Denzel Washington had one of the best performances in this movie. Going from good cop in control to man on the run and slowly becoming paranoid and unhinged was awesome. It didn’t rely on jump scares and loud noises but the eerie feeling of being watched constantly while your world crumbles. I miss movies like this.

I love that the first half is a strict, believable police procedural that severely limits the supernatural underpinnings while still having enough of them there that the story's logic by the end is flawless. Wow, I've actually seen this movie before you talked about it. I do feel this is an underappreciated film and I actually like the fact that it's not glammed up like other possession movies. It kind of gets into your head and makes you feel like this could actually happen. Also, ever since I've seen that movie, I can't "Time on my Side" without getting a slight feeling of discomfort.

I remember when I watched this movie with my mom for the first time how angry she was at the ending. I can never hear Sympathy for the Devil without thinking of this movie. Underrated gem.
The fact that I still have the refrain 'time is on my side' kick into gear the moment I saw the title says something about how much of an impact it had.
I love when you take films that aren’t typically labeled as horror but have enough horrific moments to qualify a whole video essay about it. Like your take on watership down, or Coraline. Would love your thoughts on the Black Cauldron.
I’m surprised you haven’t done a David Lynch essay yet. Maybe an Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive video for the future? Would love to see how you interpret his movies!
@@RyanHollinger Oh you definitely should. His movies are very convoluted and dream-like. They can be very unsettling to watch due to the way he can translate literal nightmares into film haha. I’d recommend you check out Mulholland Drive as a starter!
Mommy was VERY into these kinds of spooky films during the late '90s & 2000's. I remember the scene in which the demon jumps bodies by rapidly touching people's shoulders in a crowd. Seeing that visual shook up more memories of this from my brain. Denzel Washington is a REAL good actor. So amazing that he intimidates me.
As much as I love hearing Ryan's thoughts on movies I've seen, I get all sorts of giddy when he covers something I haven't seen before. This looks like another movie I'll happily check out because of his video.
Also, RE: the demon zeitgeist in horror, there was also a huge angel motif in romantic/upbeat movies alongside it. Everything from “Angels in the Outfield” to “City of Angels” that came out the same year as this. Huh.
When this movie came out there was a soap opera that I watched called "Sunset Beach". I remember recognizing one of the people Azazel touches as an actor from that show.
It's hard to believe this was one of those "forgotten" films. What a great cast, with Washington, Goodman, Sutherland! They really made what could have been a silly TV movie into something special. I think Goodman's turn at being possessed at the end was magical--he seems perfect for it. You're right, it really is fairly unique among possession movies, especially the way it crossed over with Noir--but it seems to work. It's almost like a supernatural version of Se7en.
Thank you so much for covering this. As a young teenager I was obsessed with this sub-genre/mood of movies. I rented this on video after it came out and loved it. And I've never met anyone else who saw it. Loved the ending, and yeah, "Time is on my sIde" now forever reminds me of this movie. So underrated. I bought the DVD when it came out and listened to the commentary track. I almost felt disappointed because the original script they discuss and the studio mandated changes made it seem like there was an even greater and almost more subtle story they wanted to tell.
I was sick when I watched this and I thought it was a perfect sick day movie because if I thought at all about the plot, I would find it too silly to sit through. It’s weird how I could have even had that thought while watching.
This was my first supernatural thriller I got to watch at a young age (I was sheltered, lol) and it’s still one of my favorites. I’m so happy you covered it. It’s so underrated.
I only vaguely remember seeing this movie when I was very young with my parents. All I remembered from it was the eeriness of that Rolling Stones song and even that eventuality faded from my memory. That is, until I watched this video. Thank you for releasing that memory of childhood terror from the deepest depths of my mind.
The title of this video doesnt do this hidden gem any justice. This movie is easily in my top 10 all time favorites and, in my opinion, the best denzel Washington movies if not my favorite of his. I pop this movie all the time and it never gets old. You must see this movie if you haven't yet. Please. And thank you for covering it, Ryan.
Hey Ryan, ever think about covering hellraiser or some of the other clive barker adaptations? Hellraiser 1 would be up your alley, the rest I don't know much about since many of them aren't talked that well about compared to the first.
I haven't thought of this movie in decades. The first few min of the video stirred some foggy memories, then Time is On My Side was mentioned and the whole rest of the movie just clicked into place in my head. This really was a great movie. Solid story that has a drastic but well executed side-step into a different and wider narrative. Great performances. Denzil Washington at his height In the previous 6 years he had been in Malcom X, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, Virtuosity (with a delightfully chaotic and young Russel Crowe), Courage Under FIre & The Pelican Brief..... one hell of a CV in those movies there. And an ending that goes for a last blow like Se7en did, but instead of cutting your balls off and delivering them to you in the middle of a desert, it just kicks you in the shin, gives you a jab in the face, then laughs at you as it wanders off to mess with someone else. addendum: Isn't the darker turn of 90s movies basically just yet another example of the so-called 'every other decade' concept? Here it is a reprise of the 70s, which took over from the optimism of the 60s. With this new shift in the 90s coming from the giant big dumb action forget-your-brain-at-the-door funfests of the 80s.
