- A playthrough of Taito's 1991 license-based platformer for the NES, The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy.
Though they had a few misses, Taito's NES output was generally excellent. Their games often boasted some of the best graphics and sound on the system, the gameplay was usually rock solid, and much like Capcom, Konami, or Sunsoft, they didn't lower their standards a bit when they were handling someone else's IP. Their Hanna Barbera titles all scream quality, and though they're not particularly popular, they're arguably on par with Capcom's Disney titles.
The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy was the first of these games. It came out during the 1991 holiday season, and it met with a warm critical reception, even receiving a full-blown feature in Nintendo Power.
It's better known these days as "7 Grand Dad."
Sigh. The internet.
The game is a simple platformer that has you playing as Fred, the world's favorite prehistoric drunk, day laborer, and buffoon. An evil scientist from the 30th century has not only stolen the Flintstones' and Rubbles' pets, but has also destroyed Gazoo's time machine to prevent any heroic rescue attempts.
Gazoo says that he can fix the time machine, but he'll need Fred to collect the scattered parts. Once that's all set, Fred will be able warp to the thirtieth century in order to throw down with Dr. Butler and save his slobbery purple pal.
Fortunately, Fred is unexpectedly adept at platforming. He can dangle from and climb up ledges, collect subweapons, and power up his club for a super smash. He can fly, dive, hop around on a dino kangaroo, and even take a break to win extra lives playing basketball. Quite multitalented, he is.
The controls are tight and Fred moves with a nice sense of weight (though you have to watch out when he skids to a stop, especially on ice!), and the level layouts are thoughtfully designed. They clearly guide you while giving you just enough freedom to explore a bit, and they're full of tricky spots that can easily wipe you out if you're trying to rush through. It's a cartoon game, but it is challenging. The game is fair, though. It doesn't blitz you with unavoidable hits, but some of those bosses are merciless until you've had a bit of practice and learned their patterns.
The graphics are all true to the look of the TV show with bold lines and super vivid colors, and all of the individual details, from the animation to the enemy designs to the background objects, work together to stay true to the spirit of the show. It's a very good looking NES game and its refreshingly respectful of its source material.
The music is excellent, too. In addition to the fun rendition of the show's theme, there's a whole slew of obnoxiously catchy original tunes to keep you humming for days after.
Especially that ice stage theme! It reminds me so much of the music from Little Nemo and Chip n Dale. I love it.
If you haven't played it but you like a good platformer, this is one damned fine game. Go for it!

I'm honestly convinced someone went back in time and made sure there was exactly enough space for Joel to say "GRAND DAD" before the Flintstones theme kicked in.
FLEENSTONES?

It might be better known these days as 7 Grand Dad, but this Taito platformer sits about on par with Capcom's Disney games. It's really that well made.
Yeah
100% agree. The graphics and the detail put in this game were superb. Even the tune of the last stage is the one from the Jetsons!
NintendoComplete Konami's Tiny Toon games were also perfect imo
Yes!😃😁😊
@@j.r.3664 NANI?!
This is a pretty good bootleg of 7 grand dad.
Lol
LMAO
@@AnimationMaster 😐
The real bootleg are the friends we made along the way
Yes
Damn. Someone kidnaps 2 animals. Fred's reaction to that. The genocide of every animal and person in his way
that was my reaction too XD
John Wick for real
Poor Grand Dad
I mean, he is a caveman.
"YEEEEEAH BARN! NOTHING LIKE COMMITTING GENOCIDE AGAINST HUMANITY!"
"I don't know Fred... Ooup."
I got this game 30 years ago when I was a kid. The night before I drew a picture of Fred and wrote something like ”Good morning, let’s go get the game”. I put it next to my bed so I could see it in the morning when I woke up. Getting games back then was so exiting. I can’t believe I still remember all this. It was my favourite nes game. Oh the memories…
So essentially, this game is a Flintstones/Jetsons crossover.
That made game enjoyable more.
George stating that he's busy with trouble at the company to Fred implies that this takes place at the same time as Cogswells Caper, the Jetsons nes game.
When I was *7* my *GRAND DAD* gave me this. It truly is a *GRAND* game.
It was a *High Quality* Title. *RIP* your grandpa.
Grand Dad..?
GRAND DAD?!?
FLEENTSTONES?!?
That music when Dino n hoppy get kidnapped gave me nightmares
Same here!
I found this game to be incredibly scary as a kid, but couldn't stop playing it. Some of the music can be extremely haunting. Still get major chills and goosebumps to this day when I listen to it.
Because you saw the future as a child
Of GRAND DAD
I’ll see myself out now
Hmmm, Mario 7? Never played this before! G R A N D D A D.
So true the music is scary as fuck
YES. I had nightmares about this game. I'm glad I'm not the only one
Damn... So I wasn't the only one. This game was weirdly creepy but I couldn't figure out why as a kid. Still liked it though.
Was never able to pass this game as a kid. So glad I finally got to see the ending! THANK YOU! :)
My *grand dad* helped me play it
One of my favorite NES games! Rented it all the time back in the day.
Rented this one as a kid and yes, it's solid.
The little-known sequel is one of the rarest games on the system, and having played a repro, I can say that it's definitely not worth the asking price!
what if it had grandad
Does it mean the game it's good or not
Isnt the game that 7 Grand Dad is a bootleg of common knowledge by now? Thats why I feel good again seeing youtube videos of this game.
Yep!😊😉😆
Grand dad!
My Eyes: Flintstones Game
My Brain: 7 Grand Dad
One of my favorites games in NES!!
Mine too so many memories
Thank you for going back to your older videos when you can and updating them in HD and 60 FPS.
Np! I hate it that I still have more to weed out, but 60 fps is just too important to ignore with these old flickery games :) And thanks, it's nice that you noticed the effort.

