At least your an honest Mechanic and that means a lot you can hold your head up because a lot of other mechanics would have said that they need to replace th hole pump you are th best 👏
Thanks Ron! Ive found much more *success Just charging what someone needs. In the long run they and their frineds come back! :) Plus it makes me happy!
Just a quick mechanics trick; when loosening tight bolts, especially rusted 10mm or greater. Tighten just a wee bit it first, then loosen. I find this makes it easier sometimes.
The Car Wizard also said cleaning out bolts before attempting to take them out will almost always prevent stripping (while using the right head, of course). He seems like indeed a great wizard so I do trust his word. 👍
Wouldn't it be easier to use a razor knife to slice the oring to get it off..? It shouldn't score the metal any more than the point of that pick... especially if you just pushed it through instead of slicing...
Great job on being honest ! Any other mechanic I know would of gave them the classic “I’ll give you a thousand”. Fix the issue and flip it for more . We need more people like you Ernest ! 🙏🏻
When bleeding rack and pinion, jack up front so tyres are free. Now without engine on, turn lock to lock a few times checking fluid level. The rack works this way as a piston pump without air bubbles.
Exactly. Cause my steering pump is the passenger side under the tire. So I have to completely take the tire off and squeeze my arm through the engine area to get to the pump.
Ernest another great video👍 I was hydraulic mechanic for over 35 years. I would run into some really small O rings quad rings ect. Go on to Amazon and order some dental cleaning tools the tools are real small have points on them they're just easy to get in there behind the small o rings and pull them right off . Wouldn't have $20 in a set of them. Keep making videos a good content!
Ernest, people in your service area are very lucky to have a guy like you work on there cars the auto repair business is just full of not honest mechanics or mechanics that do not know what there doing keep up the good work.
I'm reminded of a quote from Fast & Furious 6, said by Owen Shaw: "God, it's amazing. The simplest things can cause the biggest problems. Good news is, if you swap out a bad part, everything runs smooth as silk again." That's what fixing a good car does for me. Good job on that repair! 👍
That was a pretty good repair. some guys think their to good to do this, but the everyday repairs that people are needing is what i like to see. Thanks for the video!😀
I'm sure others have mentioned this already but ONLY Honda power steering fluid in Hondas. Also, that high pressure hose is very common to leak near the crimp. That one looks like it's leaking. The o-ring may have been leaking but when you see fluid all the way up the hose it's not coming from the o-ring. On the lower suction hose, you got it the same way I always get them out. Well done! Another common issue on those is the PS gets weak when the engine is hot, and idling. The steering will get real stiff. A fluid flush and cleaning the reservoir may help. If it doesn't, replace the pump.
Try a couple caps full of brake fluid in the reservoir. This fluid will break down any water in the system. This is an old school trick. Before rack and pinion to remove squealing and other problems with power steering pumps but it still works.
I would like to hear a Honda tech comment on this trick…. Maybe it worked great on 1960s Buick’s but I would only “try”this when a new steering rack is on its way to my house… Because if it doesn’t work, it could be a bad day. Brake fluid absorbs water, but then you have shrek piss brake fluid mixed with ps fluid, not sure how that can be good?
Strongly recommend honda spec power steering fluid. Im super paranoid about fluid specs cause i had a pump eat itself on a friends car that i fixed cause he used the cheap stuff from the parts house.
i like watching mechanic videos to gain more knowledge to do small things to my own cars but i have two say how you save your customers money every chance you get and so super stand up guy in a profession where how much you do directly effects your take home its so nice two see a man caring about people more than money great If I lived anywhere near you you would be my first choice on any repair good job and god bless
Another job well done. A tip on those honda pumps on the Jseries engine. The second connection you took off (the plastic one on the bottom of the pump) usually gets super brittle, so if you run into this again that may be cracked, not a bad gasket
@@Plurmotions For sure Ryan if you're wife finds fluid in hers you're dead LOL, LOL. The nice thing too do is say you bought it for her! just like that Christmas chain saw, LOL.