One of my favourite movies of all time and easily one of the best uses of a Rolling Stones song that Hollywood has ever produced. So glad to see you cover this underrated gem of a film!
This! This was the movie! I remember a trailer were there was a guy singing “time is on my side”, touches a girl then she starts singing it. This damn thing has haunted my dreams for nearly 25 years
This was seen by me plenty. Came out when I was a HS Student. Watched it multiple times in the Movie Theatres and own it on DVD. All Star Cast (Denzel, Goodman, Sutherland, Gandolfini etc.) Very underrated movie
This movie has always been an important one to me. It was my first real experience with a plot twist I didn't want to accept, while also loving it completely. I also loved the long dialogue between professionals that had no idea what they were dealing with, and the slow realization that everything they knew to be true was inconsequential. I loved the mystery of it, and as a high school kid just waking up to the world of literature, I was hooked. And compared to the end of days demon stories of the era, this one felt truly haunting that was deeply understated, suggesting the end of it all was hiding in plain sight, playing with us and loving the ride. I still watch it regularly. Thank you for covering this film. One of my favourites.
This was the best kind of movie from the video rental era. A movie you rent for the cover and comes home to realize it was something completely different. Like Event Horizon.
Luv your Review Ryan. Azazel was The Same demon from Supernatural Aka The Yellow Eyed Demon. P.s That ending was Bad Ass I love How The Bad Guy Wins Makes It way Scarier Knowing evil is Out There. By the way Ending Song is Called ''Sympathy For The Devil''-By The Rolling Stones.
Fallen has one of my favorite depictions of demonic possession. Most possessed in cinema borrow heavily from Pazuzu in The Exorcist (and rightfully so, as the film is based on an allegedly true account). A floating, contorting, barfing, blaspheming, telekinetic, obviously supernaturally afflicted person (made worse as the victim is an angelic looking child). Hoyver, demons of this type bug me. They're so stupid. At best they destroy one person and their family, but seem content to make their host act like a lunatic and cause scary, but harmless haunting type phenomena. They're not very cunning, so obviously evil that most characters run to the last church they attended. In a way, they send their victims into the arms of the enemy, God and his Earthly servants, exorcists. Azazel is horrifying because it rapidly changes hosts and has a subtle, deceptive, cruel, capricious and murderous mind. Unlike Pazuzu, Azazel has more on his agenda than flop around and shout obscenities, murder.
We loved this movie growing up. As soon as I saw your thumbnail that song instantly got stuck in my head. I loved how Azazel had certain characteristics like being left-handed that ratted him out. What a blast from the past! ❤️
Why not type Of a prestigious quality. Chef kiss really should be left to food. Hope that fad dies out quickly. In the industry its used more as a snark. Al bacio .... now that's a different kettle of fish. Definitely not from money are you?

This is one of my friend's favorite movies and our big friend group sat down and watched it one night. At the end, we all yelled at them, we were so furious at the ending.
this reminds me of the show “the outcast”. it’s an underrated horror GEM that was cancelled after 2 seasons. you should do a video on it if you haven’t bc it’s sO good
@@commandercat10 it’s a show based off comics written by robert kirkman. the main character kyle dealt with possession as a kid. people in his town don’t like him bc he “allegedly” physically assaulted his wife and daughter. he befriends a priest to try to find answers bc throughout the seasons, the whole town becomes possessed. it only had 2 seasons
Intruders is another gem. It features a "possessed" Millie Bobby Brown in her, starring, screen debut. She kills it. ..literally. Really liked S1 of The Outcast but couldn't get into S2.
Thanks for covering this underrated film. Since I've seen it years ago I never forgot " time is on my side, yes it is" the hopelessness that builds throughout as well as the twisted finale alone makes this a great thriller.
Saw it "cold" the first time- I had no idea what the movie was about, but Denzel, Goodman and Donald Sutherland? Worth a shot. And what a shot! F-ing cats.
I bought this movie blind on VHS back in the day and absolutely loved it. I still sing the song because of it at certain times... Every actor in it brought their A-game and it made me appreciate John Goodman and Elias Koteas as very underrated actors.
"I need to be plugged into something to drown out the deafening screams of silence" This is a grade-A, pure, refined, gold-plated *mood.* As one who suffers from anxiety, I wholeheartedly empathize.