I had this game as a kid. Everything was so hard as a kid, now? Many of these NES and SNES games are easy yet fun to play.
Thanks for uploading a full playthrough of this gem.
Got this game from my mom when I was in elementary school. Loved it so much ❤️
I remember playing this with my grand dad when I was 7
Thank u for uploading this game brings back so many childhood memories
Thank you for posting this. It was a great trip to watch the full playthrough.
All tired memes aside, this is the only game that has the "Fred Flintstone Day" theme from the specials in late 70s.
What theme is that?
@@TurretBot It was in one of the later Flintstones shows during the 70s after the show ended. The song was (Tomorrow's gonna be) Fred Flintstone Day. The bonus stage is that piece.
If the comments was not all grand dad it would be very grand.
The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy!
Fleentstones!?
I remember getting this for Christmas 91 along with Little Nemo, Super Castlevania and Actraiser for the Super NES. Fun times!
Yup
Super Castlevania? It was a great Christmas indeed then!
I love how George Jetson acknowledges the events of The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones when you talk to him.
Wow!, nice graphics for the NES
I used to play this 30 years ago when I was a kid in 1992, during sundays afternoon. Nice days.
Such a great game! A lot of fond memories!👍
That intro story gave me nightmares as a kid :
My grandad gave me this game for my birthday when i was 7.
I see what you did there
the details of this game is very insane
No kidding guys this 7 Grand Dad bootleg looks epic
Grand Dad is the bootleg. The Flintstone is the original.

