Part 3 - • Monoprice Select Mini ...
Hey Tyler, Just wanted to thank you for making these monopirce mini video's. I have one and also 2 for my kids school it is very helpful to have these videos to tune them. Thank You for your time putting them together!
Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together. Very well done and is greatly appreciated.
updating has become much easier. Great video!
Thanks! Can you either edit the video, or edit your description to mention skipping from x:xx to 7:00 to get to the proper way to do the update? I think that would save the viewer a little bit of time. Just a thought.
Not a bad idea at all Luke. I'll have a go at adding that and try to keep it in mind for future videos as well
woah @Life and Times of Tyler! Thanks for that updating the lcd trick, prior to watching your video, I tried COUNTLESS times by trying to update via the print option.
Thank you for the video. I bought my printer from Amazon 2/15/17 and it had firmware v 24.42, I updated motion to 29, luckily my UI LCD was already at the latest version so far.
Thank You, helped me make sense out of this printer. Old guy that really appreciates Younger knowledgeable men. Never could find instructions on these updates nor very much on using the USB port for running the printer.
Thanks RJ! Trust me, being old or young doesn't matter. I struggled for a year learning how to do all this stuff on my own first printer.
Thanks for the come back Tyler. As I get older I fear time will end before I get all my projects done!
Have been struggling with converting sketchup drawings into G code files that will print. What 3d program do U use? What are you printing on, glass, blue tape, ....? Hope it's okay to pick you knowledge of this device.
I found a IO Gear card reader for $6 at Newegg. Real simple usb the size of a flash drive. Totally plug n play.
Thanks for the videos, looking forward to seeing the rest of the series.
I know the "show more" area has that this firmware update is only for V1 printers and not to do this on a V2. Which both v1 and v2 might not have been released when the video was originally recorded but why not edit the video titles say if the information is for the v1 or v2. Beginners aren't going to be able to ID the machine used in the video as v1 or v2 if they don't know the hotbeds are different between the two especially when both come in white color with the same decals on the front.
hi my printer was fine then I updated everything in this video now my nozzle gets too hot. say I'm trying to print something at 200 degrees it will start heating up then get to 190 and on the screen the temp stays at that but it starts getting even hotter than 200 and melting filament and never starts printing
Your entire series has helped me tremendously - thank you very much for taking the time to do this. I do have a firmware related question? I've tried the TF card method, both from the LCD and the Forced Recovery method - no luck. I've connected my printer to the computer and used Prontoface to do the M560 update (I also tried M997, which I saw online). I've tried holding the printer head and bed and button, tried not holding it. I've also read that sometimes the TF card is an issue so I tried 3 other cards, all different brands and < 4gigs. I formatted them multiple times as FAT, FAT32, full formal, quick format... nothing! The single and only card the printer recognizes is the original card. Oh, Prontoface returned V24.42 from the M115 command. When I did the M560 it said "SerialException: call to ClearCommError failed" and that it did not recognize the command. I've read that it could be a faulty unit?
I bought a "MP Select Mini 3D Printer" from Amazon.
I was trying to print the second object, the printer had started working while, the extruder didn't work.
I took the motor of the extruder out, and tested it is OK. I put it back, it didn't work on the printer again.
So what can I do? Please help me. I just buy it a few day. Thank you all.
Need access to the Google drive says I need approval
Hi i hadn't used my monoprice select mini v1 in months and now my screen is black. I can conect it to the computer and print but i love printing fron sd card. What could it be
I just bought a new-in-box-but previously purchsed mini, my firmware is showing 24.42. I can't find any info to upgrade this, PN is 15365 which it tells me is a V2. Any help?
how do you get the newest version of the firmware because it won't be automatically on your computer
ok i just got my printer and started using it strait out of the box and its been great.
now i want to know how do i connect my 3D printer mostly ehst Tyler has said i dont get it i need help please i been at it for 3 days
Thanks for putting up this guide have you had a chance to update the firmware lately ? I just picked up a V1 doing the black Friday sale and am having a hard time with updating the firmware .Thanks for the help.