One of the best endings to a movie I'd ever seen. The cat strutting through the snow and the music accompanying that strut was awesome! Great movie overall!
This movie was, probably, my favorite movie rental in the Autumn of '98. I was impressed enough to rerent it, so I could show it to other's. I've long thought it to be an underappreciated, solid flick. Happy to see it get some love, and REALLY happy that it's Ryan doing it. One thing I've alway's thought about this film: it under-develops the stressful, everyday life of John's existence: being a single father and caretaker of a handicapped sibling, while having a dangerous job, just to put food on the table. When John's brother is possessed and killed, it is a horribly tragic event, that is somewhat lost in the frenetic 3rd act.
This is why i love this channel so much. It has introduced me to so many movies i didn't know were a thing. Grabbers and 8mm are some of my favourites that i have watched because of this channel.

Remember watching this when it came out, and have enjoyed rewatches every few years ever since. The twist didn't surprise me even on the first go-around, but even so, the slow burn really works for me.
I remember watching this when I was young, when this first came out. The ending scene with the cat walking down the sidewalk while that song played has always stuck with me.
Dude, Connor's theory is on point! I remember that time, we started to shift from disaster movies into more supernatural menaces and it was quite cazy. On one side, news broadcasts talking about Y2J, the possible colapse of society due to how reliant on computers every piece of social/infra structure was, doomsday cults talking about mass suicide and on the other side, Hollywood going bananas over demons, apocalipses and evil entities... The more i think about it, the more it all makes sense.
I'm so glad you covered this, I always feel like a crazy person when I talk about this movie. It's been one of my favorites since I saw it ages ago and it seems like I was the only person who had heard of it!
I love the feel of this film. Right out of the gate it has this harsh, oppressive tone of inevitability. And it never lets up untill the end credits start. Great video Ryan as per usual. Keep up the great work!👍
I'm not really moved when it comes to the possession movies we get in droves these days but man this one really scared me. Not cause of the imagery, but the concept, and the plot. Thanks for the rec
I remember seeing this as a kid on TV and immediately being hooked on the story and the characters involved. This really encapsulates Denzel Washington as an actor and it’s one of my favorite thrillers out there
reminds me of David Mitchell's character called The Mongolian. it's a consciousness that travels between different characters through touch, and MItchell includes the character in at least two of his novels. it's the kind of symbol and characteristic that I'm obsessed with, and it's a cool way to explore different characters and genres
The song is what always first comes to mind when Fallen is mentioned. I bloody love possession movies, and will jump at the chance to watch them even if they don't have good ratings / reviews .I got to see fallen in the cinema when It was released, and I remember the gasp of some of the other movie goers ( and a few chuckles )at the ending .
It has been three watches of your response now, 2 more than I gave the movie, and I have to say that I watch movies strictly for escapism but I never caught the true tragedy of this movie. Looking at face value for the first time, it is an artful apocalypse movie. But you give it so much meaning, you connect the dots that I checked out for! You make every movie you review so much more than I originally experienced, and that is what brings me back to your channel! 💜
Man, I saw this movie back when I was like 14 or 15 and it made a pretty big impression on me. I'm so glad to see anyone else remembering it since it seems largely forgotten.
I saw this movie with my sister not long after it came to Blockbuster (timestamp!) and we were so shaken by the ending! This was the movie that taught me the idea that a film doesn't have to have a happy ending to be a good movie, and I will always love it for that. I remember when I watched this movie with my mom for the first time how angry she was at the ending. I can never hear Sympathy for the Devil without thinking of this movie. Underrated gem.
I remember seeing this back during its home release and thinking "Damn, now THAT'S how you end a thriller!"
Great movie, sadly forgotten.
Same. Hope he reviews Black Cauldron.
Another great movie in a similar vibe/vein is “Frailty” but I think you’ve covered it.
You can listen to "Time is on my side" on Ray Cons. Though not as chilling as a "HOYEVER."
I’m surprised you haven’t done a David Lynch essay yet. Maybe an Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive video for the future? Would love to see how you interpret his movies!
So would I… I’ve never fully seen one.
@@RyanHollinger Oh you definitely should. His movies are very convoluted and dream-like. They can be very unsettling to watch due to the way he can translate literal nightmares into film haha. I’d recommend you check out Mulholland Drive as a starter!
It might be in bad form because David Lynch has an active RUclips channel he posts on every day.
@@julesking1303 tons of people give their opinions on lynchs works, I think it would be awesome
@@RyanHollinger for pure terror, I don’t think you can beat Fire Walk With Me. I suppose it has far more impact if you’ve seen Twin Peaks.
Made my husband watch this for Halloween this year.
This movie, Seven, and Frailty are my “trifecta” of horror movies.
Frailty is insanely under rated.
