Finishing the First Cabin Dormer! / Ep70 / Outsider Log Cabin
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 июл 2020
- We're finishing the first dormer, no matter what! What's more, we're building it with lumber that we've produced from the portable sawmill. After custom fitting the ridge piece and header, we ran out of wood. This meant that I had to hop onto the tractor and retrieve an old spruce log, which is when the trouble began. Somehow, I managed to jam the cable deep within the pulley housing, and I had to improvise to get it unstuck.

Oh, joy! I am so pleased this episode is over 37 minutes long. Please, Mr. Outsider, don’t edit too much content; every frame is precious, I want to see more footage please.
Who was like me, waiting for the tub of screws to get knocked off the window ledge. lol. The angle view of the camera seemed it was something that was going to happen. lol.
Great video yet again. Ther Dorma looks great. A good addition to the upstairs.
Yep, i thought the elbow was gonna evoke Murphy's law once again. lol.
As a matter of fact, that tub of screws did eventually get knocked to the ground below. 😅 So we took a break to climb down and pick screws from the dirt. What fun. 😅👎
@@TheOutsiderCabin haha, nail bags for early Christmas 🎄!
@@TheOutsiderCabin I was waiting to see it. lol. My tub of screws and tub of nuts and bolts are always fallijng of fthe shelves in my shed. I leave them until I can be bothered to pick them up. lol.
@@TheOutsiderCabin The truth will set You free. God Bless
its so refreshing to see someone working and not talking and talking and talking telling stories that have nothing to do with the information im trying to find. thank you.
There is only one thing that I love more than watching it now two fellows working hand-in-hand building things the right way. Not taking shortcuts is the best way that I know and as I said there's only one other thing that I love more than watching this and that is my Lord. Guys please stay safe and stay well and as always God bless
I can’t even imagine what it must be like to run out of lumber.......then just go make your own. What a total feeling of accomplishment AND satisfaction.!
Not to forget FREEDOM.....
I'm about to get an Alaskan chainsaw mill to use with my Stihl MS461. The lumber at the big box stores is way overpriced and basically a bunch of twisted wavey junk.
It takes extra work, but it certainly does feel good, being able to produce most of my own materials. Plus the sawmill gives me the ability the do custom pieces (like a 7" thick cedar header with 3" wings), which I'd never be able to find at a lumber yard. 🙂👍I wouldn't have been able to build the cabin I envisioned without it.
very funny lol lol lol lol
@@TheOutsiderCabin Did you use the lumber you milled in this video in the dormer project? I'm confused as to whether green wood can be used immediately like that, doesn't it need to dry?
THE STRENGTH AND BUILD QUALITY IN THIS BUILD IS AMAZING. UK

My goodness those battery powered tools are a real game changer. So are the screws your using. They are so much better than the common nails. As always, love the craftsmanship your doing on your cabin.
Terrific job on building the dormer. I find it so satisfying to see well cut pieces wood fit together to form a sturdy cabin.
This is why I love my Saturday mornings. Good coffee, open windows and a sweet video from The Outsider.
Love that Jackery solar set up.
I’ve been watching many cabin builds on RUclips and I must say that yours is one of the coolest ones out there. I love that you and your Dad work together. I’m sure he’s very proud of you! May God bless you both and protect you while you work on this wonderful cabin.
Love your work. Praise Adonai for guiding you and keeping you and your family along the way.
Whewww... those battery operated drills and screw driver attachments have revolutionize building!
Amazing passion for craftsmanship. Love the dedication in everything you do. God bless you and your family, always praying for you all.
Thank you! God bless. 🙂🙏
I love every episode of this series and I'm torn because I'd love to see the final cabin finished but I never want the series to end.
Glad to hear it 🙂, but no need to worry. Even once the cabin is "finished" there's still plenty I want to do to improve it. And those are just my plans for the cabin. I reckon I still have decades of content left in me. 😄👍 So I'm good to go for a while.
Just look at the fellow up in Canada, My Self Reliance, that built a cabin... He finished it a few years ago, and has busier than ever with a screened room, a large lodge for guests, an outdoor covered kitchen, an adobe oven, a pond, a root cellar, a garden area with natural soil amendment.. There is SO much to come after a basic living space is finished.
Thank you so much for sharing l always look forward to your videos, nice to see father and son working together. God Bless and stay safe.
Drinking my coffee .Thinking Wish I had those skills and agility. . You are making the world proud. Lad. Construction not violence. Building not tearing down. Peace and respect ,not abuse. Big hello to your wife and your dad. Your favourite Calgary fan ..John
Will watch this later since I am busy at the moment, but just wanted to say it makes me happy to see the video is 37 minutes and 9 seconds long. 😀 Love the longer videos.
Absolutely...YES, YES, YES... It still goes by too quickly.
Glad to hear that you appreciate the longer episode! 🙂👍
@@TheOutsiderCabin It was a great episode. Thanks for all that you do to bring these episodes to us.
I love the longer ones! They are so much more fun to just soak up.
The talent this guy has. I am blown away by his work.
How in the world did you learn how to be such master craftsman at such a young age? I am amazed at your knowledge of the trade! Blessings to you and all your loved ones!
I love your videos. You and your dad have incredible skills. God bless you and keep you both safe.
Seeing all those boards fit perfectly does my heart good in these tumultuous times! Thank you!
thank you mr. outsider this is what i needed to start my day . good to see you and your dad are well be safe and cant wait for the next one
Looks great. Love that you quote Red Green. Hope the Missus is doing well. Blessed be.
Love watching you build. You make me nervous sometimes lol ! The love of God is one of my favorite hymns. Such beautiful words. God bless!

