Anything i cant do myself, repair wise, is usually because of Manufacturer specific tools that are needed. One thing i really hate about my Ford Fiesta, is that i cant reset a lot of the Dash Indicators, because it requires a toggle/dongle that isnt available to 'unauthorized dealers and repair techs'. I can reset my oil change indicator. But when i replaced my fuel pressure sensor, i learned i couldnt reset that alarm in my cars computer, without a special dongle. thankfully my dealership is awesome, and reset it for free.
yeah I bought a Volvo that came with a pile of repair invoices- it had been having heat issues and a Chev dealer charged him $400 to replace the thermostat, I was driving it and it never got warm, pulled the thermostat and found that they had just cut the centre out leaving the ring to hold the gasket, it wouldn't overheat but obviously not good in winter. I wonder what logic that dealer used
You are awesome for helping this girl..hopefully she was grateful for your time and effort.. I stopped helping people because the last time I did repair work on a car to help somebody out I didn’t even get a thank you.. dude at work needed a starter changed in his daughters Honda , bought the starter, wrong one btw, and was complaining how it wasn’t as easy as his old ford van so I offered to help..took the old starter out, drove to store and got the right starter, installed it, fixed a few other pet peeves like cleaning terminals , etc.. dude and his daughter never bothered to say a simple thank you, as I was putting tools away they got in the car and drove off, and even next day it was like I never even helped them..
This is why if you are good at something never do it for free, otherwise it might set a precedent. Happened to me when I fixed a neighbor's computer. No appreciation and she started telling her friends about me. I gave a price to them and suddenly I became public enemy number 1
It is really hard to find honest repair technicians. Going the extra mile for a customer is what true automotive repair is about. Ran into this issue myself with my g35 awhile back. Had overheating and then my coolant reservoir was bubbling like crazy and spilling out. Took into a shop, and had them do a combustion leak test to see if it was a head gasket… they fucking lied and said it was. Figured that out later doing my own combustion leak test. And just going through process of elimination checklist. My car really didnt have any symptoms of blown head gasket.I did further research myself and troubleshooted the issue. Air was in the system. Bled the system and no more issues. Its insane how many people out there are either sloppy mechanics or just flat out greedy scum. There are a lot of "mechanics" out there that basically don't really know what they are doing, at independent shops and dealerships. Most likely they saw the bubbles coming out of the radiator and immediately called a head gasket.

A similar situation: I have a friend who took his car to a shop recently because he was having trouble with it going uphill- it would ping a lot and seem to lose power. The shop told him that the catalytic converters (there are two) were bad and would need to be replaced. He asked my opinion of it, and I asked him what type of fuel he was using. Turns out, since gas is well over $3 a gallon here, he opted to put flex fuel (85 octane) in his car to save money. I told him to never do that again, as his car's fuel system is not set up for that, and to try and offset his mistake with some pricey 93 octane at the pump. Turns out that, a few days later, his car was much more responsive, and I save him at least a grand in repairs.
I borrowed a 2016 Grand Caravan (Flex Fuel-ready) from a friend of mine, the first time I put E85 in it, I had to have it towed home from the gas station (EDIT: refused to start immediately after fill-up) so I could drain the tank; I then advised her to never use E85 no matter what the manual and gas cap say. Which is fine, because she had no idea what E85 is, and it's not for sale at BJ's Wholesale Club where she gets her gas, so it won't be a future problem for her. By 28k she had already gone through three batteries, two oil leaks, seven TPMS sensor failures, and had the head replaced due to damaged valves (thank goodness for factory warranties). The last thing she needs is to tow the dang thing in for service because it is incapable of running on the fuel it is specifically-designed to run on!
Flex fuel is not 85 octane but 85% ethanol and ethanol has a higher octane rating than regular heptane and octane. If a vehicle does not have a flex fuel sensor to see what percentage of ethanol is in the fuel then the ECU will not compensate by adding more fuel as ethanol has less calories per unit volume than regular heptane/octane does. Which means that it has a different AFR value than the regular does. Big turbo tuners use E85 due to the resistance to pinging, it is a cheap alternative to race fuel, but they know to add an additional 15-20% more fuel. So what happened instead was the vehicle was running excessively lean which was heating up the cylinders so much that pinging was occurring due to heat. E85 needs to be run with a flex fuel sensor otherwise not enough fuel will be added which will not work out well when there is a large load, such as going up a hill. Your ends justified the means even though your understand of the means was off.