Ryan should definitely make a video on frailty, so much to discuss
Always to come back to a new vid with the iconic “Hoyever “
Thank you so much for covering this. As a young teenager I was obsessed with this sub-genre/mood of movies. I rented this on video after it came out and loved it. And I've never met anyone else who saw it. Loved the ending, and yeah, "Time is on my sIde" now forever reminds me of this movie. So underrated. I bought the DVD when it came out and listened to the commentary track. I almost felt disappointed because the original script they discuss and the studio mandated changes made it seem like there was an even greater and almost more subtle story they wanted to tell.
Underrated with a great opening, just not a fan of the ending. I would recommend First Power as well and if you want a fun version, Shocker.
Just when I thought this day was okay, Ryan posts a new video and makes it better.
It’s so underrated.
try Frailty.
Hellraiser 2 was actually good too
The first 2 were the only ones worth talking about. The others all sucked progressively more and more.
One of the most underappreciated thrillers in its own genre.
This damn thing has haunted my dreams for nearly 25 years
I have seen it. The scene where Azazel hops to people around the protagonist is top tier
This was seen by me plenty. Came out when I was a HS Student. Watched it multiple times in the Movie Theatres and own it on DVD. All Star Cast (Denzel, Goodman, Sutherland, Gandolfini etc.) Very underrated movie
Fallen is a long time favorite. So glad you covered it!
I love “Fallen.” It’s a top 10 horror movie for me, though there are probably 25 in my top 10.
This was a very good movie. This and Frailty, Frequency, and Stir of Echos were also good movies along the same vein
I remember renting this and Shocker from Blockbuster back in the day. I had "Time is on my Side" stuck in my head for weeks.
I've always looved this movie. All the actors are * chef's kiss *
Why not type Of a prestigious quality. Chef kiss really should be left to food. Hope that fad dies out quickly. In the industry its used more as a snark. Al bacio .... now that's a different kettle of fish.
Definitely not from money are you?
@@Theredladydribbles What the hell are you on about? Please stay in school and/or go talk to your own or someone's grandparents about manners. Yeesh.
I'd never seen drama on Ryan's page. Are you lost?
This is one of my friend's favorite movies and our big friend group sat down and watched it one night. At the end, we all yelled at them, we were so furious at the ending.
this reminds me of the show “the outcast”. it’s an underrated horror GEM that was cancelled after 2 seasons. you should do a video on it if you haven’t bc it’s sO good
What is it about I can’t find it when I look it up
Link?
"I need to be plugged into something to drown out the deafening screams of silence"
This is a grade-A, pure, refined, gold-plated *mood.* As one who suffers from anxiety, I wholeheartedly empathize.
One of the best endings to a movie I'd ever seen. The cat strutting through the snow and the music accompanying that strut was awesome! Great movie overall!
🎶Tiiiiiiiiime is on my side, yes it is! 🎶
When John's brother is possessed and killed, it is a horribly tragic event, that is somewhat lost in the frenetic 3rd act.
this movie has haunted me for such a long time. the villain singing 'time is on my side' as he transfers bodies is SO scary!
Fallen is fantastic and introduced me to the Rolling Stones. It was odd seeing an evil Casey Jones as a kid tho.
I miss this type of movies, as always excellent video
Hey algorithm gods, Ryan is an amazing channel, that is all!
This is why i love this channel so much. It has introduced me to so many movies i didn't know were a thing. Grabbers and 8mm are some of my favourites that i have watched because of this channel.
2:28 Ahem, as much as I enjoy John Goodman, there's only one actor I've seen called Our Lord & Savior that I believe in & that man is Tim Curry. ✨😉
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
Just wanted to say I love your content and I really hope you’re doing well! Always love finding new horror and look forward to new notifications from you to add to my library 😊
I adore this movie! So brilliant.
Remember watching this when it came out, and have enjoyed rewatches every few years ever since. The twist didn't surprise me even on the first go-around, but even so, the slow burn really works for me.
Starship Troopers!!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
I remember watching this when I was young, when this first came out. The ending scene with the cat walking down the sidewalk while that song played has always stuck with me.
Please do "Ravenous" next 🙏
I swore he already had, but apparently not, seconded, one of my favorite unknown horror films (along with Event Horizon and Lord of Illusions)
Oh, I've seen this movie. It was only once, but it's impossible to forget the ending!
I can remember when I first saw this movie that the next days I was constantly humming the melody of „Time is on my side“.
Really a great movie.
This is one of my favorite movies! It's sad that it doesn't get more recognition, so thank you for showing it some love!
I saw this movie with my sister not long after it came to Blockbuster (timestamp!) and we were so shaken by the ending! This was the movie that taught me the idea that a film doesn't have to have a happy ending to be a good movie, and I will always love it for that.
Thanks so much for putting this back on my radar to rewatch, Ryan!