Those seals are a common issue with Honda's. BTW You're never suppose to use standard power steering fluid in a Honda. Honda power steering fluid only.
yeah. you were the first person to ever tell me that! But not sure if it was leaking anywhere else and lack of fluid caused me to put generic in for now. Next service im going to flush it. :)
I have a smaller Duralast socket set. It's just the 3/8 drive but it's all 6 point sockets. I hate 12 point sockets. The majority of my tools are from Autozone.

I was and still am a fan of German tools, Gedore, Hazett, Stahlwille etc but have taken on Koken too. You are doing a good job and helping out in the community, we are behind you. Transport is so important, especially for shift workers and when that trusted car breaks down its just not good.
Just trying to help . These Honda power steering pumps only like Honda Fluid , or power steering fluid that says Honda compatible fluid . If other fluids are used they will whine and groan but will work . Also these Honda vans and accords are big problems with the high pressure hose , leaking where it has a factory crimp where it mounts on the back of the cylinder head .. they will leak under pressure at full lock
Excellent video, as always. I believe Honda use ATF for power steering fluid. Will that damage the pump or steering wrack if using the clear power steering fluid?
I’ve heard you should use Honda stuff. (It’s pretty much the only vehicle I’ve heard it so consistently about) but since I wasn’t positive it would be all it needed to fix it I just added the bull stuff. We’ll go back later and flush it.
Great video. For the nut driver bits being too long for the space, buy a cheap set and grind down the shaft by about a 3rd. Will help get into the really tight spots
Trick to get those rings out. Buy yourself a really small pair of needle nose pliers or hemo clamps. Then you can just pinch it it'll stretch and you're going to grab it with your hook after
A Ford dealer mechanic with a RUclips channel called Ford Boss Me said the latest small model Ford automobiles have so little room under the hood that they require that the mechanic remove the engine to do things like changing an engine water pump.
Just a little tech tip....when you have o-rings that are hard and stuck in a groove spray them with some brake clean and it will soften and stretch the o-ring and you can pop it right off.
Ernest, turn the steering wheel lock to lock SEVERAL times (wheels off the ground makes this super easy) to purge air from the system BEFORE starting it. Much quieter, and quicker to top off.... Hope this helps ya! (Be careful though, as this will overflow some vehicles, so slow and cautious is the way to go)
What do you like using more and why? The red shop rags or the blue paper towels. I have always used the red shop rags. They just seem to be more of an automotive use. Maybe I'm just old school. Enjoy watching your videos. From the DFW area.
Great work. Just so you know Honda created a second lower hood prop location on that generation oddesy closer towards the windshield on the hood that puts the hood at a higher angle than the one that you used.
Another awesome video. Honda must have loosened up a bit with their pumps and rack and pinon. My 98 civic would whine and screech unless I put Honda brand power steering fluid in it. Even if I used Prestone for Toyota Honda. I see you just put some AutoZone brand in and it worked.
What is your opinion on using the Honda type power steering fluid. I have never been a big fan of the universal power steering fluid on a Honda. Always come back with a noise.and I replace it with the Honda type fluid. And I notice a softer steering.
Harbor freight actually has the box end flex heads. And I think gear wrench makes them as well. I've never had a need for them. But can't you just pull that hose and plug it with a valve stem. And then go and use a swivel socket. Although I can't see what it looks like. Also if you ever run across a jeep Patriot nosie that sounds loud like a bearing but isn't one. It might be the tranny. Try changing the filters and fluid. There is two filters, one in the pan. And one in the sump up under the battery and tray. It looks like a cartridge filter and fairly small. A little car tip.
Honda genuine power steering fluid is way cheaper than anywhere else. I don't know why, usually they're the stealership, but common parts and fluids are very cheap!
I really hope you're using Honda specific power steering fluid because your clients will be calling you in 2 months for a new power steering pump. I highly suggest doing a quick Google search of "Honda specific power steering fluid"....😐