@@numberpirate Good call. Now that I know this, it's actually worse than I thought! Putting anywhere between 53% and 85% ethanol in a vehicle not designed for it is bad news indeed... I already ridiculed my friend enough about it initially, so hopefully lesson learned on his part. Just to think that his trying to save a few dollars on gasoline could have cost him a few hundred or thousand in repairs had it really done serious damage.
@@gott2641 E85 is used in tuned cars and a number of racing cars (Or just high performance cars) because it has a higher compression rate than gasoline allowing for better performance without the potential for self ignition due to the higher compression and technically the E85 also burns cooler since it is alcohol meaning the tuned high performance engine doesn't run as hot as it would with gasoline also providing less chance for premature self detonation. You average car isn't going to use or even know how to handle E85 as most likely it is going to be engineered to use 87 octane fuel... unless it is something like a mustang, Camaro or even a v8 Cadillac which needs 95 to run properly because of the higher compression it gives the engine.
Bought an old f150 to haul hay and trash, knocking uphill ... changed oil and did what always do and added a can of Restore for compression restore , problem gone. Been using 25 years, any vehicle over 150k i'd use once a year. Compression tests confirm it works.
Appreciate your being honest and telling that customer it was not a blown head gasket. Worked on a few Subarus with that condition (horrendous EJ engine design with a coating that wears off causing coolant and oil to merge and get the "froth/foam" that you describe). Great diagnostic job!
I like to watch some of your vids before I dive into working on one of the family’s cars. (1996 Civic, 2008 Accent, 2010 Grand Caravan)They act as sort of a hype up for me regardless of mission at hand. Recently did some calipers and drum brakes for the first time. Yay me!!! Dig the content Ernest. Cheers from Canada’s beautiful west coast.
Problem number one is she bought a Nissan. When the plants that build these cars can't even put the right lug nuts on them why would anyone buy one. Toyota and Honda are the best, dont settle for less. People think oh yah I look cool in this car, nah you dont, you look like a moron. Like someone who bought a fake diamond ring thinking that they got a good deal because it was half the price of a real one.
To second my comment from the original video, you did cover the basics and obvious causes. But also went the extra mile for someone. That's what makes a good business. She saved the money, spent it and thought she was getting conned again with the head gasket. You saved her a lot of money and a lot of heartache. You sir, are a good man.
I think you did a very good job, not only on the car, but also on the voice-over. Never ceases to amaze me (professional mechanic also) how quickly some (upper echelon) people will say: "Oh, it needs a new engine." I never know if they're trying to scare the customer away for good or trying to bleed them dry.
I used to have a Dodge Spirit and it had a plug on top of the motor. You unscrewed it and the hole allowed the air to escape when you put in the coolant. Once the coolant was in, you screwed the plug back in, no air in the system. They should do this for all engines
Hey Ernest, I’m pretty late but good for you for getting that car fixed for the girl. Give yourself a pat on the back. You should get yourself a vacuum system for filling the coolant, it would probably have saved you a lot of time. My understanding is that on some engines that are hard to bleed the air pocket is on the control side of the thermostat and prevents the thermostat from opening even when the engine is overheating.
One day this man is going to be multimillionaire just because he is so honest and trustworthy that’s the person you want working on your vehicle.. Job well done 👍!!!
@Captain Sandwich - In his line of work it will lead to repeat customers, but how you handle the money you make has more to do with becoming a millionaire than how much you make. A lot of retired pro athletes end up broke even though they made millions in just a few years.
This actually helps a lot, cause i had the same problem in my 2002 gmc envoy and i thought it was a head gasket, but there was not many symptoms of it. I am going to swap the therm and go grab me a wide neck auto bleed funnel. Thanks man!

glad to have you.
Thanks for the update, was really curious about it and also very nice job on the diagnosis.
Wow, that was an awesome fix! Definitely adding that info to my memory banks. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the update. Glad you made it happen to get her car reliable again.
Gr8 job bro. So glad you were able to help this young lady.
God bless!
Great work I like it that you don't give up even when times gets tough .....