I didnt realize how invested i was in this build until i searched for his page last week and checked my notification preferences. I thought I had missed this episode. Thanks for starting my Saturday morning off right!
First off I would like to ask, how is your wife’s health doing. My continuous prayers to her to get through each day with better health.
Then it was so good to see a video from you for a change, I’m glad to see your father was out lending you a hand in the cabin construction.
I look forward to the next video and the second dormer construction and it should go faster and easier for you since you’ve already done one.
As always God Bless and good health to your family.
🙏🙂 Thanks for asking! My wife has been doing a little better lately, which is good. Baby steps, but progress nonetheless. Some days I stay home to let her rest, and the other days I work on the cabin. She's a trooper, that's for sure.
As for my dad, he is always an invaluable help on the cabin. So glad I can share this journey with him.
Thank you for this reply. She is always in my thoughts. I know you give us updates from time to time, and I just wait. I figure no news is good news, and if she has a better day, you are building. Best to you both.
Yes two dormers in the loft is a great idea. thankyou for showing your build cant wait for the next video.
Your Dad and yourself seem to make a great team. Count this blessing, its one I wish I had.
Well done! Nuff said! You n your Dad got this down to a science!
Thanks for sharing!
GWW... Ooouuuttt!
The dormers will add just a bit of Class to the build, well done, I found the video to be informative and quite interesting Thanks , take care these days stay safe.
I’m glad u went with the viewer’s advice and put the dormers in now! Additions like this will make your cabin all that u want it to be! Beautiful!
Great job Outsider, house is looking awesome !!!!! Tell Senior I said Hello and I’m Praying 🙏 for you guys and your family.
CC Rider. 👍😁👍❤️✝️
So wonderful to watch. Thank you guys, looking forward to the next one! Have a great day!
You are two artists creating a masterpiece 👍🇫🇷
I'm glad you decided to remove the purlin section. Removing it will open up that dormer so much.
That viewer you referred to had wise advice. I am glad you listened.
The effort in your videos reflects your passion , Brilliant work once again !
Awesome
@Opus 1 I l1
Really cool dormer. Looking at the loft, just think how cool it would be to put glass in the eaves. What a dream wall or window for whoever would sleep there. Light bonanza and sleeping in and living in the treetops.
That would look incredible! Once I can afford it, I'd love to do that. For now though, I think I'll clad between the gable bracing, so that they remain exposed. They just look too nice to clad completely over.
The Outsider yes. 👍
Great job! Praying for your wife’s full recovery each night and morning. May Wakantanka Bless you! 🐻
Actual 2 X 4 dimensions. Nice! Milling it yourself! Priceless!!!
When Senior Outsider was sitting on the dormer using the circular saw all I could think of was Wile E Coyote sawing on the wrong end.
It's okay, he won't fall as long as he doesn't look down.
😄 I actually had the same thought when I was watching him do that. Then I asked him to get down from there and let me handle the ridge. 😄
I'd hold off cutting those purlins until after it all comes together and you've had time to think about it. Great video.
You’re absolutely correct about waiting to cut.
Looking GREAT and yes that dormer makes all the difference. Idea of closet in corner is good and if you need to you can always add a support on both sides. Didnt look that big when you first started but after seeing you and your dad walking into that window area it is huge, makes a world of difference.
Thanks for sharing your video. I have tremendous admiration for the effort, skill, tenacity and engineering that went into building your house. I know the personal satisfaction upon completion of the project will be immense. Cheers
When this video popped up in my subscriptions I immediately stoked the fire, put on a cup of tea and enjoyed ever minute of it. Keep up the great work and God bless from Australia 😁
When I read that you stoked the fire my first thought was to wonder where you are and then I read your last line. 🤪
Of course you have to be in the Southern Hemisphere.
So very Cool My Friend !! So nice to see you and your Dad Together doing Something that you Both Like Doing .. Don't See To Much of that these days .. Wish there was More of that.. Doesn't take a lot to be a man but it takes a a lot to be a Father !! Wish I had 1... So Glad to Say that I am 1 !! Thank You so much for letting Me be a Subscriber to watch you and your Father on this Build..
The proportions of your dormer is perfect. Very pleasing to the eye, as well as being functional.
Thank you! I couldn't be more happy with how it turned out.
i have been enjoying this whole series since the beginning like yourself i have built a cedar log cabin and i am also a retiree contractor and now a full time Pastor... you and your dad have been a real blessing to me … i look forward to the day to see you complete and enjoy the work of your hands ...God bless Pastor Bill
Ha, yes, the great philosopher Red Green. Another, and perhaps his most famous saying: If the women don't find you handsome, they should atleast find you handy!
Handy is beautiful handsome is useless
Ah yes. 😄 Classic wisdom. My favorite is the man's prayer.
@@TheOutsiderCabin . . . I guess . . .
This cabin build needs more duct tape.