So evil they can’t do this to my grand dad…..
This was a fun little game! I remember being pretty excited that you got to visit the Jetsons future in the final level! And the obligatory 'giant mech boss battle' that was fairly common in a lot of video games, haha.
Damn, Fred really came for that dude's ankles.
I played this game around 7 years old. 1997. I think I stopped playing around 1999 when I got my Playstation. I was good at video games and this brings back memories being one of my first but I never could get past the more advanced stuff like that boat ride from hell. I could only pass like 3 stages of the board on my own....I enjoyed the basketball mini game in this. I think I remember scorring 22 pts like you before it ended.
Long live the Flintstones, definetly
Grand dad enters the chat
So if there is a copyright of the Jetsons in the title screen, does that mean they actually appear in this game at some point?
Videos like this are GREAT!
But.. they lack the fun of discovery. When you play a game like this for the first time you're learning what is possible.
These are great time capsules... but they miss the sense of adventure in playing for the first time.
Well it’s a longplay so the vibe of someone who’s never played it before just doesn’t apply here.
especially without granddad
This is the first game I could remember that had the ability to hang on a ledge and pull yourself up. Blew me away at the time because every game I'd ever played till then had it where if you missed landing feet square on a platform, it was over.
Honestly, I thought this game was some kind of weird dream my brain made up as a kid, but I'm happy to learn it wasn't! I never made it past the first level because of how difficult this game was, so it's nice getting to finally see the rest of the game!
Getting Dr. Wily flashbacks from this final boss
SUCH A GOAT GAME
One of the best nes games! Love it
I really love the crossover between them and the Jetsons.
I rented this game from Blockbuster back in the day lot of fun.
This is literally just 7 Grand Dad but with Fred Flintstone's face over Grand dad's
Тая игра няма да я забравя още като дете я цъках адски много дори и сега я имам на лаптопа си❗️❗️❗️❤❤❤ обичам Флинстон 😊😊❤️❤️❤️
I used to have this cartridge back in the 90's, but I still can't find it. I will find it one day.
The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy is based on the animated cartoon TV series The Flintstones. Taito would later release another Flintstones game for the NES titled The Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak 3 years later, in 1994.
Haven’t seen this game in 30+ yrs! I beat it twice as a kid, and lemme tell you, this game was very difficult. One of the hardest platforming games out there . Don’t really know how I was able to clear this twice.
12:00 now you are just toying with it!
That's just Fred being Bo Jackson.
This game is very good for a NES game.
The sprite work is good, the music is nice. And gameplay is decent
Being able to hang on edges was such an advanced thing back then. Not even Super Metroid had that. We only saw that in Metroid Fusion. Then came Prince of Persia and Blackthorne.
Prince of Persia was first released in 1989.
Awesomeness please do more thanks
Uno de mis videojuegos favoritos de la Nes👍👌
My sister and I played the Dino poop outta this!! Plus that intro music when they swooped on them always kinda of freaked me out in a good way! Lol
This is the nostalgic..... grand dad! 😎👊
FLEETSTONES??? AUGHH
I never finished this game in my childhood
I've rented this game at the video store so many times as a kid.
This is pretty neat
Finally my search is finished. My 2 decade ago fav game
The Flintstones game is amazing.
😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
my grandfather loves this game!
Why is 7 Grand Dad better known than this game, the original one? I mean if you open 7 Grand Dad, it's easy to see that it' a hack of a Flintstones game
Because Vinesauce/Joel, he made this game very known as a meme (and maybe because many people used to buy bootlegs without knowing they are bootlegs)
@@lunethtemmie866 I guess I also forgot that tie in games are often forgotten about
12:40 I love how the music fits to the fail😅
Favorite game from childhood♥
A friend of mine has this and it looks even better than I recalled.
I love this music i playd this game very day after school
One of the best games ever.
Hell yeah Grand Dad is the shit.
I used to have this game and one of the best!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Memories are coming
I love the music more than the game it self.
I didn't all that what can Gizmo do! I believe I finished the game without them and the egg bomb thingy. Nice to see a childhood game again :)
I'm 17 years right now and i've been ignoring this game during my whole life, but now that i found about "7 Grand Dad", i think it's i'll consider giving it a real try
My favourite game as a kid❤
I love the outro music!!!!!!!!!!
This Flintstones NES game, The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy is based on the animated TV series The Flintstones, off of syndication and on TBS in the early 90's.
braincell 1: it's just a game about the flintstones.
braincell 2: GRAND DAD?
Nice video

Ty! :) Totally appreciated!
GRAND DAD
After 31 years not only did the flinstones did recieve it’s own video game and not only did that game follow some of the episodes from the cartoon series BUT it also contains many inspired elements from the supermariobros games and you even could ride a dinosour,so while those supermario cartoon series may did took some inspirations from the flinstones, but it’s video game definitely took inspirations from those supermario games and so here we are in full circle🙏🙏🙏👍😁
I never saw the ice level because this game was hard af when I was a kid.
Who knew Fred was so swift at Basketball?
I rented this game when I was a child. It was annoying to say the least lol.
I remember renting it when it was brand new. We were just about to go on Christmas break, and I was so excited that somehow there was still a copy of it left, since it was a new release and a Friday. Anyways, random memory aside, I remember really enjoying it. I beat it a few times before it had to go back on Sunday afternoon.
@@NintendoComplete the basketball mini game is some of my fondest childhood memory's I rented it a couple times just to play basketball lol
Good game, very enjoyable and not too hard for the most part. I had the most trouble with the autoscrolling parts usually, but even those aren't that bad overall. Some of Taito's Japanese exclusives are pretty good as well - Minelvaton Saga or Don Doko Don 1 & 2 come to mind. Guess they didn't publish or develop that many NES games, but their area of expertise are arcades anyway.
I personally hated the castle section with lava the most.
@@Jeansowaty Yeah, that one's probably the most difficult individual section. Funny how the future world is much easier, especially with all the transformations.
Back when we first had this we would have to leave the system on when we weren’t playing to save the progress.
GRAND DAD?!
FLEENSTONES?!
my childhood game
I periodically come back to this game due to the extremely dramatic take on Flintstones.
Juegazo, es te juego me lo presto un. Amigo que ya falleció y le tengo un gran cariño por eso ya que me recuerda a el.
7:50 Sometimes, you need a leap of faith.
11:40 I thought running around might be the way to win. 😂
12:41 Ice levels, man. The physics are brutal. 🕳️
Well played!
I'm probably the only one here who doesn't know what these Grand Dad jokes are all about.
Nope. I have no idea, lol
Explanation:
1992-This game was hacked by bootleggers to pass off as a Mario game under the name "7 Grand Dad". It replaced Fred's head with Mario's and changed the title screen.
2014-Joel, a member of Vinesauce was streaming NES bootlegs, and one of them was this.
2016-GiIvaSunner/SiIvaGunner was born via a Pokemon bait-and-switch video that used the Flintstones theme.
