That thinking outside the shop comment is so true. There was a guy in one of your recent videos that was very upset you used a set screw to secure a valve guide. Even though it works and saves money it's just not right to do apparently. Even NASA would tell him it's just a lawnmower, put away your torque wrench.
I was doing an engine rebuild for my pulley swapped backyard play mower. The head ports were good awful , but I had to keep telling myself its a mower , not a race car. I like precision and all that, but there's a time and a place for it
I have been working on mowers for 60 years and have never put a torque wrench to anything on a mower . never .I only use a torque wrench on car heads and things like that.I have rebuilt many mower engines and never used a torque wrench. @@nybergsgarage thats true but the issue is when people apply that type of autism to mowers where it isnt the case. Taryl's work is safe and effective but that is lost on some people around here. Kinda adds to the entertainment though, love when he busts their balls
Yeah. Glad you came up with this. My bushings will need replacing one day, and I'll remember this one. Great idea since it does eliminate replacing the spindles because the needle bearings ride on the surface of the spindle where bushings have not ridden. I guess the best way is for someone to come up with grease seals on each side of the wheel to keep grit out, but haven't seen that remedy as yet.
Right on Taryl! I've always used material handling equipment bearings and bushinging. Never used oem. M&H parts built for higher load limits and extreme temps.
Thanks for making these videos informative and very funny. "These aren't free range bearings, they're caged bearings." 😂 Hilarious and it works as a mnemonic device to help me remember what they’re called because I had no idea those existed until today.
Hey Taryl, It would be great if you can link up those bits for the bearing upgrade as it's really time consuming to trudge through the website looking for a needle in a hay stack. Is it possible to throw the links up next time please ??
I've installed brass bushings many years ago on the "test subject" riding mower. Still going strong while, my other mower needs constant " up-keeping ". All in the name of small engine projects.
I got a backyard play toy, I was killing bushings but I upgraded to toro wheels with a 1.75 od bearing vs the 1 3/8 standard stuff. And you can find good bearings for em.
I worked for mack trucks 20years then Chevrolet for 20 years the mack guys could fix anything like you the chevy guys only could replace parts ypou are old school and that's great, good man .I am retired now if I was close to you I would be a shop pest .
Still looked sloppy at 15:17. I redrilled the rims and put the valve on the same side as the zerk fitting. Those look like they will prevent further wear of the spindle. Does the cage bearing actually ride on the good center portion of the spindle or just act as a spacer?
I was wondering that too, if the cage bearing was merely a spacer. My rims' center is raised higher than the bushing 'knocks' so the caged bearing would only be a soacer
It is just a lawn mower, so some slop isn't going to run you into the ditch at 60mph. I do not really see the advantage of installing the caged bearing however. If you go to a bearing shop(industrial supplier), you can give them the shaft size, the bore size and ask for a sealed flange bearing and they will find one. I spun a trailer bearing in the hub, and found out one can get 0.001 , 0.002" oversize bearing race. Still using the same hub for the past ten years.
@@ThisOldMan-ya472 That works great if the spindle is not damaged like this one was. It likely could be bronzed on the underside, filed smooth and then sealed bearings. New Spindles and sealed Bearings please.
@@gordbaker896 I saw the spindle damage, and a end bearings would work fine on that shaft. If need be, just tap a cotter pin in there as a shim, as it is soft metal.

Hey what about cub cadet slt1550 trying to find out what size bearings to order now the axle is according to specs. 750 Dia. So the front rim should be 1.000 id don't want to order the wrong size
@tarylfixesall 1) How important is it that the cage bearing fits the length of the hub and width of the cylinder snugly? In other words, if the length is a little short or maybe the OD is a little less, will this still work and 2) would you do it that way or not? I am considering adapting this idea to a 1995 Exmark Viking 48" (front spindle wheels).
I'm not so sure this is an upgrade. I just ordered a spindle/bearing kit for my LA145. Thinking about the bearings though, if they don't last the life of the mower, when they fail they will fail catastrophically whereas the OEM bushing will be subject to "graceful degradation" and not leave me stranded in the middle of the yard with crunchy bearings. When I receive my kit, I'll purchase bushings to replace the bearings.