Absolutely enjoy this channel. Is that your Dad? Doesn't look like the same guy. But only recall seeing him in passing during the winter shots. Keep it rolling, this is absolutely amazing. I hope your wife is doing well.
Great to hear! ...yup that's my pops. He shed his winter beard in the spring, like all northern men do. 😄
Congratulations on your beautiful work. I really appreciate your way of approaching problems and your ability to solve them. Excellent way to manage security. I recommend "safety first". Thanks for your videos! Nando from Italy
Construire sa maison dans cette belle nature est un challenge incroyable. Vous avez la chance de vivre loin de ce monde dit civilisé. En Europe on ne peut rien faire sans autorisation de l’urbanisme et sans l’accord des territoires. Félicitations.

What are the name of the boots you’re wearing?
BTW you make all the tools look easy up on that roof! Especially the skill saw. Take care and God Bless 🙏
Thank you my friend! ...The boots are made by Kodiak, a Canadian company. They are awesome work boots.
@@TheOutsiderCabin Awesome enough that they were the required footwear when I worked on a warehouse expansion project ~15 years ago... The company reimbursed us for boots, but only if they were a particular pair from Kodiak.
I loved this video it was awesome. I felt like I was you doing the work because the videoing was fantastic. I know it must take allot of you extra time up in making the videos but it was so good. well done one that! I love love love the Dorma window its strong and looks beautiful. Your Dad and you are very clever builders. I love that your dad comes out there and helps you. I still think of your wife and pray she is doing very well. May Jesus bless you all and you little girl.
Watching this build is such a joy. You are a remarkable craftsman with both wood and videography. A true artisan. I pray you are all doing
well. Senior outsider is always an added bonus to these vids. I loved the way he was rockin' his backwards dewalt cap :) :) Thank you for the
safety measures you take when working. I know they can be cumbersome but we all thank you! God bless you my friend.