Quick question. When I insert my sd card it tells me to format it. This means I will lose all my files on the card. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
any chance this will hurt my printer if it doesn't work right?
Do I want to have the latest versions of the Motion and UI? I can connect with WIN 10 but every print I send fails.
Quick question for you, I just bought a Malyan M200 3D printer from HobbyKing which looks to be the exact same printer. I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can use the firmware update for the Monoprice Mini on the Malyan printer?
Did you ever find out?
updating firmware void the warranty. and monoprice told me they can't help me with anything cos I did that
+ahmed youssef I don't know who told you this, but upgrading the firmware does not void the warranty.
So, you want to update a firmware before even checking what firmware came loaded .... ? I am no pro but that doesn't make much sense. I would suck if somebody flashed and OLDER version to their printer because they did not perform a simple check. Firmware version displays as soon at the printer is powered on. Besides, installing a non supported 3rd party firmware has the potential to void the warranty. I (and many others) are grateful for your time and explanation of this cool little printer. Thank you Tyler. But, I can't help but feel this is not the best information to provide people, especially as a first start/set-up guide. Respectfully, Skip.
can i please get the firmware? thanks
plz help I cant use the micro sd because I don't have a port for it
You'll need to buy an SD to USB adapter. They are super cheap on amazon/ebay
my LED wont light up on the printer
The Firmware Update is now locked. Is there another link for downloading the Firmware?
i cant find the firmware update in google drive
I have been trying to get the files all evening. The files give you a url and it just puts you back in the first place clicking on download files, One big loop and you get nothing. Anyone know where to get the files? I heard they were locked some how so we cannot update?
Yep. The links take you into a loop. I did a separate search for "Monoprice Select Mini V1 firmware" and got the files elsewhere. Don't remember where I got them but it was fast.
Hi Tyler
Ive just got the MP select mini V2, Is the firmware for the V2 the same as the V1? if it is different, where do i find the V2 software?
I don't see a v2 firmware, but the one on the one I just got shows *V30.50b* so maybe we already have the latest for the V2?
+Mentaux1 yes no need to update firmware on new V1s or on the V2
What is a good way to indicate whether you have the V1 or V2 version. It didn't say when I bought it from amazon. It just says the model number and color 121711 - Black
Black is version two. V1 was Only released in white.
I got the latest versions from the Google share drive. motion V29, UI V42. I put both files on the micro SD and ran the "update" file. I cycled the power just to see if it took and it came up 29.42. Has there been something new in the firmware that updates both files, or do I need to do the UI separate? Thanks for the vids. Very helpful.
Do you know what versions were installed prior to the update?
If you received your printer between about the 5 - 7 months ago your printer more than likely shipped with versions '24.39'. If you received it within the last 0-5 months, it probably shipped with version '24.42'. I am guessing you received the printer with versions '24.42', which would explain why '42' was displayed.
To answer your question, there is no method to update the Motion Controller and the UI Controller firmware simultaneously. You are running the most recent versions of each firmware that is currently available for download.
DO NOT TUST THIS VIDEO!! IT IS OUT OF DATE AND ITS PROCESS WILL BRICK YOUR PRINTER!
on a v2?
I am new to 3d printing and decided to try this printer. I recieved it last night and tried updating it like you said but with the newest files. It seemed to say updating on the screen for 5 minutes straight so being impatient I turned the unit off and then on and since then It doesnt work. I can go through the menus but I can't move any of the axis or extruder and it just says loading when I go to print. Is there any way to fix this? I tried recovery and that doesnt work
You need to do a recovery firmware install. I had the same happen to me as well. Copy all the contents on your SD card off to a folder on your computer, then format it with FAT32. I would not use the newest files. Use the versions I mention in the video and in my blog post. People have had issues occasionally with the latest firmware revisions.
