Simple and common sense. Nive video. I am ADD and tend to plan more work than I follow through because when I see a jpob to do, I think about what a pain it will be and such. Watching you do it makes me much more inclined to attack such things. For some reason since I always used push or walk behind mowers these things are new and I overestimate the job difficulty. Except for changing the drive belt on y la145 !

What I have noticed through the years is that the majority of problems caused with tractors is the fault of the owners..for example I have seen many times people bring home brand new tractors and what do they do start it up full bore and go no break in time or warm up time and this is the cause of a lot of engine failures same with the transmission they start beating the hell out of it straight out of the crate..also never change out break in oil all they do is continue to add on top of it

Perfect solution ! I had to use a lot of heat and patience, but the steps covered in the video covered everything. I can relate to the pause's in the video....haha. My pauses were 3 cigarettes worth of time (30 minutes). Again patience, slowly but surely they loosened up, moving it back and fourth, I think it was like 4 heat up cycles. But when you can work it by hand your minutes away. I follow the blessed JD maintenance schedule for the 14 years(1200 hours), Now I am going to add this to my over the winter end of season. Thanks again !

At some point, I lost the plastic spindle cover and due to being stored outside, water got in there and rusted it. Anyway, with a lot of spray lubricant and elbow grease, I finally got it out, removed all the rust, greased and reassembled it. Unbelievable! It steers like a brand new one. Thanks!

Great video. I watched this in anticipation of me performing some repairs on my D140. It was very hard to steer, and I wanted to knock all the grass off the under carriage before I took the mower deck off by using my power washer. Oddly enough, after knocking off about 20 pounds of old dry grass, the mower became easier to steer and I can only conclude that grass can build up and clog up the steering mechanism. I still am going to do the steering arm clean out as that has to be a factor, if not today than in the near future. But this was a really great video.

My former neighbors had sold their property and I was working on a push mower one day in which my neighbor had stopped by and asked me if I would be interested in a MTD YardMachine garden tractor that he thought that the steering was going out on.
So naturally I said “Yes” and he drove the tractor over to my driveway a little while later in which I noticed that he wasn’t moving the steering wheel very much -,So I knew that the steering wasn’t abnormally loose.
After my neighbor had went back home, I jump started the MTD and decided to go for a test drive to scope out the problem. Much like the John Deere in your video, The steering spindles had not seen any grease for a very long time. While I was driving, I made a point to work the wheels back and forth while stopping and shooting grease into the spindles every so often. The inside of the tractor around where the VariDrive and the idler pulleys was totally packed with grass clippings and residual crud that I had to dig out somewhat before I could blow the loose stuff out with compressed air.
The air filter looked even worse being packed with dirt. After some much needed routine maintenance, The MTD turned out to be a pretty nice tractor. The mower blades on the 46 inch deck had been ruined by someone who tried to sharpen the mower blades like a steak knife, So I just ordered a new set of blades. Supposedly this tractor was being serviced by a mobile mechanic - I was not very impressed with what I had to undo from what they probably charged an exorbitant price to the previous owner who was in bad health from what my neighbor had told me some time afterwards.

@@RaleysSmallEngines I also have some John Deere garden and lawn tractors in my collection of equipment. The 165 hydro that I have gets the steering spindles greased on a regular basis. For Me, I am a recent retired welder within a state government transportation cabinet equipment repair facility here in KY. I just replace the spindles on an L1 30. The wiring on the axle in the wheel cars does the wheels to wobble back-and-forth and pop study clip off. They’ve put bearings on the newer ones instead of those bushings but once that shaft is worn down enough I couldn’t keep wheels on it at all we were just wobble so I decided pop the clip and I usually ended up losing a washer and an eclip in the process. Finally I just replace them. Some people sell a little needle bearing kit to help the top steer but mine works for a good 18 years. But I was able to fix the shaft like in this video Henri little bit but the wheel was a big problem. I hammered mine instead of heating it. Lol. I guess next time I’ll put a heat gun on there and see if it makes a difference. I’m replacing the steering gears also because the opinion is pretty worn and the other teeth are a little pointy and since it’s 18 years old I think I’ll do the drive belt and idler pulleys up in there because the PTO clutch doesn’t appear to be moving. lol. I also had to rebuild the carb and replace the fuel pump so at this point I’ve got almost everything replaced. I know they’re not perfect but I kind of like these old mowers, they’re just pretty easy to deal with and they made everything pretty simple. Well simple after I watch your videos anyway. 😂

I would not have believed that those kingpins could get that seized up. 1 year later! Grease fittings should be on both sides of the wheel. Gotta fix the flat first!

I have been a small engine tech for years and I can honestly say I have never seen this problem before thanks for the video

I called the local John Deere dealer and the service department didn't even suggest this. The thought it must be the steering gears.

@@deplorableseniorchief5988 They wouldn't do such repair work anyway - so their techs are probably not taught about it. The dealer would replace both assemblies and the steering gears - and most likely bill the customer $500+ for the 30 minutes it took to do so.

My 110 spindle rods have a small opening at the bottom to let the grease fall out lol. First I thought the just didnt weld the shaft all the way around. Nope, by design. The grease is already gonna ooze out the bottom natural, the did this so it goes dry faster.

Very nice work Sir. What would you charge for a repair like that? I'm curious as to the cost of a repair versus getting a new motor since a mower in that condition is probably going to need more work to it if it was never maintained over the course of its life.

heres a tip to make it steer a little easier , at the bottom of the spindle use 2 stainless steal washers with a needle bearing between the 2 washers .

Saw one Mech add bearing under the shaft. When he got through you could turn the wheel with one finger.

Yes sir, I've seen that also. Yes it works great. We didn't do that on this one because the machine has been neglected for so long. Since the recording of the video the mower is now trashed. They never did ANY maintenance on it. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend

Great video T-Bone. Now I know how to fix an axle full of boogers! But what about a half flat tire…? Lol

  • @stevehood7151
    @stevehood7151 Год назад +1

Good video, my only thing is you should painted the axle after heating. But seeing the condition of the machine probably not a big deal.

Time to fix that oil leak or get it weighed! Hard to believe they were in there that tightl Support the axle and try Impact Gun

Cool repair, but if you want to really free up and ease up on your steering?? Go on RUclips and look up “poor man’s power steering for a riding mower”. You install machined flat washers and roller bearings into the steering spindles and what a difference that makes.

Sir, I have a d125 and its really hard to steer also to the point where its actually wearing the teeth on the steering spline. I took linkage off both sides and both move very easy. so now I guess its in that steering spline area. any ideas? I purchased this mower off a guy that didnt clean it muych, Got the deck all cleaned and working and the only issue is the steering. Its in very good condition other than that. Everything else works.

I have a John deere stx38 and I wish I could remove my front spindles on it but they are welded from the factory. I could cut them off and reeled them but it's not worth all that. I think I'll just try and shoot more grease in it. I've already greased it once last week but It didn't seem like it was taking grease at all. I don't know