Appreciate your being honest and telling that customer it was not a blown head gasket. Worked on a few Subarus with that condition (horrendous EJ engine design with a coating that wears off causing coolant and oil to merge and get the "froth/foam" that you describe). Great diagnostic job!
good job my freind! i know said this before but that funnel system is awesome
Been supporting since your start , keep up the good work 🔥
I like to watch some of your vids before I dive into working on one of the family’s cars.
You are seriously awesome! I wish I lived near you, you’d be my go to. Great video! Thank you for the info.
Why is it that people purchase a used car but expect perfection? All vehicles need something! All vehicles need ongoing repairs from time to time!
It's awesome how honest of a mechanic you are.
My mothers 2010 impala had overheating issues. Changed the temp sensor. Bingo problem solved. I love the quick fixes
Good job helping someone out like this probably made her year for sure .
nice work!
Glad it was just the thermostat! Awesome!
I would really love to see your customer’s reaction when you brought the car back to her, fixed👍
Yeah. It’s hard for me to decide how to do that. I think it wouldn’t capture the reality and end up a bit disingenuous. But she was very grateful.
Really glad to see you fixed that car!
You are awesome man! Respect for your effort, greetings from Greece.
Thank you friend!
Your a good dude Ernest for helping the poor girl out, good on ya bro.Job well done my friend
Keep up the good work you and your family deserve the world 👍🏻
To second my comment from the original video, you did cover the basics and obvious causes.
But also went the extra mile for someone. That's what makes a good business.
She saved the money, spent it and thought she was getting conned again with the head gasket. You saved her a lot of money and a lot of heartache.
You sir, are a good man.
Great job, honest mechanic, honest man!
honest ernest!
Saving the Earth one car at a time😊
Amazing work it's awesome that you and your platform help this lady great job everyone 👍❤.
Thank you!
Hey great job and thanks for being a good mechanic and being a good person.
I think you did a very good job, not only on the car, but also on the voice-over.
Never ceases to amaze me (professional mechanic also) how quickly some (upper echelon) people will say: "Oh, it needs a new engine."
I never know if they're trying to scare the customer away for good or trying to bleed them dry.
I used to have a Dodge Spirit and it had a plug on top of the motor. You unscrewed it and the hole allowed the air to escape when you put in the coolant. Once the coolant was in, you screwed the plug back in, no air in the system. They should do this for all engines
I use gasket glue to stick them into place on the part it makes so much easier.
Coolant vacuum fill tool works great for filling system without any air pockets.
One of the few mechanics that care about the trade not the money
Hey Ernest, I’m pretty late but good for you for getting that car fixed for the girl. Give yourself a pat on the back.
You should get yourself a vacuum system for filling the coolant, it would probably have saved you a lot of time.
My understanding is that on some engines that are hard to bleed the air pocket is on the control side of the thermostat and prevents the thermostat from opening even when the engine is overheating.
Hi appreciate the extra effort you put in to making this video. I can certainly appreciate how easily one little connection mistake can wreak havoc!
Got a new sub! You are a good man and the world needs more like you. Thank you!
Thanks for the sub!
One day this man is going to be multimillionaire just because he is so honest and trustworthy that’s the person you want working on your vehicle.. Job well done 👍!!!
The crooks are always the rich ones..... not the honest ones
@Captain Sandwich - In his line of work it will lead to repeat customers, but how you handle the money you make has more to do with becoming a millionaire than how much you make. A lot of retired pro athletes end up broke even though they made millions in just a few years.
👍’s up for a stand up guy!!👊👊👊
Outstandingly good job brother.
WANTED:
More people like this guy!
From a new subscriber and wannabe amateur mechanic from the UK.
Keep doing your thing, sir! 😁
This actually helps a lot, cause i had the same problem in my 2002 gmc envoy and i thought it was a head gasket, but there was not many symptoms of it. I am going to swap the therm and go grab me a wide neck auto bleed funnel. Thanks man!
You’re a great person and mechanic going out of your way to really help someone who needed your assistance/help, and you proved that not all mechanics are bad.
Keep up the good work and best regards.
Eifion, from the UK😊
Job well done my friend. 👍 Air in the system can be a pain. That bleed funnel is a live saver. Once I got myself one a few years back I'll never do it any other way. Be blessed 👊✌
Good things happen to good people, keep up the good work!
Nice job man wow from bleeding cars 100 of times I have never seen so much air it was basically jumping out lol
