+
I tried it but ultimately disappointed because it’s too small on my hands. Im glad i got to return it and bought the gamesir G8
That's cool. I understand. I haven't tried the g8 yet, but I want to!
@BoKnowsGaming nothing bad with the backbone but after playing after 1 hour. My hands were starting to feel uncomfortable for my hands😭
I get it. Gotta find the best controller for you. Everyone's hands are different.
They should've made the thumbsticks bigger for this 2nd gen version. If these are still comparable to joycons, then good luck playing FPS's. It sucks.
They’re not identical, but they are comparable. Definitely not full size. Full size sticks would’ve been better. But then what reason would we have to upgrade when they put them in V. 3? 😬🫢
Can i play my ps5 games on my phone with this?
Through PlayStation Remote Play, yes you can.
@@BoKnowsGaming no way? Sweet! Ima get this for sure now! My toddler son took over my television. Thanks for the video and reply 🙌🏽
Haha. I know all about that. Happy to help. Have fun!
Does this work good for codm or is it confusing
It works great for it once you're in a match. You have to use touch controls through the main menu though, and you also have to go to the settings first and check this tiny box that says "Enable Controller" or something like that. Otherwise it won't work. But I had a fun time playing with the controller.
You didn't include the price as to why they are both popular.
I stated that the price is $100, but I don't think that makes it popular. Do you think that's a fair price?
Hold the orange button to go to PS5 homescreen.
TY. I thought I tried that, but I guess not. It totally works! You still have to use the touchscreen to see those quick menu items though. I appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
Hold that orange button for 1 sec for menu
I have the black backbone gen 1 from long time ago and I never use it and I don't like the joystick I mostly play shooter games I'm thinking about getting the shadow blade 2 gamepad
Yeah, if you don’t like those joy-con size sticks this probably isn’t for you. Shadow Blade 2… is that the one by Nubia? 🤔 I think I saw that recently. Looks really nice, but pricey. 💰 I might have to add it to my list of things to review. 🙂
@@BoKnowsGaming Naw you know the gamesir g8 galileo gamepad right the shadow blade 2 is just red magic rebranded version but in all black
@@BoKnowsGamingShadow blade 2 It the exact samething as gamesir g8 galileo but in all black and some logo change to red magic logo
Cool. I like it.
@@BoKnowsGaming I personally don't like the colors of the gamesir g8 galileo that why I said shadow blade 2
does it work on ipad mini?
*fit
No. Just phones.
6:38 he became a legend 😅
You talking about my improv Stadia joke? 😂
@@BoKnowsGaming lol yes the blooper made it 10x funnier
Haha. Thanks!
I love Backbone One gen 2. Too bad it doesn't fit an 8" tablet.
I’ve heard from a lot of people that wish it could fit a tablet. I think they should really consider that for Gen 3.
@@BoKnowsGaming Yeah. I have the gen 2. It's one of the best telescopic controllers around. The moment they release gen 3 that fits an 8 inch tablet, I'd buy that, too!
It $40 a year just to act like a hub for games. You don’t need it to use the controller. Just wait for sale on this thing, full price is not worth it.
It’s not a monthly subscription? Just a flat, annual price?
@@BoKnowsGaming you get a year free then they charge annually $39.99
Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the info! 🙂
Does it work with galaxy a32 5g do you know???
I don’t know, but Backbone’s website says that “Android devices running Android 10.0 or later with USB-C are supported.”
Will this work away from home ?
Yes! It was designed for exactly that purpose. Of course, and game that requires an internet connection, including services like PlayStation Remote Play, will still require internet no matter where you are. But the controller definitely works away from home.
