You saved me Taryl! All the info you provide is spot on and tipping the chassis to vertical position is genius. I’m almost 70 yo and flexible as a potato chip.
Taryl, Your video repair instructions, complete with part numbers are the absolute best. Ace mechanic. I now feel confident in doing this steering gear slop repair. Thank you!
This is exactly what I needed to see, especially where the shim washers go. I couldn't remember if they were on the nut or the bolt side. Nice step-by-step demonstration. Thanks!
This has to be one of my favorite goto videos, I must have watched this a dozen times:) I loved foggy helping out! IMHO to make it easier to align the sector gear if you notice a small hole between the two bolts that mount the sector gear, that is there to center align the sector gear, I believe it takes a 3/8” drill or dowel through the hole to align it and hold it centered, it’s been awhile since I did it so it might be a bigger size:) Then you won’t have to count the teeth and you wont have to worry about the sector gear turning when installing the steering wheel and steering gear. It also helps when adjusting the toe.
Thanks for the amusing and helpful video. I found that tipping my tractor (L120) with the engine on its rear was not feasible (as he says it heavy) and my hands are to big to get where they need to be. I addressed these issues by 1) driving the front wheels onto the ramps I use for my car, and 2) removing the plate that holds the sector gear. The sector gear is attached by 4 bolts (10 mm) that are easy to get at and are screwed into the frame (no nut to hold with a second wrench). The plate won't come all the way off because of all of the other stuff in the way, but it did get me a couple more inches so it was then easy to get a wrench on the bolts holding the sector gear.
My John Deere D130 lawn tractor has so much play in the steering sector gear - I'm going to install extra shim washers just like you demonstrated here. I have new bushings, sector gear and pinion gear but need to get some stainless steel washers like you have. Thank you for posting this video.
Great video, Taryl. The next time I change a sector gear I will definitely shim it! I'll bet all that play was what caused the gears to wear out. Thanks!
I have an LA105 that repeatedly strips pinion gears. I’m going to finally shim it up like this. I bet tightening it up will help, I have a ton of play currently.
Fantastic video, thank you very much - made the job easy and saved a lot of bad language. I'll be checking out your other videos. Keep up the good work.
Great video! I see you have the adjustable end bolted to the sector gear the way it is on my mower. Another video shows the adjustable end bolted to the spindle. Does it make a difference?
Wow! Will you come do mine?!?! Very nice work. I wondered about how many mil that first piece of steel was (thinking it looked too thin) then you redid it with some nice thick 1/4”. Dang. I wish they would’ve done this at the factory. Just replaced my front tires because of really uneven wear. If I could weld it would’ve been the perfect time to do this.
That dang Gordy must be related to Ronny. They are a slimy pair. I can't figure out why Hollywood hasn't nominated you for an Oscar. Your videos are the best. Thanks.
My old Crapsman LT steering shaft was not tight as well. I added a.large 1/16 washer without knowing about this option, and it got rid of the slop. Thanks.
Good video guys. I have a cub cadet lt1045 when I go in reverse the tires turn in towards each other. The steering is similar to that JD . Think I'm going to replace all that on it. Thanks for the videos
Hahahahahaha another great video !!! I just purchased a JD 111 mower, and the steering is hard as a rock !!! Guess what I will be doing this weekend !!! Buddyboy
TARYL: I absolutely love your channel... great tips, and KEEP THE HUMOR COMING!!! A small note, at least on my John Deere LA 175 - I had the left tie rod connector (the part underneath the mower) break off, and had to purchase the whole unit. The JD shop in McKinney, Texas did me good, a shout out to them! They had the part, and he let me have it cheaper than it would have cost to buy through Amazon and then pay for 3 day shipping. Anyway, to the note here: the bolt on the inside for the tie rod end is 17 mm not 15 mm as stated in the video, at least for my model. The other size, 13mm is spot-on. Again, love your channel, and keep 'em coming!!
Very informative. It makes these jobs much easier when you see someone else do it, before you tackle it. I need to do this job on my 2004 Husqvarna 2548, the steering is very sloppy. I assume it will be very similar. They tell you to grease these gears, but I'm starting to wonder if that is a good idea. My property in NC is very sandy. Do you put grease on them? Thanks.
i did a simple job on my 2008 mtd the steering was sloppy as hell come to find out all the bolts were lose so i think someone did work to it but i fixed it
@@SORGIGERMANICO Same here, on my LA125, I'm looking up from underneath and I see whole dash moving when I turn steering wheel, both small bolts are loose, when I take it apart, I will see if I can put a lock washer on each. I'm going to modify top chinsy broken bushing with one of the old big bottom bushings like I saw in another video. I was going to replace top small bushing with a new, my Ace store doesn't even show it on diagram. Really??