Your handsome. Very ✝️
12:29 How the hell did you get that shot?!
That did look cool!
@GXF Andre guessing the camera was on a tree limb or stick.
I was just holding the camera and guiding it between the branches as I went. I know, pretty hi-tech. 😄
I’ve been watching these videos for awhile now. I appreciate the amount of effort this one took with respect to pure effort and time. The amount of editing and back-breaking labor put in. RUclips might be all about views/watch time...but this video is just pure perseverance. Really liked it. Seeing your Dad also always brings a smile given what the family has suffered. Best to you both.
Ha! Love the Red Green quote. Great videos. Keeping me entertained during an awful cold. ❤
Now, please bow your heads for the "man's prayer"..."I'm a man, I can change, if I have to, I guess"...;)
😆😆😆 "Quando omni flunkus moritati...sit down."
@@TheOutsiderCabin Please tell me you stood and did the movements too...LOL! Love RedGreen...classic!
That dormer takes alot of time, but it looks nice. I can see your very handy with tools,. That was a big log you pulled out it made alot of lumber with your mill. I see your Dad is still helping that's good. Keep up the good work, God bless you and your family and I hope your wife is doing well. 👌😀💖
Excellent craftsmanship, and videography.
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Says it all....( very clever work on the cable )
Workmanship is amazing. Enjoy the videos.
Really great work. What a great experience to share with your dad.
Puts a smile on my face when I see you posted an update. Love you channel. May God continue to bless you and all you that you do. Thanks for sharing.
So yeah... I may need to get out more... but I have cheered and clapped n oooohed n Ahhhhed and praised your Dad and prayed for your safety and giggled at how fabulous this accompaniment is. Thank you for sharing. Hope your wife is doing grand too. Much love to you all. xxx
Just looking beautiful more and more with each video
I dont know what it is, but I get an extreme sense of satisfaction when I see a father and son working together as a team. Please dont ever stop doing what youre doing.
What a tremendous blessing to be able to work with your dad. My dad is 87 and I can not keep up with him. I bring him logs and he will run the mill all day long. He still can do it all
But I won't let him get on a ladder any higher than 6 feet. What a joy to have such a rich heritage of love and faith in God. You are a blessed man. May the Lord grant complete healing for your lovely wife in Jesus name.
Your work ethic and skills are certainly to be admired. What is very special is to be able to work with your dad in the creation of the cabin and to top it off on your grandfather land. Three generations very special. It would be so wonderful to see a picture of the three of you in front of the cabin.
Stay safe and thanks so much for the opportunity to follow you and your family.
Great work as always. Yes the dormer made a 100% difference in the look of the cabin. I agree the light will be great as well. I was setting here thinking what people many years after we are gone what they will think of this cabin. It will no doubt be standing for a long time. The old building ways with added new updated ways will help to keep your great work standing for many to enjoy. Be safe buddy. Will be looking forward to your next video.
Well done! I like the closet idea. Vertical supports will save countless headaches.
This project is so amazing. In 1982 my Dad designed a clubhouse that everyone in the neighborhood helped build in our backyard including my four older brothers and sisters. It remains one of my fondest memories of my dad who passed away a bit young in ‘96. Very inspiring story of the journey and your hardships along the way, take care and take it one day at a time.
Молодец!!! Классно вышло. Чёткая подгонка, мне тоже так в доме захотелось, хоть разбирай - уже покрыл металочерепицей. Привет с Урала.
Its always feels good to get things done. Great job.
That looks awesome !!! And I agree.... might as well do it now before you roof it ! Really adds to the already beautiful cabin. !! Stay safe
It looks very good. Glad you went ahead and added the dormer
Very impressive dormer carpentry and design. Should survive a hurricane. 👍🏻
Two by fours that are actually TWO by FOUR!!! Amazing!!!! :)
This is so relaxing to watch. From the way you manoeuvred the log between the saplings, the milling of the timber to the clunk as the pieces of timber are dropped into place. Because of your measured and methodical methods I know that cabin is going to eventually become a family treasure for generations to come.
You and you father do beautiful work I'm a retired builder of 33 years and built 1 log home f or a friend so I appreciate the extra effort you and your father are doing on the Log home! Great memories for you later on in life. Keep up the beautiful Job yous are doing...
With your slope on that roof you are easily safe with that section. No snow load will bend those logs. Your added safety was just more room to fill in with insulation. Depending on your floor you could add knee walls for support if your worried.
Good vibes and thoughts to you and your wife as well your family.
That is a work of art. . . A beautiful job done there!!!
Your windows is nicely done….and solid
A thing of beauty built to last...Amazing!
You are doing an Incredible job on your cabin and the dormers are going to bring much needed light. So very proud of You and your Dad!!!
My husband and I have been watching your videos for a very long time and have enjoyed them immensely....
I want you to know that You and Your Family are in our Prayers and an extra special one for your lovely wife....
You all take care now and stay safe.

I ordered that coffee and used your code. I hope that little bit helps. You take care and keep up the good work and I Pray God's Blessings upon you and yours good sir.
I am always amazed how a dormer or two make a proper roof and loft.
Your cabin is going to be a great home ❤
Nice build. And not only voice over. But life reports down the line. Keep going!

What a blessing to hear you quote the scriptures from time to time. Good job, well done. God bless your work.
That's looking good Mr. Outsider !
Well I am enjoying these videos even more now that we are spending the summer in a small old log cabin on my daughter's property in northern Wisconsin.
Really enjoyed the Red Green reference. Philosopher indeed.
All I can say is ,YOU,
