This was a park like no other. Remember riding the camels, elephants, and the whale and dolphin shows. Was a great learning experience for kids! Thank you for sharing this video.
John Folena your welcome! Glad it brings you back. There certainly isn’t a whole lot out there about how this place once was and I’m happy to have something of what once was.
Glad it brought you back some memories and hopefully all great memories. Was fortunate enough to have this recorded off of TV via my dad and have a record of what it was before the rebranding.
Thank you for posting this video. My mom used to work there in Gentle Jungle in the early 90s, before my dad was transferred when Mare Island was shutting down. I have a lot of memories of there including visiting Ron's land and seeing his large cats. (THE SOUND!) I recognized a few faces from photos my mom has. My mom also has photos of her with whales, lions and tigers, the camels and many other animals. I think it was her favorite place to work ever. (I even enjoyed the commercials. I actually remember some of these!)
My dad worked at Mare Island. I used to go to to the park when I was little. I don't remember much of it. We moved to Oregon in 1989. I was 6. I came to watch this video to see if I remembered any of it.
I remember watching this when I was a kid. Brought back a lot of memories. I visited the park a handful of times and I loved it there. Thank you for posting!
Was lucky to grown up with this in our back yard. From the time it was on Redwood City and they came to our school with the animals to growing up and taking my own kids to the park. I am glad i got to go before i changed over to six flags. My all time favorite thing i ever did was getting to pet a baby tigger Samson. He later grew up and i dont know what ever happened to him. But always LOVED that tigger and Tasha the Snow leopard.
Thank you for this great upload! The video quality is amazing, despite the VHS capture! I was curious to know if you know if Mike Demetrios had any involvement, after Six Flags bought the park? I just went to Discovery Kingdom for the first time and it's a pretty great park! I like to think that Mike would be happy with its current state. The rides haven't taken over the park and the animal enclosures are quite nice, compared to many zoos that I've seen.
Would anyone like it if someone could revamp Marine World Africa USA? If so, just like in the past, the entire park will be themed around the animals that are found in the park. The park will include 18 animal attractions, 14 thrill rides including several roller coasters, a kid's playground, a monorail which will take visitors around the park, a carousel, an indoor arcade, and an indoor waterpark. This park will be split in three different realms: Terrestrial Treasures, which will be themed around land animals; Marine Marvels, which will be themed around sea animals; and Winged Wonders, which will be themed around birds and butterflies. Instead of just being open during the summer months, the park would be open year-round; but the thrill rides would not be open during the winter months.

Great video and history. I worked there 1990-1992 as Executive Director of the Marine World Foundation…a trip.

They didn't really destroy that they mainly builded rides on the front and middle of it The animals are currently still there

I worked here in highschool.. 92'.
Very sentimental.
Oh my goodness, it's Popeye and Turkey!
The original park location in Redwood Shores CA is what use to be the main headquarters for the Oracle corporation.