@@turdsandwicher If gear is worn out, it takes no time to pop it off and replace it, then add some bearing or lithium grease, shouldn't have metal to metal mating not lubed, my opinion.
Help! La135 - replacing drive belt, removing pinion, unable to remove the pinion steering gear. It’s stuck on, 3 days of pb blaster. Still won’t budge. Thought about going to get propane torch to heat and try again. Suggestions please. Thanks
18:31 I realize he said its a junk tractor but for anyone who is fixing their steering like in this video use something like a socket to evenly tap the gear into place.
Taryl. I played the American booger pickers episode for my eight year old granddaughter. Now everytime she hears your intro music she asks if I'm watching American booger pickers. Just can't convince her it's called Taryl fixes all.
If I do stand the mower up on the back end to do this job. Would it be advisable to let it sit on it's wheels for a few days when I'm done to let the oil drain back down before trying to start the motor?
You should do more Gordy videos where he shows how NOT to fix things the right way and we can see more of how his crooked business works. Might be educational to people that get ripped. Thumbs up buddy!
Yeah. I replaced mine over the winter when I was doing some other things on my 12 year old mower. I didn't grease the teeth since I believe it just attracts a lot of dirt/grit. That's a low friction point and don't believe it really needs it. My original one lasted 12 years and that's good enough for me.
Mr Taryl i got one question I got me a 1979 allis chalmers 712h. My question is how low can i set the idle, so i can let it idle for awhile with out risking damage to the k301 kohler?
Just did this to mine! the gear was so rusted on there that i had to use a crowbar to knock it off. Also, i find it was easier to drop the plate that holds sector gear is mounted to
Taryl, as one small engine mechanic to another, could you give me an idea of how the shifter torison spring is supposed to fit on the shifter lever. I have one to repair and the spring was broken off course and I’d like to know how this spring fits on the lever. I’ve tried diagrams etc but to no avail on how follow any clear diagram.
Tarly, good job on video, but my LA145 the steering shaft is worn on the top bushing, squeaking, No one ever mentions this bushing, how do I fix that bushing,
Hey there, I have a makita chainsaw moddle: dcs110th and the throttle sticks when i tap it. the only way i can stop it is when i hold it wide open for a lil bit or hit the back of the handle need help plz!
I bought a steering replacement kit for a John Deere 140 D lawn tractor and installed it. The problem I'm having is my tractor use to turn very sharply to the left ( non discharge side ) to mow around obstacles. After I installed the kit I've lost the tighter turning radius ability on my tractor and have to make 4 point turns around raised tree rings in my yard. Can any one tell me what I did wrong .
Does anyone know where I can order these shims that are used in this video? I have looked all over eBay and can’t find the exact dimensions. Not sure if I’m wording the search right or what, but if anyone can provide a link, I would REALLY appreciate it! Thank you for your time!!
Taryl I Have a Craftman Rotor Tiller With a 208cc OHV Briggs . When I go to pull it to start the motor it want's to pull back and just about jerk my arm off . I think it is the valve adjustment but I can't find what to set them on the book does not show the settings . Can you help me. Thanks.
If you don't have a hydrostatic transmission its easier to pull the gear off the steering shaft and the the 4 10mm bolts holding the plate with the sector gear off and take it out of the unit.
Hey Taryl thanks for all your efforts today! I was wondering if you sold winter tuque for us Canadians, didn't see any on big cartel and I thought I seen you wearing one in one of your videos.
I just fixed my steering on my John Deere. I had the metal bushings. They tried to sell me the plastic ones. I mic’d them. The metal was same as plastic new one. So, I kept the metals ones. Should I have replaced with plastic ones. Figured metal last longer than plastic. Even the mechanic they had. Had never seen metal bushings. Thanks
I had the exact same things go wrong with my weed wacker Muffcan Bearings, Bleeder assemble and that damn Calculator Belt. He got off easy cost me 165.00. Should have just bought a new Wacker