Do the motion controller first. Make sure none of the axes are resting on their home switches (you may need to slowly move the x and y axis a small amount to move them off the limit switches) and follow the recovery firmware process in the video and google drive doc.
Life and Times of Tyler thanks
+CHEP 3D Printing completely agree. It seems like most new printers are shipping with versions that don't need updating at all.
Hi do you have any firmware update for the mp delta mini
Is there a new driver for this printer? I tried to load it and it comes back as incompatible with AMD 64.
Nevermind, I went to the manufacturer's site and downloaded ch341ser.exe (the latest USB driver). It loaded flawlessly and I am a happy camper.
Mini base method? Recovery method?
Just ordered one of these the other day- On the firmware updates are those available from Monoprice or only the google drive downloads? Also is it necessary to perform these updates on a new printer that I will receive tomorrow.
+John Grissom as long as your firmware is 22.41 or above there's no need to update it :)
Life and Times of Tyler thank you for the heads up great set of videos here. I'll check it out once it arrives, probably worth the update anyway I am guessing. Did you notice a better quality job with the newer firmware? Thanks again
Looks like mine is 24.42 do you think it would be good to update the Firmware and LCD? This is my first printer ever so just trying to learn about them.
can someone help, im new to the 3d print scene and have been folowing this tutorial smoothly but after i updated my printer, the screen colors are all inverted and weird looking and now it prints funny, also it does nt print in the center like i see everyone elses it prints on the home axis so it cuts off my prints by running to close to the edges any help or suggestions someone can direct me in? how do i go back to reverting my printer to original firmware before it went all hey wire? is it even possible to downgrade it back?
also i went and was able to edit the start and end gcode in pronterface once but for some reason i cant get my computer to connect to my printer anymore? is that because of the update or maybe bad usb port on my printer
also one last thing i keep hearing about a courupt lcd fix you can do i was hoping that was my issue and that would fix all these print problems and weird colors, but after i connected my printer to my wifi and uploaded the ui.bin file my computer says it sent it but i notice no change on my printer
part two is killing me....just edit it at 7min in and kill the start i followed your directions to a T and now my printer is not cool at all.
Hi Tyler. Please could you advise me. I'm having problems with printing gears that are designed to fit together precisely, it appears the parts are coming out slightly too big such that nothing seems to fit. Do you know if this fine tuning I need is a firmware issue or a slicer issue? Either way do you have recommendations? I use Cura 2.4 for slicing and currently when I switch the printer on it says v22.42. It's technically an M200 direct from Malyan . The weird and annoying thing is that I just tried the steps in this video again to update with the both motion and lcd bin files but the startup version still says v22.42 like it's not updating the motion firmware. And now I guess I've lost the alterations I made through Pronterface following your next video. Any suggestions? Please help.
No need to update beyond 22.42. This is almost always a slicer settings issue. Do you have calipers to measure how "off" your parts are? Usually this is because your filament diameter isn't actually quite 1.75, and your extrusion rate isn't exactly as in firmware.
Lowering the extrusion multiplier from 1 to .95 will almost always take care of snap-fit levels of precision. That will typically get you about .1mm of clearance on perimeters. Anything beyond that, lowering extrusion will not help further and you'll need to go about calibrating the extruder and updating the steps/mm in firmware.
thanks for the reply. what does it mean to lower the extrusion multiplier from 1 to 0.95? is this somewhere in cura? or is it some gcode I have to write to the printer's firmware? x
It's in Cura, and is explained in my blog post :)
Hi again. Sorry, I can't find any mention in your blog post about where to set the extrusion multiplier from 1 to 0.95. I'm assuming you meant www.thetylergibson.com/monoprice-select-mini-part-3-tuning-and-slicing/ and not the blog post related to this video. ( Thanks for getting it back online ) Either way I'm not sure what this is or where to set this in Cura. Are you talking about setting layer height to a multiple of .04375? or do you mean the flow percentage? Or is there something I'm missing?