@@BoKnowsGaming thanks I've been deciding between this one and the portal but there seems to be alot more cons to the portal
@@BoKnowsGaming oh one last thing. Will I have access to my playstation games ? Another video on another profile said you can only use backbone +games
@@Talkbookishwithme Of course. You can download the Playstation Remote Play app on your phone right now. Follow the steps in the app to link it to your Playstation. Then when you get your controller you can open up the PS Remote Play app and stream all your games from your console. No backbone + subscription needed. 🙂
@@Talkbookishwithme Personally, I'd rather have this than the portal because you can use it to play any game on your phone that supports a controller. That could be something from the app store or xbox game pass. Anything. The portal limits you to streaming from your console.
I play on an android tablet with the cord without a subscription with no problem
What kind of cord?
Okay not gonna get it cause of that damn subscription.
😂 I can’t say I blame you. It’s a really great controller, but that part aggravates me too.
This is a lie I have a Google pixel 8 pro doesn't fit with case also these adapters doesn't do anything can't even get them on or off nothing different from the first one all Cap 🧢
I had trouble removing the adapters the first time too. But I assure you they do come out, and my iPhone 15 Pro Max fits with the case on, and there’s room to spare. No cap 🧢
Thanks for watching. Hope you get the adapters out so you can start gaming!
It is 27US Dollars a year
Cool.
Um, the portal has. A bigger screen. Dual sense controllers with all dual sense feathers like haptic feedback etc. lolol and yea the PlayStation button. It’s just better than the back bone.
That’s true, and the portal is great for PlayStation and the few games that take advantage of the dual sense. But this allows for much more versatility and a greater library of games from multiple services. So really it all depends on what you want to play. There’s nothing wrong with either way or either device.
The backbones analogs are nowhere near as comfortable as the portals. I’m sorry, the portal got it when it comes to playing PlayStation games. The backbone only shines when playing games on mobile. In every other aspect, the portal outshines it.
Oh for sure. The Portal sticks are definitely better! If all you want to play is PS5 on the go, the Portal is the best option. I completely agree with you on those points. I'm just saying if you also want to use GamePass, emulate retro games, play Apple Arcade, and utilize SteamLink, then the Backbone or similar mobile controller is the better choice. Again, it really depends on what your interests are.
@@BoKnowsGaming Agreed!
@@GamingWithAce85One problem I found with my Portal is the micro-stuttering. It refreshes at 59.94hz, most smartphones have a refresh rate of 60+. Because of this, you get micro-stutter on the Portal and it can be quite jarring in some games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
Gamesir G8 Galilleo is way better
I already plan on reviewing that one next. 🙂
not for COD mobile on Android.
We get Extorted all the time in life smh
Well, I'm not paying them for that one. Haha.
Subscription to use usb c port as display out? Lol, screw this company! I'm not getting near their products.
It's a weird choice. Imagine if you bought a LG tv and they said, "You own the tv, but if you want the HDMI ports to work you have to pay us $5 a month." That would be absurd.
People really be saying a gen 2 is better just so you dont have to take a case off?? My case is easily removable so its not a big deal
I never had the gen 1, so I can’t compare them. I’m just reviewing it like it is. And yeah, a LOT of people are more interested in a controller that allows you to keep your phone case on. That was probably the biggest complaint I heard from people about the 1st gen Backbone.
Thanks for watching! 🙂
@@BoKnowsGamingOh alright! Thank you!
No problem. See you around. 🙂
@@BoKnowsGaming of course!
Not needing to remove a case every time makes it objectively better...
$3.99/month is NOTHING lol
I don’t care if it was 5¢/month. There shouldn’t be a subscription fee on hardware like this. It would be like paying $3.99/month to use the space bar on my computer. It’s ridiculous.
Didn’t need a subscription to use Google Stadia. Please do better research before taking shots
That's true. There were about 4 games you could play for free including Destiny 2. But I also purchased games and subscribed for a few months, and you definitely got the most out of the service as a subscriber. I loved that controller. I still use it on PC sometimes. My joke was meant to be light hearted and fun. Sorry it offended you.
Terrible review
Bummer that you didn't like it, but thanks for watching anyway!
@@BoKnowsGaming actually it was a great review since u replied!!
Haha. Alright! 👍👍