My apologies, in Cura the setting is called Flow - ultimaker.com/en/resources/20417-material - reducing it to 95-97% can help with making fine adjustments to over extrusion.
All this tutorials is the same for Malyan m200 ?
Very very similar. Malyan site might be good to refer to as you watch these videos. They make these machine.
Sorry, they are the direct retailer of these machines to most of the world. Not the manufacture.
This has wifi, can't you do the update via wifi?
+Jason Baker technically yes, but if you have a firmware revision with wifi enabled, you don't need to update the firmware :)
Thanks! I just got my Wifi enabled and connected, but for some reason when I send a print, it says failed. Any suggestions?
WHAT ABOUT V3
I need to go get a micro sd card reader I assume , printer will be here monday
Please don't update the firmware right away, especially if the printer has the new UI. Newer UI Controller version number examples "106.##", "110.##", "113.##"
The newer V2 shouldn't allow the installation of older Motion Controller firmware. Newer Motion Controller firmware is 34 & higher.
Please heed the warnings at:
mpselectmini.com/ui_controller
&
mpselectmini.com/motion_controller
I have the same big ugly warning message on the top of each firmware update instruction page for about the last month but it is sometimes ignored or not seen until after the users have updated their firmware without reading the instructions and warning on the reside in the same folder as the firmware download.
If you visit the Google Drive link from the description please view the warning image and read the text file(s) before proceeding with any firmware updates. Updating the UI firmware will likely make your display black and non-working. The black screen is fixable but should never have happened in the first place
In the last 5 or 6 weeks, I have helped more than 20 people recover the use of their displays after they "downgraded" their brand-new printer that shipped with the latest available firmware. I say "downgraded" because they have for whatever reason decided that the UI firmware installed on their printer that has an obviously higher version number is older than the versions with a lower version number that were released over 10 months ago.
I don't mind helping people fix their display but is just silly that this many people have fallen victim to something that is easily avoid had they taken the time to read.
I'm not gonna change the firmware, thanks for the reply
hey matt I bought my Mini and it has an older V24.42 I am thinking that is pretty bad. plus I tried to get wifi on there and it connects and created an i.p. address but every attempt at uploading and printing is a Fail. what should I do. I looked at your mpselectmini wiki and tried downloading the firmware but you have removed it for now. any way you would send me the correct link? I have joined your facebook page. thanks for your help and for the great wiki!! =D
+Matthew Carrell You have the latest UI firmware available for your printer.
This morning I opened the V1 Motion Controller firmware folder for everyone since the majority of the problems were with the UI Controller firmware. If you need the UI Controller firmware please let me know.
Try command "M563 S6" to make uploads faster and more stable.
S value can be 2-6. The default value is S3
mpselectmini.com/extended_g-code_table#m563_-_enable_faster_wifi_file_uploads
You can send this command using the web browsers URL bar
PRINTERS_IP_ADDRESS/set?code=M563 S6
Examples:
10.10.100.4/set?code=M563 S6
192.168.20.108/set?code=M563 S6
This setting doesn't persist after the printer has been powered off, i.e., M563 S6 must be sent at least once after turning the printer on.
The M563 S6 command should increase the upload speed which should also decrease failed uploads.
While running test I have uploaded 60MB files. I can consistently upload 20MB files in 4 minutes 3 seconds. Not really fast but good enough for me.
thanks a lot !! you're amazing :3
Do not update your V2 firmware at this time. The update is for V1 firmware.
IS this being on mac or PC
+Lorri Carnevale all the software I mentioned in the video is available for both Mac and PC
Can I use my one photo etc to print
+Lorri Carnevale you should join the MP Mini Facebook group and see the lithopanes that other people have printed
Thank you do very much I was just told I could use it but would have to do things I don't even understand lol but if this printer can reproduce photos from my library in sold
"AND IT COULD BRICK" ... i guess that means 'break'?
"brick"=useless, like a brick
Yup. Brick. mpselectmini.com/firmware/motion_controller
Who is watching in 2021 lol
